It is likely that the use of robots in the classroom will help students to explore diverse career paths. Moreover, robotics is a perfect way to show students that engineering and IT can be fun by making abstract knowledge concrete.

E

ducational utilisation of robotics has seen a considerable worldwide growth in last few years. In line with this, several attempts have been made to introduce robotics in school education from kindergarten to high secondary school (K-12) in subjects other than science, mathematics and technology. It is likely that the use of robots in the classroom will help students to explore diverse career paths. Moreover, robotics is a perfect way to show students that engineering and IT can be fun by making abstract knowledge concrete. Working with robots enhances creative problem solving techniques. These machines also help in improving basic communication and interpersonal skills, ability to collaborate, and convey complex ideas to a fellow students or colleagues.

What is a robot? Robots can be defined as programmable machines or gadgets that can be used in place of humans to perform a range of tasks by executing input commands. As the world looks forward to a fullfledged Artificial Intelligence (AI), it is expected that the robots will soon have more advanced features. For example: Alexa, a voice bot by Amazon, has already made headlines with its ability to learn new skills through its sound interface. Humanoids like Hanson Robotic’s Sofia are another pointer to how the world is moving quickly into a future of robots. In fact, the pilot tests that have been carried out on a number of modern creations reinforce the message that robotic capabilities will closely resemble to those of humans.

cover story

It is important to note that innovation in school education should not be limited to introduction and access to a new technology. Education innovation is a broad term that includes appropriate educational philosophy, curriculum and learning environment among others. These factors are important for any educational innovation to become successful. Similarly, introduction of robots should be considered as introduction of new tool. It is the teaching-learning/pedagogical practices that will determine the learning impact coming from robotic applications.

How far has the development of robotics come? Modern robotics began in the early 1950s, when George C Devol created a robot called “Unimate”. The machine was programmable, a concept that still applies to modern techniques. Joseph Engleberger, a businessman and engineer, bought Unimate in the 1960s and began mass production of robots. To date, Joseph Engleberger is referred to as the father of the modern robotics industry. Today, advanced robotics continues to surprise those of us who couldn’t have fathomed the existence of AI bots like Sofia, Siri, Alexa, Cortana, and Google Assistant. But thanks to tech giants like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Apple, and others that continue to set the pace, this sector is something to marvel at.

Early developments of robotics in Academia Academia has been at the centre of robotics worldwide for many years now. In 1958, researcher Charles Rosen led the Stanford

Research Institute in developing Shakey – An industrial-scale robot with more advanced features. For example, it could move around a room, perceive its surroundings, and even respond to them to some extent. Today, robots like Milo and ASK NAO are continuing to bring the world into a future of artificial intelligence. It is observed that the use of robotics has simplified complicated medical procedures, made dangerous construction projects safer and exploration of our universe possible. On similar lines, application of robotics and simulators to education can change the way students learn that ultimately will lead towards knowledge-based society.

Robotics in Education allows students to learn STEM disciplines in different ways and facilitate students’ skills and attitudes for analysis and operation of robots. Educational robotics strengthens and supports students’ skills developing their knowledge through the creation, design, assembly, and operation of robots. Robotics in the classroom helps children and young students with particular requirements to develop their own personal learning experience, accessing information and educational contents

through a tailor-made path. Robots in school education can also represent a helpful solution for those students who cannot attend school. Robots can be used to bring students into the classroom that otherwise might not be able to attend.

Higher Education Many careers require specialised knowledge in delicate practices, specifically in the realm of healthcare. When receiving a medical education, many students find benefits in the use of robotics. When learning to perform complicated medical procedures, a human subject isn’t feasible, so educators are employing the use of robots as stand-ins. Robots can be created and programmed to give off all indications of human life, including breath and heartbeat. Their use can also be seen in such procedures as injections, surgeries and even delivering children.

Special Education Students with special requirements are reaching new levels of learning through the use of robotics in the classroom. With these technologies children with autism are learning communication and social skills and students with developmental issues and attention disorders are learning focus. Individuals with

severe physical disabilities are also offered a constant companion and health monitoring system - all through the use of robotics. Robots can be programmed to suit each individual child’s need, offering special education in a much simpler, accessible format.

Why Teach Robotics in Educational Institutes?

Creative thinking Not many fields of knowledge incorporate creativity and fun simultaneously. Studies have shown that robotics achieves both. In fact, students love to partake in activities in which they have full control, something that is possible with robotics. And when learners are able to do cool stuff, they want to develop more features.

