Value and Service Keeps Jane Townsend Coming Back to Reno

Jane Townsend, Associate Director, Ag Association Management Services, Inc. (AAMSI), is happy to talk about planning meetings with Caesars Entertainment in Reno. And being that Townsend has brought 27 events and counting to town, any meeting planner considering Reno would be wise to not only hear what she has to say, but also to recognize how enthusiast she is when discussing her time there.

Townsend’s first meeting in Reno as an event coordinator was in 1998 at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino for the Mid Pacific Water Users Conference—which has returned 20 times since and this January broke its attendance record.

The Family Farm Alliance Conference is set for October at Silver Legacy, continuing a seven-year run with Caesars Entertainment in Reno and the United States Committee on Irrigation & Drainage (USCID) which begins a two-year contract in 2025. She’s also hosted numerous events at Eldorado Resort Casino.

Asked, “what is it about Reno and Caesars Entertainment’s offerings that have led you to host events in the city?”

Townsend highlighted Reno’s value and the family-style service she receives from Caesars Entertainment.

Townsend was quick to emphasize strong attendance for her Reno events as well as the value Caesars Entertainment provides in catering, room rates and audio-visual costs – which she said are significantly less than other locations. She noted the Mid Pacific Water Users Conference attendance almost doubled when it settled in Reno. Family Farm Alliance Conference attendance was up 24% the first year it moved from a longtime stint in another destination, and has risen another 20% since.

“The less obvious, and more personal answer, is that Caesars staff have become like family over the years,” Townsend said. “From Don Goodman and Veronica Ecklund in sales to Elizabeth Marquis, Jennifer Fitzpatrick and Inga in catering, to Eric Jr. and his team in audio visual, and Albert, Jeff

and Monica at Roxy. Also, The Mid Pacific Water Users Conference does a bowling event at the National Bowling Stadium each year — super convenient and FUN— which has grown from about 40 people our first year to 240 this year. Shout out to Mike Larragueta and Renee McGinnes for their super efforts with Reno Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority.”

Townsend also shared how she was treated as “just a sale” when working with other destinations whose sales teams failed to communicate properly and too often were unwilling to provide any logistical or financial accommodations. Her event wasn’t a priority and neither was building a long-term professional relationship.

“I’ve been doing this for 35 years, and I can honestly say that in my experience, Reno is the best value out there for hosting events. As a meeting planner, my job is to make money for the associations.”

Returning to Reno’s value, Townsend said: “I’ve been doing this for 35 years, and I can honestly say that in my experience, Reno is the best value out there for hosting events. As a meeting planner, my job is to make money for the associations. For most, their conference is their main revenue source for the year. TThe Reno value trickles down to our attendees – they are offer low resort fees, and we can keep registration fees reasonable. This compels our member companies to send more attendees. It’s a win for our members and a win for us. It was a constant and stressful struggle to try and make a profit in other cities/ venues.”

“Reno and Caesars Entertainment are the polar opposite; flexible and accommodating, and they offer creative solutions to help you tackle unique challenges,” she said.

Being that Reno is like a second home to Townsend there are a few stops she makes whenever she’s in town. There’s always a lunch at The Brew Brothers, dinner at Roxy and a fortune reading from Zoltar at the Circus Circus Midway.

Dear Reader,

In Reno, we pride ourselves on the relationships we build by providing family-style service that focuses on attendee satisfaction and a strong return on your investment. In fact, it is an honor to provide our meetings and events customers world class service with small town hospitality. As many know, that’s our special sauce.

What many don’t know about this special Northern Nevada destination is that Caesars Entertainment has deep roots in Reno. The patriarch of our company, Don Carano, was born in Reno and opened the historic Eldorado Hotel Casino in 1973. Our history here is longstanding and expansive. We proudly showcased entertainment such Sammy Davis Jr. and the Rat Pack in our early days, and we continue to offer top-notch entertainment of today’s era.

We have seen many changes over the decades. Now, we encompass eight square blocks of Downtown Reno. Known as “The City within a City,” we have three distinct resorts in our portfolio: Silver Legacy, Eldorado and Circus Circus. These seamlessly connected resorts create the largest mega-resort in the western United States outside of Las Vegas.

