Updating to Windows 10

Windows 10’s May 2020 Update is finally here. However, it may take several weeks (or even months!) before Windows Update offers the update on your system. “Why can it take so long?” many of my customers have asked.

The main reason that Microsoft rolls out these updates slowly and to a limited number of PCs at first is that it needs to test how the rollout is going. If there are suddenly blue screens, performance bugs, or other problems, Microsoft can “pause” the rollout and fix the bugs before resuming it. Therefore, if the update has not appeared in Windows Update on your PC yet, it’s probably because Microsoft isn’t yet confident that it will work perfectly with your PC.

So how do you know if your PC has received the update? Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on your PC. Click “Check for Updates” and if you see the words “Feature update to Windows 10, version 2004”, click “Download and install” under it to install the update.

If you just see a “You’re up to date” message without any information about the new version of Windows 10, Microsoft hasn’t made it available to your PC yet.

Do please remember that before performing any updates to your PC, we really do advise that you back up your PC. This can be done using “file backup”, which allows you to copy of all the files stored on your PC onto an external hard drive. Please see our article from several weeks ago for guidance on how to do this (also available on our website: www.diamondbyte. co.uk). We would also advise delaying the update if you are working on something important just in case the update goes wrong.

DO PLEASE REMEMBER THAT BEFORE PERFORMING ANY UPDATES TO YOUR PC, WE REALLY DO ADVISE THAT YOU BACK UP YOUR PC

If you run into a bug or another problem with the update, it is possible to roll back to your old version of Windows 10, provided you do it within the first ten days after upgrading as Windows 10 will remove the required files to free up disk space on your PC. To do this, go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery. Under “Go back to the previous version of Windows 10,” click “Get started” and click through the wizard that appears. If you don’t see this option here, you, unfortunately, can’t go back to your previous version of Windows 10 because its files have been removed from your PC.
