Kettle Valley Railway Trail Map Bike, hike, or horseback ride this popular stretch of history. The Kettle Valley Railway (KVR) is a part of our heritage. It provides outdoor recreation, stunning vistas and access to our wilderness ‘backyard’. This is also a multi-purpose portion of the Trans-Canada Trail. This gravel and hard dirt trail winds up and around Okanagan Lake, with outstanding views from any section of the trail. Use this color map to guide you along the trail from Chute Lake to Naramata. Access points are marked on this map. See the 12 Rock Ovens, Little Tunnel, or follow the trail into downtown Penticton. This trail continues on to Kelowna from Chute Lake. Gravel road throughout, steady but moderate incline from Penticton to Chute Lake, Pack lots of water and wear sturdy comfortable shoes. Take back country precautions. Stop to eat along the start of the route at any local restaurant or winery offering meals. (MAP SHOWN RIGHT)

Getting To Naramata Naramata welcomes you at the end of the road...just a short 15 minute drive North from Penticton, on the East side of Okanagan Lake, you’ll find Naramata at the end of the road.

Wineries

wine and dine

Naramata has many superb wineries to visit, (just follow the signs you’ll spot along the road) each in a beautiful setting, each offering a selection of award -winning wines. Some offer a wide array of full-bodied, barrel-aged reds, delightful whites, ice wines and even sparkling wines. Others are small boutique wineries where often the winemaker is the behind tasting room counter. Several wineries offer menus ranging from a light lunch or snack to gourmet dining.

The Naramata Bench is a major wine region in the Okanagan. If you are coming from the south it is the first region along Okanagan Lake. It also happens to be on the east side of the lake ( the main hightway runs along the west side). There is only one way in and one way out, you must go through the city of Pentiction to reach the bench. Thirty wineries call Naramata Bench their home. The rolling hills and variable soil types result in growing sites with unique microclimates that can be matched to the right varieties by experienced fruit growers. The eastern side of Lake Okanagan basks in warm sunny days resulting in a super long growing season. The moderating effects of the lake and gentle slopes minimize the incidence of frost and enable fruit-harvest at optimum maturity. Okanagan Lake tempers the climate, meaning no vine-killing winter temperatures, few late spring frosts and a very long autumn that brings grapes to optimal ripeness. Merlot and other Bordeaux reds grow well here, along with elegant Pinot Noir, peppery Syrah, full-flavoured Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Viognier.

Wineries Hillside Estate winery began planting their vineyards here in 1984. Hillside is the only BC winery producing Muscat Ottonel, a truly unique and unusual aromatic white wine. Okanagan – British Columbia’s fastest growing region, home to 200+ wineries. Located at the top edge of the Great Basin desert, part of interior BC. Within the Cascade Mountain Range’s rain shadow, with temperature moderation from Okanagan, Skaha, and Osoyoos Lakes running north to south. Frost however can be an issue. Soils are dominated by rich volcanic deposits, sand, and clay; irrigation is used. An extremely wide range of varieties have been planted in this relatively small wine growing region. Whites do exceptionally well and with proper vinification produce spectacular results especially in the Naramata Bench region. Riesling is exceptional. Other varieties yielding great results; gewürtztraminer, pinot gris (Nichol Vineyards), pinot blanc, chardonnay (Laughing Stock Vineyards), viogner (Van Westen).

History

Naramata

Founded in 1907 as a prime agricultural area, Naramata was also known in its early years as a cultural centre. People from across the Okanagan would arrive by boat for concerts, plays, operas and regattas. Paddlewheelers regularly stopped at the local wharf carrying freight and passengers up and down Okanagan Lake. In 1914, Naramata received a new link with the rest of Canada when the Kettle Valley Railway was completed on the hillside above the village. Due to the intense volume of rock work it gained the reputation as one of the most difficult stretches of KVR construction. Today, remnants of the KVR make for great exploration, such as the train tunnels, rock ovens, and the railway right-of-way which clings to the hillside high above Okanagan Lake and is now part of the Trans-Canada Trail. Naramata has been charming visitors since its early days. Village founder John Moore Robinson built the California -inspired Hotel Naramata more than 95 years ago. Today, the property has been refurbished and offers dining, accommodation and spa services with historical charm.

