CENTER OF WELLNESS
MEDICAL OPPORTUNITIES Whether you’re sick and trying to get well, or well and trying to stay there, Indianola has sprouted a number of medical services dedicated to providing new medical resources both to residents of the community, and those around Indianola. The newest service to come to town is 3D mammography, now being offered at Mercy Specialty Clinic in Indianola. In addition to 3D mammography, ultrasound is also available. The new services are just the latest in what is becoming a hub of medical services north of Indianola being offered for people concerned about wellness, and illness. Thanks to the Indianola Specialty Clinic, which opened in 2014, patients who need to be seen for problems with their ears, followup care for heart problems or just to have blood drawn for tests, can now do so without driving to Des Moines. “With the success of the new medical hub developing in Indianola, it became pretty apparent there was a need for additional services,” said Justin Brown, part of Downing Construction, which developed the area. “Just to have those services available is going to be good for other businesses and for the quality of life in Indianola.” The center of the hub is of course, the YMCA. Opened in 2013, the Indianola Y now serves more than 2,300 households. And the Y is more than just the geographic center of the medical hub. It’s a center for programs as well, said Scott Krutoff, executive

director of the YMCA. “We are now in a time where people are realizing they have to be proactive in taking ownership of their own health,” he said. “Taking action to be healthier used to be a ‘want’ but is becoming more and more of a necessity.” Krutoff said that more health care providers are recommending that patients attend specific wellness programs they think would benefit them. In turn, facilities like the Y are growing the range of their services. “We have had to shift our focus from serving mostly healthy people looking for a gym membership to figuring out how to serve people across a wider spectrum of health,” he said. While the Y is located in the midst of the new medical services, it’s far from the only wellness center in town, Krutoff pointed out. “There is such a wide variety of abilities and goals for where people want to take their own wellness that there is a market for an equally wide variety of wellness facilities,” he said. “As long as people are seeking and finding a way to be healthier — it’s good for them and ultimately leads to a healthier and stronger community.”
Just as people have a wider range of options for programs to help them be well, they also have a wider range of providers to choose from in getting well when sick, or staying healthy every day. Several providers also are seeing the benefits of new or expanding practices in the community. The Iowa Clinic opened in 2014, giving clients three more providers to choose from. It moved into offices that had housed the Indianola Family Medicine Clinic, now located on Hillcrest Road just north of Indianola. The new medical services are a boon both to the people who live in Indianola, but also to its economic growth, said Brenda Easter, director of the Indianola Chamber of Commerce. “Not only does our community, but individuals from surrounding areas, now have easy access to top-notch physicians, facilities and special services,” she said. “Local businesses benefit when our residents and those from other communities can receive the medical care they need, right here in Indianola.” When people do get sick, they can get the services they need in a much more convenient location. For Bob Lane of Indianola, the new facilities allowed him to have physical therapy in Indianola, rather than driving to Des Moines. “This was a tremendous benefit to me and allowed me to not miss as much work as I would have if I had to commute to Des Moines three times a week.” said Lane.
THIS WAS A TREMENDOUS BENEFIT TO ME AND ALLOWED ME TO NOT MISS AS MUCH WORK AS I WOULD HAVE IF I HAD TO COMMUTE TO DES MOINES THREE TIMES A WEEK.

LOCAL PARKS
Indianola parks are lovely, leafy retreats for community residents. But Pickard Park, along with the Indianola Little League fields, is much more. It’s an economic driver for the community. This year, Pickard will host tournaments of one kind or another on 32 out of 52 weeks. More than 80,000 people will attend events at the field, paying tournament fees, buying snacks and pumping close to $200,000 into the Indianola Parks and Recreation budget, said Doug Bylund, director of Indianola Parks and Recreation. “It’s huge. It’s incredible,” said Bylund. “But, obviously it costs a lot of money to keep that going.” The money brought in at Pickard helps pay for grass seed, field maintenance and equipment to keep fields ready for play — many expenses that the fields would incur anyway. The weekend influx of USSSA baseball and

softball tournaments also keep close to 40 staff members hopping, prepping fields for play and managing concession stands and other activities, said Bylund. “That gives an impact and gets pushed back into the community,” he said. “It’s high school and college kids, and I have no idea how many umpires are out there in a weekend.” But the Parks and Rec program isn’t the only group to benefit. Larry McConnell, owner of Gib’s All-American A&W restaurant, said he sees the impact when tournaments come to town. “It’s very very good for the community,” said McConnell. “It’s out of town money that wouldn’t normally come here. The restaurants and convenience stores would be the major benefactors, and the grocery stores.” But local organizations also benefit, McConnell pointed out, as the added revenue allows him to give back to the community by sponsoring sports teams and activities. Bylund agreed, saying that while tournament organizers want people to eat at the concession stands at the field, he finds many sponsors for the fields among the businesses that benefit from tournament traffic.

