KNIGHT HONORED WITH 2019 RURAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT LEADERSHIP AWARD Joann Knight, Executive Director of Dodge City/Ford County Development Corporation in Dodge City, Kansas received the 2019 Rural Economic Development Leadership Award for outstanding leadership in the field of rural economic development.
Nominees consist of economic development professionals, rural electric cooperative/rural telephone staff or board members who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in an economic development project resulting in the improvement of the quality of life, creation of new jobs, and opportunity for growth and development in rural America. “Joann has set an example in her community for bringing people together who have differing ideas, always looking for a solution to meet community needs and understanding solutions needed to work for all residents.” Stated Dennis Mingyar, NREDA Awards Committee Chair. “Her success a testament to her reputation and the integrity she demonstrates in her profession.” Mingyar presented the award at the association’s 2019 NREDA Annual Conference with more than 150 members in attendance. Knight was chosen by a national selection committee representing electric and telephone cooperatives from across the nation. NREDA is a vital network of rural economic development professionals providing expertise and national leadership on rural issues. PELTON RECEIVES KANSAS TEACHER OF THE YEAR (KTOY) NOMINATION
Lisa Pelton was completely surprised by her family and colleagues when she learned of the nomination. Her family rushed to her side to celebrate.
Peers select nominees. According to Gilbert Still, Assistant Principal, “Lisa is strong on building relationships with students, parents, and colleagues. Her ability to be so effective in the classroom, her expectations, and support she gives to students is inspiring. Children need teachers that believe in them whole-heartedly, and Mrs. Pelton does! Mrs. Pelton is inventive, dedicated, and structured. The love she has and shows for each student is admirable. Lisa will do anything for each one of them.” Pelton teaches science at Dodge City Middle School. She will submit an application in April for state-level consideration for KTOY 2020.
BOOT HILL DISTILLERY ANNOUNCES TWO NEW FULLTIME EMPLOYEES
The Boot Hill Distillery family continues to grow with the exciting addition of a new assistant distiller and office administrator. BHD is proud to welcome Stephanie Nestor as our new AssistantDistiller. Stephanie comes to us from Columbus, Ohio where she hasust finished her degree in Food Science and Technology at The Ohio State University. Prior to returning to school, Stephanie was an officer in the United States Army in the Judge Advocate General’s Corp. While stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Stephanie fell in love with bourbon. It’s that love of bourbon that made her decide to leave the practice of law in order to make spirits. When she’s not at the distillery, Stephanie enjoys spending time with her two children and playing board games.
The distillery is equally excited to welcome Julie Werkowitch as Office Admin and Front of House staff. Julie graduated from Fort Hays State University with her degree in agricultural business, not knowing entirely what she wanted to do with her career. However, after bartending her way through college, Julie is excited to move forward from making and serving drinksto the business side of the spirits industry as the Distillery’s Office Administrator. She respects and admires the team at Boot Hill Distillery and their efforts to keep the spirit and history of the “Old West” Dodge City alive with the success of a unique and fun business. In her spare time, Julie enjoys camping, spending time at the lake, reading, and baking. “We are incredibly excited to have these two ladies on our team.” says owner Hayes Kelman, “they will be a huge asset to the distillery.” In addition to their day-to-day operations, you may also find them giving tours, working the bar in the Tasting Room, or helping with distillery events around town! “Both are new to Dodge City, so if you see them around town or at the distillery, please give them a warm welcome!”, says Director of Sales, Lee Griffith
ROTO-MIX NAMES NEW PRESIDENT AND PROMOTIONS Rod Neier, Chief Executive Officer of RotoMix, LLC today announced the following promotions within the company: Kelly Wittman has been promoted to the position of President and Chief Operating Officer. “Kelly has been a valued and dedicated member of the Roto-Mix organization for over 28 years. His broad range of experience at Roto-Mix, combined with his knowledge of the cattle feeding industry, is an excellent fit for this role” said Neier. Former President and Chief Operating Officer, Mark Cooksey, has accepted a position as Executive Advisor with Roto-Mix and will continue to serve on the Senior Management Team. Neier said in the announcement, “We sincerely appreciate Mark’s 26 years of dedicated service with Roto-Mix and look forward to his new role with the company”. Jim Bell has been promoted to Director of Manufacturing Operations. Neier said, “Jim’s 26 years of manufacturing experience and knowledge within the Roto-Mix organization will enable him to direct our manufacturing operations and implement further measures to improve manufacturing efficiency.” In other