And our offerings are extensive. For one, attendees are never at a loss to find incredible food at our properties. A hallmark of our rich history, the Carano family — Don, his wife Rhonda, and his five children, Gary, Glenn, Gene, Gregg and Cindy — created our own golden standard in dining long before the terms “foodie” and “farm-to-table” were mainstream. This is a tradition and standard we proudly embrace at all our restaurants and through our catering services team.

There really is so much to discover in this vibrant and growing location, whether it is our beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range, and ample golf options or fly fishing on the Truckee River. And not to be missed are unique and historical landmarks like Virginia City. Also to be enjoyed is our burgeoning art scene and bustling Midtown. All are perfect for off-site experiences.

So, I invite you to read through the following pages and take a journey into Caesars Entertainment’s Northern Nevada enclave in Reno — where we set the table for you to succeed.

From our Reno family to yours, we are here at your service.

Sincerely,

Caesars Entertainment

Experience Extraordinary Outdoors in Reno

Suggested packing plan for attending an event at one of Caesars Entertainment’s three Reno properties: smart business casual, evening wear, golf clubs, fishing waders, hiking boots, and an adventurers mindset for fun!

Caesars Entertainment has heard the call of the great outdoors in Reno and is excited to assist meeting planners in designing an impeccable VIP excursion, challenging team-building exercise or personal day of exploration. Caesars Entertainment’s unparalleled service and a company-wide commitment to wellness and producing unforgettable experiences can help take any meeting out of the convention hall and into the dynamic beauty of Northern Nevada.

With so many enticing outdoors options, meeting planners may not know where to start. How about a less than half-a-mile away from Caesars Entertainment’s Reno campus at Truckee River Whitewater Park at Wingfield Park. Open year-round, the free park is an ideal introduction to the prized waterway with kayaking, canoeing and whitewater rafting.

The Truckee River flows northeast through Reno before emptying into Pyramid Lake. A variety of outfitters are available to guide groups on various sections of its 121-mile course, which includes class 3 and 4 rapids. Self-guided floats are also popular.

The Carson River is a gentler experience with milder rapids.

Reno is a fisherman’s dream, with a variety of sites available to cast your line for rainbow and brown trout. And there are plenty of guide services to teach techniques and help find where the fish are biting. This makes for a fun group activation or bleisure opportunity.

Getting one’s steps in has never been stressed more at meetings than today. Luckily, Reno is a city asking to be explored with hiking

trails through the town’s parks, across the Great Western Basin and miles up into the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Noteworthy are the Huffaker Park Lookout Trail which offers sweeping views of the Reno skyline. It is about 1.7 miles long and is perfect for both walking and trail running. There is also a shorter option from the same trailhead if time is limited.

More challenging endeavors include the Hunter Creek Trail or Upper Thomas Creek Trail, with RenoTahoe saying both trails offer gorgeous views of streams and waterfalls during their 5.7- and 5.5- mile hikes, respectively.

Swap out your hiking boots for cowboy boots and venture back to the prospecting days of the mid-19th century in Virginia City. Roughly 20 miles southeast of Reno, the mining boomtown is most famous for the Comstock Lode – an 1859 discovery that extracted billions of dollars in silver and gold. Maybe you and your attendees won’t strike it rich, but the experience of strolling down a wooden sidewalk into a saloon, riding a steam train or being spooked on a ghost tour is worth its weight in… well, silver and gold.

And then of course, there’s Lake Tahoe!

With 72-miles of shoreline and surrounded by snowcapped peaks, Lake Tahoe is not only a boater’s paradise, but a tranquil destination for paddleboarding, kayaking, hiking and fishing. Lakeside Marina is a roughly five-minute walk from Harvey’s Lake Tahoe and Harrah’s Lake Tahoe.

Singing Reno’s praises, Outside Magazine said, “If you’re looking for endless outdoor fun with a side of city vibes, Reno just might be your next base camp, too.” The city was named one of the publication’s 15 Happiest Places to Live in the U.S. in 2023.

Let Caesars Entertainment help add a bit of natural wonder to your next event in Reno.

And don’t forget the sunscreen.

A Reno Family Story: the Carano Family and Caesars Entertainment

The story of Caesars Entertainment cannot be told without Reno and its homegrown son, who would go on to be the patriarch of what is today the largest casino-entertainment company in the U.S. and one of the world’s most diversified casino-entertainment providers: Donald Carano.

