Our Story

Force & Grace is a collection of the finest California wines from esteemed vintner Joseph Carr. Joseph Carr was a statechampion wrestler in high school and a student of modern dance in college. Force and Grace represents his love for these seemingly opposite disciplines and the analogy to fine wines — where the “force” of ripe fruit is balanced by the “grace” of bright acidity.

To make these remarkable wines, Joseph partnered with critically acclaimed winemaker, Jean Hoefliger, who honed his skills at worldrenowned wineries Château Lynch-Bages and Alpha Omega, among others. Drawing from profound experience working in the best appellations of Napa Valley and beyond, Jean has mastered the art of picking fruit at precisely the right moment to balance lush ripeness and clean acidity.

A life-long wine industry professional with a unique path to becoming a vintner, Joseph Carr is the inspiration for the brand. Long before his passion for wine began, Carr was both an avid wrestler and modern dance performer. The creation of Force & Grace honors the balance of force and grace in his life.

A winemaker with a quixotic mission, Jean Hoefliger believes that wine perfection doesn’t exist, but knows he’ll spend his entire life pursuing it. He’s a true wine artisan, with decades of experience and a stack of awards accompanied by a portfolio of highly rated wines to show for it. But his passions lie at the nexus of science and art, and how harnessing each properly can allow winemakers to push the envelope in new and fascinating directions that challenge the norm.

Exceptional California Appellations

Force & Grace sources fruit from the most acclaimed Napa Valley appellations, such as Oakville and Rutherford for Cabernet Sauvignon and Carneros for Chardonnay. We round out our portfolio with a complementary style from Paso Robles, the new darling of California Cabernet Sauvignon. Each of our wines reflects an assemblage of contrasting elements designed in harmony with nature, the force and grace that thrives in the best vineyards of California.

Winemaking

Meticulous by Nature

Our wines are crafted by highly regarded winemaker Jean Hoefliger, whose intimate understanding of Napa Valley ensures we source from the best sites and that every lot of fruit reaches its full potential. With an insatiable appetite for art, philosophy, and a good discussion, Jean is an artisan who thrives when his creativity and passion are left unbound by conventional thinking. Informed by years of experience and a meticulous nature, Jean starts with an exacting selection of beautiful fruit, transformed into wine through carefully monitored fermentation, blending and aging. With the heart of an artist and the questioning mind of a scientist, Jean adapts his approach to every vintage and variety, resulting in wines that speak to the art inside the bottle.

Artistry

The artwork featured on Force & Grace’s label is an adaptation of photographer Neal Grundy’s “Transient Sculptures”, a still life collection photographed in midflight. The truth of the project is all in its name. The sculptures are real, but only for a short fraction of time. They seem solid but are nothing more than fabrics thrown into the air that take shapes, roll up on themselves and stay suspended in time. Neal injects explosive energy into each work to symbolize the transformative and magical moment of each sip of wine.

Augmented Reality invites users to journey into the world of fine wine and art. Each bottle in the Force & Grace collection includes an integrated QR code to experience the wine as an interactive canvas, a doorway to our Winemaker’s Lounge and Artist’s Workshop inspired by the harmony between winemaking, artistry and storytelling.
