WE ARE : PROUD

WELCOME

WELCOME TO PRIDE 2012 — WE ARE : PROUD WE ARE: PROUD is a vibrant celebration of the lives and talents of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) people. It promotes equality, for all, and spreads a positive message of acceptance in the biggest Pride festival across the whole South West. We invite everyone who values equality and diversity to join us. It’s been a tough year to make Pride happen; arts and cultural events across the country are feeling the squeeze but support for We Are: Proud has been overwhelming. Support from partners, celebrities, venues, individual donors and some creative thinking has helped make Pride happen. There is a real demand for Pride with hundreds of people coming forward to help make pride happen and be a part of the hottest ticket in town. We’re often asked ‘Is Pride still needed?’ Whilst it’s true that there have been huge strides towards equality we still see reports of homophobia and bullying in everyday life, schools, workplaces and social institutions which continue to marginalise LGBT people. For people who are out and proud, it’s still common to find ourselves in situations where we have to hide who we really are with colleagues at work or with families & friends. No-one should have cause to feel ashamed of who they are, or make tough decisions about being open about sexuality knowing it could have serious consequences to their relationships with families, friends or their jobs. So, Pride is the chance to celebrate, educate and engage with everyone, show that you are not alone and can feel proud.

2

Pride Day is free but costs thousands of pounds to organise. Please support the event and keep Pride a free, open event by making a donation. If everyone donated just £4 (a lot less than a cinema ticket) this would help towards covering the costs of the event. If you like what you see today then please feel free to donate more to help secure the future of Pride and the work of We Are: in Bristol. Why not get a Pride Supporter Wristband, offering free entry into evening events including the fantastic Pride takeover of the O2, discounts at the bars, food and market stalls on Pride Day. Most importantly you’re helping make Pride happen. We Are: is an organisation that works all year round with highly visible, engaging events that promote equality & acceptance, giving a voice and presence to those who might feel hidden or ignored and showcasing vibrant and talented communities. Equality and diversity are a gift and We Are: Proud is a chance for LGBT people, their friends, families and the whole of the South West to stand up and declare that they are proud of who they are and their loved ones. We cannot wait to welcome the thousands of people who join our celebrations across Pride Week including the South West’s largest, most colourful parade and the most visible Pride festival Bristol has ever seen. However you celebrate......

BE PROUD! Daryn J Carter

PARTNERS

We would like to thank all our Partners & Supporters. These proud partners provide significant in-kind or financial support to the festival. With careful planning and their help we’ve been able to make Pride free & open to everyone but we are still relying on your donations to help make Pride happen and to keep it free. To everyone… Thank you!

WE ARE : PROUD

WE ARE : PROUD SUPPORTERS STEPHEN FRY Sending all my love and support to Bristol Pride this year. Sorry I can’t be there but I’m sure it will be a fantastic event. Sometimes it can seem that for every step forward the LGBT community makes in terms of acceptance and equality, we are sent two steps back by the forces of bigotry and intolerance. We only have to look around the world to see how the twin evils of nationalism and distorted religion have focused on LGBT people as the target for their hate, just as the Jews were singled out in the 20s and 30s. If that sounds hysterical and exaggerated - remember the words of Edward Burke, that “for evil to flourish all that is required is for good men to do nothing”. Open pride, sane insistent debate and a refusal to accept a culture of bullying, taunting and hatred are as necessary now as they have ever been.

CATHERINE JOHNSON There’s a significant line in ‘Mamma Mia!’ - “There are all kinds of families” - says Harry, a gay man to Donna, a single mother. He’s telling her to be true to herself, to celebrate her own worth and most importantly, not to feel judged by other people. That’s the message of Bristol Pride and I am 100% behind their campaign for LGBT youth. Be happy!

MATT LUCAS As a former student who remembers going to Bristol Pride at the Watershed and watching Labi Siffre in 1995, I am delighted to know that the Pride event is still going strong, and I’m very happy to support it. I think I’ve still got that free condom somewhere, actually.

4

SURAN DICKSON Each and every one of us have the potential to be role models; simply by being respectful and considerate members of society who happen to be LGBT. By quietly acknowledging you have a same sex partner to the dry cleaner, hair dresser or anyone else you may encounter, you are educating society and therefore making a difference for those who come after you. A role model doesn’t need to successful, good looking or rich - a role model is simply someone who communicates to LGBT young people that sexuality or gender identity are NOT a barrier to happiness and fulfilment

GRAHAM NORTON I hope that everyone coming to Bristol Pride have a great day and an out and proud year

SIOBHAN FAHEY Walk tall and look the world in the eye. Set an example as you show others respect and kindness. There is nothing finer you can do in life. It will all come back to you if you do.

PROUDLY SPONSORED BY UWE & UNISON VENUE : Starting from Berkeley Square TIME : 11 am | PRICE : Free Join the Pride Parade as once again we laugh, dance, sing and stop traffic to declare We Are Here and We Are Proud. This year the Parade is more important than ever as we’ve seen service cuts and community events cancelled so this is your chance to come and make a stand for diversity & equality, for all. This is also our chance to show that prejudice has no place in our city and that it is our diversity and communities that make Bristol and the South West great. We welcome everyone that values equality to join us and celebrate diversity. Many people who may not be gay themselves may have some form of prejudice to overcome or know someone who is and want to show support. So even if you are not LGB or T Pride is the opportunity for everyone to feel included and feel proud. Proudly sponsored by UNISON, African Sambistas and the Dykes on Bikes will take the lead. Watch out for our usual surprises (some even to us), flair, fabulous drag queens and our 50-metre rainbow flag...oh yes and a fire engine and some giraffes. (Please bring an artefact or story, we’ll make sure you get it back after Pride Day!) Be sure to visit the Outstories stall in the Community Area on Pride Day and see what’s been collected. FILM TUESDAY 10 JULY

WERE THE WORLD MINE WE ARE: AND SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL, STRANGE BEDFELLOWS? PRESENT A NIGHT WITH THE BARD VENUE : CREATIVE COMMON TIME : 7:30 pm | PRICE : £6 (No one turned away for insufficient funds) Creative Common is a brand new space in the heart of Bristol, located next to Temple Meads Station this exciting big top will be home to the fairy kingdom…Do I entice you? Working with the Bristol Shakespeare festival who are passionate about bringing the freshest, most exciting productions of Shakespeare’s plays to Bristol we are proud to present a very special pop up performance followed by the award winning reworking of A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Were The World Mine. If you had a love-potion, who would you make fall madly in love with you? Timothy is openly gay, which doesn’t make him popular with his fellow classmates. His eccentric teacher casts him as Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and he discovers a secret recipe hidden in the script. Playfully he creates a new reality by turning much of his narrow-minded town gay, beginning with the rugby-jock of his dreams….but the course of true love never did run smooth. This event is supported by BYlaw, the social and networking group for gay professionals in the legal sector. We thank them for their continued support.