Hands-on learning activities enhance concentration and attention levels, because the more students learn physical skills, the more they want to continue being in the lesson.

Preparedness With advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), driverless cars, and spacecrafts taking shape every day, the present generation of students need to be more prepared for technological changes than everbefore.

Programming skills As artificial intelligence becomes more prevalent in homes, schools, and offices, a little programming knowledge will help everyone understand how these bots work.

Perseverance

cover story

Robotics is gaining momentum in many educational institutes across the world. It’s important to note here that teachers who administer courses in this area should advanced knowledge in programming and other skills as it will help students reaping huge benefits, not just for the present, but also for the foreseeable future. Here are seven areas in which learning about robotics or through at educational institutes can benefit students.

Robotics incorporates a range of skills, and thus promotes a learning environment for people with different talents. If properly harnessed, it also promotes a culture of teamwork.

Engagement

Creating and programming bots is challenging. However, working through frustration helps students develop a never-give-up attitude. It imparts determination, which is crucial for any technological or scientific undertaking.

Teamwork Robotics incorporates a range of skills, and thus promotes a learning environment for people with different talents. If properly harnessed, it also promotes a culture of teamwork. It can even be used to help students who might struggle to learn in traditional classroom settings – for example, the ASK NAO robot was developed to help autistic students, and its main goal is to bring everyone on board through modern educational-technology approaches in academia.

Fun Learning about robotics is fun and as designs continue to improve how, it will only become more so! Robots have already made their mark in education and will continue to do so. However, how useful or potentially harmful robots can be to education will depend more on how educators and students choose to use them than on the technology itself. Educators must embrace the latest skills and knowledge for effective teaching. That’s why they should embrace robotics, which is breaking new ground in learning methodologies around the world.

Policymaker’s Perspective 12

‘Why India Needs a New Education Policy?’

W

hy India needs a new education policy? As history is replete with examples of a broken education system and if we wish to achieve sustainable development, we need to transform the education system,” said Dr Rajendra Pratap Gupta, Member, National Education Policy Committee, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. He was speaking at the World Education Summit organised in November 2017 in Dubai. The Summit was organised in partnership with the Knowledge and Human Development Agency (KHDA), Dubai. It brought together top decision-makers from Government and public sector for exchange of ideas on best practices, trends, challenges and growth opportunity in education ecosystem. Describing about the importance of education in a nation’s development, Dr Gupta said, “Some of the policymakers believe that education and health are the areas where we will focus on only after the country becomes developed. It is not like that. If the public is neither healthy nor educated, it is very difficult to imagine development of any country. Economic growth without improvement in education and health cannot facilitate development.” Citing the examples of Singapore and Medellin — a city in Colombia, Dr Gupta stated that the one of the major reasons behind the 180 degree transformation of the aforesaid places is the good quality education. Explaining about the growing demand of technology across the world, Dr Gupta stated, “Digitisation and Automation will drastically change the education and employment scenario.” In this context, he also referred a study by McKinsey Global Institute that suggests that in coming future few occupations will be fully automated whereas the 60% of all the occupations across the world have a chance of 30% automation. Describing about the flaws of the education system, Dr Gupta referred Charles Darwin and Gregor Johann Mendel who used to be sailor and priest respectively. He said, “If the two eminent scientists have to follow the education system of bachelors’ degree and ahead, they will never be to achieve that they had.” “We need to understand the importance of technology and also need to leverage the same through our education policy so that we can generate more job opportunities for our students,” he added. Our first National Education Policy (NEP) was launched in

1968. 18 years later, we implemented the second education policy which got revised in 1992. 25 years later to that we are taking about drafting a new education policy. Describing about the changes that have been witnessed and that India as a country needs to focus on, he said, “Since the last National Education Policy, India has liberalised its economy, India’s population has witnessed a massive growth of 65%, there is a paradigm shift in every sector globally, Signing of the Washington Accord, and most India needs to add one million jobs every month. These all are the factors that need to be focused on in the National Education Policy (NEP).” As the New Education Policy of India is likely to be implemented in few months, Dr Gupta’s above speech was quite a bit relevant in today’s scenario. There are only speculations about the various norms that may or may not be the part of the education policy. The education policy must include three very important aspects: Incorporating processes to be in sync with the global trends, effective skill training to boost employability and effective implementation of technology to improve teachinglearning processes. The draft NEP was submitted to the new HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank on May 31, following which it was made public for feedback and suggestion.

