Peter Jackman wants a roll of honour to be put up in memory of servicemen who attended the town’s Hereward School and died in or shortly after the Second World War. The 89-year-old would like their sacrifice recognised on a plaque placed at the town’s Neale-Wade Academy where one already honours pupils of the town’s former Grammar School. Peter – who in 2018 successfully campaigned for a memorial to be reinstated to Doctor William Frith who helped many poor families in the town in the 1930s – is now looking to raise funds for the initiative. He said: “I am concerned that each year the pupils of the Grammar School who gave their lives in the Second World War are honoured during a Remembrance service at the Neale-Wade but not those who attended the Hereward School. “I have contacted some Hereward old boys, Neale-Wade governors and also principal Jason Wing who were all very supportive of the idea and am now just awaiting the official go-ahead.” Peter said that anyone who donates to the appeal would receive a booklet outlining the names of the former Hereward schoolboys and including their service details and burial sites. This special booklet’s covers have been painted by local artist John Abbott. He added: “I knew some of the men and their families and think this would be a fitting tribute. I also think that by highlighting the stories of these men it will make studying the history of the war more personal for Neale-Wade pupils as it would give them a direct link to the town.

“I have received quotes for an oak plaque and also for the booklet and £400 of donations should be sufficient to get the project completed. If there is any surplus, I would like it to go to Neale-Wade pupils to help in their studies.” If you would like to donate to this worthy cause please contact Peter or his wife Gena at 21 Waterside Gardens, March PE15 8RW.
