THE MISSION OF CORAM DEO ACADEMY Coram Deo Academy exists to partner with parents to provide a classical education through intentional discipleship that inspires Christlike character, a love of learning, and joyful submission to our Lord Jesus.

THE VISION OF CORAM DEO ACADEMY Coram Deo Academy endeavors to ground students in the inerrant Word of God and provide a culture where children mature in confidence and faithfulness in their Christian faith. Our deep hope is that through academic excellence – aimed at truth – we equip students to not be taken captive by vain philosophies and thereby foster evangelism and cultural dominion.

PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION Coram Deo Academy trains image bearers and thereby offers excellence in education that serves all Christian students. Our structure, pedagogy and fields of study are designed to help students take the natural abilities that God has given and invest them to advance the kingdom. We do this through integrated fields of study, integrated ages, whole school learning, and a structure that fosters mastery. Founded on a Christian worldview, we train students how to think and not what to think. Through the proper use of the Trivium, as a tool, students move from concrete concepts to philosophical considerations. Each subject is studied –comprehensively– in light of the truth of Scripture. By offering a three-day core model, we give valuable time to families, truly creating a partnership in discipling children. ●

EDUCATION FOR THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Coram Deo Academy aims to teach students of all ability levels through solid Christian pedagogy and materials. Because we are able to take both conventional and unique learners (even those diagnosed with ASD), our program is very distinct. We offer classical teaching as input but only expect classical output based on the gifting of each individual student. Our teaching is done in a one-room style setting, where we implement the Trivium and move from the concrete to the philosophical as the students are ready. We believe that those diagnosed with a learning disability, as well as those with developmental delays or trauma, are not defined by their condition. They are first and foremost “Image Bearers of the Living God.” These uniquely gifted and sometimes hurting children have a mind, a body, and a soul and have the same needs and desires as other children. For some, the difference is in their hyper-sensory skills, which can overload their minds. For others, they need added assistance in various behavior and academic areas. Because of this, our goal is to give these children a learning environment that helps them organize their sensory systems, see themselves as an integral part of God’s world, and invest the talents that God has given them. We do not use the child’s condition as an excuse for sin. However, we may make academic and behavioral accommodations for children at the recommendation of the Education Council upon review of diagnostic information and or circumstances. This decision will not be automatic. Per the request of a parent, we will seek professional advice, pray, and consult with invested parties to come up with the best decision for the student and community. While our goal is straightforward, the way we accomplish this for each child is complex. Because each child is an image-bearer of God and is created with unique gifts and struggles, we believe it is important to individualize their instruction without compromising the community. We employ a variety of methods to help our students learn to focus their minds and calm their bodies, so they can grow in their love for God and neighbor. Our ambition is to serve all learners, but only to the extent that we are able to serve that particular student’s disabilities within our structure and facility.

OUR DISTINCTIVE IN SERVING THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS 1. Very low student/teacher ratio, allowing true individualized learning plans. 2. Integrated ages, where students move through milestones rather than age-related grades. 3. Fewer subjects. 4. Minimal homework in the younger years, with this expanding over time. 5. The teacher provides curriculum individualized education.

OUR CULTURE STATEMENT OF FAITH The Scriptures We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the verbally inspired Word of God, the final authority for faith and life, inerrant in the original writings, infallible, and God-breathed. (2 Tim 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:20-21, Matt 5:18, John 16:12-13) The Godhead We believe in one Triune God, eternally existing in three persons — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — coeternal in being, coeternal in nature, coequal in power and glory, and having the same attributes and perfections. (Deut 6:4, 2 Cor 13:14) The Person and Work of Christ We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary, in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful man. (John 1:1-2, 14, Luke 1:35) We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished our redemption through His death on the cross as a representative, vicarious, substitutionary sacrifice; and that our justification is made sure by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead. (Rom 3:24, 1 Peter 2:24, Eph 1:7, 1 Peter 1:3-5) We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God, where, as our High Priest, He fulfills the ministry of Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate. (Acts 1:9-10, Heb 7:25; 9:24, Rom 8:34, 1 John 2:1-2) The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit We believe that the Holy Spirit is a person who convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment; and that He is the Supernatural agent in regeneration, baptizing all believers into the Body of Christ, indwelling and sealing them unto the day of redemption. (John 16:8-11, 2 Cor 3:6, 1 Cor 12:12-14, Rom 8:9, Eph 5:18) The Total Depravity of Man We believe that man was created in the image and likeness of God, but that through Adam's sin the race fell, inherited a sinful nature, and became alienated from God; and that man is totally depraved,

