Head of School Search Update A message from Search Committee Head, Dr. Terrence Flannery I would like to thank all who participated in our initial public meetings to discuss our search for the next Head of School at Doane Stuart. Our search consultants, Jane Armstrong and Bill Lyons, of Independent Thinking (IT), met with Upper School students, Middle School students, our Board of Trustees, Search Committee, and virtually all of our faculty, staff and administrators. They also conducted two open parent meetings. As we discussed in the April meetings, we used the information we gathered to develop an Opportunity Statement that will be used to recruit candidates. The Opportunity Statement has been approved by the Board of Trustees and I am now pleased to make it available for all to see on our website. The Board and Search Committee are very interested in your thoughts about our search. To help us with this, our search consultants created a short survey which you can complete on the internet. The survey asks for your thoughts about Doane Stuart’s strengths, the challenges facing it, and the qualities that you think are most important in a Head of School. The survey is anonymous and can be found at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DoaneStuart In addition, we invite you to share comments with us at any time throughout the search process by emailing IT at it@independent-thinking.com or by contacting me. I can be reached by email at tflannery@doanestuart.org. P ENNANT L A Y O UT A ND D E S I G N B Y E L IZA B E T H G R A Y SO N

“Doane Stuart lives and flourishes today because of you and because of a mission that is a temp late for creating meaningf ul lives in a challenging and changing world.” Dear Friends, First, and most important, thank you. Thank you to all whose generous donations are acknowledged in the report of gifts, pages 3 – 9, and to all who support Doane Stuart. This is a time to take great pride in Doane Stuart. Take pride and celebrate our long and colorful history, our spirited present, and the people – students, teachers, parents, friends – YOU – who have passed through our doors and made their marks on our enduring and evolving school. Doane Stuart lives and flourishes today because of you and because of a mission that is a template for creating meaningful lives in a challenging and changing world.

conflict to reconciliation – to work TOGETHER within the context of all of the exciting, joyous and complex realities of life. This is how we have succeeded.

TAKE PRIDE IN STUART DOANE Began design phase of

However, as fundamentally important as they are, hugs and kind invitations can’t answer all of the challenges that independent schools face today; school dragons come in all shapes and sizes. For a small school like Doane Stuart, those dragons most often come to us in the guise of financial challenges. Along with our strong and growing enrollment, 14 years of operation in the black, and a proven ability to make the most of our tuition dollars, we need your help to continue to build excellence – excellence in curriculum, faculty, technology, athletics, interfaith and international programs. . . in all of the programs and accomplishments that you see highlighted on this page.

$1.3 million Green Roof project • Class of 2013 earned extraordinary $4+ million in college merit scholarships • Track team broke 8 records in 2013 • College essay by Ana Castro ’13, featured in the New York Times • Anti-Defamation League recognized Doane Stuart as “No Place For Hate” School • Jacob Shipley ’13, National Merit Scholarship winner • Mock Trial Team continued its success, placing second in Rensselaer County finals • Doane Stuart now listed on NYS and National Registers of Historic Buildings • Maintained commitment to providing financial aid to students from every quarter • As a group, Doane Stuart students performed over 6,000 hours of community service last year • Middle School swept regional Joseph Henry Science Fair; won first place in grade 4 – 6 division and grade 7 – 8 division; won second place in grade 7 – 8 division • Excellence in Science Night with Dr. John Delano of NASA and UAlbany • Tennis star Lars Olson ’15, captured Section ll Tennis championship, advancing to State Championship. • Mission-driven expansion of interfaith international exchange programs with Lagan College, St. Mary’s University College, and Stranmillis University College in Belfast, and David Yellin College in Jerusalem • Welcomed first group of Chinese students through Cambridge Institute

In this issue of The Pennant, you will see pictures of our students and faculty at work and play. These pictures offer only a small glimpse of Doane Stuart life, but they embody everything that makes us fiercely determined to safeguard Doane Stuart’s present and future. St. George fought his dragon alone. We can’t do it alone; we can do it together. We need the active, enthusiastic and generous support of Doane Stuart’s powerful community of believers, which has accomplished so much over the years

