John & Annie Glenn Historic Site and Exploration Center 72 West Main Street, P.O. Box 107 New Concord, Ohio 43762 740-826-3305 www.johnglennhome.org History comes alive at the boyhood home of the first American to orbit Earth. Learn about life during the Great Depression and the Home Front during WWII through a captivating living history presentation on the main floor of the home. Tours also include an orientation film, narrated by Hugh Downs, and a guided tour of the top floor of the home. There you will see John’s bedroom as it was when he was growing up in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Memorabilia displayed include two of Senator Glenn’s military uniforms and the jumpsuit he wore after orbiting Earth in 1962. A model of the Friendship 7 space capsule demonstrates how far the U.S. space program has come in 50 years. The museum is operated by the John & Annie Glenn Museum Foundation which also operates the National Road/Zane Grey Museum. Just minutes from Guernsey County and only 5 miles apart, come and explore 200 years of American history at these two great sites! National Road/Zane Grey Museum 8850 East Pike Norwich, OH 43767 800-752-2602 or 740-826-3305 ohiohistory.org/nationalroad This museum offers three exhibit areas: The National Road – A 136’ diorama depicts the construction of the road, “America’s First Highway to the West”, at various stages and demonstrates the flood of immigration which followed it. An authentic Conestoga wagon is displayed as one of the examples of transportation which has traveled the road. A tribute to Zane Grey – This Zanesville-born author, nicknamed the “Father of the Adult Western”, wrote over 80 books and over 100 movies were produced, based on those books. His study has been recreated and includes many manuscripts and other memorabilia. Zanesville Art Pottery – This beautiful locally-produced pottery was only produced for about a 20-year period of time in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. This spectacular collection is unique for its artistry and glazes. The museum is owned by the Ohio Historical Society and managed by the John & Annie Glenn Museum Foundation, which also manages the John & Annie Glenn Historic Site. Penny Court Four generations of Boyd's have been making glass. Zack Boyd began working at Bernard C. Boyd Cambridge Glass Co. in 1901 at the age of 13. While he worked at a total of 26 glass factories, he always came back to Cambridge. His son, Bernard C, became a fulltime employee at Cambridge Glass at the age of 16, and made glass until he passed away at the age of 80. Bernard F., is the third generation and his son, John Bernard is now the fourth generation glass worker. Glassmaking, America's oldest industry, began more than 4000 years ago. To the delight of visitors and collectors, Boyd Glass still manufactures collectibles the old-fashioned way, with a man and a mould and not with an automated machine.

The landscape of rural Guernsey County appears as a patchwork of forested hills, open meadows, and misty valleys threaded by numerous streams. At the heart of this region is Salt Fork State Park. As Ohio’s largest state park, Salt Fork boasts recreational facilities to suit nearly every taste.

Enjoy fishing at this popular 3,500 acre Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) lake, or relax while sailing, waterskiing, or sun bathing on the sandy swimming beach. Seneca Lake area offers a more secluded retreat for camping or swimming in this scenic wonderland. Planned activities are available for campers and day users. Seneca Lake, largest of the MWCD lakes, is stocked with a variety of game fish. A full service marina provides boat and motor sales, service, rental, boating supplies, bait, tackle, and licenses. Hunters enjoy acres of land open during the season. The scenic, peaceful picnic areas include tables, grills, and shelters. Amenities include vacation cabins, camper cabins, log cabin nature center, special events, hiking trails, amphitheater, and playground.

Sizeable populations of largemouth bass, crappies, bluegills, walleyes, and muskellunge are present. Fishing is particularly good in the many embayment areas and along the artificial reef on the north branch of the lake. Hunting is permitted on designated areas. Check with Park or Wildlife Officers for delineation of these areas. Cottontail rabbit, gray and fox squirrels, deer, grouse, quail, woodchuck, raccoon, mink, muskrat, beaver, wild turkey, and waterfowl are abundant. An archery trail is available for bow hunting enthusiasts. An ODNR Division of Wildlife office is located near the main park entrance. The 2,500 foot beach is one of the largest inland beaches in Ohio. The beach house provides outdoor showers, lockers, toilets, and a snack bar. Two reservable picnic shelters are available for a fee.