and of himself utterly unable to remedy his lost condition. (Gen 1:26-27, Rom 3:22-23; 5:12, Eph 2:1-3, 12) Salvation We believe that salvation is the gift of God brought to man by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed on Calvary for the forgiveness of our sins. (Eph 2:8-10, John 1:12, Eph 1:7, 1 Peter 1:18-19) Eternal Security and Assurance of Believers We believe that all the redeemed, once saved, are kept by God's power and are thus secure in Christ forever. (John 6:37-40; 10:27-30, Rom 8:1, 38-39, 1 Cor 1:4-8, 1 Peter 1:5) We believe it is the privilege of believers to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation through the testimony of God's Word, which clearly forbids the use of Christian liberty as an occasion to the flesh. (Rom 13:13-14, Gal 5:13, Titus 2:11-15) The Ministry and Spiritual Gifts We believe that God is sovereign in the bestowing of spiritual gifts. It is, however, the believer's responsibility to attempt to develop their sovereignly given spiritual gift(s). The baptism of the Holy Spirit occurs at conversion and is the placing of the believer into the Body of Christ. We also believe that particular spiritual gift(s) are neither essential (proving the presence of the Holy Spirit) nor an indication of deep spiritual experience. (1 Cor 12:7, 11, 13, Eph 4:7-8) We believe that God does hear and answer the prayers of faith, in accord with His own will, for the sick and afflicted. (John 15:7, 1 John 5:14-15) We believe it is the privilege and responsibility of every believer to minister according to the gift(s) and grace of God given to him. (Rom 12:1-8, 1 Cor 13, 1 Peter 4:10-11)

The Church We believe that the Church, which is the Body and espoused Bride of Christ, is a spiritual organism made up of all born-again persons. (Eph 1:22-23; 5:25-27, 1 Cor 12:12-14, 2 Cor 11:2) We believe that the establishment and continuance of local churches is clearly taught and defined in the New Testament Scriptures. (Acts 14:27; 18:22; 20:17, 1 Tim 3:1-3, Titus 1:5-11) We believe in the autonomy of the local churches, free of any external authority and control. (Acts 13:1-4, 15:19-31 & 20:28, Rom 16:1, 4, 1 Cor 3:9, 16; 5:4-7, 13, 1 Peter 5:1-4) We recognize believer's baptism and the Lord's Supper as scriptural means of testimony for the church. (Matt 28:19-20, Acts 2:41-42 & 18:8, 1 Cor 11:23-26)

CULTURAL ISSUES Coram Deo Academy believes that all human life is sacred and that we are created in the image of God and called to defend and protect that life. We believe there are two distinct genders, male and female, and together they reflect the image and nature of God and the Biblical meaning of “marriage” described in Scripture. (Gen. 2:18-25). Coram Deo Academy is committed to a healthy discussion of this issue in a way that values all those of other opinions, yet does not compromise our values. Our ultimate goal is Christian unity within the parameters of the Apostles’ Creed and the truth of Scripture.

OVERARCHING CULTURE When God made humans, He made us in his own image, a community reflective of His triune nature with the capacity to love, as He has loved. In the last century, schools have assumed a fragmented view that reduces a person to an individual in need of knowledge. At Coram Deo Academy, we believe in discipling the whole person to love God and love and honor all people.