POLICYMAKER’S PERSPECTIVE

‘OUR MAIN FOCUS IS TO IMPROVE QUALITY OF EDUCATION’ Starting from June 2019, a massive campaign will be launched to increase class attendance in schools, as in each class quality of education depends on the knowledge from the previous class. This will be a non-financial intervention that would be taken up by involving parents, NGOs, media, self-help groups (SHGs), says Dr B Janardhan Reddy, Secretary, School and Higher Education Department, Government of Telangana, in an interview with Sudheer Goutham B of Elets News Network (ENN). What are your plans to improve quality of education in the state? I fully concur with Indian economist Amartya Sen’s observation that physical absence of students in government schools is rampant due to poverty, ill-health and festivals among other reasons. Physical absenteeism leads to mental absenteeism which results in poor quality of education. As per a study by an annual certification agency, ACER, in the government schools of India, a Class 10 student has knowledge equivalent to a student of 5th standard and a Class 5 student has the knowledge standards of a Class 1 student. Even an international agency’s (PROBE) study in Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh as also in other countries, the same results were found to be true. In their ranking on quality of education, India stood 71st. The point I want to make is that we are spending so much in education, for instance, Telangana government spends Rs

What are the initiatives you would take up for school infrastructures, education access in the remote areas and girl child education in the states? The Central and state governments’ efforts in the last few decades to increase number of schools and class rooms, toilets, computer and science labs, sports facilities among other infrastructure have resulted in adequate number of schools and access to education even in small hamlets. Even the girl and boy student ratio is in good numbers at enrollment stage and also at various stages of

school education. Unlike earlier, the girl student ratio in the schools has improved.

What are the reforms you are planning to bring in the education systems right from the foundations? Since we have increased the expenditure in education; the main focus is to bring about the improvement in quality of education. We intend to make students feel that they are part of the system. The intelligence quotient varies from one student to the other; some may be good at academics, some in sports, music and other extracurricular activities but average in academics. Hence, the group committees of students I am forming would be for five different purposes with defined roles and responsibilities. One committee would be on attendance monitoring, second on academic monitoring, third on science and technology, fourth on health & hygiene and fifth on sports and culture. After a period of one to two months, the students of one committee will be transferred to another committee. This initiative will ensure that at a given stage each student will be part of one committee. This way the student would feel a part of the system. For instance, the student in attendance committee would visit the houses of absentee students and counsel them and their parent. In this process, the student becomes a teacher and will develop a sense of responsibility and bring the change in him or herself. A student of Attendance Committee would see that he is not an absentee. Similarly, the student of Health & Hygiene Committee would maintain hygiene conditions. Not following the norms and conditions, he or she would be questioned by their conscience or by others. This will improve their participation and performance

12,000 crore directly and Rs 2,403.76 crore in the form of scholarships and other ways. The state government spends around Rs 50,359 per student in government school per annum and Rs 1,00,000 per student in residential schools. Telangana state has the highest number of residential schools as it is committed to provide quality education to the students from the poor financial backgrounds. But how do we get the value for the money spent and improve the quality of education is our major focus. Starting from June 2019, we will launch a massive campaign in the state to increase class attendance in schools, as in each class quality of education depends on the knowledge from the previous class. This will be a non-financial intervention that we would take up by involving parents, NGOs, media, self-help groups (SHGs) headed by government agencies involved in elimination of poverty in urban and rural areas. We had detailed discussion on this with these agencies of SHGs. Over one lakh SHGs would be involved in this programme to sensitise the poor on consequences of not attending the school classes.

POLICYMAKER’S PERSPECTIVE

 16

irrespective of their intelligence quotient. Many students feel inferior given their illiterate parental background, less IQ, not able to understand what is being taught in the class, and hence they avoid the classes at the slightest available opportunity. The above mentioned reforms would bring in significant improvement.

What are your plans in place for educators to bring reforms in the education system and improve education quality? Usually the teachers in government schools are the most qualified and meritorious as they are brought into the government system after intense efforts and thorough examination methods. For instance, recently the Telangana State Public Service Commission has recruited over 7,000 members out of 2,77,374 applicants who were merits in their graduates and post-graduate studies and also could secure top ranks in certain national and state level tests. Basically, there is no mystery about the potential of teachers in government schools. However, the general impression is that they do not contribute as much as they are supposed to once they enter into the government system. Their potential to contribute to the education system is hidden. I plan to bring in certain exercise in the work system that would encourage them to love their work or jobs and deliver the best. These exercise and methods I introduced in GHMC and previous departments that I headed and yielded best results. It

mainly involves the reminder stickers at their workstations to love their jobs and introspection to improve the education system. Monitoring and biometric systems on working hours of educators would not help much in bringing the change.