Hunting, Fishing & Boating in Guernsey County Where to Hunt, Fish and Boat Guernsey County’s forested hills provide one of the top locations in Ohio for hunters, trappers and hikers to enjoy their sports. Our county ranked fifth in the state with respect to the number of deer taken during the 2012 hunting season: 6,111. From 2002 through 2012, 119 trophy bucks were registered in Ohio’s Buckeye Big Buck Club from Guernsey County – one of the top counties in the state. Guernsey County was second in the state with respect to the number of turkey kills reported in the 2013 spring turkey season: 541 – a 9% increase over 2012. In addition, according to Jason Lachic of ODNR’s Division of Watercraft, “We are very fortunate because Guernsey County is a real gem for boaters and anglers with its many beautiful lakes and streams.” Two Guernsey County lakes provided the fish that still hold the Ohio record for that species: Bluegill from Salt Fork Lake and Muskellunge from Piedmont Lake. Guernsey County alone is home to nine public areas for hunting, fishing, and boating. Each offers a unique experience for those seeking to enjoy the beauty and adventure offered by our forests, lakes, and streams. You may have access to private land or waters for hunting and fishing. An advantage to owning the land that you hunt on or the pond or lake that you fish in is that you may be exempt from obtaining a license or certain permits. Your spouse and children may also be exempt. If you don’t have access to private property, the following Guernsey County locations allow public hunting or fishing: Cambridge Reservoir: The reservoir and land surrounding it comprise 82 acres including 4 acres of water. There is no boat ramp, but small boats could be put in near the dam. Locations are available for shore fishing for largemouth bass, blue gills, crappies and channel catfish. Directions: Take Byesville Road south from St. Rt. 40/Wheeling Ave. Turn left on Reservoir Road.

According to Mike Edwards, Park Superintendant, “We stocked the pond a couple of years ago with a variety of fun to catch fish: catfish, bass, crappie and the like. We want fishermen to consider the pond ‘catch and release’ in order to preserve the fishing experience for all the kids in the community.” The pond is next to the 1100 block of McFarland Drive in Cambridge.

Who needs a license? Most of us do. However, those hunting on their own lands or fishing in private ponds may not need to purchase a hunting or fishing license. Persons taking frogs or turtles, even on private lands, must have a fishing license. Members of the U.S. Armed Forces who are on active duty may fish or hunt while on leave or furlough without a license but are required to purchase all relevant permits. Fishing licenses are not required for youth less than 16 years of age. Every year the State of Ohio designates free fishing days when all Ohio residents may fish without a license, so check the wildohio.com website for that information or pick up the “Ohio Fishing Regulations 2014-2015” pamphlet where fishing licenses are sold. Seniors are eligible for free or reduced cost hunting and fishing licenses. Persons who are disabled, former prisoners of war, and residents of state and county institutions are also eligible for free fishing licenses. Persons in these eligible groups must complete a written application to receive the free or reduced cost licenses. Purchase licenses from the Guernsey County locations above OR purchase licenses online at wildohio.com. Click on the link “Buy Your License” under the Wild Ohio Customer Center listing. In addition, last minute one- or three-day fishing licenses can be purchased by phone using a credit card. Calling 1-866-703-1928 between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and midnight will reach a live operator. The charge for this service is $5.50. Calling 1-855-765-3474 any time connects with an Interactive Voice Response System. Prior to the call, customers must obtain a 9-digit customer ID number from the Wild Ohio Customer Center at wildohio.com. The charge for this type of call is $3.25. Additional permits may be required of hunters and trappers as follows: •Deer hunters must purchase an either-sex deer permit or an antlerless deer permit •Guernsey County has both a spring and a fall wild turkey season. A permit is required for the season you hunt. •To hunt migratory waterfowl in Ohio, you must have an Ohio Wetlands Habitat Stamp endorsement as well as Harvest Information Program (HIP) certification. To complete the HIP certification, call 1-877-HIPOHIO (447-6446) and answer the survey questions. After the survey, you will be given a certification number which you write on your hunting license in the space provided. Hunters of Migratory Waterfowl are also required to have a signed federal Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp if older than age 16. These federal “duck stamps” are available at most post offices or online at duckstamp.com or store.usps.com. •Trappers must purchase a Fur-Taker Permit. Special beaver/river otter trapping permits are required depending on where you plan to hunt. All boats need to be registered, and many types of watercraft need to be titled. Except for canoes and kayaks, boats 14 feet long and up require a title. Outboard motorboats over 10 HP need to be titled. Personal watercraft/jet-skis also need to be titled. After purchasing a boat, the buyer completes the transfer by taking the title to a title office. In Guernsey County, the registration process is available at two locations: State of Ohio Watercraft Office 1225 Woodlawn Ave. Cambridge, Oh. 43725 Phone: 740-439-4076

Seneca Lake Marina 16592 Lashley Rd. Senecaville, Ohio 43780 Phone: 740-685-5831

Online renewals of boat registrations will be available starting in January 2014. Check on the watercraft.ohiodnr.gov website.

Gear & Accessories Gear and Accessories Hunting and Trapping Here’s hoping you look good in orange! Hunting any wild animal (except waterfowl) from ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset during the various deer gun and muzzleloader seasons is unlawful unless the hunter is wearing a visible orange coat, jacket or coveralls. This clothing is required when hunting on either public or private land and must either be solid hunter orange or camouflage hunter orange. Hunters are not allowed to carry more than one hunting implement when hunting deer. Ohio regulates the type of longbows, bows, crossbows, muzzle loading rifles, shotguns, and handguns that may be used to hunt deer. The allowable equipment is described in Ohio’s Hunting and Trapping Regulations and on wildohio.com. These sources also describe the equipment allowed when hunting wild turkey, various types of small game, and mourning doves as well as the type of traps used by trappers. Electronic callers may be used while hunting except when hunting migratory game birds and wild turkeys.