DISCIPLINE POLICY The two greatest commandments are to love God and love our neighbors; therefore, our classroom and school discipleship is focused with this in mind. Our goal with discipline is to bring a student back into fellowship with our school body when they have sinned. Our discipleship plan embodies this understanding as we serve alongside parents in training children in godliness.

ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY Use of personal electronic devices (i.e. phones, smart phones, portable gaming devices, smart watches, etc.) by students is prohibited on campus. Such devices must be put on silent or turned off and left in bags or backpacks while a student is at school or on campus. Any use of phones must be approved by the Head of School or the Secretary. ●

Use of laptops is permissible for secondary academic purposes only under the pre-approved direction

and supervision of a teacher. ●

A first violation of this policy will result in immediate confiscation of the device, to be released to a parent or guardian.

●

A second violation of this policy will result in a parent conference with the Head of School.

●

A third violation of this policy will result in a Disciplinary Hearing.

●

Coram Deo Academy accepts no responsibility for use, breakage, theft, or loss of phone or other personal items.

CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM Cheating is defined as looking at another’s work without the teacher’s permission, or communicating with another during an exam without the teacher’s permission. Plagiarism is defined as using another’s work without thanking them for the use. If either cheating or plagiarism is noticed, the assignment or exam will immediately receive a score of 0 and parents will be notified. A second cheating or plagiarism infraction will result in a Disciplinary Hearing.

UNIFORM VIOLATION If a Uniform Policy violation is identified, a ClassReach form will be completed by the faculty member. This will notify the designated Dress Code Monitor. If a Uniform Policy infraction has occurred, the monitor will inform parents via an automated ClassReach notification. After four Dress Code Violations have occurred, an Office Visit will be scheduled following the Office Visit protocol. After the 5th violation within the same school term, the student will be sent home. Subsequent Dress Code Violations will require the Head of School to initiate Office Visits in accordance with the applicable Discipline Plan.

PRIMARY STUDENT DISCIPLINE PLAN The rule is love God and love your neighbor. 1. If a student is overtly disrespectful to authority, an immediate Office Visit will follow. 2. If there is unloving behavior in the classroom, during breaks, or at lunchtime, the teacher who observed the situation will give a warning and correct the behavior. 3. If a second infraction occurs, the infraction will be documented through a ClassReach form. 4. If an infraction occurs during a break, the student’s lead teacher will be notified and the infraction will be documented accordingly. 5. If a third infraction occurs, the teacher will send the child to the Head of School for an Office Visit,

with information specifying the issue being provided. a.

The Head of School will notify the parents through a ClassReach email, reporting what occurred and the discipline given.

6. HOMEWORK a.

Any missing homework (for students who are present) will be entered as a “0” in ClassReach so that parents are notified. The late assignment policy is 10% grade reduction the first day, 20% reduction the second day, and a standing “0” will follow.

SECONDARY STUDENT DISCIPLINE PLAN The rule is love God and love your neighbor. 1. If a student is overtly disrespectful to authority, an immediate Office Visit will follow. 2. If a student is speaking inappropriately, an immediate Office Visit will follow. 3. If a student has not completed homework, the parents will be notified through ClassReach. 4. HOMEWORK a.

If an Office Visit occurs, the Head of School will send a discipline note to the parents.

EXCESSIVE OFFICE VISITS As noted above, the purpose of the Discipline Policy is to shape godly character in the student. If it becomes apparent to the Head of School that the student’s character is not improving over time and/or is becoming worse to the detriment of the school culture, the Head of School will meet with the parents and they will come up with a plan to resolve the issue. The Head of School will also meet with the parents in cases where the student exhibits a lack of repentance or lacks interest in attending Coram Deo Academy. The Head of School may, at his discretion, allow for additional meetings with the parents if the previous Discipline Plan to help the student was unsuccessful. To help the parents understand their child’s behavior, they may be required to sit with the student during a part or all of the school day. If the Head of School determines that the student’s behavioral issue still cannot be corrected through the Discipline Plan(s) generated by the meeting(s) with the parents, then it will be considered a “Serious Discipline Case.”