Most of your initiatives are about bringing the reforms at the primary and school level education. What are your plans for Higher Education? In our analysis, it is found that the quality of education at the research, post graduate, graduate, intermediate and school level education has an organic link with the foundation of its previous level of education. Recently, I happened to interact with the directors, and teaching staff at Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT). They had to tell that the knowledge foundation of the student streams, (required to excel in the research education) coming from universities to the research institutes are not up to the mark. When I had review meetings and interacted with vice chancellors and teaching staff of universities on the matter, they had to say the same thing for the education foundation at intermediate education level, and intermediate education staff had to say similar things about the school level education standards. Eventually it is boiling down to the basic foundation of education at school level. However, since the school education, higher education and research level studies come under my limits; we will be taking up holistic approach for the solution as the problems are different

[ dl.eletsonline.com ] The Largest Portal on Innovation in Education in Asia and the Middle East

In your stint as the GHMC Commissioner, you also tried to involve the students of school and other educational institutions in Hyderabad for the Swachh Bharat Mission. Now, with all the educational institutions from the primary to research level education under you, how do you see the opportunity for cleanliness campaigns? Since you mentioned about waste management, a lot can be done with regards to sanitation. There are over 38,000 government and private schools in Telangana. Furthermore, over 11 universities and several intermediate and degree colleges with over 10 lakh students studying in them are functioning in the state. Now, we can universalise the cleanliness campaign. Earlier, I was struggling to involve the students in the mission of cleanliness. It is my duty and obligation to indoctrinate the principals of ‘Swacchata’ in the students and make them ‘Swachh Doots’ (cleanliness campaigners). Across the government schools and educational institutions, I am forming exclusive committees of students in each class on five different subjects. One of the committees will be on health & hygiene, which will have a group of five students. For instance, 30 students in each class will be part of different committees and one of the committees would be on Swachata to be called as health committee. These committees will ensure cleanliness in class rooms, school, their individual houses and also at least 10 houses in their neighbourhood. After two to three months of training, the members of one committee will be transferred to another committee. So, by end of the year, all the students will become Swachh Dhoots. As an education secretary, I can take up the cleanliness campaign not just in Greater Hyderabad but also across the state. I tried this earlier as the GHMC Commissioner and was partly successful in my efforts.

What is the integral link you see between ‘Swachhata’ and quality of education? In one of the researches on Indian education,

Connect with us on

digitallearningonline

@dl_magazine

it was found that on any given day, 33 percent of students and 20 percent of teachers in government schools are found absent. Out of 365 days in a year, 220 are working days. And in those working days, about 50 percent of the time students and teachers do not come across eye-toeye. Even in those teacher-student contact days there would be festivals and elections among other distractions. It has been estimated that out of 365 days in a year only for about 50-55 days students and teachers are together in the class rooms. There are varied reasons for absenteeism. One of the main reasons is ill-health of either students or the teacher. About 50 countries across the globe have eradicated most of the diseases which we continue to encounter and suffer from like pneumonia, dysentery, tuberculosis, typhoid among other communicable diseases, which are caused due to unhygienic practices and passed on through contaminated water, air or touch. Through sensitisation drives on health and cleanliness, the downsides can be dealt with effectively resulting in improved class room attendance, education and of course decreased financial distress caused to the families of students and teachers due to health ailments.

Waste Management and cleanliness has been the subject of your passion. Several of your initiatives as the Commissioner of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and Commissioner & Director of Municipal Administration (CDMA) in this regard have been exemplary and been recognised and adapted nationally. How do you see the subject education? Education has always been a subject of my passion ever since the beginning of my career in 1990 and it is still close to my heart today when I have become the Education Secretary for the state. It was purely out of my passion that so far I have visited over 2,000 schools in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and also in other states in India and abroad. As our former president and scientist Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam had said: ‘If you have time, money and other resources invest them in education of children as it will help them shape their lives, become self-sufficient and support their family, friends and the country.’ I believe and live by that philosophy.