28

Archery anglers may use bows of any draw weight. Longbows may be used to take bullfrogs, green frogs, snapping and soft-shell turtles, and forage fish. Crossbows may be used to take forage fish. Floatline or jug fishing and trotlines are permitted in Seneca Lake south of St. Rt. 147, in Piedmont Lake in sections 11 and 12 of Kirkwood Township, and in Wills Creek Lake except in the area right in front of the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District boat launching. Additional information about the use of cast nets, minnow seines and dip nets can be found in Ohio Fishing Regulations published by the State Division of Wildlife or online at wildohio.com.

Fishing It’s recommended that fishermen use quality rods and reels –even for young fishermen. An inexpensive rod and reel is better than toy equipment. Use appropriate sized tackle. Smaller hooks, weights, and bobbers generally are more effective. Use live bait. Your bait shop can advise you of the best type

Boating

Besides the boat and its motor, sails, paddles or oars, the most important piece of equipment that all boaters are required to have is a personal flotation device (PFD) or lifejacket for each person on board, and it is best that everyone WEAR their life jacket. Powerboats and sailboats over 16 feet in length are also required to carry a throwable floating device such as a ring or cushion.

Be sure to check the label of the PFD to see that it is approved by the U.S. Coast Guard and that the life jacket is designed for the weight and chest size of the user. The label will also tell you what activities or type of person the life jacket is designed for. Some are not designed for weak swimmers. Water-skiers or others being towed while on other devices are also required to wear a PFD. The “Boat Operator’s Guide” published by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Watercraft spells out the requirements for fire extinguishers, visual distress signals, sound signaling devices, anchor and line, and lights as well as the type of ventilation, backfire flame arrestor, and muffling device required of certain power boats. Some powerboats are also required to have an engine cutoff switch lanyard, and various power boats and sail boats are required to post navigation rules and/ or placards about the disposal of garbage as well as prohibitions about the discharge of oil. Boats may need to carry a bucket or bailer which can serve as a portable means for discharging oily waste.

Mark Klies and Jason Latchic of the Division of Watercraft note that boaters will be safest if they are responsible about dressing appropriately. Jason reports, “If the temperature of the air and the temperature of the water add up to less than 125, dress warmly or have extra clothes. You may think that the air is warm, but if the water is cold and you fall in, you can quickly be a victim of hypothermia.” Casual/Formal/FR Wear! New Fall/Winter Inventory has Arrived! Stay Safe, Get Educated Get Educated! Most people have tons of fun when engaging in hunting, fishing, and boating activities. It’s a chance to test your skills, bond with family and friends, and get your exercise. However, we all hear of occasional tragedies that result in loss of life or disability. Keep yourself and your loved ones safe by making sure you know the best practices for your sport. And make sure you learn the techniques to make your hunt or fishing successful. There are a lot of local opportunities for learning your sport. Hunting and Trapping New hunters are required to successfully complete a hunter education course. The Ohio Division of Wildlife offers three types of hunter certification courses: instructor-led training, home-study courses, and proficiency testing for those ages 18 and older. Trappers must complete both a hunter education course and a trapper education course. These courses are offered free of charge. The instructor led courses last from 8 to 12 hours and occur in classrooms. Checking the website www.wildohio.com or calling 1-800 WILDLIFE (945-3543) provides information about the location and time of these courses. Locally the hunter courses are offered at Deerassic Park Education Center 14250 Cadiz Rd. (US 22) Cambridge, Ohio 43725 740-435-3335 or www.deerassic.com [Note: Deerassic Park Education Center offers a wide variety of classes for both children and adults. A popular activity for children that is held each year is the Kicking Bear One-on-One Archery Shoot and Campout. The Friday night/ all-day Saturday event focuses on teaching children basis archery skills but also offers exposure to other outdoor activities. The Kicking Bear event provides children with a mentoring relationship with willing adults who are involved in the outdoors. Ages 5 to 15 are the preferred ages for

this activity, but no one is turned away. According to Susan Jividen, Program Director, “We also can arrange archery, riflery, and canoeing instruction for any age group. Just give us a call.” Guernsey County Sportsmen for Conservation 2961 Meadow Rd. Cambridge, Ohio 43762 www.sportsmenforconservationguernseycountyohio.com Bob Heady of the Sportsmen for Conservation club notes, “We usually host Hunter Education classes four times a year, in March, September, and November. We also sponsor a youth shooting program. The classes teach kids to shoot pistols, rifles, and shotguns. This program usually takes place from May to August when the kids are out of school.” Both hunter and trapper education courses are available at Salt Fork Wildlife Area 67675 Salt Fork Headquarters Rd.
