Local History

Winter Park Resort

Turns

75 This Season >> Skiers line up for the Hughes T-Bar in the 1940s.

By Tim Nicklas

On December 4, 1913, a snowstorm of epic proportions

descended upon Denver. The blizzard would go down in history as the biggest of all time in the Rocky Mountain metropolis. All transportation in the city came to a standstill as trains, buggies, and streetcars stalled against the deep snow. Nobody was going anywhere for the duration of the storm, save for one person, Karl Howelson. Howelson, dubbed the Flying Norwegian, skied the quiet city streets of Denver, as onlookers gazed at the ease of which he

glided on top of the snow. One of those onlookers was George Cranmer. Upon seeing Howelson, Cranmer approached him with curiosity and asked the Norwegian to teach him. Howelson, who was rising to fame as the “Father of Skiing in Colorado,” took off his skis and handed them to Cranmer, who would go on to become the “Father of Winter Park.” From that chance meeting of the two men, George Cranmer would one day be inspired to build Winter Park Resort.

In return for his support for the reelection of Mayor Ben Stapleton, George Cranmer was appointed Denver’s Director of Parks and Improvements. One of his goals was to expand the city’s mountain parks system. Among his major achievements was the acquisition and development of Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater. Among his more lofty ambitions was to develop a winter sports playground for the people of Denver. >> George Cranmer ice skating in the 1940s.

Local History On March 28, 1937, a Denver Post headline proclaimed, “Plans Are Made to Mine Colorado’s White Gold: Cranmer Plans Winter Sports Site Near City.” At that very same time, Graeme McGowan and the Colorado Arlberg Club were devising a plan to build infrastructure for a ski area at West Portal, and Cranmer was weighing between two sites for Denver’s ski area – Jones Pass, or West Portal. McGowan had submitted a detailed report to the US Forest Service in 1936 recommending West Portal for snow sports development. This greatly influenced Cranmer to lean toward West Portal, plus the Arlberg Club members had already raised some of the funds needed to build a rope tow. What clinched it for Cranmer though was the presence of the railroad. With trains coming through the Moffat Tunnel at West Portal, transportation of skiers from Denver was made easy.

>> Colorado Arlberg Club members on top of the Mary Jane Trail after skinning up in the 1930s.

Cranmer made a deal with the Colorado Arlberg Club: if they handed over the funds already raised to install a rope tow at West Portal to the City of Denver, he would increase the fundraising to install more equipment and facilities. With the Arlberg Club donation as a foundation, Cranmer received grants from the federal government. Beginning in 1938, Civilian Conservation Corps workers, Forest Service employees, Arlberg Club members and other volunteers cleared trails for the soon-to-be opened ski park.

Following the installation of Colorado’s first T-bar, the placements of a warming house and bunkhouse, and the clearing of several trails, Denver’s Winter Sports Park was ready to open on January 28, 1940. That fateful day in December 1913, when Karl Howelson taught George Cranmer to ski had come full circle. Since Winter Park’s opening in 1940, many generations from around the world have come and enjoyed its playful slopes for the past 75 years. ❄ >> Colorado Arlberg Club member, Frank Ashley, skiing the Mary Jane Trail, 1930s.

Winter Park

Town of Winter Park Winter Park is a genuine Colorado mountain town. Take a stroll down main street, and you’ll know you are someplace special. This town has less traffic, noise and crowds than other mountain resort towns, as well as the status of the highest incorporated town in the country. Surrounded by peaks that tower over 13,000 feet, Winter Park sparkles with fresh white snow after a big storm! One of the town’s coolest winter hangouts for kids is the Snow Zone playground and sledding hill at Winter Park’s Hideaway Park – right in the

center of town. There’s usually plenty of snow for making snowmen, and parents love it because it’s free! Winter Park is the place to be when the sun goes down, with a variety of restaurants to please every taste and live music to dance away whatever energy is left after a day playing outside at high altitude. And if you love to shop, Winter Park has it all – ski and snowboard equipment, warm parkas, cool souvenirs, waterproof footwear, fine wine, fashionable sportswear, local art and more!