Doaba Public School: Nurturing Students Holistically

School Perspective

By adopting latest innovations and practices in school education sector, Doaba Public Senior Secondary School is fulfilling all the educational needs of its students, says Balwinder Kaur, Founder & MD, Doaba Public Senior Secondary School, in conversation with Elets News Network (ENN). To sustain in the rapidly evolving world, students must be responsive to change and receptive to new ideas. How does Doaba Public Senior Secondary School maintain such environment for its students? The foundation of Doaba Public Senior Secondary School has been established on the pillars of Change & Evolution. Our founder, Late S Balwant Singh Sandhu, an eminent educationist, renounced a comfortable, urban lifestyle in Chandigarh and set up the Doaba School in Garshankar, Punjab. This was all about change and heralded a new era of conscious education in the region. What started once as a rural school has today evolved into being an esteemed member of the British Council and UNESCO. Students excelling in academics & sports alike are awarded scholarships abroad. This presents them with opportunities for self-discovery & growth. Activities like horse riding, swimming in our semi Olympic size swimming pool, Basketball, Hockey, Football, Cricket and many more, enable our children to develop the confidence to compete in the international arena. Each Doabian is a change maker in their own right.

What are the best practices adopted by the school in its curriculum to nurture life-long learners? Real education is not limited to textbooks only. Thus, a culture of experiential learning is inculcated in our school. Our digital classrooms are air conditioned to facilitate the comfort of learning. Our state-of-art laboratories and well stocked library offer children unbounded access to the world. Our approach to subjects is an amalgamation of thinking, experimenting and discovering. When children discover on their own, the learning stays with them forever. Furthering the Government’s initiative, Atal Innovation Mission of Niti Aayog, our Atal Lab is designed to spark creativity & propel students to delve into the world of design & computation thinking. Learning by doing, brain storming, role play, demonstration method and discussion method are some of the techniques employed by our educators to ensure that our children make use of all the faculties of their mind.

How is the growing use of technology in the education sector, improving the teaching – learning practices, assessment methodologies and improving the learning outcome?

Artificial Intelligence is the future. The future rests with innovation, computing and being two steps ahead of the competitors. Doaba students are taught to use technology to translate their ideas into reality with precision, perfection and accuracy. Technology aided learning and teaching methods aid in developing an analytical mindset. Doaba children are future ready.

What measures are adopted by the Doaba Public Senior Secondary School for active engagement of parents along with the teachers for holistic learning amongst its students? Family values go a long way in shaping up an individual. A child raised in the midst of sound values, unconditional love, zero judgement & affection, grows up to be a secured and confident adult. We ensure that parents are equally involved in the development of the child. We maintain constant contact with each parent, while ensuring that we do not breach a child’s right to privacy. Parents too are counselled if required. Emphasis is laid on celebrating festivals, holy days followed by community lunch. We provide our students an atmosphere conducive for growth and where parents help their wards in journey to success. At Doaba, each individual transcends from being a learner to being an achiever.

What is the school’s mission and vision to ensure the growth of every student? At Doaba, our only aim is to shape young, impressionable minds positively. We are always guided by the philosophy that, “EVERY CHILD MATTERS”. We thus, always strive to nurture our learners who always listen, question, challenge, and probe the world around them.

Sanskriti School, Pune

School Perspective

Striving for Excellence in Education Sanskriti School helps the children to become caring and sharing individuals, equipped with skills to make right choices in life and grow up as responsible citizens of the country, says Devyani Mungali, Founder and Director, Sanskriti School, Pune, in conversation with Elets New Network (ENN). Metaskill which if developed and honed properly during the early childhood years will help shape all kinds of good habits and traits later in life including perseverance, patience, the ability to delay gratification and resilience. All these traits are the most important factors for happiness and success in life.

How is the school using technology to herald changes in the school education sphere?

Devyani Mungali

Founder and Director, Sanskriti School, Pune

What initiatives have been undertaken at Sanskriti School to nurture leadership qualities among students?

What are some of the means by which you are helping your children get future ready?

We have a number of activities and programmes to encourage leadership traits in all our students starting from their formative years. It includes programmes that encourage teamwork, the spirit of research and enquiry amongst all our students. We also have a well structured programme -- Prefect system under which students are chosen as a part of the school council every year to essay leadership roles. These students are chosen in a democratic manner where they make a presentation to the rest of the students and votes are cast with equal weightage to teachers and students.

We have a multi-pronged approach to achieve this. For example -- We are the first school in India to set up a Virtual Reality Lab as a teaching aid for some of the topics. In other instances, we have meaningful student engagements with thought leaders from the industry and academia. It helps our children gain a better understanding of Artifical Intelligence (AI). We also focus on fostering creativity, confidence and leadership in all our students to ensure that they become successful in future.

How do you view the role of discipline in the current environment with changing societal norms?