EVENTS
Whether it’s enjoying the sunshine and watching a hot air balloon float in the sky, hearing the rev of engines at bike night or feeling your heart soar with the sounds of the Des Moines Metro Opera, there is plenty to do in Indianola. Many events get their start on the Indianola Square, which hosts everything from the holiday, homecoming and Memorial Day parades to local car shows, health fairs and open air markets. The Square “is a great destination for Indianola events,” said Sara Opie of Indianola. “It’s a wonderful place to gather for concerts, parades and activities.” Kathy Magruder says she enjoys seeing parades march by her windows at Pageturners Bookstore on the southeast side of The Square. But The Square isn’t the only home for fun events in Indianola. Des Moines Metro Opera spectators are at Simpson College. Youth sports events cluster near the high school and middle school athletic facilities on the east side of Indianola. And the National Balloon Classic makes its home just outside of Indianola, although the balloons that give it its name brighten the sky throughout the town when they fly. On the west side of town, the Warren County Fair draws spectators and participants from around the county, and in the rural areas of the community, wineries host dinners, bands and other events throughout the year. There’s more than one reason to host events, said Brenda Easter, director of the Indianola Chamber of Commerce. One is economic, although she admits it can be hard to measure the economic impact of events. “When people come into town, they’re spending money here,” she said. “Whether they spend money at the balloon field or the grocery stores, they’re buying things. The truth is, there will always be economic gain from hosting these events.” But the other reason is simple, she said. “We host events for people to enjoy,” she said. “We want people in our backyard to enjoy the events and provide economic gain for the community as well.”

INDIANOLA IS
It will take a year to build out the fiber system. Beta testing could begin by March of 2018. Magellan estimated the average home could get 1 gigabyte of internet for $70 or 1 gigabyte of internet and phone for $95 a month. That’s if 40 percent of residents switch to IMU. Hollifield said that shouldn’t be a hard number to reach since there are only two other utility providers in Indianola — Mediacom and CenturyLink.
CONNECTED
As Indianola Municipal Utilities heads into 2017, it’s working with NewComTech to complete the design and engineering work on an expansion of Indianola’s fiber optic network.
The utility spent the better part of 2016 debating whether it should install the network and connect the entire city to fast and affordable internet service. A faster internet connection is necessary to keep up with today’s modern workplaces, Kyle Hollifield of Magellan Advisors told IMU in July, but it also comes with a hefty price tag. About $16.6 million. IMU hired Magellan to conduct a feasibility study to determine whether building a fiber network would be worth it for the city. Hollifield presented the final study to the board and said the city should consider building a fiber network simply because there isn’t really another way to provide faster broadband services. “Until we find something faster than the speed of light this is going to be what sends data,” Hollifield said. “That’s 2.7 terabytes.” Additionally, fiber is symmetrical, which means you have the same speed going up as you do going down. If you don’t have fiber, that’s not true.
IMU has already set some groundwork for the fiber project. It began laying fiber cables in 1997 to connect all of Indianola’s school buildings, county buildings and Simpson College. Those are also known as the city’s anchor tenants. Businesses that were located along the existing fiber route were allowed to tap into it beginning in 2006. More recently, IMU took on a $40,000 project to expand fiber in a 13-block radius near Howard Street. The utility only gained about 150 potential customers in a city of about 15,000. Former IMU director Todd Kielkopf said before he resigned the fiber network is something that would make Indianola stand out from the Des Moines metro area. “This is how we’re going to compete with other communities over time,” Kielkopf said. “And I think we’ve seen that with the Des Moines Metro making the top-10 lists. It’s because of what we’re doing in the metro.”

AMAZING THINGS
and the Indianola Community School District has students who are driving big things in the district. High School Senior Chris Brandt and other student ambassadors have led a “Red, White, and You” campaign to install a 25’X50’ American flag on a 70’ pole at Indianola Stadium. The new flag was installed and raised before the 2016 home football opener against Norwalk. The students are challenging future senior classes and students at other schools to take on patriotic or difference-making projects as well. The high school also is featuring new organizations, including an Interact Club associated with the local Rotary Club. The work of the students is reflecting the spirit of a school that Newsweek named one of America’s Top High Schools for 2016. Only 500 schools that are doing a “stellar” job of preparing students for college were included on the list. Even better, Indianola High School also was named one of the Top Schools that are beating the odds in college prep for students who are in a more challenging economic environment. And while the students and the academics are excelling, so are the facilities. While work approved in a 2013, $29 million bond issue, has all been completed, several additional projects have been done with money from SAVE, the statewide one-cent sales tax. The district has renovated the high school baseball field, added 10 new tennis courts north of the high school, renovated the high school special education suite and added new HVAC for the high school auditorium and new chillers at Irving Elementary.

