STORY

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Teagan Wilk and the Bulldogs still have big goals this season BY STEVE BENNETT STAFF WRITER

Individual goals are nice. And when they are reached, that makes it even better. But what motivates Berwick’s Teagan Wilk is the overall team performance. Like when within the walls of Berwick’s Crispin Field, the Dawgs were shooting for an undefeated regular season, a district title and a trip to the state tournament. Anything less and Wilk would not consider this season a success. When the Dawgs lost to Valley View, 35-28, in Week 6, the dreams of an undefeated regular season went with it. The hopes of a district title and a trip to the state playoffs are still in play. “Our expectations were not met at all,” said Wilk, a senior defensive back considered the best all-around athlete in the Wyoming Valley Conference this year. “Our expectations were to be undefeated and we are not undefeated. I think we have been let down by our play so far. Our last game (a win over Crestwood), we had one of our worst games and still put up 42 points. We are not clicking yet.” As the Bulldogs take a 7-1 record into tonight’s game at undefeated Dallas, Wilk knows exactly what has been ailing the team up to this point. “We just make some stupid mistakes,” Wilk said. “Our defense shuts down a little bit. We didn’t get to our peak yet, which is good. We are just going to continue on to the playoffs.” As for the individual goals, Wilk checked a big box over the summer when he gave a verbal commitment to East Carolina University. It was always his dream to play Division I college football, and ECU afforded him the opportunity, as did several other schools across the country. Wilk said the ultimate decision came down to ECU and Iowa State. But ECU just felt right. Wilk is gearing up to graduate from Berwick in December to get a head start on his college career.

“Since I committed I was making sure everybody knows that I am not going to switch or de-commit,” Wilk said. “After I committed, it was very, very less stressful. The recruiting process was just so crazy. I am glad I got it over with. With graduating in December, it wasn’t so much that I wanted to focus on football. Just want to make sure nobody takes my spot.” Wilk literally picked off another one of his personal goals after transferring from Southern Columbia to Berwick after his freshman season. With five interceptions under his belt at Southern Columbia, the three-time all-state defensive back wanted to set the career interception record at Berwick. He figured with all the history surrounding the Berwick program, having his name mentioned with all the other greats would be a pretty cool thing to look back on. And as much of a perfectionist as he is, Wilk set the record this season. Wilk now has 17 career interceptions at Berwick and 22 for his overall career. Four of those interceptions have come this season, and he has returned two of them for touchdowns. “That is a goal for any defensive back out of Berwick,” Wilk said of the record. “For me, personally, that was one of my biggest goals. Especially this season having Bo Orlando here, it is quite an honor in my eyes. When you think of how many great athletes came through Berwick, the fact I hold a record is unbelievable to me.” Wilk said having Orlando around the program and in the halls of Berwick High School has been a positive influence for him. Orlando, a former Berwick and West Virginia great and NFL defensive back, is the school’s athletic director and spends some time around the football team. “Every single day we are doing something, not even football,” Wilk said. “Whether it is in school and it is just to talk about grades or anything. He is always a guy I can lean on. Nobody really understands the real Bo Orlando until you

hang out with him. He is a regular guy and helps you out. He is like a best friend.” And a friend that offers advice on what it is like playing at college football’s highest level. During the offseason, Wilk wanted to work on his footwork, break on the ball and his range. He says he is getting better in all three areas, but just wants to help this Berwick defense be the best it can be. And so far, so good. Berwick has the top-ranked defense in the WVC this year and plays its best in the biggest games. In the loss to Valley View, the tide turned on a Berwick fumble in a game the Dawgs were leading 28-14 at one point. But it is the overall speed and strength that makes this unit tick. Of course, the goal of being the best stands out as well. “Everybody on the defense wants to be on the defense,” Wilk said. “In the past couple of years I think we had people out there that did not necessarily want to be there. This year, everyone is in line and disciplined in their job. Everybody on the defense is a team player, nobody is selfish.” As for the move to Berwick from Southern Columbia, Wilk would do it all over again, despite the fact the Tigers are the odds-on favorite to win another state title. “It really has been unbelievable,” Wilk said. “I am so glad I moved here. It is kind of hard to explain. I know Southern Columbia has a tradition and winning experience. It was way different coming to Berwick and having teams you needed to study film on and have to show up on game day ready to play good teams every week. My first game at Berwick we played Hazleton Area. Damon Horton, David Smith and Adrian Otero are on the other side. It was a lot different for me. It’s been great.” Contact the writer: sbennett@citizensvoice.com; 570 821-2062; @CVSteveBennett on Twitter

WILKES-BARRE AREA DIARY

Nino Cinti Jr. is a senior at Coughlin and a defensive back/wide receiver for the Wilkes-Barre Area Wolfpack. He has agreed to chronicle what it is like to be a part of a first-year football program.