It is our view that technology will never supplant a teacher but always supplement her. The human and emotional quotient in teaching and the connection with students help educator to be at the centre of any change/initiative needed to be brought in a school education system. With this goal in mind, we have a well structured and exhaustive in-house teacher training programme which is the key to implement our vision successfully.

Earlier, the term discipline used to act as a coercive tool that compels people to do something without trying to create the right buy in. This is clearly outdated but inculcating the skill of self discipline in all students is still valid and very important. Self discipline is the

We have been early adopters of lot of data-driven decision making to foster bespoke learning programmes for our children. The undisputed fact is that all children are unique and each child has their own pace of learning, different interests and aptitude. The conventional school system focused on trying to create standardisation and conformism. We have used technology to track the unique development pattern (especially the social, emotional and behavioural skills) of each child over time so we can create customised plans to serve their bespoke needs.

“Creating a better world by molding a future generation in the right manner is the foundation of CANVAS” How does Canvas International Preschool’s philosophy help developing strong foundation in early childhood? Our educational philosophy has been influenced by the educational philosophy of three great educationists, Dr Maria Montessori, Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi. Dr Maria Montessori had revolutionized the early childhood education by establishing children’s houses. We at Canvas recreated that establishment. Our schools are like miniature doll houses, a place where everything is designed according to children specific needs, where they are free to move around. What are the various programmes conducted by Canvas International Preschool for holistic development of kids? We don’t have any classroom as at Canvas we have fun rooms, where an exciting learning environment is created by implementing creative and innovative teaching concepts. We were inspired by colorful themes in the designing of our schools and up to a great extent in designing of our activities. Play is one of the most important activities for children. Our P.S.E.D approach improves the integration of both hemispheres. • Cluster sitting • Solving math problems in multiple ways • VAKOG (Visual, Kinaesthetic, Olfactory and Gustatory) • Rhyming Story telling • Stage activities • Positive attitude (Circle time, Special days, Art activity, Appreciation, Positive affirmations etc • Practice non- dominant hand • Mind mapping • Activities which involves primarily left brain (coloring, pasting, origami, dance, walk in the nature etc.) • Ocular movement • Visualization and hand-on activities together

What are the best practices adopted by the preschool in its curriculum for all-round growth of students? At Canvas, we offer developmentally appropriate day-long curriculum that offers self-paced learning for every child and hence our fun rooms are designed as learning and discovery corners. Our day plan is different in many ways as kids will not be expected to sit for long period of time. The most important thing is that our curriculum focuses on multiple intelligence: • Linguistic Intelligence • Kinesthetic Intelligence

How does the school ensure active participation of parents to be aware about their wards’ performance? At Canvas we believe in the meaning of the word ‘kindergarten’ which means ‘children’s garden’. Here, we feel that children are like flowers, and flowers need to be cultivated in an environment between school and parents. A parent needs to be as happy and excited about school as they want their child to be. Our monthly circular with development skills comprises of – • Fine and Gross motor skills of every month and guidelines specified for parents. • Keeping parents updated with what’s happening in their child’s classroom. • Parents are kept informed of the monthly themes and topics, and ways in which they can participate at school and at home with these themes. Campus Placement in India: An Overview In the present era, campus placement holds a great importance for students and educational institutes. While, it helps a student in building a strong foundation for the professional career ahead without facing the real-world job struggle, peer-competition or family pressure, a good placement record gives a competitive edge to an institute/ university in the education market, observes Rumani Arora of Elets News Network (ENN).

C

ampus placements provide the students with a foot-inthe-door opportunity, enabling them to start off their career right after they have completed their course curriculum. Furthermore, they get to interact and engage with the industry professionals during the placement drives, which further help lay a foundation for their prospective career in the future as they familiarise with potential contacts from their chosen career field. Placements have gradually become an integral part of an institute’s offerings, which was not the scenario earlier. Nowadays, students pay special attention to placement records while selecting a college or university for the admission. And it is rightly so, if a student is paying huge amount of parents’ hard-earned money as fees to the institutes/universities, he/she has the right to calculate the ROI (return on investment), which in this case is a lucrative job. Madhu Chitkara, Vice-Chancellor, Chitkara University, Punjab, supported the aforesaid approach of students and their parents during a panel discussion at 10th Higher Education and Human Resource Conclave 2019, Chandigarh.

