South Africa & Japan are without a doubt two of the most burgeoning territories in the world when it comes to their ever-growing enthusiasm towards electronic music. Their demand for world-class electronic acts have become truly overwhelming of late, and the infrastructures in each place to put on an event like Ultra are healthier than they’ve ever been. These thriving scenes, coupled with the additional fact that these locations are some of the most beautiful I’ve ever come across, made the decision to expand into Africa and deeper into Asia an extremely exciting one to make.

of fellow countrymen, in the form of bona fideüberstar NICKY ROMERO and chart-topping duo W&W. Flying the flag for Sweden will be 22-year old superstar ALESSO, whilst Chicago-based trio KREWELLA look set to provide the much needed injection of bass to proceedings!

What’s more, headlining the entire event will be none other than Dutch superstar DJ, producer and Musical Freedom label boss TIËSTO! A firm favourite with Ultra fans across the world, and without doubt one of the planet’s most in demand DJs, Tiësto will be supported by an array

If that weren’t enough, joining these international big hitters in the first wave of talent to be announced, will be a whole host of South Africa’s finest talent and local heroes in the form of Cape Town based duo GOLDFISH,underground house star BLACK COFFEE and the stellar three-piece outfit hailing from Johannesburg, MI CASA. Last but by no means least, legendary house music partners EUPHONIK & DJ FRESH will be stepping up to represent South Africa in style.

Not content to do anything in a traditional fashion, not only have they released a massive 39 versions of the song personalized for most countries of the world, but they are also running a contest for fans to get their own unique version of the song every day for a month! Details of the contest can be found at www.borntorage.com. In celebration of the new single, the inimitable duo went one step further and successfully joined the history books by beating the Guinness world record for the largest pillow fight ever at their show in Chicago on Saturday, giving the concept of ‘happy violence’ a whole new meaning. Beating the previous record of 3706 participants, Dada Life succeeded in their challenge getting an audience of 3,813 to take part in the crazy pillow fight. Packed with all the exuberant energy that you have come to expect from Dada Life, ‘Born To Rage’ is a bold call to arms for ravers everywhere. Breaking down the intro into a drawn out chant of ‘born to rage’, the duo builds a wave of momentum behind it as they layer marching drums and rising synths; driving towards a crescendo, the track drops as they unleash the kind of explosive drum line and infectious punk rock style hook that make it impossible to stand still, destined to soundtrack the months to come at clubs and festivals everywhere. ‘Born To Rage’ is Dada Life’s first original material since the release of their sophomore album ‘The Rules Of Dada’ late last year. Since then the inimitable duo have been keeping themselves busy by launching their own country, Dada Land; breaking the record for the World’s largest pillow fight and bringing their infamous “Dada Land Compound” shows to cities around North America. Now, with their first new single this year they certainly aren’t pulling any punches.

INTERVIEW DJNEWSMAGAZINE

The name Kalm Kaoz is a definitive paradox, and once hearing the music from this electronic music producing duo, the name makes complete sense. The beats created by SlingR and Mote Haus, are a scintillating combination of an intensely chaotic frenzy of power and an inherent undercurrent of joy and optimism. They talk a little bit more about their project here…

Hey guys, nice to speak to you! how are you doing? Where are you reading this interview? SlingR: We’re here in our LA studio, the “Love Kave” as we fondly call it, after a month long tour through Europe, working on a host of new tracks while preparing for our next release, a remake of David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust” which will drop on Beatport December 25, 2013 – adding to the energy of the merry day. We’ll be dropping two additional tracks shortly thereafter and ma ny more in the queue – nothing brings us more joy than sharing music. We’re so grateful to DJNews Mag and your epic audience. Motoe Haus: The Love Kave has been a great inspiration to us – with lots of pool parties, calm and chaotic moments, and never ending saturation in music and production, so it’s a great place to connect with DJ News Mag! How was your summer 2013? Give us some highlights! SlingR: It’s been a wild and wonderful year… The universe has been on our side. 2013 has been a dream with so many blessings and highlights. We formed Kalm Kaoz in February and in nine months we’ve been fortunate to receive warm responses from the dance music community and gracious and thoughtful attention from media and press. Frankly, we’d have to say the biggest highlight of the year was Armin van Buuren saying to us on the ADE panel “My colleagues here created a great mix... a GREAT MIX,” referring to our set “Kaoz Theory” that we spun at MMC/Ultra. Receiving a compliment like this from one of the greatest DJ on earth and house music pioneer was profoundly humbling. I had to pinch myself and go back to the GoPro footage – we simply couldn’t believe it! Huge thank you to Mr. van Buuren.

