Wilderness bill returns By Matt Minich Mountaineer Editor

Representative Jared Polis (D-Colo.) will take another crack at making 166,000 acres of Eagle and Summit County nationally protected wilderness. The Boulder lawmaker announced yesterday he plans to reintroduce the Eagle and Summit County Wilderness Preservation Act. Polis introduced the bill – which has its roots in the Hidden Gems wilderness campaign – late last year, but it failed to make it the House

floor before the end of the legislative session. Reintroducing it now will give the bill more time to make its way through the legislative process, Polis said in an interview yesterday. Where it only had months before, it will now have until December of 2012 to come to a vote.

THE UPDATE US missiles kill 25 people in Pakistan

The bill will first be heard by the House Natural Resources Committee. If it moves from that committee, Polis said he hopes to attach it to an omnibus land bill including wilderness proposals in several states. Excluding some “technical changes,” Polis said, the bill is the same as the one

he introduced last year.

A consensus Ever since it came under the banner of Hidden Gems, the idea of expanding wilderness is Eagle County has been polarizing. Polis said yesterday that the legislation as proposed – which is similar but not identical to the Hidden Gems proposal – has been endorsed by land management bodies in both counties, including the county governments. U.S. missiles killed 25 people in an al-Qaida and Taliban sanctuary close to the Afghan border yesterday, Pakistani officials said, signaling American intent to press ahead with such attacks despite renewed protests by Islamabad.

Bloodiest day of Syria uprising

Syrian security forces fired bullets and tear gas yesterday at tens of thousands of protesters across the country, killing at least 75 people in the bloodiest day of the month long uprising and signaling that the authoritarian regime was prepared to turn more ruthless to put down the revolt against President Bashar Assad. The death toll was likely to rise, raising fears that there will be an explosion of violence today as relatives bury their dead in funerals that in the past have turned into new protests.

More world class training available in the Vail Valley Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Carlos Carvahlo isn’t teaching ski racing By Brian Alexander Mountaineer Staff Writer When most people hear of the Vail Valley and world-class athletic training, they automatically assume it’s something alpine related. But not this time. Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Carlos Carvahlo is the head instructor of the Brazilian jiu-jitsu program at Inyodo Martial Arts and coach/trainer for the Vail Fight team, and you can get worldclass training with him all week long. And unlike skiing, you can do it year round. Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is the premier ground-fighting martial art and is a patient art form where an inch is often the difference between success and failure. There is a heavy emphasis on positional strategy in BJJ. Positions are stable situations from which a large variety of techniques/submissions are available. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a fundamental art form that can be compared to a game of chess with the use of the entire body. Originally from Brazil, Carvahlo has been in the Valley for the last eight years, single handily introducing jiu-jitsu to the area and continuing to practice. He is now in his 18th year. Introduced to the art at a young age under BJJ legend Jorge Patino, better known as Macaco – who has a direct lineage to the famous Gracie family – Carlos moved to the United States in 2000 and eventually earned his black belt from a well-known instructor, Brazilian Arthur Ruff. “It takes a student about 12 years of training to achieve a black belt from me, Carvahlo said. “It’s all about the process and how much mat time one puts in. It’s that kind of dedication that has Carvahlo’s small jiu-jitsu team competing against the best and biggest gyms in the world and coming out on top. They recently returned from the Pan Am Games in Irvine, Calif, where two of the Vail Fight Team’s five members finished on the podium with 40 year-old Kevin Aoki taking home the championship in the 125-pound blue belt division. Meanwhile, 16 year-old Drew Verratti – a Vail Mountain School sophomore – took second place in the 190 pound blue belt division. The rest of the team that competed lost in very close matches by only a few points, but were never submitted, and that included Paul Surridge, Isaac Magdaleno and Rob Verratti – Drew’s