SERIOUS DISCIPLINE CASES A Serious Discipline Case occurs when a student exhibits extreme ungodly behavior that impedes the culture of the school on or off campus. Examples include, but are not limited to: 1. Excessive Office Visits (see section of the same name above) 2. Unrepentant, consistent, or serious disrespect of authority 3. Unsafe behavior – endangerment to themselves or others 4. Overt moral issues, including, but not limited to: a.

Inappropriate touching

b. Substance abuse c. Illegal activity If the Head of School has determined that the student’s words or behavior constitute a Serious Discipline Case, the student will be subject to a Discipline Hearing before a designated Discipline Council that includes, but is 11

not limited to: the Head of School, an Education Council member, and at least one Elder (for a minimum of three members). Parents and the student (if age appropriate) will be present at the Discipline Hearing. At this point, the Discipline Council will determine the necessary course of action, which may include suspension or expulsion of the student. Tuition will not be reimbursed for suspensions or expulsions.

OUR PROGRAM & PHILOSOPHIES EDUCATION SCHEDULE Coram Deo Academy offers a 3-day core academic structure. Students are placed in learning groups based on their reading ability. Students progress through these learning groups as they grow in their skills. Because each child is uniquely designed, some students may progress more quickly than others. Our learning group model affords both delays and accelerations through the learning levels. Fields of study are offered across the school at the same time so that students can go to the class that fits their learning needs.

OUR CURRICULUM At Coram Deo Academy, we believe that curriculum is a tool, which is essential, but the teacher brings education to life through use of that tool. As such, in addition to using various curricula and a developed list of skills and objectives, we will obtain the most qualified and dedicated teachers possible, teachers who exemplify a love of learning and point students to Jesus Christ through immersing their teaching in goodness, beauty, and truth. Assignments will be given and directed by Coram Deo Academy faculty. Students that need assistance may have parental aid, but assignments must be completed as directed. The final aim of every subject taught: To fall in love with God is the greatest romance; to seek him the greatest adventure; to find him, the greatest human achievement. - Augustine

HUMANITIES To study Humanities is to study the image bearers of God. This is a quintessential part of Christian education, as students watch the epic story of God’s world unfolding. To study History is to give those that have gone before us a voice into the future. To study Literature is to analyze and discern characters and see truths or lies, goodness or evil, and beauty or ugliness. To study Theology is to study the King of Kings. Our Humanities puts the teacher in the position of guide in order to aid students in navigating context, bias, original sources, and stories. Students then use that information to discern truth.

BIBLE Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter 1:6. The whole counsel of God concerning all things necessary for His own glory, man’s salvation, faith and life, is either expressly set down in Scripture, or by good and necessary consequence may be deduced from Scripture: unto which nothing at any time is to be added, whether by new revelations of the Spirit or traditions of men. (2 Tim. 3:15–17, Gal. 1:8–9, 2 Thess. 2:2) Nevertheless, we acknowledge the inward illumination of the Spirit of God to be necessary for the saving understanding of such things as are revealed in the Word: (John 6:45, 1 Cor 2:9–12) and that there are some circumstances concerning the worship of God, and government of the Church, common to human actions and societies, which are to be ordered by the light of nature, and Christian prudence, according to the general rules of the Word, which are always to be observed. (1 Cor. 11:13–14, 1 Cor. 14:26, 40). Partner with parents to teach Biblical History, Biblical Law, Biblical Wisdom, and a foundational hermeneutic for interpretation. ART Humans are creative because they reflect the Creator. Nurturing creative ability and appreciation of the

beautiful is a necessary apologetic for the goodness of Christ's kingdom. Beauty is an objective reality under the goodness of God. Good Art is an amplification or reflection of the beauty God has given us. Therefore, Good Art and its appreciation is a key aspect of worship. The study of Art enables us to make the world around us beautiful, which continues the creative activity of the Lord God in all areas of life, from dishes to skyscrapers.