worthy in a world of brilliant producers and DJs. We each have our own vibes when producing music: Motoe Haus is a funky bastard and grooves deeply, from tech house to deep house, he’s got a DJ touch that is wicked and he craves producing bitching beats with his innate funkalicious style. I adore old school rock ‘n roll, power chords, and music that makes fists pump in the air and big room crowds go airborne. The marriage of our different musical styles, from DJing to production, and hearing the output of our combined vision has been profoundly rewarding. Throwing our Electrik Kool-Aid party with the Pacha Group in Ibiza during closing season to celebrate the release of our first single, “Get Happy”, and up upcoming album release, “K-Hole” We’ve just returned from the Amsterdam Dance Event where SlingR was on the ADE Radio panel with Armin van Buuren and a host of dance music legends. We were honored and humbled to be included in the panel and the organizers of ADE did a brilliant job – the conference was magical, the people brilliant, and the energy off the hook! Thank you ADE! We could read in some other articles that you want to help the global dance music community to make a difference! Is this your vision? SlingR: Unity through music... we hope to build bridges and a deeper understanding of our dance music community as it relates to a world that often doesn’t understand our culture. There’s no avoiding the attention dance music and festvals are getting. In regards to all the negativity and social stigmas... it seems we’ve beem having many of the same debates for 30 years!

“PRODUCING MUSIC IS AIR TO US. - WE BREATHE MUSIC.”

In February, we began working together to forge a musical vision that is unique and

10

Motoe Haus: Our 60’s & 70’s rock influence gives us a unique approach to electro and other genres we dig, like deep and tech house. We hope to be a channel for that energy and music to find a new audience. The music is so potent, filled with power, passion and love.

You just released your brand new track called ‘Get Happy’ Feat Ashley Kepler. How the collaboration is born between you and the singer? The first of your 4 next upcoming singles right? SlingR: Ashley is simply the epitome of a muse. Her soul is free and gorgeous, her voice and musical essence are contagious. Ashley worked with Motoe Haus on tracks in the past and when we listened to her voice - we knew immediately that she had the power and tone that could stand next to Judy Garland for our remake of Ms. Garland’s “Get Happy”. Ashley flew in from Lake Tahoe (in Northern California) and we spent a week or so in the studio laying down a host of tracks, discussing and sharing creativity and artistic passions at the Love Kave. It was a magical and musical marinade! Ashley’s brilliance motivated us to use her vocals on two of more of upcoming tracks. She’s set a high bar and the thought of using other vocalists is tough. She’s part of the Kalm Kaoz family and you’ll surely hear her on many tracks in the future – she’s our muse! Motoe Haus: Electronic music is building bridges to all genres of music. We are shortly releasing three new ”remakes,” as we call them, of David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust”, Jimmy Hendrix’s “Crosstown Traffic”, and Fleetwood Mac’s “Second Hand News”.