38

june 2019

“Nearly 30-40 years ago, students were not expecting jobs from the colleges. I did my graduation from Delhi and I never asked for the job from my college and it was not their responsibility. Now the scenario has changed, the students are aware that Colleges/ Universities have the responsibility to provide placements,” she said. Moreover, placement track record of any institute or university helps the students to comprehend their future accomplishments and encourages them to register for admissions. Every institute is incorporated with a placement cell to assist the students in finding the right job where they can sharpen their skills and prepare for a bright future ahead. Further, it will also help to attract the fresh applicants for admissions. A good placement record is also helpful in making an institute secure a higher spot in the college rankings. National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) gives great importance to the ‘placement records’ of a University/College while preparing the ranking list.

Challenges Technological Transformations: With the technological advancements happening in every sector, the nature of jobs is changing rapidly. New

Considering the trends, education system now has to be developed in such a way that it prepares the students for jobs which are not even created as of now. In short, there is an urgent need to bridge the gap between Industry requirements and the existent skill set of the students.. According to a recent survey conducted by National Sample Survey Office, India’s unemployment rate rose to a 45-year high during 2017-2018. Another report by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) says that almost 11 million Indians lost their jobs during 2018. While there can be many other reasons behind falling no of jobs, the gap between skill set and Industry requirements is one of the major reasons behind this phenomenon. Economical Changes In the rapidly changing ecosystem, it is very important to focus on the skills and knowledge that are relevant to the future. A few institutions have identified programmes to handle this apprehension. Besides, there is an urgent need that institutions find innovative mechanisms to nurture employable students incessantly by imparting quality education.

Steps to improve Placements Campus recruitment is witnessing tremendous transformation with the emergence of technological advancements in the process. Utilising multiple digital services, recruiters are able to figure out innovative and cost-effective strategies for conducting a campus recruitment drive, recruiting top candidates and meeting the recruitment numbers. During a penal discussion at 10th Higher Education and Human Resource Conclave, Chandigarh, Manish

transparent with its employees in various processes”. It translates to the fact that it is high time that institutes keep themselves abreast with latest digital trends and create an effective placement strategy. Here are the few steps Universities/Institutes can take to ensure optimum placements. Enhanced Profile: Universities/Institutions must give importance to improve their profile be it having a professionally designed website or an attractive marketing brochure. Marketing the previous placement records, academic records and awards received by the college is also an effective tool for the same. Besides, promoting the professors/lecturers (with excellent academic and/or industry back ground) and marketing their college infrastructure (if they boast of it) are some of the trusted methods. Networking: Institutes/Universities must leverage on their existing network to reach the Company HR’s and invite them to their college for the placement process. Besides, their placement cell must also dedicatedly work towards creating new connections and nurturing the old ones. Social media and other professional websites like LinkedIn can be an excellent networking

and diversified jobs have come into existence, which were never heard of before. And the trend is going to continue in the future with Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Machine Learning taking over the traditional educational module. Chocko Valliappa, Founder & CEO, Hiremee, while speaking at the 11th Higher Education & Human Resource Conclave Pune 2019 said, “The industry is moving to industry 4.0 and the amount of metamorphosis the world is going to see is enormous. One million jobs are going to be displaced; one million people are going to be displaced. New jobs are going to come. They say new 600 forms of jobs will come in. So how our education system is going to change to that world?” Gap between skill set and Industry Requirements

tool for this. Skill Training and Employability: Skill Training is one of the most important factors responsible for improving the placement record of an institute or university. Companies no longer just look for academic excellence and aptitude but they prefer candidates who have practical exposure and problem solving ability in reallife situations.. So, instead of starting training in the last year, colleges must focus on imparting skill training to students from the first year onwards. Institutes can also keep some KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) and measure student’s progress against this. Placing right candidate for the right job: Universities/ Institutes must focus on bridging the gap between the right candidate and the right job. They must avoid the tendency to place as many candidates and instead focus on placing the candidates who are ready and eligible for the role. Companies critically focus on the “Attended Vs Recruited” numbers when they visit a college for campus recruitment. It gives them a fair idea of which colleges have high quality or job-ready candidates. If a college wants to boost its placement record, it is even worth getting eligible students from nearby colleges rather than its own students again who have less chances of getting through.

