Blues, Brews, and Barbecue River season starts in valley

Celebrating 30 years of newspaper publishing

Local to run coast to coast By Phil Lindeman Mountaineer Staff Writer Ultra runner Markus Mueller is the first to admit he has bad feet. When Mueller said this to a small group of like-minded runners at the Eagle Valley Library yesterday, chuckles floated through the air. He was, of course, kidding. He had to be. But the proof is there: in 2000, he ran for 10 days straight during a footrace in New York, covering a total of 630 miles. That race taught him to properly treat

blisters and cut the backs off his shoes, right where they dig into the Achilles tendon. A year later, Mueller upped the ante to 63 days and 2,650 miles, crossing from Perth, Australia, to the nation’s capital in Canberra, dueling with temperatures above 100 degrees throughout. There,

he spent an agonizing third week limping to the starting point every morning. His shoes became even less recognizable after he removed the toecap, a trick he learned to improve ventilation. When he moved to the Eagle County from Germany in 2006, he immediately registered for the Leadville 100. The

race was his first experience with trail running, and it introduced his feet to an entirely new form of brutality, characterized by river crossings and dirt paths. “You get finished with that race, and your feet look like you’ve soaked them in water for 48 hours and banged on them with a rock the whole time,” Mueller said, showing the group an almost uncomfortably large close-up of the postrace damage: whitened skin with deep, canyon-like wrinkles, pockmarked with [See RUNNING, page 9]

Yemen clashes widen

Fighting spilled across Yemen’s capital and frightened residents fled or cowered in basements yesterday as a powerful militia alliance warned embattled President Ali Abdullah Saleh to either step down or face civil war. At least 28 people were killed as the four-day death toll neared 110. The bold ultimatum reflected the growing confidence among the opposition forces — led by Yemen’s largest tribe — that they could be gaining the upper hand against Saleh’s regime with the uprising shifting from near daily street protests to fast-moving urban combat. The escalating violence prompted the State Department to order nonessential U.S. diplomats and their families to leave the country.

Some of Joplin’s missing turn up safe

As emergency workers in Joplin searched yesterday for more than 230 people listed as missing after a tornado tore through the city, one was sitting on a wooden chair outside the wreckage of her home, cuddling her cat.

Embarking on a summer-long kayaking trip with the intent of raising money for local organization First Descents, Ross Herr and Brianne Horton are in Colorado and ready to raise some funds. The two are now selling raffle tickets for a kayak package that includes a Liquid Logic kayak of your choice, WRSI helmet, Werner Paddle, Snapdragon spray skirt and Stohlquist PFD. The package is valued at $1,600 and raffle tickets are on sale for $10 for one ticket or $50 for six tickets at kayakingross.com. 100 percent of the proceeds to go First Descents, an outdoor adventure camp for young adults dealing with cancer. By Phil Lindeman Mountaineer Staff Writer With names ranging from Glenwood Canyon Brewing Company to San Luis Valley Brewing, the list of 30-odd microbreweries set to invade Beaver Creek this weekend reads more like a Colorado geography lesson than a libation festival lineup. But that’s the point. The breweries are arguably the highlight of Blues, Brews, and Barbecue, Beaver Creek’s first summertime hurrah beginning at noon tomorrow. The other two B’s were only added in the last seven years, but the breweries have been a Memorial Day staple for nearly two decades. “Microbrews have really sprung up in the past five years, but we like to think we were ahead of the game,” said Erika Jensen, sales coordinator for the Park Hyatt Resort and Spa, which organizes the microbrew portion. “People enjoy the boutique beer scene.” Since its inception, only Colorado brewers have been invited to the Saturday afternoon tasting session, and Jensen claims the organizers have no intention of changing. This exclusivity helps attract fresh companies each year, including festival newcomers Rockyard Brewing Co., Dry Dock Brewing, and Eaglebased Bonfire Brewing.

Visitors to last summer’s Blues, Brews, and Barbecue event at Beaver Creek dig into ribs from one of several barbecue masters. This year’s event also features free music from three renowned bluesmen, as well as beers from 31 Colorado microwbreweries during tomorrow’s tasting, which costs $35 in advance. Tomas Green photo.

