President’s Message by Bob Winfree

2012 Shows The Shows are On! The AKWS will hold our Juried, All Members, and Signature art shows in 2012 thanks to eleven AKWS members who have volunteered to make it happen, including (in alphabetical order): John Beebee, Libby Hatton, Mary Hyry, Karen Matson, Mark McDermott, Marcia Nathanson, Beth Taylor, Donna Tracy, Bob Winfree, Sandy Winfree, and Sue Zajac. Show chairs (Juried, Bob Winfree), All Members (Sue Brush Strokes

Zajac and John Beebee), and Signature (Beth Taylor and Karen Mattson) will be working over the coming months to confirm suitable venues and coordinate many other tasks needed for a quality show. There’s a lot to do, but many hands make for smaller tasks. Want to help? Please do? There’s still things where more hands could help (such as hanging the paintings and returning art to the artists), so feel free to talk to chairs to see what they need. Also, warm up your paintbrushes and start painting. Our public wants to see lots of fresh art for each show, and we all know what that takes! More details about times, place, etc. in future issues of Brush Strokes.

again next year, perhaps with an indoor First Friday gallery show for the month before installation, and in conjunction with other Alaska artists’ groups. It would not substitute for our other shows, but could be another opportunity for some creative fun.

Nominations

The Board is still seeking nominations for officers. Although most of the positions on the AKWS Board are filled by volunteer program chairs and coordinators, the AKWS cannot function as a nonprofit society without elected officers. Serving as an AKWS officer is your best opportunity to influence the future direction of the AKWS, add to your artist’s resume, and get to know a lot of good people. We will be Our Poles are Cold show ends holding elections for President, Vice President, Treasurer, in March. Please carefully remove your art from your pole Recording Secretary, and Corresponding Secretary over the weekend of March during our May members’ 17-18 or shortly after. Bob Winfree would be interested to meeting. hear from AKWS members as to Continued on page 2 whether they’d like to do this

Opportunities March 15 Deadline. Open Call for Alaskan Artists: Trophic Cascades. The Alaska-based artists/scientists consortium In a Time of Change (ITOC), in collaboration with Denali National Park & Preserve (PP), the Murie Science and Learning Center and Bonanza Creek Long Term Ecological Research Program (BNZ LTER) is producing a creative project in 2012-13 that focuses on the dynamics of predator / prey interactions, entitled In a Time of Change: Trophic Cascades. Applications are being accepted from artists of all disciplines and media, including performing artists, visual artists, writers, composers, new media artists, documentary filmmakers and others. Selected artists will participate in a 3day field workshop in Denali National PP (July 25-27, 2012) and day trips to BNZ LTER near Fairbanks (date TBA). These experiences will provide 2-way interaction with scientists who are experts in predator / prey interactions and trophic cascades* in Alaska. In addition to the workshops and day trips, artists will have the opportunity for long-term interaction with scientists via ongoing dialogues, exchanges of ideas, and feedback. Unique opportunity. Information provided by Tim Rains, NPS-Denali. Full details at: http://165.83.62.205/documents/2012/ApplicationsITOC.pdf

"Photoshop Basics for Artists" Thursday, April 5, 2012, 6:00 - 9:00 PM BP Energy Center, 900 E. Benson Blvd., Anchorage Free of Charge for AKWS & SAQA members: Size Limited to First 10 Reservations By Mark McDermott & Cat Larrea This workshop is for artists in any media and at any level, from novice to professional, who would like to learn or enhance their ability to manipulate and compose digital images using Photoshop Elements as an exciting part of their workflow. Practiced use of Photoshop Elements can accelerate visualization and can become a key step in the process of transforming your images to art in any media, regardless of whether your style is realistic, abstract, or somewhere in between. Cat & Mark will share some of their basic creative workflows including outdoor photography, image adjustments and modification in Photoshop Elements, and finally translation of images to various artistic methods such as drawing, painting, and working with fabric. Giving participants a variety of tips and tricks of using Photoshop to simplify, improve, and design a piece of art is a central goal of this workshop. A laptop with Photoshop Elements is beneficial, but not required. Contact Mark McDermott at markmcde@gci.net or 345-6997
