And the winner of the Top Twenty Invitational was announced! “Nathan” (GCh Flessner’s International S’cess MT), bred by Bryan & Chris Flessner, and Heather Helmer, owned by Shirley VanCamp and Heather Helmer. Congratulations! And on a light hearted note, Tracy had the opportunity to present Sherry Duling the inaugural “Abused Handler Award (AHA) Challenge Trophy”, (a bright orange crash helmet covered in glitter stars and jingle bells). Sherry won this trophy for her “agony of defeat” crash through the ring fencing on Wednesday. Fortunately, Sherry was not badly injured during her crash, but friends the next day provided caution cones and directional signs to make sure she didn’t repeat her fall! Sherry demonstrated her great sense of humor by embracing the AHA and signed the crash helmet, which will be passed down through the years. As with most challenge trophies, this one requires 3 wins by the exact same person in order to be retired. Let’s hope it takes awhile before that happens!
T
he Chuck-a-Duck folks were at it again, selling ducks and encouraging folks to participate. Prior to the start of the auction, the Chuck-a-Duck contest saw some heated competition, and we’re pleased to say we raised the highest amount for the week. All it takes is some trash talking to get the folks really revved up to see who can take home the prize money! The auction was a fast and furious affair, with Jim Adams and Sherry Duling presiding over the items and a professional auctioneer to keep the momentum
rolling. Longtime bloodhound breeder, Sue Rowe, bequeathed part of her incredible collection of bloodhound memorabilia to the South Central Bloodhound Club Rescue, an incredibly generous thing to do and that is deeply appreciated. Other fabulous items for auction included a custom made stained glass window featuring this year’s National Logo, custom metal work items. And lest we forget… the BIG TICKET item of the night, a custom made, 14k gold pendant featuring a bloodhound head fashioned after the ABC logo, and surrounded by 16 diamonds, with a bale crafted to resemble a dog collar studded with diamonds. Judy McDonald was the successful bidder, although Susan Hamil gave her a run for her money. Raffle items were also in high demand, including an amazing amount of
beautiful gift baskets donated by Barb Garlick (thanks, Barb!). The monster raffle prize was a “Going to the Dog Show” super prize, including dog crate, ringside chair, grooming supplies and everything anyone could possibly want for a dog show. A huge thank you to the Prairielands Bloodhound Club for donation of the Super Prize. Saturday was the South Central Bloodhound Club’s Independent Regional. We had an outstanding lineup for our Sweeps Judge, Jim Adams and our Breed Judge, Catherine Brey-Marler, to inspect. Jim Adams as a professional handler said in his bio that bloodhounds were always his favorite breed to show, and he demonstrated that by taking his time and really enjoying his judging assignment. I can’t speak for everyone, but having Cathy Brey-Marler, who literally wrote the book on bloodhounds, judge the breed competition was nerve wracking, to say the least! She was patient with the puppies, which did their best to live up to bloodhound puppies’ reputation. And when it came time to judge the specials, Mrs. Brey-Marler did a commanding job, putting all the specials through their paces before choosing her winners. (Please insert the winners list here!) After all the hard work and planning, it was bittersweet to reach the end of the week’s events. But I think it’s fair to say that folks had a great time, saw some beautiful dogs and once again were reminded that “There’s no place like the Bloodhound National”! Continued on page 127