SIMPSON & INDIANOLA
A Successful Partnership
Back in 1879, Indianola saved Simpson College. The effort set up a relationship that endures to this day. In June of 1879, the college was nearly bankrupt. At baccalaureate, the college president announced that “those of you present here today are sitting at the bedside of a dying Simpson.” The college needed $1,500 to survive. Slowly, one citizen after another stepped up. Gifts from $100 to $5 poured in, and by the end of the service, the college was saved. Enrollment at the time was 159. There were six faculty members. Today, a lot of things about the college have changed, but not the relationship between the college and the community, said president Jay Simmons. “Indianola is an ideal college town,” he said. More than 1,400 full-time students attend classes on Simpson’s main campus. Students choose among 80 undergraduate majors and minors taught by 250 full-time faculty and staff. Students can participate in prestigious programs like the Culver Public Policy Center, which offers four-year scholarships to students who demonstrate a commitment to public service, and brings in people like political consultant David Axelrod, former Senator Alan Simpson and political columnist Mark Shields, to speak to students, faculty and interested community members. Simpson also is home to the Iowa History Center, the Simpson Urban Studies Program and recently received a National Foundation
Grant to fund scholarships for students studying STEM related topics. But for everything the college offers students, it also provides a place for community members to enjoy concerts, theater and music performances, lectures and sporting events. “Simpson offers a wide array of artistic, academic and athletic programs that are open to all the members of our community,” said Simmons. Simpson is one of the things that makes Indianola special, said Art Sathoff, superintendent of schools. “There is a special energy that comes with a commitment to higher education, and collegiate athletics are exciting for everyone,” he said. The Simpson Storm participate at the NCAA Division III level at the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. This year, its rugby team finished in the top four in the nation. The college has won almost 90 IACC championships, two Division III National Championships and has produced more than 250 All-Americans and nearly 50 Academic All-Americans. Each year, hundreds of youngsters flood the campus for football, basketball and volleyball camps and tournaments, bringing with them a surge of energy and excitement, along with families and fans who in turn flood local businesses. “Simpson hosts many large events throughout the year, generating a significant economic impact for our community,” said Brenda Easter, executive director of the Indianola Chamber of Commerce. “These guests shop, eat and use many of our services while they are here. Our local businesses and entire community benefit when visitors from all over the country are here.”

Superheroes only centimeters tall ran amok in cars, planes and futuristic vehicles in the city of Gothamopolis (a take on Batman’s fictional home of Gotham), which was built out of Legos in the basement of Indianola City Hall recently. Arowen Garcia, 7, was one of the architects for the city. She built a store that sold jewels, apples, dynamite, shovels and a boat. All are necessities for a good superhero. Her favorite hero, Garcia said, is Wonder Woman, because she does cool tricks. And if she had a superhero logo, it would be a lightning strike because that would be her super power. But the week-long kids camp wasn’t all about super powers. It was also about learning. The program was designed to get kids thinking about engineering. Garcia said she learned to share, not to build on other people’s projects without asking first, and how to build more detailed designs. “I guess I don’t know if it’s what you learned or what you built,” said Conor Cassady, 9, about the experience. “I guess I’d rather

tell what I built.” He said he built a robot and a garage with a car to go inside. Cassady said he enjoyed the different themed days, which included Superman, Batman and the Avengers. His favorite superhero, he said, is Iron Man because of all of his suits and his sense of humor. Matt Winjum, 9, discovered during the camp that making a 3D model of Captain America can be boring. “It was just red and yellow so I added a bunch of colors to it,” he said. Winjum said he also built a miniature house, a spaceship, Thor’s Hammer, a sling shot, Spiderman’s web, and a tower that was taller than him and his friends. His favorite part, he said, was building the collective projects included in the city of Gothamopolis. Winjum said he learned “building is more than constructing. It’s fun, too,” he said. Paula Gray-Dietz, an owner and director of Bricks 4 Kidz, said the goal of the camp is to teach kids the basics of engineering, such as gear rotation and building. “Overall, these kids are learning but they don’t know they’re learning because they’re having so much fun,” Dietz said. She said Bricks 4 Kidz also offers a variety of programs throughout the metro during the school year.