“We wanted to participate in as many festivals as possible this summer, and we want to hit all the local ones,” said Andy Jessen, co-owner of Bonfire, which will have their three flagship brews on tap tomorrow. “It’s important to be part of the beer culture in the valley.” Unlike the outdoor portion in Beaver Creek Village -- which runs

the entire weekend and features free music from three blues groups, as well as flavors from local and national barbecue masters -- the microbrew tasting takes place indoors at the Gerald Ford Center and, unfortunately for some, is ticketed. But the $35 pre-sale price (available until 5 p.m. today) is well [See BBB, page 24]

SPORTS

River season beginning Locals of all levels offered chances to practice By John O’Neill Mountaineer Contributor Typically around this time of year the weather is warm and rivers are raging, but this year is the exception. The river gods are granting an extended opportunity to learn or perfect river sports. Local outdoor shop Alpine Quest Sports in Edwards has officially kicked off their river instruction for kayakers and stand-up paddlers for the 2011 season. They welcome anyone looking to hit the river for the first time or those trying to perfect a specific skill or technique. As the colder-than-normal weather keeps the rivers flows at a mellow level, now is a great time to get on the water before the main runoff hits, says Alpine Quest owner Sean Glackin. He added that even when the water gets bigger Alpine Quest will be able to accommodate the higher flows by choosing alternative sections of the river. In terms of kayaking, Alpine

Quest offers a two-day beginner lesson for the never-evers wanting to jump into the new sport and private lessons for advanced boaters. Now, lessons are being run on the lower Eagle River. In addition to lessons, Alpine Quest is two weeks deep in their Tuesday kayak demos at the Vail white water park located underneath the International Bridge in Vail. The demos are free and offered to those with moderate kayaking experience, meaning they have a solid roll and are comfortable being upside down. In addition to free playboating instruction, the Alpine Quest Instructors will have the full 2011 fleet of playboats to try. Moreover, the kayak demos are a great place to hone your skills as the feature can easily be adjusted to suit any taste with its inflatable bladder system. If the chilly waters of Gore Creek isn’t to your liking, onlookers are always welcome as the demo usu-

ally gathers a crowd. Or, perhaps, instead of sitting in the water, you’d rather stand. Stand up paddling, which is essentially surfing down the river, is also being taught by the instructors at Alpine Quest this summer. Stand up paddling or known to many as just SUP has taken off in recent years and is expected to boom this season as a new river sport in which anyone can participate, says Glackin. The SUP lessons are available in packages depending on the size of the group. In addition to offering lessons, Alpine Quest has fully swapped out winter gear for summer gear and is fully stocked with all equipment needed for kayaking, SUP, rafting and climbing. Regardless of your interest and no matter how much it may look like you could still ski down Vail Mountain, the rivers are on the rise and paddling season has arrived.

RUNNING

––---------------------------------

the reddish craters of former blisters. Whether Mueller considers his feet bad or not, he understands his body. Now 46 years old, the transplant from Nuremburg – he still speaks with an accent, pronouncing “ultra as “ool-tra – is several weeks away from his ultimate dream deferred: a 70-day run from Los Angeles to New York, more than 3,200 miles through cities, deserts, and the whole of the American landscape. “Running is part of my life, a sort of meditation, Mueller said during a phone interview earlier in the week. “It’s really difficult to explain the concept of this kind of race, whether to regular people or ultra runners. The mental power behind it can be amazing, and if you’ve never seen that, it’s hard to grasp the energy. On June 19, in Huntington Beach, Calif., Mueller’s definitive meditation begins, hopefully to end 70 days later in New York City’s Central Park. A storied race The untouchable quality of a coast-tocoast run is one reason the race holds a certain charm for Mueller. Since 1928, when sports promoter C.C. Pyle offered $25,000 to the first Depression Era runner to navigate the country, only 245 people have followed suit. Mueller first eyed the challenge in 1986, when he read “Flanagan’s Run, a fictionalized account of the inaugural race by lauded athlete and novelist Tom McNab. Around the same time, he entered his first 100-kilometer race in Europe, simply because the number fascinated him. In more recent history, running led him to other fascinations, most notably his wife, Brandi Resa. The two met at the Leadville 100 in 2006. Resa has taken the reins as Mueller’s manager for the run across America, working with the French organizers to arrange lodging and aide stops for Markus and 14 other runners. Resa is quick to point out the international nature of the race: Mueller is the only participant who lives in America, and certain cross-cultural quirks have proved difficult in two years of planning. “Foreigners aren’t used to simple things like getting pulled over, or even stranger things like tornadoes, Resa said. Racers are committed to a 3.5-mile per hour pace across each stage of the race. Stages range from 40 miles to 58 miles, and some days could last up to 14 hours. In return for Resa’s help, the organiz-

