Being more physical is also a goal for the defense. “Last year, we were not physical enough and with many new players, we’ll need to be a team defense and gang tackle,” the LP-A coach added. Mason Swegarden and Olson will hold down the secondary at cornerback and safety. Overall, many players who saw plenty of time on the junior varsity, will now have to transition that to the next level. “The hope is, while we are trying to build a consistent program, is when those players who played junior varsity can translate that experience to the varsity level,” Jed Swegarden said. “Our expectations are always high, but we will need to get better in a hurry. “We are lucky the thick of our schedule is towards the end of the year, so hopefully we are much better by then.” The Raiders will open their new field the second week of the season, when Pillager comes to town Friday, Sept. 6. “We’re excited about the new field and think people will enjoy it,” Swegarden added.
