PoPP E-zine: June 2013 The Latest News from the Department of Politics and Public Policy RESEARCH, CONSULTANCY & EXPERTISE ESRC project launch – open invitation Centre for Comparative Housing Research (CCHR) / Chartered Institute of Housing East Midlands Annual Seminar This takes place on Tuesday afternoon 2 July from 2.00 to 4.00pm in the Hugh Aston Building. The focus is on ‘Boosting Affordable Housing Supply: Can We Do It? Yes We Can!’. The keynote speakers are Dr Tim Brown and Professor Michael Oxley from CCHR and Darinka Czischke, Director of the Building & Social Housing Foundation. The event marks the launch of the Centre’s Economic & Social Research Council knowledge exchange project with Places for People on ‘Boosting the Supply of Affordable Rented Housing in the UK – Learning from Other Countries’. There was a brief explanation of the role of lobbyists as well. Also in this interview, there was a brief discussion of Ed Balls’ proposals to means test the winter fuel allowance.

Conferences, Workshops & Events Philip Davies presided over the annual Board meeting of the European Association for American Studies in Moscow (25 to 28 April 2013). Whilst he was there he took part in a panel filmed in the TV studios of the Russian State University of the Humanities, on the future of American Studies. Tim Brown participated in the Leicestershire County Council-led seminar on ageing well on Wednesday 8 May 2013. Philip Davies attended the annual meeting and conference of the American Studies Network, in Alcala, Spain, 17 to 19 May 2013. Clodagh Harrington organised a one-day conference on The State of the Union: Challenges and Expectations for the Obama Administration (24 May 2013). The event was hosted at the Eccles Centre for American Studies at the British Library and included participation by a number of eminent scholars who examined the progress of the Obama adminstration to date, and the challenges to be managed going forward. Clodagh will edit the resulting publication, which will contain chapters from each of the speakers, including contributions from Clodagh and Philip Davies. It will be published by ISA in 2014. Michael Oxley is chairing The Westminster Briefing entitled Improving Private Rented Sector Provision: Increasing Supply, Safeguards & Reliability on 24 July 2013 in London.
