Choir Camp 2014
22nd Annual Diocesan Choir Camp, Brenham, TX July 6-12, 2014 After 22 years as the Diocesan Choir Camp, we are excited to expand the scope of our summer event to be “Music Camp,” including private and group instrumental lessons. The camp is open to all those who love music in rising grades 3-8. Our Camp staff has already included Dr. Wendy Bergin, a member of St. Peter’s, Brenham and a professional orchestra conductor and flute and recorder teacher. Wendy has offered recorder lessons to our choristers as part of the camp for the past few years.
This year, instrumentalists can enroll for an instrumental track that will combine with our sung offerings at the end of the week. Last year’s team of Garmon Ashby of Episcopal High School, Jackson Hearn of Good Shepherd, Kingwood and Linda Patterson of St. Peter’s, Brenham will lead the week’s activities. Swimming, pottery, art lessons, games and field trips for outreach and recreation will be included in the camp schedule. No previous choral experience is necessary for the choral track, but experienced choristers will be challenged
by optional descants and part singing. Recorder players and experienced instrumentalists are welcome, as well as those who would like to learn to play the recorder. From the Chair Welcome, Spring, after a long, cold winter! On February 1st, we had the joy of celebrating Candlemas at Christ Church Cathedral with Jackson Hearn conducting combined Youth Choirs in a lovely liturgy after a day of laughter, food and fun rehearsals. The Cathedral was also the place of two liturgies for beloved friends and mentors, Dr. Clyde Holloway and Dr. Robert B. Lynn. In this issue, we are including their obituaries. Our deepest sympathy goes to their families, friends and former students. Once again, diocesan musicians are grateful for the excellent work of Canon Bob Simpson, organist Bruce Power and the fantastic Cathedral Choir. I have several things to recommend to you: 1. The Association of Anglican Musicians’ Conference in Washington, DC this summer Non-members can attend the conference, and this
year’s conference includes some wonderful services in the Washington D.C. area, including the National Cathedral and VTS.
2. Brothers from the Taize Community (France) will be visiting Texas soon. Special events are being planned in both Austin and Houston. Youth are invited to attend all parts of their visit; adults over 35 are welcome to attend the Prayer Services. I have visited the Taize Community in France three times, and I believe that Taize music is worth studying and learning for your parish. It is well-written and

allows involvement of cantors, wind, brass and string instruments. I hope that you will be able to experience the music while it is in our area. 3. If you’re not using Liturgical Music by Daw and Pavlechko for planning your worship services and choir anthems, I highly recommend the 3-volume set. Another of my favorite things is the St. James Music Press $139 yearly subscription. Unlimited downloads of music for choirs of all ages and sizes are covered by the subscription. A new publication: “Servant Leadership for Musicians.” This is a revision of the “Conflict and Closure” publication, and it is for dealing with conflict and stress in our parishes. 6. We will be getting ready earlier this year for our Diocesan (Adult) Choral Festival, so that we can work with noted conductor Dr. Marilyn Keiser. Please make plans to join us on October 4-5, 2014! 7. Please help us spread the word about our “Music Camp.” After 22 years of Diocesan Choir Camp, we are expanding our scope to include instrumental music, too. Adding instruments will allow us to include non-singing jr. high students, and have instrumental music in our closing events. 8. I’ll be speaking to the “Little Church Club” in April about resources for the small church. Our group of qualified, experienced musicians stands ready to help. Diocesan Adult Choral Festival Saturday, October 04, 2014, 10:00 AM - Sunday, October 05, 2014, 7:00 PM Combined choirs of parishes in our Diocese will gather to sing with guest conductor Dr. Marilyn Keiser. A Saturday rehearsal is held for Houston-area churches. Participants in the Houston area on Sunday morning have the option of singing at the Cathedral’s 11 AM Service. On Sunday afternoon at 3 PM, all participants will gather for rehearsal with Dr. Keiser. The 6 PM Festival Service is free and open to all to enjoy the choral music.

Robert Burgess Lynn Born in Colorado Springs on St. Cecilia’s day in 1930, passed away February 11, 2014 A musicologist, organist, and harpsichordist, Robert’s BA degree (Phi Beta Kappa) was from Colorado College, followed by an MA in Organ from the Juilliard School of Music, and a PhD in Musicology from Indiana University.