THE SQUARE businesses line the highways and surrounding areas. Businesses, no matter where they are located, are vital to the health of the community, said Easter. “The businesses are the backbone to every community,” said Easter. “They are committed to providing more than goods and services, they also support the community in every way.” Local businesses are the ones who sponsor events in town, support youth athletic teams and step up with donations for events in the community. “They do more than have shops around town, they support the entire community,” said Easter. And she emphasized that the support has to flow two ways. “It’s really important that our community, the people who live and raise families here, support our businesses to help make them successful.” Easter says it’s hard to determine whether businesses or people come to a community first. Businesses choose to be here, she pointed out. “The way I look at it, you don’t have a community without the businesses and you don’t have a community without the people,” she said. “You have to have them both.”

SQUARE
Indianola’s Square is a special place to residents, said Jay Simmons, president of Simpson College. “It not only represents the center of our town, but the soul of our community,” said Simmons. “Everything from bike nights and bluegrass festivals to great shops and dining is available in the center of Indianola.” The Warren County Courthouse stakes out the center of the Square, with green spaces for community gatherings around it, a Square of traffic that bisects the community, and then local businesses that cater to the needs of the people who live and visit. “The Indianola downtown square is quaint,” said Brenda Easter, head of the Indianola Chamber. “We have locally-owned bakeries, gift and floral shops, a women’s wear boutique and a bookstore.” “Who wouldn’t want to be on The Square?” asked Kathy Magruder, owner of Pageturners book store on The Square. “I like to be part of the community and I think you can’t get more part of the community than The Square. And besides, I get parades going past my windows.” While The Square is the heart of the community, arteries spill from it to the rest of the community, with businesses stretching along the main streets from The Square and along highways 92 and 65/69, which crisscross the town and house many area businesses. The arteries off The Square are home to locally-owned chiropractic offices, dance studios and insurance and investment firms. Along the highways, gas stations and convenience stores are prevalent, as are services like lawn care, plumbers and tasty treats like ice cream, sandwiches and frozen yogurt. pera is about more than people standing on stage and singing, says executive director Michael Egel. And Des Moines Metro Opera carries that message far beyond its home in Indianola, or even its wider audience in Iowa. That was part of the plan when Dr. Robert Larsen and Douglas Duncan launched the company back in 1973, 45 years ago. “They very smartly realized that in order to be successful they were going to have to create a company that would appeal to people not just in a certain vicinity of the theatre, but have a national profile as well,” Egel explained. Larsen and Duncan laid the foundation for that company, Egel has been building on that foundation since he became executive director in 2010. Over the years Des Moines Metro Opera has grown from a small company performing three operas in an annual temporary home at Simpson College with many local performers, to a company with a national and international reputation that draws both its audiences and artists from across the country to perform as many as five shows per season on its mainstage at Simpson and across the Des Moines Metro area. But even as it has grown, said Egel, Indianola has been key to the success of the company. “Our situation in Indianola is one of the most enviable situations in the opera world,” he said. Each season the company brings in close to 200 singers, orchestra members and crew members to build sets, hang lights and create the on-stage world the company inhabits. “Just housing all those people becomes so much less of a burden when you’re in a community the size of Indianola.” Indianola provides mostly big city artists and artisans who are used to working with a small community that is easy to walk. “We operate in a tight little eco-system,” said Egel. “All those people can be relatively self-sufficient as they go about their work for eight weeks in the summer.” Opera audiences also enjoy the small-town atmosphere, said Egel. “It works really well for people to come attend a summer stock performance in a place that’s intrinsic to what the state really is. “These people are so used to big metropolitan cities and big opera houses, but when they come to Iowa to see a weekend of performances, it adds to the appeal of the visit to see what Iowa really is.” Audience members come to Iowa from 36 to 38 states each season, as well as a variety of foreign countries. And while they are charmed by the small town environment, they also come

