1492–1493 Christopher Columbus departs on his first voy-

age from the port of Palos in southern Spain on August 3, 1492. Hoping to reach Asia, Columbus lands on the islands of Cuba, Hispaniola, San Salvador, and Guadeloupe. Arrives back in Palos on March 15, 1493.