Born in Reno on October 17, 1931, Carano attended Reno High School and the University of San Francisco (USF). After completing his undergraduate degree, he joined the United States Army and following two years of service returned to campus and graduated with honors from USF Law School. Engaging in a plethora of business ventures, including founding the prestigious McDonald Carano Law Firm and partnering in several smaller casino projects around Reno, Carano opened the landmark Eldorado Hotel Casino in 1973.

The Eldorado set a new standard for gaming properties. Located across the street from the famous Harrah’s Hotel and Casino, whose entertainment marquee featured the likes of Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and the rest of the Rat Pack in Sammy’s Showroom, Carano recognized El Dorado’s star attraction had to be uniquely its own.

El Dorado’s A-list celebrity became unmatched quality in food and beverage. True pioneers in the gastronomic field, the Carano Family (Don, wife Rhonda, and his children, Gary, Glenn, Gene, Gregg and Cindy) created a new golden standard in dining long before the terms “foodie” and “farm-to-table” became fashionable. That proud tradition of innovation in both dining and libations continues to this day.

Informed and energized by four decades of success and

understanding what the foundation of a gaming and hospitality company should be, the Caranos set their sights on expanding their hospitality family beyond Reno—one property they owned in Shreveport, Louisiana, was also named The Eldorado. Sadly, Don Carano would not witness the meteoric rise of Eldorado Resorts, Inc., to what is now known as Caesars Entertainment, as he passed away in October 2017.

From 2016-2020, the firm would acquire several major gaming companies, including Isle of Capri, Tropicana Entertainment and, of course, Caesars Entertainment. The spectacular growth has been defined by an ethos centered around family-style service, unmatched excellence in hospitality and an emphasis on exceptional food and beverage menus. Gary Carano, Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors for Caesars Entertainment, and his son Anthony Carano, President & Chief Operating Officer, Caesars Entertainment, are there to see to it that their family vision and legacy live on.

Caesars Entertainment’s roots are in Reno. The company’s and the Carano family’s commitment to the Biggest Little City in the World and Northern Nevada goes well beyond the thousands of jobs provided at Reno and Lake Tahoe properties.

Working with the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada, the Caesars Nevada Team Member Scholarship is presented to graduating high school students of Nevada Caesars Entertainment employees.

The Don Carano Legacy Scholarship was established to provide support for dependents of Caesars Entertainment Team Members who are a graduating high school senior or who are enrolled in a college or advanced learning program. On Your 6 Bourbon partnered with the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada in support of the Don Carano Legacy Scholarship. On Your 6 featured Don Carano and the scholarship on the Hero Stories section of its website.

“At Caesars Entertainment, our primary focus is treating our Team Members and guests like family, something my grandfather started with the launch of Eldorado Resorts in 1973,” said Anthony Carano on the bourbon’s website. “He always considered education a fundamental building block, and I know he would be so proud to help open doors for our Team Members’ families.”

Supporting the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows, the Donald L. Carano Youth & Teen Clubhouse in Reno is a place where Club kids can socialize, get free meals, receive academic support, explore new interests, play sports and more.

Family-style service has always been the foundation of what is now Caesars Entertainment. It’s a tradition starting more than half a century ago in Reno and remains the company’s calling card in Northern Nevada and throughout all is resorts and casinos today.

The museum said his legacy lives on at the National Automobile Museum (The Harrah Collection). Cars owned by John F. Kennedy, Frank Sinatra and John Wayne are on display, as are many made famous on the silver screen and some from the 19th century.

The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum (The Discovery) is Nevada’s largest hands-on science center. Media assets said it boasts 67,000 square feet of ever-changing exhibitions focused on science, technology, engineering, art, history and invention. It also regularly hosts featured exhibitions on topics ranging from rare monster-sized fish to larger-than-life dinosaur fossils to mind-bending puzzles and more!

Founded in 1931, the Nevada Museum of Art (the Museum) is the only art museum in Nevada accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, its website notes. Designed by internationally renowned architect Will Bruder, the present Museum facility opened in 2003 at the heart of Reno’s downtown Liberty district. The four-level, 70,000-square-foot building is inspired by geological formations in Northern Nevada’s Black Rock Desert and serves as a visual metaphor for the institution’s scholarly focus on art and environment.