DR HARI OM IAS, SECRETARY, GAD, GOVERNMENT OF UTTAR PRADESH

In terms of global education index, India is at 130th position. Around 30 percent of children are not getting primary education as either they are dropouts or can’t get themselves enrolled in schools. We used to be known as “Jagat Guru” in ancient

times and we should cherish our golden past with an eye on present. Rather than ignoring the problem, we must find out its solution. Another important thing is to define the objective of the education. Currently, the sole objective of the education is to get a job. But, we need to focus on physical education, extracurricular activities, and moral education, along with academics. Students are overburdened with studies and that’s why they have no time for such essential things. A renowned school can be a good name as far as education market is concerned but most of the educational institutes in the country are still required to prove their importance for betterment of society. Education is not meant only for getting a job, rather, an educated person must help the society to gain new heights. Education should actually help a person to enjoy their life but it changes as we start focusing on secondary things. So, it is important that education helps a person to become a good human being along with being academically excellent.

CONFERENCE REPORT

We must focus on nurturing patriotism among our students. If a person wants to do something for the country, joining the Indian Army is not the only way. Being a good citizen is also one of the best ways to serve the country. Our efforts supporting

the country’s development and betterment encourage soldiers on the border. To improve the education scenario in India, it is important for all of us to share the responsibility. It is the duty of principals from finest schools in India to understand and cater the needs of students hailing from tier-2 and tier-3 cities by interacting with them, and building and managing a micro-environment to provide such an education. Another important aspect is to improve the education sector sensibly. Innovations and latest methodologies are considerably exciting for every stakeholder of the education ecosystem. But, we must be sensible enough to adopt those changes so that changes help in building a sustainable and quality education landscape. India has got a huge demographic dividend which needs to be leveraged by the educational institutions to fulfil the educational needs across the country. Countries like Japan,

Germany and Italy have a deficiency of skilled manpower. We can help these countries in this regard. We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Japan to provide five lakh skilled employees.”

KEY SPEAKERS Dr S K Rathor

Founder & Chairman, Sanfort Group of Schools In recent years, school value system has gone down along with the parent’s faith in the system. We need to create an environment in the school ecosystem where we need to bring together all the stakeholders - teachers, parents and students. And we should

CONFERENCE REPORT

educate the parents to build again a ‘Guru-Shishya’ environment in the school. The faith of the parents in the school education system should be improved. So it will bring a win-win outcome for both parents and students.”

R K Sharma

Managing Director, Rainbow Academy Senior Secondary School We believe that education is not just skill, it’s an attitude and we are dedicated to impart education for excellence. We have started garbage farming as the skill education for our students. Under our mission – Trash to Treasure – we are converting the garbage into compost. We

have filled 170 metre stretch of our village road with biodegradable waste. Under another initiative “Mission Muskaan”, we distribute sanitary napkins to the girl students of remote areas. We are one of the

first schools to install free sanitary napkin vending machine at our campus.”

On GuruQ platform, students have the option of finding gurus of different calibre, gender, capabilities, as per their requirement. Also, it allows them to

choose the type of tuitions – online, home, individual or group classes. We also have a facility where students can create a study group with their friends on the platform and also choose a tutor of their interest. It is quite cost-effective as compared to individual classes.”

Anirudh Gupta

CEO, DCM Group of Schools We need to reorient and re-strategise the way of learning. Technology is a

double-edged weapon. We need to choose it with care and see we are not becoming bored with it. It is also important for us to create an environment for the students where they inhale learning, absorb learning rather than push the learning through.”

CEO, NexGen Computers Migrating to the education industry 10 years ago was the best thing we did. Today,

we are working with more than 500 schools for their education technology needs. We

deal into smart classrooms, language labs, robotics labs, STEM labs, ERP software for schools. We keep ahead of the competition by bringing innovative products into the market. Along with implementing technology, it is important for teachers to use it effectively for the students to gain maximum from it.”

Kanak Gupta

Director, Seth M R Jaipuria Group of Schools When we talk about creativity & innovation, we don’t bring it to the classroom. For example, History happens to be one of my favourite subjects but I studied History only after I went to College /University. For

me, school history ended in 1947, what happened after 1947 was not history. No one talked about 1971 or 1965 and no one talked about Kargil. But we were expected to know all this come examination time. Somewhere there has been discord in our set up and as well as what the expectations are.”

we have created a whole city where we have buildings, roads, vehicles, industries and community centre. We have around 40 brands associated with us to make the cities real.”

Ishan Negi

Regional Manager, Yellow.Live From the last decade, books have been backed by the software and smart class concept. The reason behind us coming in this industry was to back the education, where the software will help not to educate students but parents as well. At yellow.live, we

provide tracking solutions to the schools under which GPS system is installed in the buses. This way, they can track their buses from anywhere on the go.”

Director, Scottish Early Years Early childhood education has a great impact on the lives of children.
