No hero should have to go hungry Mountaineer Staff Report The Vail Mountain School 5th grade class has been working with lower school Spanish teacher Kelly Tissier to collect nutrition and power bars for soldiers in the Middle East. To date, the class has raised 730 bars. 650 bars were sent to U.S. Army Special Forces A-Team, who is training in Wyoming and headed to the Middle East next month. The soldiers were very grateful, sending a photo back to the school and writing that they sometimes spend 20 hours/day on the range and out in the field with only the bars to get them through breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The 5th grade’s relationship with the soldiers began on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the school’s Volunteerism Day, when the students “adopted” soldiers and wrote them letters of thanks and good wishes. In many of the letters, the children asked how they could help. The soldiers wrote back, and said that what they really needed was quick, nutritious food supplies in the field. The class started the “No Hero Should Go Hungry” campaign, and the rest of the school—students and teachers/staff alike—have been donating bars since. The deadline for final collection is Wednesday, May 27. If members of the larger Eagle County community would like to donate bars to this cause, they can drop bars off at the school with attention to Kelly Tissier.