MUSIC Worship is eternal. Musicality is therefore an eternal skill that we should develop and hone. Coram Deo Academy will have singing interwoven into the fabric of our school, as God interweaves music into the fabric of creation. We will do this while also building the theory and skill necessary for elevating music. The pursuit of Music is a worthy calling, even for those not naturally gifted. Therefore, technique, worship, practice, and community will be integral to the Music Program at Coram Deo Academy.

SCIENCE Our philosophy of Science is best captured by Psalm 19:1-6:

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above[a] proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice[b] goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat. We believe that the study of God’s creation reveals His handiwork. Science should instill wonder and curiosity at the “how” of nature while understanding the magic of creation. Ultimately, the purpose of studying Science should help equip a Christian to fulfill the Genesis mandate of dominion. The true study of Science informs our worldview and does not stand in opposition to faith, but declares God’s power.

MATHEMATICS God is a God of order and His unchanging nature is revealed in the study of Mathematics. By building mastery, based on a child's skill rather than their age, we progress through the complexity of concepts to develop reasoning skills. We tie Mathematics into other fields of study so that students understand that all learning is integrated. We allow time for mastery, therefore our Math progression moves slower and deeper. We pose problems for students to solve and coach them in how to puzzle to a conclusion. This, integrated with logical reasoning, is a skill that can serve the student in discernment. Mathematics solve for objective truth, and this purpose translates to all of life. Rightly understood, Mathematics is a beautiful reflection of the Creator Himself.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION We are educating the whole person, mind, body, and soul. Each aspect of the whole person is sharpened by the others. Physical fitness is not for glorification of self, but it is directed at self-discipline, which blesses the body of Christ. We are physical beings that live in community, and physical activities create fellowship. Therefore, our goal “fit to be festive” includes: gaining strength, self-discipline, and ultimately glorifying God with our body. We use Physical Education for this purpose, and train through a variety of means. The aim, therefore, is to bless the community while simultaneously fostering a disciplined life.

PHILOSOPHY OF RECESS Recess is for joy. Recess is for practicing previous skills training. Games combine both joy and practice. Competition brings community, peace, and harmony into tension. The resolution of tension and restoration of communal peace are skills for life in community.

PHILOSOPHY OF GRADING GRADING POLICY Grades at Coram Deo Academy do not, in any way, reflect the immeasurable worth and value of each child made in God’s image, but rather an accurate reflection of the quality of work in a given field of study at a given time. At Coram Deo Academy, grades serve three basic purposes:

1. To help students improve. 2. To determine the best placement level for a young student's academic ability. 3. To provide a just and legitimate means of holding students accountable for the quality of their work. Grades provide a widely understood means of communicating progress and achievement to parents and other parties, such as college entrance boards or other schools to which the young student may transfer. We have established a balanced and objective grading system based on these values.

INDIVIDUAL GRADES Coram Deo Academy will use a unique method of grading that ensures students have time to “practice” before they receive a grade. Therefore, regular “feedback” grades, or “soft grades” on new concepts, will be internally kept while grades that affect overall standings will be recorded in our software for transcripts. Consistent with educating the whole child, both attitude and effort will be considered within our grading systems.

GROUP PROJECT GRADES Group projects are a part of coursework and it should be expected that grading of these will not be individualized because we believe that character in community reveals the heart: I Thessalonians 5: 14 “And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.” Because Coram Deo Academy cares even more about the heart than the academics, group projects allow teachers to see where character work is needed. Since we are preparing students for life, not just college, character in Christian community is integral to “Loving God and Loving Neighbor.”

MATHEMATICS GRADING POLICY Because Math problems are objectively right or wrong, grading will follow a simple number correct out of the number of problems, but this will also be graded alongside orderly submissions and penmanship. Exercises that are philosophically based will follow the Humanities scale (see below).