dad. “It’s great experience to see what you are made of, 43 year-old Rob Verratti said. “Half the battle at this event is having the courage to train and step on the mat. The event saw more than 2,000 competitors from around the world compete in different divisions and age classes. “Any one of my students can compete with anyone in the world in their belt classification, Carvahlo said. “We’re competing against gyms that have 100 to 200 students and we’re beating them, Carvahlo said. “It shows how good our program is and to be training at 7,000 feet of elevation is. The altitude of the Valley is something unique to training with Carvahlo, as the elevation offers other practitioners and mixed martial artists (MMA) a chance to train with one of the best in the world while reaping all the benefits the mountain air provides. “We are the highest elevation training facility for BJJ in the world, and we are going to become the same for MMA, Carvahlo said is their next goal, which he is currently working on. “That’s our next step, putting in a full training center in the Valley that attracts fight camps from all around the world. They train full MMA right now, but are looking to upgrade the equipment and get their MMA structure better. One of Carvahlo’s most notorious pupils is current UFC fighter Donald “Cowboy Cerrone, who makes his way to Inyodo a few weeks before his fights to go over his ground game and ground strategy for the upcoming opponent. Carvahlo has trained jiu-jitsu with some of the biggest names in mixed martial arts and the UFC, including the Nogueira brothers, Junior dos Santos and Demian Maia, to name just a few. Right now, Carlos has 24 active students and an additional eight kids he trains at the two Inyodo Martial Arts facilities, located in Eagle and Edwards. Training seven days per week between the two locations, Carvahlo has created a warm environment where anyone and everyone is invited. “We are more like a family here, more than any other martial art, said Carvahlo. “We roll with each other every day, sweat on each other. Rob Verratti has three boys who do [See FIGHT, page 20]

Traer Creek loses lawsuits against Avon By Phil Lindeman Mountaineer Staff Writer At least one round of the ongoing legal pummeling between Avon and Traer Creek ended this week, and the town came out on top. In two separate decisions, both District Court Judge Thomas Moorhead and the Colorado Supreme Court ruled in favor of the town, striking down civil cases that stretch back to 2008. Earlier in the week, Moorhead found the town council made no error in 2007 when they refused to hear proposals for a spat of condominiums at the site. Traer Creek first sued Avon in May 2008, arguing the town changed several ordinances specifically to block the condo developments. Rather than amend the proposals, Traer Creek pulled them shortly before filing the lawsuit. Yesterday, the Colorado Supreme

Court denied an appeal by Traer Creek LLC, the company’s development branch, to overturn a “vested right” decision made last July. The decision said the town council had a right to reevaluate any plans made by the company, even if they met the original building requirements. In a statement released yesterday, Avon’s attorney Eric Heil said, “the town is pleased with the final decision of the Colorado Supreme Court,” but noted “there are a multitude of outstanding disputes which may likely take a number of years before a final decision is reached.” A legal representative for Traer Creek, Musey Ayers, declined to comment on either decision. Currently home to Wal-Mart and Home Depot, Traer Creek sits on a 1,700-acre plot of land northeast of Avon known as “The Village,” bought by Swedish shipping magnate Magnus Lindholm in 1992 for $12 million.

In many ways, the original lawsuit by Traer Creek sparked a series of legal battle that have been chewing through paper – and town funds – for nearly three years, leaving in its wake more than 200 separate legal filings. In March and April alone, both sides produced 54 documents. The second lawsuit, filed by Avon, asks for more than $3 million in maintenance fees and lost sales taxes after Wal-Mart moved in 2002 from a location inside the town. The feud has also taken a toll on Avon’s general fund. From 2007 to 2009, the final year actual budget numbers are available, attorney fees for the town jumped from $194,000 to over $380,000 – over half of the entire legislative payroll. Earlier this month, Moorhead stuck with his decision to try the case in November, saying further delays would harm the community.

SSCV athlete Abby Ghent takes a turn at this year’s Surefoot Colorado Ski Cup. SSCV announced yesterday that the club won the overall title. SSCV photo.

Following a season of competing against the best skiers in the Rocky Mountain Division (RMD) of USSA, Ski & Snowboard Club Vail came away with the Surefoot Colorado Ski Cup title, with SSCV claiming the top spot for the women for the second time in two years. “This title shows strength and depth for the RMD region,” said SSCV’s alpine program director Dan Stripp. “I am very happy our women have won this title for two years in a row.” Erika Ghent, an SSCV alumna and CU skier, took first place overall for the women’s Surefoot tour while SSCV’s

Paula Moltzan finished the season in second and Kaytlyn Samuelson took third. Anne Strong and her sister Elizabeth finished sixth and 15th, respectively. “Our women had strength and depth this season,” said Stripp. “I am very proud of how they skied this year. We will be losing a few of our talented skiers next year, but I will be looking for our younger skiers to step up and ski strong next season.” For SSCV’s men, Sean McCormick and Cannon O’Brien finished 12th and 14th, respectively, in the overall standings on the Surefoot tour.

This fun maximization philosophy is the unifying force behind the Smalltown’s genre-warping club sets, which tend to cover vast musical territory but never veer from the good times vibe. WILDERNESS

––––––----------------------------------------

“We think we’ve reached a consensus about it, he said. Much of the land included in the bill is already managed as wilderness, he said, but has not been given the official designation. Under a wilderness designation, lands are subject to some of the most restrictive regulations implemented on public lands in the United States. No mechanized activity is allowed in wilderness. This includes not just cars, ATVs, and chainsaws, but mountain bikes as well. Diane Johnson, a spokeswoman for the Eagle River Water and Sanitation District, said the ERWSD is generally in support of new wilderness designations, but has some reservations about the legislation. Pristine wilderness creates highquality water, Johnson said, but ERWSD officials fear that not all areas included in the legislation qualify as “pristine. Areas that are laced with old jeep or logging roads, for example, can be repaired faster by crews using motorized equipment than by the slow reclamation of nature.