seeking an ever more adventurous opera environment offered up by Des Moines Metro Opera. In addition to its three main stage shows, its educational touring arm, OPERA Iowa, has carried music into classrooms and communities around the state and nation for more than 30 years. More recently, the company has launched a 2nd Stages Series that puts modern operas in unique settings that help communicate the message of the show, such as performing ‘Galileo’ at the Des Moines Science Center this season, and planning performances of “Little Soldier Song” at Camp Dodge over the winter. The company also holds a variety of events tied to opera throughout the year, holding unique lectures, screening films at the Fleur Cinema with an opera connection, and more. “The more we can draw connections between our performance sand a variety of other disciplines, the greater connections you can make,” said Egel. “It’s about community engagement, rather than operating in an isolated box where we say ‘come down on July 15 at 7:30 p.m. and see a show and then go home and forget it when you’re done’ I want to make sure we make connections with people.” Those events help connect people to the art, he explained, and they offer new entry points for people who may not be sure that opera is their thing. “I think people respond to experiences where there is depth beneath the surface,” he said. “You can go to your first baseball game and chances are you’ll have a nice experience and you’ll like it and you might want to go to multiple games. “And if you choose to get into it, there’s a whole lot of stuff you can follow,” he continued. “You can follow players and you can follow statistics.” Opera, he said, is much the same. Each year, the company must strike a balance between the needs of those who are “opera novices” and those who are “aficionados” or opera veterans. “Is there enough for both crowds to sell the tickets and raise the funds to keep going?” he said. “So far, we’ve done very well at that.” So well that the company will mark 45 years of entertaining audiences in 2017. While the company plans a major announcement to mark the anniversary year, the primary celebration will be where it always is — on stage. “I certainly think the pieces we are doing next year are occasion kinds of pieces,” he said. “’Turandot’ is the biggest of the big, ‘A Little Night Music’ with a production by Isaac Mizrahi is an occasion and ‘Billy Budd’ is the province of the biggest opera companies that is now something that we’ve brought a new version to the world that we can undertake. “There’s lots of reasons to celebrate.”

incentives. Indianola Mayor Kelly Shaw told the council then if they didn’t support the forgivable loan agreement for the money, it would result in a setback for the development of Summercrest Hills and Indianola in general. “As you know, this project has been on the drawing board for some time and I view it as an important springboard for other development in the city,” Shaw said. Wendel said he’s still looking for a restaurant to move in next door to the hotel. The hotel isn’t the only big building going in on the north side of town. Time Walpole, of the Three-Sixty Group, announced a 160-room senior living facility, a new Casey’s General Store and a Hardee’s restaurant are also being built in Summercrest Hills. Another project, which was announced at the end of 2015, is a 116-unit multi-family complex, worth approximately $12 million. City officials previously estimated the projects are expected to have a taxable value worth more than $11 million and the city will see an estimated return of $1.1 million over a five-year period, even with abatements and rollbacks. Outside of Summercrest Hills, Indianola residents can look forward to a Taco Bell and a new Mexican restaurant, which should both be open by the end of 2016.
Indianola officials announced what’s perhaps one of the city’s longest awaited developments in town. In conjunction with the Three-Sixty Group and Sand Company, the city unveiled the plans and started building a 46,000 squarefoot, 71-room four-story hotel in Summercrest Hills, near the YMCA on the north side of town. Twelve investors from seven states helped make the project happen and local subcontractors are currently working on construction. Vanderpool was the first subcontractor on site. Michael Wendel, project developer with Sand Companies, said during the hotel’s groundbreaking in June his first visit to Indianola to begin investigating the possibility of building a hotel was on May 17, 2013. “I could tell you that about an hour after I got to Indianola I knew I was going to be building here. That’s a testament to how I was received by city staff,” Wendel said. “I think there’s great opportunity here.” Mayor Kelly Shaw said the hotel highlights Sand Company’s faith in Indianola as a growing community. Late in 2015, the city debated whether to give the hotel project $250,000 worth of

DMACC
Des Moines Area Community College’s new $15 million facility built inside Southridge Mall has now been open to students for three years. Opened in 2013, the site hosted more than 240 students from Warren County during its maiden year. The facility, equipped with more than $2.5 million of automotive, welding and other equipment became home for students interested in studying vocational programming. Students participating in the welding program last fall finished two college-level classes and earned four college credits. They get a head-start as they move into future careers as they complete safety training courses, communication skills, applied math, blueprint reading, oxyacetylene fuel welding, shielded metal arc welding and gas metal arc welding. The students are also trained to do overhead welding and vertical up welding. “That will give them enough of a skill set to attain an entry-level position,” said
instructor Dennis Piotraschke. If students begin the welding program as high school juniors, they can finish a list of courses and earn a welding diploma during their senior years. Students then can finish their associate’s degree in one year at the DMACC Ankeny campus. The welding bay at the Southridge facility is one of the largest in the Midwest with 32 welding stations. DMACC’s Southridge facility is also home to a three-door garage and some high-tech equipment. Students learn to use tools such as OBD2 Scanners and Tech 2 Scanners that can detect nearly anything that could be wrong with a car. The Southridge location offers two automotive classes, automotive technology and automotive collision. In addition to being a useful tool for Warren County students seeking higher education, the facility also took some pressure off DMACC’s other growing campuses. “DMACC has grown 110 percent over the last 10 years as the need for skilled workers has continued to grow” said DMACC president Rob Denson said. He said DMACC provided services to more than 12,000 high school students last year who accumulated more than 90,000 credits.
