£1.8M TO HELP JOBLESS YOUTH IN HEREFORDSHIRE This year is looking a lot brighter for young jobseekers in Herefordshire and Telford as the Big Lottery Fund announces the area is to receive £1.8m from Talent Match, its £100m Youth Unemployment Initiative. The Big Lottery Fund, the largest distributor of good cause money from the National Lottery, launched Talent Match, a scheme designed by young people for young people, with the aim of helping those aged 18-24 who are struggling the most to find career opportunities. The Fund has awarded hvoss (Herefordshire Voluntary Organisations Support Service) £1,816,501 to run the local Talent Match partnership, helping local young people who have been unemployed or out of education for at least 12 months.

Alex Guthrie, Amy Pegler, Josh Bolam, Louise Russell and Rachel Cresswell have all had their work bought by high-end fashion and textile designers. Elinor Bishop-Greenacre, Course Leader BA (Hons) Textile Design said: “Our students are making a real statement in the design world. The creative industries buck the trends in austerity and continue to bloom. With HCA being the only specialist arts college in the midlands, attracting students from all over the country and beyond, Hereford is becoming the place to be for aspiring and practicing artists and designers.” Visit the HCA BA (Hons) Textile Design blog to follow the students’ progress at www.hca.ac.uk/HCA-Live/ BATextileDesign. www.hca.ac.uk

Hereford Cathedral’s 1217 Magna Carta and 1215 King John’s Writ arrived in Houston Texas, to form the centrepiece of a new exhibition at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. In addition, the document is displayed alongside the only known surviving writ sent from King John at Runnymede proclaiming the creation of this historic charter. The Magna Carta is one of the most famous documents in history. It is considered the foundation of English common law and the inspiration for the American Constitution. Visitors who are unable to get as far as Houston should not be disappointed. The exhibition opening coincides with the launch of the Cathedral’s new interactive website, offering visitors across the world a chance to explore the events surrounding the creation of the Magna Carta and to purchase their own facsimile copies of the documents.

hvoss will now use the money to work up local solutions to a nationwide problem that threatens serious consequences for an entire generation of young people and the wider economy. www.hvoss.org.uk