announcements, Bill Becker has been promoted to Plant Manager and Mike Nairn has been promoted to Assistant Plant Manager, both at the Hoisington, KS location. Neier said, “Bill and Mike’s collective experience and dedication will enable them to successfully guide the operations at our Hoisington Plant.” Roto-Mix’s new president, Kelly Wittman has been with Roto-Mix since 1991 when he started with the Engineering Department. He moved to the company’s Hoisington manufacturing facility in 1993 serving in various roles, including Production Control and Plant Manager. In 2001 he relocated to the Dodge City headquarters to become Customer Service Manager. Within that role Kelly handled technical support, production scheduling and assisted with export sales. Kelly’s responsibilities grew when he began supervising the service/installation and scale department in Dodge City with the Scott City Service Center added later. He has been responsible for export sales and working directly with customers and dealers abroad. Kelly was the Director of Customer Service until his move to Vice President of Operations was announced in August of 2014. Since that time his list of duties expanded while gaining more management experience prior to his promotion to President and COO. Kelly lives in Dodge City with his wife Joni and son Alec. He enjoys spending time with family, watching Alec play high school sports and getting to the sand dunes whenever possible. The new Director of Manufacturing Operations, Jim Bell, started his career at Roto-Mix in September 1993. He trained at the Dodge City headquarters for six weeks while the Hoisington plant was being established. Jim completed weld training and returned to help with the plant preparation in Hoisington. Jim was a production welder for 4 years before he took the position of Weld Shop supervisor in 1997. At that time he began working closely with the lead people in every department. Jim continued to gain more knowledge and worked on building a quality product from start to finish. He was later moved to shop supervisor, working with production, engineering and management to maintain production schedules and provide timely delivery of service parts. Jim accepted the position of Hoisington Plant Manager in 2001. He continued to maintain and improve efficiency in production with a focus on taking care of the employees. Jim will continue improving production and quality as he accepts his new position. He will be responsible for all aspects of production at both the Dodge City and Hoisington locations. Jim lives in rural Barton County with his wife Elysia. He enjoys working on cars and motorcycles, going racing with his sons and motorcycle rides with his wife. Roto-Mix, LLC was founded in Dodge City, KS in 1984 where its headquarters and primary manufacturing plant are located. Since then the Company has grown to include an additional manufacturing facility in Hoisington, KS as well as company service centers in Dodge City and Scott City, KS. The marketing organization has over 150 dealers providing local sales and service in the U.S. and sales in over 35 international markets.

TRINITY MANOR WELCOMES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR IN NOVEMBER
Trinity Manor welcomed a new executive director in November. Marcia “Mali” Swann transfers here from another Frontline Management community in Elkhart. Mali is excited to remain in SW KS. Her primary goals for Trinity Manor are building a cheerful, stable team and collaboration with other entities in the area. She’s hoping to expand her community connections in the upcoming months. “Working together with other healthcare and long-term care providers enhances the continuity of care and improves the overall resident experience,” explains Swann. “Isolation benefits no one. Collaboration brings ideas and energy together for a successful future,” Mali went on to elaborate. Plus, she loves to have fun. “Retaining employees is always a challenge in heartintensive settings. I’m hoping to help our team realize what a difference they are making and enjoy the teamwork while caring for others.” Originally raised on a family farm in the panhandle of Oklahoma, Mali mostly grew up in Garden City. Her parents introduced her to long term care by adopting a grandparent in the local nursing home. Soon her mother’s parents needed more assistance; so, the family moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where the grandparents lived in half of a split-level house with them. After graduation, Mali returned to Kansas at Tabor College in Hillsboro, KS. She transferred back to South Dakota before graduating from the University of Sioux Falls. Eventually, Mali and her husband Steve moved to Ulysses, for the love of God and southwest Kansas. Pursuing an MBA had been on hold for a couple decades of child-rearing and many volunteer endeavors. Through Fort Hays State University, Mali was able to earn her degree while teaching classes at a partner school in China for two years. Trinity Manor may have a new leader at the helm, but she’s definitely a hometown-type with a southwest Kansas heart! Mali’s husband Steve pastors the Moscow Baptist Church.

The annual Bounty Bird with Rooster Roundup pheasant hunting contest prepares for the last month. The contest will end on January 31, 2020, the end of the pheasant hunting season. All bands will need to be registered by February 1st.