SCIENCE GRADING POLICY Since Science is taught through experiments and discovery, this will be a participation and group project grade in the Primary years and will move towards mastery grading through the various scientific fields of study in the Secondary years.

LATIN GRADING POLICY Latin is taught to build vocabulary and continue to grow English, as well as Latin grammar skills. Assessments will be based on these concepts and points awarded for the purpose of revealing mastery.

HUMANITIES GRADING POLICY Vocabulary terms, spelling, grammar, and direct character names or dates will be objectively graded and will be on a points-based system. With Mastery as our goal, students will be asked to correct wrong answers. Assignments that are more philosophical in nature will be graded on a scale. Within each assignment, grammatical and spelling mistakes will be clearly marked and students will be asked to review the word or grammatical rule and “edit” their writing. This promotes mastery in writing assignments.

FAILING AND RETAKES A student who has simply failed for a lack of understanding may be given another opportunity to prove their understanding after further practice. A student who neglected their studies and, therefore, failed, may not be given a retake opportunity. If a student fails an entire course, the student, parents, and teacher will meet with the Education Council to determine the best course of action for the student. Circumstances, understanding of directions, and effort will all be taken into consideration. Parents will be notified if a student is repeatedly failing in a skill.

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL School begins at 8:00 AM. Students are able to arrive between 7:45 and 8:00 AM. School ends at 2:30 PM. Students need to be picked up no later than 2:45 PM. Earlier arrival or later pick up will incur an additional fee.

ATTENDANCE Coram Deo Academy has intentionally set its vacations, schedule, and structure to allow important time for families. By registering a child in Coram Deo Academy, the parent or guardian is agreeing to this schedule, and it is loving to the community of students to be in attendance. Emergencies or important family events arise from time to time. Therefore, students have six academic days (the equivalent of two weeks) within each school term for school absences without consequence to their credits, unless pre-approvals are arranged. We ask that teachers be notified as soon as possible for any absences. Due to the nature of Classical education, pre-work is not easy to deliver and, therefore, will not be given prior to absences. The family is responsible for collecting any work missed. In cases of sickness, please notify the school through the ClassReach form provided. Absences that are not due to sickness or emergencies need to be pre-approved. For prolonged periods of absence (to extend beyond the six academic days - the equivalent of two weeks), please get pre-approval from the Head of School. *Emergency situations will obviously be taken into consideration.

TARDIES A student who arrives later than 8:00 AM is consideredTardy. Four unexcused Tardies within a month will

result in an email to the parents. A fifth Tardy will result in an Office Visit. Subsequent unexcused Tardies will be treated as Office Visits, in accordance with the Discipline Policy.

PARENT COMMUNICATION AND INVOLVEMENT At Coram Deo Academy, we recognize that parents are ultimately responsible for the education and flourishing of their children. We believe that educators are facilitators and advisors as parents pursue this important work. Thursday afternoons, from 2:30 to 3:00, will be reserved for parents to schedule a Parent Teacher Conference. ClassReach communication will be sufficient for regular communication needs. Teachers may be contacted through ClassReach outside of regular working hours. When addressing any concerns, parents should copy the Head of School to keep the school informed of classroom circumstances. Teachers will do the same when addressing concerns via emails with parents. If you have a concern about curriculum content, Coram Deo Academy policy, or philosophy, communicate with the Head of school. If you have questions about the weekly workings of a particular classroom (homework, workload, etc.), contact the teacher through ClassReach. At no time should an individual student’s problem be addressed to non-involved parties. In the great majority of cases, if you have worked patiently and in good faith with the teacher and directors, you will find a satisfactory resolution. Please follow Matthew 18:15 to determine the proper order of communication: “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.”

