The 2012-13 season produced the Frazee wrestling team’s 10th trip to the Class 1A state finals, coming up just short to Jackson County Central for championship honors. But don’t fret for the Hornets, too much, as Frazee is primed for yet another run, with their first six wrestlers returning. It will be quite a start for the Hornets, who will have six quality wrestlers to start off matches, which will lead into a bit more inexperience in the latter weights, but with good potential of having a nice lead as a cushion. “We’re hoping to get the other team in a big hole, with our experienced (lighter) weights,” said Frazee head coach John Barlund. “We have some good talent in our lower weights who did well on the JV last year, but we’re just a little inexperienced there.” But teams will have to deal with an onslaught of bonus points headed by Frazee’s first six wrestlers, which included freshman Tanner Reetz (113), sophomore Grant Jepson (120), junior Byron Byer (113), sophomore Ethan Byer (113), junior Austin Skillings (126) and senior Hunter Sorenson (138).
The majority of those half dozen Hornets have individual state experience and which is key to Frazee’s No. 2 Class 1A state ranking according to The Guillotine, behind No. 1 JCC. “We do have a good kid at every weight, though,” Barlund said. “We have kids who are good at pinning their opponents, with the two Byer kids very good with their pinning moves.” The Hornets have a total of six wrestlers ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes.
They include Reetz (sixth, 113), Byron Byer (sixth, 120), Jepson (10th, 126), Skillings (fifth, 138), Kody VanDenEykel (seventh, 182) and Garrett Malstrom (sixth, 285). In a change to the conference tournament, the Heart O’Lakes and MidState will combine as one conference tournament, which will be held in Staples Jan. 24-25, as an individual bracket format.