DJNEWSMAGAZINE INTERVIEW

If we follow your vision, you want to integrate rock n’ roll sounds into the new EDM stuff? SlingR: The 60s and 70s rock ‘n roll era created epic albums that were touched by the universe. The universe helped them create powerful music to get people’s attention, help them deal with the challenging moments and energy of the 60s and 70s; the power, creativity and complexity of their music just makes your jaw drop. The musical artists of 60s/70s were seekers, asking questions, and trying to find a path – a way to live while the world was in chaos. We do believe that music is the most powerful force on earth, both to unite as well as communicate. The music of the 60s and 70s stopped wars – flower power and the peace sign, just like our beloved heart sign, stopped wars. A flower literally corked the guns of the U.S. government during that period. The love expressed in this music was of another force – a greater force, and this force uses music as its primary vehicle for global communication and change. Motoe Haus: House music is about the same ideas in many ways as old school rock ‘n roll, and is just as powerful. Just Instagram house music and the images that come up evoke peace, love and joy and are clearly stating “we’re all here trying to celebrate our lives.” Are you not scared about this « pressure » that many producers have more and more coming from this industry (EDM)? SlingR: Sharing and music are intertwined. Music is the universal language that surpasses borders and centuries. Throughout rock ‘n roll’s history, 38,000 tracks were released. In dance music, alone, there were over 300,000 tracks released just this year. We’re swimming in a tsunami of grand musical creation. Motoe Haus: We do believe, as DJs and producers, that you must bring a unique vision and stand for something – you’ve got to have your own sound and essence. It’s not about genre or format, but how the music makes you feel, so stretching and flexing the structure within dance is important to us.

What’s in the pipeline? You already have been a little bit featured around the world, in Italia with Dj Mag for example... What kind of things are you preparing? SlingR: We’ve got a host of tracks completed in addition to our up and coming remakes, including more original content, celebration, cheekiness and mischief...this is supposed to be fun. The human condition is to love and laugh... this is our true nature. But the world can be a tough place at times, or for some, all of the time. If we can help make it a little softer, through raging our faces off and celebrating, while maybe helping some kids... voila. Our pipeline is full of laughs, spreading love, compassion, and mischief through music. Motoe Haus: In addition to our music releases, we’re excited about bringing our Eletrik Kool-Aid party to festivals and clubs and new audiences around the world. We’re hoping to tour Brazil and South Africa this year, so that’s incredibly exciting. SlingR: We’re also preparing our Kalm Kaoz radio station and we’re pumped to share all types of genres and Kalm Kaoz DJ mixes. What your biggest musical accomplishment when you look back in the past till now? SlingR: Forming Kalm Kaoz and having our sound and music embraced by so many people so quickly is simply beyond comprehension. We are in a state of grace. It has been a long journey through mountains of work, but the outcome, friendships, and experiences have been well worth the blood, sweat, and (sometimes pained) laughs! Motoe Haus: Rocking Ibiza. The vibe there is perfect. Are you a fan of social media, do you think it’s massively important now? SlingR: Social media can topple governments, so it’s proven to be wildly powerful and can surely facilitate maverick-musician success. When I was a kid, you’d play the guitar in a rock band and only dream of one day actually seeing the inside of a music studio or being on a stage. The unfortunate reality was that there was slim chance one could truly manifest a musical dream or destiny. Motoe Haus: The Internet, and social media, are in their infancies. Think about it – in the grand scheme of the history of mankind, the Internet just happened! It will grow ever-more potent while it rapidly changes our lives and, frankly, mankind itself. It has never been more possible to manifest one’s destiny. Social media also creates white noise, however, with staggering amounts of information continuously pumped out over the pipe. While social media enables independent talent to prosper outside of the traditional music infrastructure, musicians and artists must still be strategic. This is not new. Social media is a highly complex medium; artists must understand the nature of brand infiltration and the compounding nature of the internet and technology. An aspiring artist has never had a better chance of success, but you’ve got to have a brand and deeply understand the inner workings of social media. It will only grow more powerful. With which artist, would you like to swap the places for one day if you could? SlingR: Jim Morrison. Poet, revolutionary, and maverick. Morrison is my icon, my muse. Jim was a poet, first and foremost, and also a seeker. He was a true Renaissance man, genius, and maverick. No box exists to put him in... he stands alone. He sought truth, love, liberation, and joy. He also had an f-ing good time! Motoe Haus: Justin Beiber, clearly. ©DJ NEWS MAGAZINE