PARENT HONOR CODE (to be completed in ClassReach) I am placing my child as a student at Coram Deo Academy because I care about my child being educated both in character and in academics. I understand that my child will be educated under a Christian worldview and that loving God and neighbor are primary tenants of Coram Deo Academy. Part of loving God and neighbor means being on time, present, and respectful. Coram Deo Academy has been very thoughtful in developing a school schedule that allows for solid family time during summers, holidays, and various breaks. For this reason, I understand that school attendance is a way of loving teachers and classmates, and I will ensure that my child is present and on time unless an emergency arises. In cases of planned absences or important family time, I understand that it is my responsibility to communicate with the teachers and make a 21

plan for the class time my child will miss without putting an excessive burden on the teachers. I also understand that poor attendance may cause my child to fall behind. I understand that a Dress Code is a way of loving those around us by respecting a unified and meaningful representation of our school culture, including professionalism, modesty, and our distinct values. I will make sure that my child follows the uniform policy so that this culture is maintained. I understand that my child will need to submit to the authority of Coram Deo Academy faculty and staff during school events. I also understand that I will be ultimately responsible for my child’s behavior while at Coram Deo Academy and, thereby, will follow the directives of the school as outlined below. If a discipline note goes home from a teacher or the Head of School, I understand that I need to work with my child on changing their behavior through the heart, by encouraging them to pray and seek forgiveness. If my child continues to incur infractions, it will be clear to me that I need to deal more seriously and consistently with my child. I also understand that my child will be dealt with in accordance with the Discipline Policy outlined in this handbook and that I will need to meet with the Discipline Council in cases of “serious discipline issues.” I understand that the teachers at Coram Deo Academy aim to educate the whole person and will keep the wellbeing of the student in mind. Therefore, all efforts will be made to not impede grading, as it may affect my child’s next steps. By enrolling my child in Coram Deo Academy, I understand the important mission to special needs children. I know that with this may come exposure for my child to unique behaviors, such as fits, undressing in inappropriate places (typical of autism), and or outbursts not common to most classrooms. I understand that Coram Deo Academy will notify me if my child is exposed to such a behavior, or if my child exhibits such a behavior. I also understand that, no matter the special need, behavior that falls into the category of “serious discipline case,” including unsafe behavior that endangers others, or overt moral issues, will be addressed through a Discipline Hearing and not excused due to the special need.

HEALTH & WELLNESS LUNCH Students will bring packed lunches to be eaten in our multi-purpose room. Please pack lunches that do not have to be heated or refrigerated. Please also alert us of any allergies your child has so we can accommodate them, as needed, and alert other families (if the allergy is very severe). At Coram Deo Academy, we value health and wellness, so please keep this in mind when packing lunches.

SNACKS Parents are welcome to send a snack for mid-morning that is easy to eat. Water is the only beverage allowed to accompany snacks.

HEALTH INFORMATION Coram Deo Academy should be notified of any severe allergies or health concerns.

ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICINES Coram Deo Academy administration is willing to administer any over-the-counter medication to the children in their care, but only with authorization from the child’s parent or guardian. Prescription medication can be administered only when the following conditions are met: 1. The medicine is brought to Coram Deo Academy in its original container by the parent and is delivered directly to the designated administrators. Under no circumstances should a child handle his or her medication (exceptions will be assessed on a case by case basis). 2. A note from the prescribing doctor is provided that states dosage, frequency, and a list of possible side effects. Pharmacy-printed information may be accepted in lieu of a doctor’s note. Coram Deo Academy reserves the right to refuse the responsibility of prescription administration for any reason. If this occurs, we will be happy to accommodate parent visits during the day for the purpose of medication administration. Basic pain medication will be on hand for distribution by the school staff, if approved by a parent through the ClassReach form.

ILLNESS POLICY In consideration of your student’s wellness, in addition to preventing the spread of illness to your child’s classmates and teachers, a student should be symptom-free for a full 24 hours from the following before returning to onsite classes: ●

Fever - Temperature of 101 degrees or above without the use of fever-reducing medication

Vomiting/diarrhea

●

Persistent cough accompanied by dark mucous

NOTE: If your child has a contagious illness, such as Strep Throat or Pinkeye, please remain home until symptoms clear.