He was a Fellow of the American Guild of Organists. A Danforth Associate and Fulbright Scholar, he studied organ in Denmark with Finn
Viderø. His studies in Denmark were postponed for several days when the family’s ship, the Stockholm, collided with the Andrea Doria, which then sank. Robert taught for many years at Allegheny College and later as Professor of Musicology at the University of Houston where he also directed the Collegium Musicum and the Graduate Studies Program. Named Professor Emeritus at the Moores School of Music in 1997, he enjoyed visiting professorships at Rice University, Indiana University, and the University of Siegen. From 1982 to 2004, he was the founding Director of the Houston Bach Choir and Orchestra at Christ the King Lutheran Church. Robert served as Director of Music and Organist at St. Francis Episcopal Church for 25 years, and also as interim organist at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church. Many other Episcopal and Lutheran churches were blessed by his talents. Robert was a kind, quiet, brilliant person who loved words. His dry sense of humor lives on in his
children. He loved hiking his Colorado mountains, reading books in Danish and German, and traveling in Europe where he leaves many friends. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Geraldine and Harold Lynn, and his brother, Harold Lynn. He is survived by his wife, Elaine Steele Lynn, with whom he shared a hospital nursery at birth, and who was his sweetheart since 9th grade, including 62 years of marriage. Their children are Michael Lynn of Wellington, OH; Lisa Bailey of Denison, TX and husband Alvin; William Lynn of Houston and wife Nelda; and Sarah Elaine Lynn of Houston. Grandchildren who treasure their memories are: Rachel E. and Sarah E. Lynn; Taylor Bailey Durr and Christopher E. Bailey; and Jeffrey A. and Robert E. L. Lynn. Robert always enjoyed the presence of children, including great- grandchildren Eric and Nicky Lynn. A Memorial Service was held at Christ Church Cathedral on March 8, 2014.
Job Posting St James’ Episcopal Church in Taylor seeks an organist/pianist to play for our weekly 10:00 am Eucharist service, to assist head of congregation in selecting music, and to lead a small choir that sings at one service per month. There are occasional opportunities to participate in special services or rehearsals for special services, depending on the organist’s availability. The church is over 100 years old with a tracker action pipe organ built by George Jardine and Sons in New York in about 1890 along traditional lines of European pipe organs. The organ has sixteen ranks of pipes which were rebuilt in the 1950’s with new pipes from Holland installed. The church has a special fund for maintenance of the organ. In addition, the church has a new Yamaha Clavinova CLP-470 digital piano in the worship space. The average attendance for the service is 33 adults and children. Compensation is negotiable. Clyde Holloway Memorial “Clyde Holloway, the Herbert S. Autrey Professor Emeritus of Organ at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, passed away this past December. He was 77 years old.
and as Organist and Choirmaster from 1984–1993. Clyde was appointed Honorary Lay Canon and Organist-Choirmaster Emeritus by Bishop Benitez. Holloway earned degrees from the University of Oklahoma and Union Theological Seminary. He came to prominence in 1964 when he won the National Young Artists Competition of the American Guild of Organists in Philadelphia. This achievement inaugurated a distinguished concert career throughout the United States where he performed under the auspices of Karen McFarlane Artists. He performed for numerous National and Regional Conventions of the American Guild of Organists and appeared in recital in Mexico City, the West Indies and Europe.
Holloway served as a faculty member at the Shepherd School from 1977 until his retirement in 2010. In addition to establishing the organ program, he has served as Chairman of the Keyboard Department and Director of Graduate Studies. Holloway also served at Christ Church Cathedral Houston as Cathedral Organist from 1977–1984
Renowned as a gifted educator, Holloway served on the Committee for Professional Education of the American Guild of Organists and addressed two biennial conferences of the National Conference on Organ Pedagogy, founded in 1982. He served as a member of the jury for numerous competitions including the Concours de Europe, the Fort Wayne Competition, The Music Teachers
National Association Competition, the National Young Artists Competition of The American Guild of Organists and the Grand Prix de Chartes. In 1994 he was invited to perform for the Bicentennial Festival of the celebrated Clicquot organ in the Cathedral of Poitiers, France, and to serve as a member of the jury for the international competition held at the end of the ten-day festival. A memorial service for Dr. Holloway was held at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue, Houston, Texas on Saturday, January 18, at 11 a.m. The service was preceded by organ music at 10:30 a.m., followed by a reception in Reynolds Hall. Memorial contributions may be made to the Christ Church Cathedral Endowment Organ Fund, 1117 Texas Avenue, Houston, Texas 77002; or to the Clyde Holloway Scholarship in Organ at The Shepherd School of Music, Rice University, P.O.