Celebrity endorsed Polis’ announcement was timed on Earth Day, and came with words of supports from celebrities and public figures from across the state. Vail Town Council Kerry Donnovan was among the group supporting the legislation at yesterday’s ceremony. “My family has a strong history with wilderness, Donovan added. “From my grandfather shaping and defining wilderness boundaries because of his beliefs in the power of meeting nature on its own terms, to my parents introducing sustainability and recycling – it is this legacy that inspires me to be a part of this legislation. To add these proposed parcels to the existing Wilderness completes a project started a life time ago. Colorado landscape photographer John Fielder, who has spent decades photographing Colorado wilderness, praised the bill as a conservation measure. “Only 5 percent of Colorado’s 66 million acres is legally designated wilderness, said Fielder. “It’s sim-

ply not enough for a state whose economy is so dependent upon the integrity of its ecology. Wilderness protection makes people healthy, wealthy, and happy from an economy that is sustained by clean air and water, parks and trails, cobalt blue skies, and wilderness. Aron Ralston, a Denver native who achieved fame after he cut his arm off with a pocket knife in Utah, also came out in support of the legislation. “I’ve adventured in more than three-quarters of the lands included in Congressman Polis’ bill over the past six years, Ralston said. “Their beauty, wildlife, and opportunities for quiet recreation and solitude surpass much of our state’s existing wilderness. It is time to preserve our last. pristine places in Eagle and Summit County. Polis suggested parties interested in commenting on the legislation direct their comments to his Frisco office, which can be reached at (970)409.7304.

fall in love with such future reggae anthems as “Lively Up Yourself.â€? Stephen Marley is no stranger to the world of music, having begun his career in music at the tender age of six. Since that time, he has honed his sound, which dances the line between genres, collaborating with his family members. With the release of his debut album “Mind Control,â€? Marley garnered much attention and success as a solo artist and his concert in Vail Village is sure to be a good time for guests of all ages. Appropriately, “Mind Controlâ€? is all Stephen and a cornucopia of the sounds and styles that he loves: a blend of reggae, rock, R&B, nyabinghi rhythms, flamenco and hip-hop. It’s an album with the grit and flavor to rock old-school Kingston sound systems and slippery, waxed Miami Range Rovers alike. The venue will open at 6 p.m., and DJ Logic will get the music going at 6:30 p.m in the Vail Village in front of Solaris. The schedule of Spring Back to Vail entertainment today is also set to include après and after dark parties in Vail Village as well as the Spring Back to Vail Expo Village and Men’s Journal Lounge at the base of the Vista Bahn Express Lift. The Spring Back to Vail Expo and the Men’s Journal Lounge will be at the base of the Vista Bahn Express Lift today from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. At the expo village, guests will find product demos and samples from many of Spring Back

to Vail’s sponsors, like Maui Jim, Smart Wool and Rockstar. The Men’s Journal Lounge, joined by Merrel, will be a place where guests can relax before or after hitting the slopes or even catch a game of foosball. Also in the Men’s Journal Lounge, guests can enter to win a VIP package for the World Pond Skimming Championships, which includes two passes for the VIP viewing area at Pond Skimming, two VIP Spring Back to Vail swag bags, a gift from Merrell and more. Visit the Men’s Journal Lounge for more details. The Ore House will host tonight’s après party from 4-5:30 p.m., where guests will find plenty of beer specials and giveaways. Following the free concert in Vail Village, The George will host the after dark party from 10 p.m. to midnight where guests can find even more drink specials and free Spring Back to Vail giveaways. Spring Back to Vail is the annual festival in Vail to celebrate the conclusion of the winter season, which includes a full schedule of free headliner concerts, nightly parties, the legendary World Pond Skimming Championships presented by Rockstar and more. McCain visits Benghazi

U.S. Sen John McCain, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the United States and other nations should recognize the opposition’s political leadership as the “legitimate voice of the Libyan people.” McCain called for increased military support for Libya’s rebels while in Benghazi yesterday, including weapons, training and stepped-up airstrikes, in a full-throated endorsement of the opposition in its fight to oust Moammar Gadhafi. The White House disagreed, saying it was for the Libyan people to decide who their leaders are.