The “what-ifs Unlike some ultra runners, Mueller takes a relative laid-back approach to training. Aside from multi-day races meant to build pure mental stamina, he trains between 8 and 12 hours per week. The Boneyard trail near his home in Eagle is a favorite haunt, and locals often spot him in the morning, wearing his characteristic canvas hat with a neck flap. He often runs alone, a carryover from his time in Europe where the running culture doesn’t involve pacers. Mueller’s training schedule makes sense to him, simply because the body can only be prepared to a certain extent for such a race. “After a couple days, you come up with a hundred excuses to drop out, Mueller said, noting the first three weeks are easily the most torturous. “You have to make sure your body wants to go to New York. You can’t simulate that kind of daily grind at home. As a wife, Resa admits she will worry during the race, but trusts Mueller and his two crew members -- a friend from Washington and another from Germany – to get him to New York. “He certainly couldn’t have prepared more than he has, Resa said. “If his body fails, his body fails. There are so many things that can go wrong, This Sunday, Mueller leaves for Death Valley to train in the heat, which the Colorado mountains have seen little of in recent months. This will be vital for the first 1,600 miles of the race, which traces through tracts of Arizona and New Mexico, often across barren Native American Reservations. While Central Park is still miles and months away, Mueller can’t help but feel mental strain already. “At the end, you will be very mentally exhausted, Mueller said. “There is this thing you have been working toward for so many years, and once it’s finished, there is a big hole left. It’s part of the ultra running experience, to push through the lows. Fans can follow Mueller’s journey online by joining the “Markus runs America group on Facebook or by checking his blog, www.marcusrunsamerica.blogspot.com

Aaron Cook must be a great butterfly keeper because the colorful critters just couldn’t let him go at the butterfly release at the Betty Ford Botanical Gardens in Vail on Wednesday morning. He does the Eagle County Charter Academy proud. Jordan Goldstein reps the old school Stohlquist kayaking gear at the Vail white water park. The full dry suit and fleece is rumored to be from the mid ‘80s and still keeping him dry.

Sally Adams, 75, said neighbors rescued her Sunday after the storm destroyed her house and took her to a friend’s home. Missouri officials had said they believed many of the missing were alive and safe but simply hadn’t been in touch with friends and family, in part because cell phone service has been spotty. The AP found that was the case with at least a dozen of the 232 still unaccounted for yesterday.

‘Unimaginable savagery’

Sixteen years after the bullnecked military commander went on the run, a pale and shrunken Ratko Mladic was hauled into a courtroom yesterday to face charges of genocide in ordering torture, rape and the slaughter of 8,000 Muslim men and boys in the Bosnian town of Srebrenica in 1995. A Serbian government that has changed mightily since Mladic’s alleged atrocities trumpeted his early morning arrest as a victory for a country worthy of EU membership and Western embrace. It banned all public gatherings and raised security levels to prevent ultra-nationalists from making good on pledges to

Gang battles hit west Mexico

A gunbattle between rival drug gangs in western Mexico left 29 bullet-ridden bodies in fake military uniforms heaped across a roadway and inside bullet-riddled vehicles in the Pacific coast state of Nayarit, the army said yesterday. The bodies, all male, were found Wednesday scattered around 14 shot-up pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, two of which had bulletproofing. Television images of the scene near the town of Ruiz showed what appeared to have been a convoy of cartel vehicles that was ambushed or engaged by another column of gunmen on a stretch of rural highway. Military-style boots, bulletproof vests, hand grenades and thousands of rounds of ammunition were found at the scene. Nayarit’s attorney general Oscar Herrera told a radio station that preliminary reports indicated the two gangs involved in the fierce highway battle were the Sinaloa and the Zetas drug cartels. He said one of the two cartels kidnapped a man of the rival gang, which resulted in a car chase and subsequent gunfight.

Google launches trial of tap-to-pay phone system

Google Inc. launched its bid to dominate a world where the smartphone has replaced the wallet as the container for credit cards, coupons and receipts. There has been talk of smart payment systems for years. Google faces the same hurdles that have stifled previous trials. The new Google Wallet will initially work on only one smartphone, the Google Nexus S 4G carried by Sprint Nextel Corp. It will connect only to MasterCard PayPass terminals. There are more than 135,000 of those in U.S. stores and restaurants, but that’s only a small fraction of the total number. Google said yesterday that it’s launching a trial of its payment system in San Francisco and New York in cooperation with MasterCard and Citibank.

