For the most part, football teams make their biggest improvements between the first and second weeks of the season. Coaches have the opportunity to digest film from the first game and make adjustments during the week of practice leading up to the second game. Wilkes-Barre Area had a chance to make its jump last week when it beat Hazleton Area to improve to 2-0. Dallas will have the chance this week after beating Valley West in its season opener last week. Either way, Wilkes-Barre Area coach Ciro Cinti is hoping the Wolfpack will continue to make strides after winning its second consecutive game late in the fourth quarter. Dallas coach Rich Mannello is looking forward to seeing if the Mountaineers can continue the momentum they gained after falling behind to Valley West, 6-0, and then going on to a 48-12 victory. “We had better recognition of what the game plan is,” Cinti said of last week’s win over Hazleton Area. “They are buying into it a little bit more. We weren’t having as many silly mistakes as we did in the first game. We still have a long way to go.” The Mountaineers got off to a strange start in what is an abnormal season. Dallas had its first game of the season against Tunkhannock canceled due to issues with COVID-19. Last week, the team was forced to shut down practice two days, and crammed those two days into Thursday’s practice. “The kids were focused, especially not having the first game,” Mannello said. “That was tough. Then we combined two practices together. It didn’t surprise me they were able to stay focused. I was happy, not surprised.” With a lot of fresh faces getting their first taste of consistent varsity action, the Mountaineers played fast against Valley West. A new offensive line settled in nicely, and quarterback RJ Wren threw five touchdown passes. Running backs Jake DelGaudio and Parker Bolesta ran effectively, opening things up in the passing game. This week, the Mountaineers will face a team with as much speed as they have. More importantly, the Wolfpack takes advantage of every second they are presented with. In its season opener against Valley West, the Wolfpack kicked a field goal with :9.4 left for a 9-8 victory. Last week,

TUNKHANNOCK (0-1) at HAZLETON AREA (0-2)

MALEEK ROBINSON Wilkes-Barre Area, WR Leads the team in receptions with six for 71 yards and one touchdown. Is averaging 11.8 yards per catch.

When: Tonight, 7 Last meeting: Hazleton Area, 55-14 (2015) Series: Hazleton Area leads, 15-3 Coaches Corner — Tunkhannock: Mike Marabell (3rd season, 8-14); Hazleton Area: Dennis Buchman (1st season, 0-2) Scouting report: Tunkhannock played its first game of the year last week and had trouble taking care of the football. Too many turnovers cut short drives and took potential points off the board. Quarterback Jack Chilson threw for 245 yards and three touchdowns. Hazleton Area is 0-2 for the first time since 2016.

Game notes Last meeting: Dallas 35, Wilkes-Barre Area 7 (2019) Series history: Dallas leads, 1-0 COACHES CORNER Wilkes-Barre Area: Ciro Cinti (15th season, 2nd at Wilkes-Barre Area; 80-78 overall, 9-5 at Wilkes-Barre Area) Dallas: Rich Mannello (6th season, 42-30) quarterback Kam Taylor rushed for a touchdown with 40 seconds left. “It’s going to be a challenge,” Mannello said. “They are very good... 2-0 for a reason. They came back in the fourth quarter both games. That will tell you all you need to know about that group.” While he is happy with wins in the first two games, Cinti would not mind less drama going forward. “The bottom line is the end result,” Cinti said. “The kids don’t quit, that is a positive. It would be nice to start off stronger. We have had the lead this year for about 40 seconds in two games total. The kids do have confidence in themselves.”

When: Saturday, 2 Last meeting: Northwest, 53-7 (2007) Series: Northwest leads, 4-2 Coaches Corner — Northwest: Lon Hazlet (22nd season, 6th at Northwest; 119-101, 34-21); Bucktail: Jared Hurlbert (2nd season, 2-9) Scouting report: Northwest relies on the running game, averaging 7.7 yards per carry. George May leads the way with 286 yards and three touchdowns. He is averaging 8.4 yards per carry. Bucktail allowed 85 points through its first two games and has scored 39.

Hanover Area tight end Connor Hummer had four catches for 57 yards and a touchdown in a 42-25 loss to Windber last week.