CHILD SAFETY POLICY All faculty and staff receive Criminal Background Checks every two years and are required to complete a Child Safety Course. The “More Than Two Rule” of student/faculty gatherings is our standard protocol. During one-on-one pullouts, clear visibility will be maintained at all times through an open door or window. Faculty may not initiate or facilitate any private or isolated types of communication with students that might be interpreted as unprofessional. All faculty communication with students shall be through the Messages system in ClassReach, where parents are automatically copied.

ENROLLMENT POLICY Regarding Candidates for Admissions: All children are welcome to apply for Admission. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, or religion. However, our statement of faith, mission, and vision are clear. Our aim is to disciple students, teaching them all that Jesus commanded. Children diagnosed with a learning disability are welcome to be a part of Coram Deo Academy, so long as they can meet, or be assisted to meet, the discipline standards of the classroom, discussions, and daily routine. Students applying for admissions should have a desire to receive this form of education. We do not mind assisting parents in fostering this desire, but the student needs to, at the very least, be “willing to be made willing” to be discipled.

PART-TIME STUDENTS (3-DAY CORE) Coram Deo Academy desires to assist as many students as possible. However, the structure of the school necessitates a community of students working together. For this reason, Coram Deo Academy will not take part-time students unless unique circumstances are involved.

À LA CARTE COURSEWORK Coram Deo Academy may, in the future, offer “Enrichment Courses” on off-days that might be available for part-time students.

FINANCIAL AID Financial Aid may be requested, but families are strongly urged to seek assistance from their family, churches, and friends prior to seeking Financial Aid from Coram Deo Academy. We are partnering in education with families and we are run solely on private funds. Therefore, every dollar not collected in Tuition is a dollar that must be raised through donations. The best advocate for their child is the parent and family. But, we also don’t want finances to be the reason a family does not attend Coram Deo Academy. Therefore, Financial Aid may be offered under certain circumstances of extreme need. Multi-student aid may be available under specified circumstances. Families will need to apply for Financial Aid through a privately shared link. Financial Aid will be discussed through the Finance Committee.

MAINTAINING EXCELLENCE Coram Deo Academy will be seeking excellence by seeking consistent feedback on our teachers, our students, and our administration. We want our teachers to become “master” teachers and, as such, will be investing in their further education through various classes, training, and enrichment. We will also be holding them to a high standard to ensure excellence in academics. 1.

Teachers will submit an Academic Mapping schedule by September 1 of each year.

2. Teachers will submit a Lesson Plan with clear objectives by Friday of the week preceding classes. This will be reviewed by the Head of School. 3. At the weekly Staff Meeting, teachers will explain how they met the objectives and discuss any struggling students or extra needs. 4.

Every week, the details of teaching these objectives and how they were met will be discussed. Student progress is integral to this discussion. This will be done for all core subjects and with all teachers.

5. The teacher will also need to present their plan on how to assess that students have learned and engaged with the objectives. This develops a very personalized education and holds teachers accountable for their instruction. This outlined process keeps the Coram Deo Academy Education Council informed about all learning processes and the academic welfare of each student at the forefront of our objectives.

SCHOOL GOVERNANCE AND ACCREDITATION Accreditation: While there is not an accrediting body for this model of school, we will seek excellence through constant assessment of our practices and pedagogy. If accreditation for our model of education would benefit our student body, then we may pursue accreditation through an appropriate avenue.

CORAM DEO ACADEMY LEADERSHIP Coram Deo Academy is a ministry of Coram Deo Church and, thereby, falls under the direct governance of the Coram Deo Church Elder Board.

The academic considerations, daily schedules, budgets, faculty, and enrollment processes are governed by an appointed sub-committee of the Eldership (specifically, the Coram Deo Academy Education Council).