I

guess you can say this week was kind of déjà vu (Hazleton Area game). Definitely a tale of two halves. We played probably the worst first half we played all year defensively, it was ugly. Maybe it was the long bus ride or we were just emotionally spent after last week’s big rivalry win. Whatever it was, it was not good. Thankfully, our offense came to play right from the opening whistle. We gave up 24 points in the first half, but luckily, we scored 28. As a wise man told us at halftime, all we have to do is shut them out in the second

half and we win the game. So, as I said, we came out really flat and Wallenpaupack came to play. ENTRY 9 The Buckhorns returned the opening kick to our 30. Our defense played OK and held them to a field goal. They took a shot and onsidekicked it after that and recovered. A couple plays later, they had a long touchdown run. Just like that, we are down 10-0. That’s really not the way you want to start a game. We finally got the ball, and on the first play, Corey Brown busted one for about 60 yards. Yours truly was stride for stride with him running down the field blocking. That was the start of a

huge night for him, over 150 yards and three scores. The rest of the half went back and forth. Malachi Williams and Rafael McCoy had some huge catches for big yards. Like I said last week, we really are an unselfish team. Raf was racking up yards left and right all night, but didn’t get into the end zone. It didn’t even faze him. He was such a huge part of our win last Friday. Our offensive line really blocked well. They have gotten so much better since the beginning of the year. Coach Cliff Francis has done a good job with them, along with coach Tony Khalife and coach Hal Gabriel. Without those big guys up front, we don’t win games. So, earlier I said that we were spoken to at halftime. We were up 28-24, but you would think

we were down by three scores. It was my father who did most of the talking. I’ve said in other entries how I feel about our other coaches, but I’ve never really said what it’s like having my dad as a coach. He’s different, he’s passionate, he’s very matter of fact, he does not put anyone down. He will criticize you, but as soon as he is done, he will build you back up to the point of making you think you can take on the world. He was so disgusted at how we played that first half, and he let us know about it, BLUNTLY, and you know what? Everything he said was right. We weren’t playing up to our capabilities. We were cheating each other, and we weren’t giving our best effort. He asked if we “loved the game,” like really loved it. Were we willing to put our best foot forward and go

out and play like he knew we could play? Nobody hesitated, and we all said yes. He was quick to tell us, “you have two ears and one mouth for a reason.” He didn’t want a yes or no answer, he said, don’t talk, just listen. We looked at each other and that was it, the spark was lit and his words were the gas we needed to explode. One thing I will share with you is something he has told me a number of times as a kid, and he asked us at halftime: Did we know what the difference between “confidence” and “cockiness” is? Here is the difference, according to my dad: Cockiness is outward emotion. It’s talking to the opponent during the game, making a spectacle, bringing attention to yourself. Confidence is inward emotion, lining up across from someone and knowing no mat-

ter how hard that other person tries, they have no shot at defeating you because you have trained harder and are willing to do whatever it takes to win. You know all of this, but don’t say a word. After the game, you shake hands and go about your business. We shut them out in the second half and came away with a 45-24 win, and with that, we clinched the first district playoff berth in the history of the Wolfpack football program! Goal No. 1 achieved. On Saturday, we took a team trip down to Temple to see the game against Memphis. It’s a tradition coach Khalife and my dad wanted to start here for the Wolfpack, and it was awesome. Thank you to everyone who made it possible. Continues on PAGE G11

The Berwick senior helped her team win and hit a major career milestone on Thursday, scoring her 1,000th career point in a victory over Coughlin.

What does it mean to you to reach the 1,000-point mark? It’s been a goal since I was basically in the fourth grade. The chance to get it at home in front of my community, coaches, my family, it was really a life-changing experience. It’s one I’ll never forget. It really just means that I can accomplish anything, and that hard work pays off.

This season, you’re playing in a really tough division with five teams at 6-2 or better. What is it like to face such great competition like that? We play really good teams all the time, so it’s definitely important that we stay together as a team, work hard — practices are never easy, and we all just know that every team we face is never a pushover. We have to give it our all all the time. You’re the league’s leading scorer. What has been the key to your consistency this season? Putting extra time in. I stay after practice all the time and shoot around for 20 minutes. I also train with my personal trainer. Definitely, putting in the extra time has helped me this year.

How would you say your game has mo ost evolved since you started playing at this level? I used to depend mostly on the 3, and this year I’ve made it a point to get to the rim, fo oul shots, ball-handling. It’s really made me e a dynamic threat. Being a senior, what are you hoping to accomplish the rest of this season? I definitely want to get back to Mohegan Sun (Arena). We have some unfinished business there, made it there last year and came up short. I really do want to go back to the state playoffs; we lost third round. Kind of a bummer, but definittely farther than anyone thought we would b be.

The Dallas senior finished first at the Cliff Robbins Memorial race for the second straight year, coming in a full 11 seconds ahead of second place.

What was your approach going into this race since this is your final season? I definitely enjoyed (the race) through the first mile. I was running with smiles on my face, just knowing it’s the last time you’re going to have all those people gathered in one spot. Just enjoy it and try to see where I’m at. Were you happy with your

time? Did you meet the pace you were hoping for? I didn’t really feel too great in the morning. I think I ate a little too much at breakfast, but I felt like it was a good enough pace for me. I was content with my time. I mean, I probably could have went a little bit faster, but I had my gap and I was fine with that. How does this set you up for the rest of your season? I have about eight weeks until districts and states, so it just kind of gives me a starting point and gives me an idea that I do have a lot to work with. Because we really haven’t done anything hard. There were a lot of schools and

runners at this event.. How neat is it to season in a finish on top for the second s row? I kind of just appreciated everybody that was outt there. I value having the chance to be able g. The to do that kind of thing coaches, the support I get, the athletes around me for sure, because I wouldn’t be where I am today without the people that are surrounding me.

The Wyoming Seminary freshman swimmer set a pool record as part of the 200 medley relay and broke a school record in the 50 free.

What did it feel like to be part of a team and individual record in the same meet? It was unbelievable. I didn’t think I’d break a record so early in the season, and I just loved how everyone was congratulating me. It felt amazing.

When you’re in a race, can you tell when you’re swimming particularly fast or do you not really know until you see the time? It depends. If I felt like I was swimming slow, then I probably did. Sometimes, I do feel like I’m swimming fast; sometimes, I feel like I’m swimming slow. The Blue Knights are a competitive team every season. What’s it like to be a part of that as a freshman? It’s really interesting to know all of (my teammates), because I had

heard about them before I kknew them. I didn’t really know what to expect, but now that I’m friends with them I’m glad I can be a part of Wyoming Seminary. I really like it; the people are amazing. Do you have any goals or expectations for yourselff o this season? I really hope to place at districts. For more from the interview, ccheck out citizensvoice.com/aow.

The Wyoming Area sophomore defended her District 2 Class 2A singles title Friday, earning a return trip to the PIAA Tennis Championships next month.

Winning the district championship last year, did you feel any added pressure to come in and defend your title? There was a lot of pressure having to do it again. Since I won last year, people were expecting me to do it again this year. What’s your approach before playing your matches? I just go in very humble and stay focused on

THE CITIZENS’ VOICE

myself and not my opponent. The players from the Wyoming Valley Conference did pretty well at districts. Do you think the competition throughout the season helps? Yeah, playing each other during the season does help, and you recognize each other’s weaknesses and strengths that could help in future matches. What’s been the key to your success over the last two years? It would have to be all my coaches helping me and the hard work that goes in the offseason and all the extra tournaments I play. Do you think all those tournaments will help you at states?

The tournaments will help. The more matches you play, the more you develop your shots and they help you overall. What’s your mindset heading into states? I’m just trying to focus on taking it one match at a time. It’s totally different than districts. The competition is much more intense. For more from the interview, check out citizensvoice.com/aow.