US men narrowing the gender gap of old age

New 2010 census figures, released yesterday, show men are reducing women’s population advantage, primarily in the 65-plus age group. It’s a change in the social dynamics of a country in which longevity, widowhood and health care for seniors often have been seen as issues more important to women. “We know in the past because of women’s longer life expectancy, women put more emphasis on health care issues because they lived to an older age and often had to rely on the pensions of their husbands,” said Jen’nan G. Dozens of people were injured, mobile homes were flipped and roofs were torn off houses when tornadoes and thunderstorms hit Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and other states Wednesday evening. Its devastation was likely to add to criticism of the government, already under fire over the unilateral U.S. operation to kill the al-Qaida chief and the mounting bloodshed since. In claiming yesterday’s attack, however, the militant group told The Associated Press that it was not vengeance for bin Laden, but rather revenge for security forces’ killings of a family of five Chechens earlier this month in Baluchistan province.

White House unveiling plans to curb regulations

The White House would eliminate requirements for trapping polluting vapors at gasoline stations and let employers and hospitals file fewer reports as part of a plan announced yesterday to ease regulatory burdens on business. More than four months after President Barack Obama ordered agencies to weed out rules that stifle economic growth, the administration was releasing some details of its proposals. Overall, it was unveiling hundreds of regulatory changes that could save businesses billions of dollars and tens of millions of hours of work, the White House said in a written statement.

Palin to embark on East Coast bus tour

www.vailshotokan.com

Sarah Palin will embark this weekend on a campaign-style bus tour along the East Coast, sending a jolt through the now-sleepy Republican presidential contest and thrusting a telegenic but divisive politician back into the nation’s spotlight. Beginning Sunday, Palin plans to meet with veterans and visit historic sites that her political action committee calls key to the country’s formation, survival and growth. The tour follows reports that Palin has bought a house in Arizona and the disclosure that she’s authorized a feature-length film about her career, which could serve as a campaign centerpiece. She recently said she has “that fire in the belly” for a presidential bid. Limited details of Palin’s “One Nation” tour were released on the website of SarahPAC. The tour is to

start in Washington and move up the East Coast into New England, perhaps even to the first-in-the-nation primary state of New Hampshire.

War-weary lawmakers send message

War-weary Republicans and Democrats yesterday sent the strongest message yet to President Barack Obama to end the war in Afghanistan as the commander- in -chief decides how many U.S. troops to withdraw this summer. A measure requiring an acceler-

ated timetable for pulling out the 100,000 troops from Afghanistan and an exit strategy for the nearly 10-year-old conflict secured 204 votes in the House, falling just short of passage but boosting the hopes of its surprised proponents. Obama will begin drawing down some of the troops in July, with all combat forces due out by 2014. Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) and others fear that the initial reduction will be a token cut of some 5,000, numbers they argue fail to reflect that Osama bin Laden is gone and the United States can’t afford spending $10 billion a month on the war.

SPORTS Nadal advances, Clijsters upset at French Open

After losing two match points in the second set and feeling her confidence fading, Kim Clijsters watched the match slip away yesterday at the French Open. The two-time French Open runner-up, seeded second at this year’s tournament, lost to the 114th-ranked Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands 3-6, 7-5, 6-1. “I started doubting a little bit,” said Clijsters, who played only her second match in two months after shoulder and ankle injuries. “When you start doubting yourself on any surface, but for me definitely on clay, it’s the wrong attitude to have.” Maria Sharapova also struggled, but the seventh-seeded Russian won 11 straight games after trailing 4-1 in the second set and beat 17-year-old Caroline Garcia of France 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. No. 4 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, No. 6 Li Na of China and No. 9 Petra Kvitova also advanced. Five-time champion Rafael Nadal, Australian Open runner-up Andy Murray, two-time French Open finalist Robin Soderling and No. 10 Mardy Fish of the United States reached the third round, but No. 8 Jurgen Melzer of Austria lost

Marlins blank Giants to finish three-game sweep

Florida Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria stood at the center of the visiting clubhouse, holding a Marlins cap in his hand and flashing a smile behind his sunglasses. He was clearly the happiest person at AT&T Park. With the home fans still stunned and grieving over the injury to star catcher Buster Posey, Anibal Sanchez threw a five-hitter for another complete game in San Francisco to lead the Marlins to a 1-0 win yesterday and cap a three-game sweep. “The sweep here against a good team is great, Florida manager Edwin Rodriguez said. “The down side is what happened the other night. Other than that, a good three wins. The injury to Posey hovered over the game well before the start. An MRI exam on Posey showed he fractured a bone his lower left leg and had three torn ligaments on both sides of his left ankle, Giants trainer Dave Groeschner said. That all came from when Scott Cousins crashed into him at the plate, likely ending the catcher’s season. Groeschner said Posey will seek a specialist to perform the surgery.