The City of Dodge City Human Resources Office has announced that Megan Welsh has been selected as the next Convention and Visitors Bureau Manager to follow the retirement of current CVB Director, Jan Stevens. Welsh has worked for the Dodge City CVB as a tourism Coordinator since 2017. “I’m excited for Megan to move into this new role,” Stevens said. “She has done a great job for us in the two and a half years she has been with us, and based on all her qualifications along with her drive, and I believe she will excel.” Welsh stated that she is ready for the challenge and the opportunity to increase her knowledge base of the tourism industry through this new position. “I look forward to the future of the CVB and continuing the work of elevating Dodge City to potential and returning tourists,” Welsh said. The transition of leadership for the Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau will be in full effect at the first of the year. A reception to honor Stevens is set to take place on December 19, 2019, at the Santa Fe Depot in the El Vaquero dining room from 4 pm to 6 pm.
Congratulations to Melissa Bell, who won $500 in Chamber Bucks and Larissa Medina, who won an 8 foot Stocking full of goodies for winning at the Mayor’s Holiday Giveaway Monday, December 9th. DC3 INDUCTS THREE TO HALL OF FAME Dodge City Community College inducted three recipients to its Hall of Fame at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. The ceremony and reception, which was hosted for the first time ever in the DC3 Library, drew a crowd of 65 people. The first recipient was Eldon Becker, who was honored for Outstanding Career Achievement. During his 30-year tenure at DC3 (1969 to 1999), he taught every sport, from badminton to his first passion, basketball, and he coached a fair number of teams as well. Becker was introduced by one of his former DC3 students, Stuart Chance. “Eldon has a unique way of interacting with his students,” Chance said, in his introduction. “It is a gift that not only helped them get through the classroom, but helped them later in life in whatever career path they chose. Mr. Becker put his students first. He always was there to assist them in reaching their highest potential.” Becker served as physical education professor, director of intramurals, assistant football coach, assistant basketball coach, head golf coach, division chair and athletic director. However, Becker is probably most remembered for the expansive reach of his sports officiating program, which gained him regional and national recognition. “I wanted to be a basketball coach for some reason, and it didn’t happen,” Becker said in his acceptance speech. “And then, this job came up, and people in my class at Fort Hays said, ‘Well, if you take a junior college job, you’ll end up there.’ And I said, ‘What’s wrong with that?’ And that’s exactly what happened.” Becker has continued to serve the college on various committees since his retirement, and he often can be spotted attending college events. He resides in Dodge City with his wife Joan. His family also includes a son, Brenton (Sheri), and a daughter, Julie. The second recipient was Jim Coffin, who was honored for Outstanding Voluntary Service Achievement. He attended DC3 from 1966-67. Although, Coffin was unable to attend the ceremony, DC3 Foundation Director, Christina Haselhorst spoke in his absence. “We’re very, very proud to have Jim as a part of our [DC3] Foundation Board and as a volunteer here at Dodge City Community College,” Haselhorst said. “Over the years he has donated quite a bit of his time and his money to fixing sidewalks and helping us create parking lots. And we’re very, very happy that he has had such a generous heart with Dodge City and our community.” J-A-G Construction Co. was established in Dodge City by Coffin’s parents, Bob & June Coffin, in 1962. In 1970, Coffin joined the company, and that same year, J-A-G decided to add a ready-mix concrete facility to the business. In 1986, Coffin took over the company from his father and began to operate both companies. Under his leadership, J-A-G continued to expand in the following years. In 1993, additional ready-mix concrete plants were added in Liberal, Kan., and Guymon, Okla. Five years later in 1998, Coffin acquired Dodge City Sand. And in 2001, another ready-mix concrete plant was purchased in Hooker, Okla. (In addition, J-A-G Construction also owns three portable cement plants.) Coffin and his wife, Marie, have two sons, Kris and Andy; and a grandson, Harrison James. The third recipient was Stacy Sparks, who was honored for Outstanding Service Achievement. She attended DC3 from 1978-79 as a student, and then returned in 1992 as a professor of journalism. Sparks was introduced by one of her former DC3 students, Lance Ziesch. “Stacy is an exceptional teacher, and she can be tough. She won’t let her students settle for mediocrity,” Ziesch said, in his introduction. “And she has an ability to see their hidden strengths and talents, and she knows how to channel them.” In his closing comments, Ziesch added, “Even now, almost 25 years after I had one of her classes, Stacy is still one of the people I call when I have big news.” From 1988-1992, Sparks served as the instructor of journalism, and also the sports information director, for St. Mary of the Plains College, Dodge City. Upon its closure in 1992, Sparks became a professor of journalism at DC3, serving from 1992-2006. During this time she also served as an adviser for The Conquistador newspaper and for Conquest magazine. In 2006, Sparks moved to Winfield, Kan., and became an associate professor of journalism and director of student media at Southwestern College. (She still serves in this capacity today.) “You know learning is really hard work,” Sparks said, in her acceptance speech. “I learned as a student, but I learned even more when I was a faculty member. I learned from my colleagues, and I learned a lot from my students. People at this college know that learning can be an adventure. It requires a roll-up-your-sleeves attitude and a commitment to accepting a challenge.” Sparks is married to husband Pat England. She has two daughters, Dana Sparks (Tyler) Cummins and Kara Sparks (Casey) Old; and three grandchildren, Claire, Caroline, and Cooper.