>> Cooper Creek Square Shopping >> photo courtesy of Cooper Creek Square

Fun Facts & Trivia About Winter Park: • The town population was 662 at the 2000 Census, although tourists and seasonal workers significantly increase the population. In 2013 it was still only 950 people! • Although the town center is at about 9,000 feet, Winter Park became the highest incorporated US town after the July 2006 annexation of 5,214 acres near the resort that climb to over 12,000 feet. • Winter Park began as two small settlements, Old Town and Hideaway Park. Old Town came into existence in the early 1920s because of the construction taking place on the Moffat Tunnel. Winter 2014-15 • Dine & Play

Fraser

Town of Fraser Known as the “Icebox of the Nation,” the average year-round temperature in Fraser is only 38 degrees. This historic town was established in1905 in anticipation of the arrival of the Moffat Railroad, and many of the original buildings still remain. Fraser was the center of the timber industry at the turn of the century, but today it is visited by seekers of fresh, white, powdery snow and seemingly endless trails – 600 miles that lead into the National Forest. In the winter, those trails can be accessed with a snowmobile, snowshoes or Nordic skis. Treat the family to a snowmobile tour, dog sled or sleigh ride, and then warm up with a hot bowl of soup at one of the local restaurants. At night, you can take the whole family to the tubing hill, hockey rink or the rec center, or relax inside with a movie and bowling at The Foundry.

Fun Facts & Trivia: • Both Fraser and International Falls, Minnesota have claimed the title “Icebox of the Nation,” which has caused a 50-year conflict! • Fraser has an Amtrak Station. • An episode of “Mysteries of the Museum” was filmed Cozen Musuem. • Fraser is the only town in Grand County to approve the sale of recreational marijuana.

Lake Granby is a few miles north of town, with world-class ice fishing and spectacular views, and Granby Ranch offers great downhill and Nordic skiing trails for families. YMCA/Snow 27th Annual

Grand Lake

Town of Grand Lake You may have seen this historic town in photographs or passed through while visiting Rocky Mountain National Park, but until you’ve parked your car and walked down the frontier boardwalks of its main street, you haven’t experienced Grand Lake. Perched on the shores of the largest and deepest natural lake in Colorado, Grand Lake rewards visitors with views of Rocky Mountain National Park on three sides, moose and other wildlife casually ambling down Grand Avenue and many, many trails leading into the

white wilderness. You can also find restaurants, unique shops and rowdy Old West bars along Grand Avenue with endless snowmobiling areas and ice fishing on the three lakes – Grand Lake, Shadow Mountain Reservoir and Lake Granby. Winter Carnival, in early February, is also a must-see, with snow sculptures and bed races down Grand Avenue! Celebrate the100th Anniversary of Rocky Mountain National Park with special events throughout the year.

>> Both Winter Park Resort or Ski Granby Ranch offer diverse terrain from beginner to expert for skiing and riding!

A World of Things To Do! Grand County has over 1,800 square miles of snow-covered wilderness to explore, and beautiful weather to go along with it! Skiers and snowboarders head for Winter Park and Mary Jane – a world-class highalpine experience complete with abovetreeline trails as well as challenging moguls, terrain parks and a Superpipe. But some families and novices prefer Ski Granby Ranch, where the trails are more suited to the beginner/ intermediate level and the lodge and facilities offer a smaller, more intimate experience with occasional night skiing events. With an average of 255 sunny days per year and sparkling, fresh snow, this Dog Sled Rides of Winter Park

Everyone will be bragging about this adventure for a long time! Enjoy fun guides, fabulous dogs and stunning scenery. 970.726.8326 /1410 CR 5, Fraser dogsledridesofwinterpark.com

county screams for you to get outside! Try Nordic skiing, snowshoeing or ice fishing. You may see a moose or fox, and you’re bound to experience something that has become hard to find in today’s world – peace and quiet. Some prefer to get into the heart of the wilderness a bit faster. Renting a snowmobile will help you access more terrain and climb to higher vistas. Tubing and ice skating are also great family activities that put some pink on the cheeks. Thumb through our guide and plan your days and nights in Grand County so you don’t leave regretting the things you could have done! ❄

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing, Ski Touring & Groomed Trails By Cindy Kleh Get out and have fun! When the snow is deep and fresh, even your backyard can be good for snowshoeing or cross-country ski touring! The beauty is exploring and making your own tracks. In the backcountry when trails are shared between snowshoers and skiers, it is good etiquette for snowshoers to stay to the side of existing Nordic tracks. To really get away into nature and see winter wildlife, Dine & Play suggests the following Grand County trails, all of which are dog-friendly except RMNP: • Little Vasquez Creek is a well-known cross-country trail (snowshoers welcome, too) that leads uphill into the National Forest southwest of Winter Park. From the town of Winter Park, head southwest on Vasquez Road until it turns into a dirt road. (Parking along side the road.) • Grand Park maintains a scenic Nordic/snowshoe trail behind the Rec Center in Fraser that winds through hills of aspen groves. (Park behind Rec Center.) • Elk Creek offers meadows and trails winding up into the National Forest. Turn at the stoplight in Fraser and head southwest on County Road 72 past the tubing hills. (Park at end of the plowed road to access several trailheads.)

48

www.DineAndPlayGrand.com

Snowshoe tips: • