Talking tree stump is making the rounds A little fact I sometimes share about myself that seems tough for others to believe is that before I met my wife I was a relatively shy individual. Sure, if I suddenly somehow found myself in a conversation I was typically able to hold up my end of it; but could I just walk up to someone and start talking? No way! That would NEVER happen. Kristin, on the other hand, could introduce herself to a tree stump and walk away an hour later with a brandnew friend for life. That is exactly what happened when she spotted me taking root in the shadow of the dance floor at a crowded college hangout some 28 years ago. As in the case of many couples, Kristin and I have grown more alike in the ensuing years. She can now bait her own fishhook, ride a bicycle great distances, and tell the difference between a turkey vulture and a red-tailed hawk a mile-and-a-half away; and I ... well, I can actually speak without being spoken to!

Rarely have I been more dramatically reminded how “Kristin-like” I’ve become in this regard than just the other afternoon. Kristin and I had completed a newsletter for the retirement center where we split a part-time job. I distinctly recall hearing the phrase: “How long could it take, really?” On the designated evening of our walk-around, Kristin was waylaid by another commitment, so I set out on my own. One man, one evening, one stack of newsletters. When Kristin called to check on my progress I was headed for home.

“So, how did it go?” “Not nearly as quickly as I had hoped,” I said. “Really?” she said with a mix of startle and concern. “How far did you actually get?” “I got to Mrs. Miller’s place,” I said. “Oh, OK. Well, where did you start?” “I started at Mrs. Miller’s place.” “Wait. At which Mrs. Miller’s did you start and

at which did you stop?” — a question which might seem odd were we not in Wayne County, Ohio, where it would be entirely possible to visit 20, 30, even 50 different Mrs. Millers in a single evening. “The SAME Mrs.

Miller,” I said. “We got to talking about art, then music, then farming, then religion — we even talked about the shrubs beside her porch. The sun eventually went down so I packed it in after that.” “Well, aren’t you some-