At the Kansas Association of City/County Management conference in Garden City during the first week of December, City of Dodge City Manager, Cherise Tieben, was recognized with a career achievement award at the KACM Business Meeting. Cherise is also the current president of KACM. Assistant City Manager/Legislative Affairs, Ernestor De La Rosa, was awarded the Early Career Excellence Award. Congratulations to both Ernestor and Cherise on their outstanding accomplishments.
Representatives from Foley Equipment Dodge City conducted job interviews with 9 DC3 diesel technology students on Thursday, Dec. 5, at the DC3 Tech Center. These interviews, which are good opportunities for our students to practice their interviewing skills, also can result in Foley summer internships and full-time employment after graduation.
Outgoing DC3 Board of Trustees members—Floris Jean Hampton, Terry Malone and Dr. Jeremy Presley—were honored for their years of service at the December Board Meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 10. Hampton served from 1985-1999 and 20072020; Malone served from 1989-2001, 2003-2009, and 2013-2020; and Presley served from 2013-2020.

DODGE CITY - The Kansas Horseshoe Pitchers Association (KHPA), a charter member of the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA), will host a sanctioned tournament at the 66th Annual 3i SHOW on Saturday, March 21, at 10:00 a.m. on the dirt floor side of the Western State Bank Expo Center. Interested participants can contact Jim Newboles at (620) 694-9463 to reserve their spot. With a mission to inform people in Kansas and beyond about the relatively unknown sport of organized horseshoe pitching, KHPA will be hosting smaller events all three days of the 2020 3i SHOW. No matter the skill level, attendees can participate in pitch offs, a small non-sanctioned tournament, and even a dollar pitch where whoever has the most points within the hour wins the pot. Multiple NHPA regulation portable courts will be set up meaning those not interested in the events can try their hand at pitching. Kansas Center for Entrepreneurship d.b.a. NetWork Kansas was created as a key component of the Kansas Economic Growth Act of 2004 to lead collaborative efforts between education, research and outreach services - as well as public sector organizations - in order to serve potential and existing entrepreneurs statewide. An integral part of this effort is providing seed capital to entrepreneurs and small business owners in rural and distressed areas of Kansas. The Kansas Center for Entrepreneurship and Tax Credit was created to stimulate this effort.
75 % TAX CREDIT Donors Recieve a 75% state income tax credit for their donation. a tax credit is dollar-for-dollar credit against state income tax liability. This means that for every $1000 donated, donors will receive $750 credit directly off their state income tax liability. Donors are also eligible to receive a federal and state tax deduction and should consult with their individual tax specialist to determine the amount of any deductions. A K-31 Form is required with the individual tax form and is available online through the Kansas Department of Revenue.
WHAT ARE THE INDIVIDUAL MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM ANNUAL TAX CREDITS ALLOWED? The minimum allowable tax credit per year is $187.50, which translates into a donation of $250. The maximum allowable credit per year is $100,000, which translates into a donation of $133,333.33. If the amount of the tax credit exceeds the contributor’s liability in the taxable year, the remaining portion of the credit may be carried forward until the total amount of credit is applied.
WHO CAN DONATE? Individuals, financial institutions*(banks and savings and loans), and corporations** can donate to the Kansas Center for Entrepreneurship.
WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO? Donations to the Center provide funding for entrepreneurship programs through local or regional nonprofit business support providers who are also NetWork Kansas resource partners. Entrepreneruship programs and matching loans are made available to businesses who are starting or expanding bhusiness. NetWork Kansas resource Partners include the Entrepreneruship Community Partnership, economic development agencies, small business development centers, and other non-profit organizations charged with assisting entreprenerus and small businesses in Kansas.