Also, National Air Traffic Controllers Association President Paul Rinaldi called on the FAA to allow controllers to sleep on breaks during daytime shifts, and to take scheduled naps of as long as two hours during overnight shifts. Rinaldi also endorsed 10 other recommendations for combating fatigue offered by a working group of agency and union officials.

Iowa activists not sold on Trump

Donald Trump says he would em-

brace the rigors of campaigning in Iowa if he decides to run for president, but Iowa Republican leaders say they doubt the celebrity businessman really knows what it takes to compete in the state’s presidential caucuses and wonder if he would commit the time and effort needed. “I don’t think he’s prepared at all for what it means to run in the caucuses in Iowa,” said Sac County Republican Chairwoman Ann Trimble-Ray. “I think that’s going to shock the socks off this guy.” “I will meet many, many people, maybe all of the people” in Iowa, Trump told The Des Moines Register last month. “If I decide to run, I will be shaking hands with everybody.”

Throughout history, military gear has been made with the male physique in mind. But for women in today’s combat or close-to-combat jobs, that can mean body armor that fits so poorly it’s tough to fire a weapon, combat uniforms with knee pads that hit around mid-shin and flight suits that make it nearly impossible to urinate while in a plane. A committee on women’s issues has recommended that flight suits be redesigned for both men and women so it’s unnecessary to disrobe before urinating. And engineers have been looking at ways to design armor that better fits the contours of a woman’s body.

Gulf mess renews debate about drilling

A year after the disastrous Gulf oil spill, the prospect of a major accident in oil’s next frontier — the icy waters off Alaska’s north coast — has experts even more concerned. With no roads connecting remote coastal towns, storms and fog that can ground aircraft, no deepwater ports for ships and the nearest Coast Guard station about 1,000 miles away — it would be nearly impossible to respond on the scale that was needed last year to stop the runaway oil well and clean up the mess. In a recent analysis requested by a federal court, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement simulated a hypothetical blowout in the Chukchi Sea. The calculation estimated that a blowout there could release as much 2.6 million gallons a day, a disaster of Macondo-sized proportions.

THE UPDATE this week by taking off the belly bundle. Only a handful of people knew that 17-year-old Gaby Rodriguez wasn’t really pregnant. She had been nervous about how the crowd might react. After all, she had been lying to them since October. Rodriguez — who has a gradepoint average of 3.8 — came up with the idea during her sophomore year Advanced Placement biology class. Before the revelation, she asked several students and teachers to read quotes people said about her during the course of her experiment. “Her attitude is changing, and it might be because of the baby or she was always this annoying and I never realized it,” her best friend, Saida Cortes, read.

Fugitive gets 48 years for Colo. shootout

An inmate who escaped from an Arizona prison and was caught after a shootout with police in Colorado has been sentenced to 48 years in prison for firing at an officer. The Daily Sentinel in Grand Junction reports that Daniel Renwick was also sentenced yesterday to another 12 years for firing at other officers Aug. 1 in Rifle. The 37-year-old Renwick pleaded guilty in March to two counts of first-degree attempted murder. Officer William Van Teylingen said Renwick fired several bullets at his car. The officer rammed Renwick’s SUV before the fugitive sur-

rendered. Renwick is one of three convicts who escaped in July from a prison in Kingman, Ariz. He was serving a sentence for second-degree murder.

Quake briefly cut US military computer links

The Air Force says computer links with some U.S. bases in the Pacific were severed by the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on March 11, but one of its cyber squadrons restored them within five hours. The Air Force said Thursday that bases in Japan, Korea and Guam were affected. It wasn’t immediately clear what the consequences were. The 561st Network Operations Squadron in Hawaii coordinated the repairs. The squadron is part of a unit at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado. The Air Force says the Hawaii squadron also canceled planned interruptions for maintenance on Pacific computer networks so they would remain open.

Pieces of ancient Chinese painting reunited

Two pieces of a torn 660-year-old Chinese painting held by Taiwan and mainland China will be reunited for the first time in centuries at an exhibit at Taiwan’s national museum, in a sign of warming ties between the rivals. The main portion of “Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains” by revered Chinese landscape painter Huang Gongwang has been stored in Taipei’s Palace Museum since 1949, when the two sides separated during a civil war. The other part of the 20-foot-long painting will be shipped from China’s Zhejiang Provincial Museum for an exhibition opening June 2. The Yuan Dynasty painting was torn more than 300 years ago by a private collector who tried to burn it as he was dying, but a relative saved it from the flames. The two parts have been kept in separate places since then. —Update stories, unless otherwise cited, appear courtesy The Associated Press