ENGINE’S RUNNING

Season’s uncertainty doesn’t deter Hummer’s drive BY STEVE BENNETT STAFF WRITER

A few weeks off and then it was time to go. At least that is how Connor Hummer saw his original plan coming together. Hummer, a senior tight end/ linebacker at Hanover Area was going to take some time off following his last game as a junior, start to get ready for baseball season, but in the back of his mind, all the preparation was geared toward his senior year of football. That is when the conference was going to see a bigger, stronger and faster Hummer. Shedding blocks off the line of scrimmage to run a pass route. Staying in to block when a running play was called toward his side of the line. As far as the defensive side of the ball, that is where he expected to make the biggest impact. Whether it was clogging a lane, blitzing through a gap or pursuing the ball carrier, Hummer’s motor rarely stopped the way it was. But this year, well, it was going to be different. It was going to be his best one yet. And it almost never happened at all. Forget the saying to play every play as if it is your last. Hummer and the rest of the Hawks nearly didn’t have the opportunity for a first play in 2020 let alone a final one. “I was working out in January and February, I really felt I was getting stronger,” Hummer said. “Then it all went down hill in March. Nobody knew what was going on. I do have weights at my house, but I don’t have enough to keep progressing with my strength program. I mostly did core workouts and did a lot of running. Sometimes I would just do low weight and

Connor Hummer also is a first baseman and a pitcher for the Hawkeyes baseball team. increase the reps. It was difficult. I really wanted to start to up my max with my bend but I really couldn’t do that. It was frustrating.” That was just the beginning. When schools and workouts were shut down in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, Hummer, just like many others, thought everything would be figured out by the time the fall

sports season came around. While his workout routine was altered, he also missed his junior year of baseball where he is a pitcher and first baseman. “I had a lot of mixed emotions, I was thinking we were going to have a season,” Hummer said. “I had full confidence that when football hits it was all going to be normal. That wasn’t the case.”

Hanover Area created its retur n-to-play policy. The Hawks were back to voluntary summer workouts. Then, as quickly as it started, it was all shut down again. The school district had a COVID-19 issue. Voluntary workouts were on hold. The school board voted not to participate in extra curricular activities in the fall. “Just a lot of anger, that is the best way to describe it,” Hummer said. “The kids couldn’t express their thoughts. I knew people were going to fight. Deep down inside I was keeping up hope.” Two days after the board voted not to have sports, it decided to have a re-vote. The second vote went in the favor of the student-athletes. As quickly as Hummer’s senior season was taken away from him, it returned. “I was so excited when I found out they were going to vote again, I couldn’t explain it in words,” Hummer said. With lots of time to make up for and not a lot of time to get it all done, Hummer and the Hawks went back to work. His wo rk i n t h e f i l m r o o m increased. There was plenty of conditioning to get caught up on. But the craziness didn’t stop there. Hanover Area would not have a Week 1 opponent because Holy Redeemer was dealing with a COVID-19 issue. Then, Twin Valley was supposed to replace Holy Redeemer on the Hawks’ schedule. But Twin Valley had its own COVID-19 issues, so that game was out. A scrimmage with Pittston Area replaced a Week 1 regularseason game and then the Hawks opened the year last

week at home against Windber, a District 5 opponent that was also looking for a game. A four-year varsity starter, Hummer has grown into one of the top linebacker/tight end combinations in the conference, regardless of classification. His pass-catching ability is what separates him the most. He also has a nose for the football on defense. It helps that his father, Rickey, is in his second season as Hanover Area’s head coach. That gives Connor the opportunity to watch a lot of extra film with the coaching staff, and in a way, is an extension of the coaching staff out on the field. “I know I can definitely develop more,” Hummer said. “My football IQ can get better, but that is why I watch film with the coaches. I like to know what everyone is doing out on the field. I want to know where everyone else is supposed to be, so that way if they need some help out there, I can help them out.” Hummer certainly knows what that is all about. As a freshman, he wasn’t sure he was going to be a full-time starter. He spent more time on defense than offense in his freshman season, only because the offensive scheme at the time really didn’t account for much use of the tight end. “I was a little intimidated,” Hummer recalled of his freshman year. “I was smaller than I am now. It was a blast, there was nothing like it. There were definitely some ups and downs. I just went out there to have fun.” Contact the writer: sbennett@citizensvoice.com; 570 821-2062; @CVSteveBennett on Twitter