The Marlins brushed the news aside to finish off the defending World Series champions in style. Sanchez (4-1) struck out eight and walked two for his fifth career complete game and second this season. Logan Morrison’s RBI single in the sixth inning off Ryan Vogelsong scored Chris Coghlan for the only run. Vogelsong (3-1) struck out three and scattered eight hits in eight innings for his first loss in six starts on a difficult day to take the mound.

Overton’s 64 gives him 1-shot lead

Jeff Overton shot a bogey-free 6-under 64 yesterday to take the first-round lead at the Byron Nelson Championship, a stroke better than Ryan Palmer. A year after tying for second at TPC Four Seasons, Overton started his back nine with four birdies in a seven-hole stretch. He had his best score in 15 career rounds at the Nelson, even after his 22-foot birdie attempt on the closing hole lipped out. “It’s nice having confidence because of last year, Overton said. “I knew I played well. I just wanted to keep things rolling. After a par-saving 10-foot par putt at the 220-yard par-3 second hole, Overton had consecutive birdies. “That broke a lot and I thought I missed it, and it actually went in, Overton said. “And next thing, I was able to hit a lot of great shots and strike out early. I never had a chance of making bogey from there. “ Palmer has made the cut only once in his seven previous Nelson appearances. This week, he is letting his caddie call all his shots. Sergio Garcia, who withdrew from a British Open qualifier this week and didn’t even play a practice round because of an infected fingernail on his left hand, was in a group of nine players at 66.

The Baltimore Orioles are back at .500, thanks to a seeing-eye single from a guy better known for his power. Vladimir Guerrero’s hit drove in Robert Andino in the 12th inning, allowing the Orioles to beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 yesterday for their season-high fifth straight victory. Nolan Reimold had four hits, including two homers, and four RBIs for the Orioles, who squandered a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the 11th before coming through an inning later. “It feels real good, Reimold said. “You never know really what to expect for the game. I was happy to have a good game, very happy that we got the win. So I’ll just enjoy it. At 24-24, the Orioles are at .500 for the first time since they were 13-13 on May 1, and their hot streak coincides with Reimold’s return. Since being recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on May 20, Reimold is 6-for-11 with three home runs. —These stories, unless otherwise cited, appear courtesy The Associated Press

Nadal trailed 5-1 in the third set but forced the tiebreaker. “Probably, I am playing a little bit nervous, Nadal said. “And that’s why (my) legs didn’t work as well as usual. Nadal will face Antonio Veic of Croatia, who eliminated No. 28 Nikolay Davydenko 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.

worth it, Jensen said. Along with a custom 16-ounce mason jar for drinks, entry includes 20-minute seminars with three local brewmasters and unlimited access to over 100 Colorado flavors, some of which are brewed solely for the event. “A lot of them have fun with it and bring stuff you wouldn’t taste otherwise, Jensen said. “Someone like New Belgium won’t bring Fat Tire -- they’ll have something unexpected. Marquee names like New Belgium, and unfamiliar breweries are regular crowd pleasures. Although official ticket sales haven’t yet been tallied, Jensen expects over 600 people to attend the paid portion. As for the indoor venue, Jensen said it is largely a precaution. Given the valley’s finicky weather this spring, the move is likely smart: weekend forecasts from the National Weather Service call for possible rain and thunderstorms. “If it’s kind of gloomy, the tasting is a great place to go and wait out the weather, Jensen said. “People just love the event and the beer.

Joining local favorites like Moe’s and Kirby Cosmo’s will be outfits culled from the barbecue mecca of Oklahoma, including Okies Smokin’ the Rockies and Smokin’ Foods. The tunes are also a trans-national affair. Beginning at noon each day, three artists -- Seth Walker, Eric Lindell, and Tommy Thomas and the Working Man’s Band -- will rotate through the stage. Each plays a two-hour set, ranging from Walker’s soulful guitar playing to Lindell’s stripped-down, roots-style crooning.
