Holiday foods

not to feed to dogs

Candy & chocolate

Contain toxins like theobromine or xylitol that can cause vomiting, tremors, or worse.

Stuffing

Often made with onions, butter, and spices that can harm your pup’s digestive system.

Pumpkin pie

Sugar, spices, and dairy can lead to stomach upset or diarrhea.

Onions, garlic, & chives

Contain compounds that can damage red blood cells and cause life-threatening anemia.

Alcohol

Even small amounts can cause intoxication, poisoning, or death.

Bread dough

Yeast expands in the stomach, creating pressure and releasing alcohol during fermentation—both dangerous.

If your dog eats something toxic

Contact your veterinarian or a pet emergency clinic right away.

You can also call the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661 (a fee applies) or chat live with a licensed vet through Chewy’s Connect with a Vet service.

Say cheese

How to get picture-perfect holiday photos with your pets.

Call attention to the camera

Have a friend hold your pet’s favorite toy or treat near the lens so they look right at it.

Pick the perfect spot

Choose a cozy, well-lit place like near your tree or fireplace. Avoid flash; natural light works best.

Break out the treats

Practice “sit” and “stay” before photo day. Reward calm behavior and keep sessions short—especially for cats.

Strike a pose

Plan your setup ahead— you’ll have only a few focused minutes before your pet loses interest.

Dress the part

If your pet isn’t used to clothes, try a festive collar or bandana instead. Comfort first, always.

Have fun

Play music, laugh, and celebrate the moment. The joy you share will shine through every photo.

What you’ll need

• Cardboard (Chewy shipping box)

• Pencil

• X-Acto knife

• Ornament template

Instructions

Attach ribbon with hot glue or punch a hole to hang. 1 2 3 4 5

Trace onto cardboard, score edges, and cut carefully. Use the first cutout to trace and cut a second piece.

On one piece, draw a line from bottom to halfway up; on the other, from top to halfway down. Cut along both lines.

Slide pieces together to form the ornament. Add a drop of glue if it’s loose.

How to

cat-proof your Christmas tree

Celebrate safely with these simple tips.

Choose a small artificial tree

Choose a small, sturdy artificial tree. It’s lighter, safer, and free of toxic needles. Anchor it to the wall or ceiling for stability.

Pick the right spot

Keep your tree away from “launch pads” like furniture or shelves so curious climbers can’t jump aboard.

Create barriers

Use a pet gate or deterrents (like vinyl runners) around the base. Cover cords and block access to tree water.

Wait to decorate

Let your cat explore the tree before adding ornaments.

Use shatterproof décor and skip tinsel, ribbons, or fake snow—all can be dangerous if swallowed.

Paws off

These festive favorites look lovely— but can be toxic to pets.

(Euphorbia pulcherrima)

Their sap can cause drooling, vomiting, and mild skin irritation.

Pet-safe swap: Red roses (thornless varieties) add festive color without the risk.

2. Holly (Ilex aquifolium)

Leaves and berries can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and drowsiness.

Pet-safe swap: Pinstripe calathea brings cheerful greenery without side effects.

3. Mistletoe (Viscum album)

Every part is toxic and can cause severe symptoms, including vomiting, low blood pressure, or seizures.

Pet-safe swap: A spider plant offers safe, festive flair.

Give them their space

“Don’t overwhelm your pets by forcing them to interact with family members’ animals or small children. The holidays can be stressful for them, just like they can be for us.”

Dr. Kim Glowski Chewy Vet Care - Austin, TX

Skip the scraps

“Don’t give in and feed them food from the table. A trip to the ER is a great way to ruin the holiday!”

Dr. Elise Santos Chewy Vet Care - Aventura, FL

You’re their favorite gift

“They love you most of all, so make sure to include them in the festivities!”