St. George and the Dragon - Raphael 1504-1506

We all know the story of St. George and the dragon, the tale of a lone knight who slays a ferocious beast – challenge and change at their most elemental. Over many years, the Doane Stuart community has conquered its own share of dragons. Of course, being Doane Stuart, we conquered with determination, faith and kindness, giving those dragons (figurative) big hugs and inviting them (politely) to join our community: to appreciate and accept differences with us; to meet challenges and opportunities with us; to explore, discover and learn with us; to serve others; to see beyond

• to preserve a mission that has inspired generations, and • to continue to build a school that honors its past and looks with energy and clear vision toward the future. You will hear the voices, in these pages, of some of those who believe most passionately in Doane Stuart. We invite and encourage you to join them and all of us in working and giving together. Thank you.

With gratitude and all best wishes,

Lisa Brown Interim Head of School 1

PS There are many ways to help. I would love to talk with you about ways in which we can work together. Just call me at (518) 248-2077 (cell), (518) 465-5222 ext. 227, or send an email (lbrown@doanestuart.org) any time. I look forward to talking with you.

s you know, on Thursday, November 29, 2012 we had the great pleasure of announcing the naming of our Chapel as

The Golub Interfaith Chapel. This announcement was significant, not just because of the major gift from the Golub family, but because of the important message that was behind this dedication.

The Chapel is

dedicated to the School’s values of Faith, Tolerance, and Respect. As Neil Golub said “The Chapel is a place of respect for all people and we celebrate it as a place where we can learn to appreciate our difference.” We would like to offer you the opportunity of supporting our efforts to teach our students to understand and care about the needs of others, and to respond to those needs with our actions. The Chapel is the center of our school, physically, and is the central symbol of our interfaith spiritual identity. Our students, whether they are entering for Chapel, celebrations, Morning Meetings, or to hear guest speakers, are encouraged to understand, to be inspired to serve, to respect difference, and to honor the faiths of others.

e support Doane Stuart because the school provides a supportive, nurturing, spiritual environment where students can experience the joy and excitement of intellectual discovery and learning in a totally diverse student body. This is excellent preparation for them to achieve success in today's highly competitive, technological, diverse society. We like the fact that students are taught critical thinking, the value of volunteering to help the less fortunate, and that they are truly encouraged and helped by a loving faculty to develop to their full potential. Doane Stuart has demonstrated its commitment to student inclusion and diversity by raising funds annually that are used for the sole purpose of providing tuition support and scholarships. At Doane Stuart they live diversity! Doane Stuart graduates are the model of intellectual honesty, integrity and character. We are proud of the students and our Doane Stuart Family!

Learning at Doane Stuart expands beyond the classroom, especially during the annual Upper School Humanities Project, an interdisciplinary study about a single engaging topic. Students teamed with faculty members in small groups to immerse themselves in this year’s topic, an in-depth look at natural disasters. During the break from traditional classroom coursework, students engaged in labs to learn about how storms develop, how to clean up an oil spill, and how to provide clean drinking water after a disaster. The project culminated with a trip to Schoharie, where students and faculty assisted with the ongoing clean-up of damage from Hurricane Irene.

oane Stuart teachers do more than simply impart knowledge. They engage their students in the learning process. They motivate them to produce their very best work. They foster a learning environment that is sufficiently safe and secure so that students try new things and aren’t afraid to risk failure. And finally, they demonstrate, in word and deed, that they are fully committed to their students’ success. Because of Doane Stuart’s commitment to serious study and instilling a life-long love of learning, we give. Because of Doane Stuart’s commitment to diversity and promotion of respect and appreciation for difference, we give. Because of Doane Stuart’s commitment to supporting us, as parents, in the raising of really good people, we give. Because of Doane Stuart’s commitment to educate to social responsibility, we give. Because of Doane Stuart’s commitment to reinforcing the value of faith, we give. Because we support the demonstrated, living/ breathing mission of Doane Stuart, and so that the School will exist for students long after our kids have moved on, we give. - Tom Lagan and Dr. Ginna Roeding (Emily ’11 and Robbie ’14)