The Naramata Heritage Museum

Open May – October, Fri – Sun, 2:00 – 4:00 pm or by appointment: call Bert & Stu Berry. 250-496-5597. Exhibits display early days in Naramata: fruit growing, early farm equipment and artifacts, cultural history including Naramata’s Canadian Players theatre company of the 1930s, the still-active Naramata Community Choir and a fine collection of vintage photographs and documents.

Landmarks Giant’s Head

This is your focal point looking west across Okanagan Lake towards Summerland, and its sphinx-like pose is reminiscent of Egyptian monuments. Whether you see a giant’s head or a majestic sphinx, it is one of the most wonderful views around.

Kettle Valley Railway

The trail starts in Penticton, on Vancouver Hill, and crosses over Naramata Road just before Hillside Estate Winery. The incredibly scenic trail meanders through vineyards, orchards, across the McCullough Trestle and takes you north to Naramata. The trail follows along above Naramata Road all the way past Naramata Village to the Little Tunnel, on to the larger tunnels, all the way to Kelowna- across the sidehills, through forests-high above the valley floor. Hike, bike or cross-country ski this trail seasonally. Vehicles, horses and ATVs are permitted, but please respect on -foot traffic. Allow yourself a few hours to reach the first tunnel, visible from the village. Magnificent rockery and scenery will awe you on this pleasant grade, which all ages can easily access.

Manitou Park & Beach

Naramata

On the southside of the village, Manitou Park is a wonderful spot to relax or play. The park includes grassy areas, a playground, ball fields, picnic tables, changerooms, washrooms, horseshoe pitch, volleyball court and a family beach. Site of the Naramata August Faire (see events page for more information).

Naramata Village

Stroll elm-lined Robinson Avenue, between 1st and 4th Streets. It’s probably the quietest downtown you’ll ever encounter. There are a few shops, several restaurants, and some historic landmarks within a two block radius. Visit Wharf Park, former site of the old train dock, where lake barges once took on railcars laden with local fruit. Explore the Naramata Heritage Museum in the former firehall. Open May-October, Friday-Sunday midafternoons, museum displays depict the early days of the fruit industry and Naramata’s cultural activities.

The Labyrinth

p.44

Located at Naramata Centre, a conference and retreat facility affiliated with the United Church of Canada, the outdoor labyrinth is a large walking meditation circle built of grass and landscaping stone pathways. It is located beside the post and beam Chalmers Chapel, which is a quiet place for worship or meditation.

Landmarks

Naramata

The Little Tunnel

It’s actually not that small and from this spot Naramata spreads below you. One of the only tunnels on the historic Kettle Valley Railway that can be reached by car, the expansive southern view will thrill you as you enter the tunnel and reward you with a fabulous view to the north when you emerge from the other end.

The McCulloch Trestle

Built in 2002, the trestle along the KVR Trail, is reminiscent of the railway’s famous timber bridges. The trestle is a wonderful vantage point to view the valley and its vineyards. The trestle is about a 40 minute walk from downtown Penticton , and is located near several wineries. From the trestle, the trail heads north to Little Tunnel (13 kilometres) and beyond.

Vineyards

With the rolling hills, meandering country roads, and shimmering lake there is little doubt that Naramata has the prettiest vineyard landscape in North America.

Wharf Park

This is also the original site of the Old Dock at Mill Bay. Browse through photos at the Museum or the Heritage Inn. You will see pictures of the wharf that serviced the fruit industry and community for decades. This old dock has been replaced and the park beautified with pathways. Great views of serene Mill Bay and Okanagan Lake looking north. This is also the site of the Community Market on Wednesday afternoons. See attached map sections for more details on how to find attraction sites. Area mountain biking and hiking maps available at: www.rdos.bc.ca