ATHLETIC STUFF for his second career no-hitter after throwing one Marlins’ Sanchez beats ing Sept. 6, 2006, against the Arizona Diamondbacks during his rookie season in just his 13th start. Sanchez reRockies quired shoulder surgery the following year and slowly

Anibal Sanchez held the Colorado Rockies hitless yesterday night until Dexter Fowler led off the ninth inning with a broken-bat single. Sanchez then got the final three outs for a one-hitter and the Marlins won 4-1. The toll from throwing 123 pitches showed on Sanchez. The Florida Marlins right-hander wore one big bag of ice on his right shoulder, another on his right arm and yet another on his right thigh as he settled into a chair with a grimace. Trying to throw a no-hitter is hard. Sanchez (1-1) had a career-high nine strikeouts and allowed one unearned run. He threw a no-hitter for Florida in 2006 and shook off the disappointment of falling just shy of another. “It was awesome to have the opportunity to almost throw again a no-hitter, Sanchez said. “I’m excited. The hit came on Sanchez’s 116th pitch, and the first of the ninth. Fowler pulled a single to right field past second baseman Omar Infante, ending the no-hit bid. “To see it go on a broken bat is kind of disheartening, Marlins catcher John Buck said, “but it shows how hard it is to do. It’s just the way it rolls. Fowler was doubled off first on a lineout by Jonathan Herrera. Carlos Gonzalez grounded out to end the game. Gaby Sanchez and Chris Coghlan homered for the Marlins, who won their fourth straight. Rockies starter Jhoulys Chacin (3-1) allowed four runs in five innings. Sanchez walked three, including Fowler to lead off the game. He was unfazed when a two-out fielding error by first baseman Gaby Sanchez allowed Fowler to score. “Anibal has a very strong mental approach, manager Edwin Rodriguez said. “After that first inning, it takes mental toughness to keep his composure, and he did a great job. A 27-year-old Venezuelan, Sanchez came into the game 0-1 with a 5.51 ERA in three starts. Morris played a year in the NFL before an injuryending career and played Tarzan in a movie. He died in 1974. At CSU, Morris was an all-conference athlete in football and competed in as many as five track and field events. regained his form. After Colorado took the early lead, Coghlan led off the first with his second home run of the season. The Marlins made it 3-1 on a run-scoring sacrifice bunt by Anibal Sanchez and an RBI groundout by Coghlan. Gaby Sanchez’s home run stretched the Marlins’ lead to 4-1. Meanwhile, Anibal Sanchez was cruising along with a mix of curves, sliders, changeups and cutters to go along with his mid-90s fastball. “Everything was working, he said. “I’m throwing harder than last year. In the third, he benefited from an inning-ending double play. He struck out the side in the sixth. With one out in the seventh, Troy Tulowitzki hit a hard grounder off Sanchez’s right leg and the ball bounced toward first base. Sanchez scrambled to the ball and beat Tulowitzki to the bag for the out.

Florida Marlins’ Anibal Sanchez delivers a pitch during the first inning of a baseball game against the Colorado Rockies in Miami yesterday. Pierce, Allen lead Celtics to 3-0 lead over Knicks

No fantastic finish needed for the Boston Celtics this time. They simply spoiled Madison Square Garden’s postseason homecoming party right from the start. Paul Pierce scored 38 points, Ray Allen added 32, and Rajon Rondo had a Celtics’ playoff-record 20 assists as Boston beat the New York Knicks 113-96 yesterday night to take a 3-0 in their first-round playoff series. Rondo had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Celtics, who pulled out two close games in Boston but never trailed in this one, dominating the first playoff game at Madison Square Garden in seven years. They will go for the sweep Sunday afternoon, and no NBA team has ever lost a series after winning the first three games. Boston coach Doc Rivers said he rarely talks to his team about the crowd environment, but the former Knicks player made an exception Friday knowing the stage.

“My main concern is this was not entertainment coming in here today. This was a competition and I thought we came with that mentality,” Rivers said. After winning the two games in Boston despite trailing in the final half-minute of both, the Celtics scored the first nine points of this one and never really let it get much closer. “You can’t give them that big an opening that they can smell blood,” Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni said. Carmelo Anthony had 15 points and 11 rebounds but shot 4 for 16 for the Knicks, who were booed as they walked off the court trailing by 23 points after three quarters. Exactly 10 years to the day since their last home playoff victory, the Knicks were outclassed in the same way they have been so many times in their forgettable decade since. With Chauncey Billups sidelined again with a knee injury, Amare Stoudemire limited by his back spasms and Anthony unable to duplicate his 42-point performance from Game 2, the Knicks lacked the firepower to match the defending Eastern Conference champions.
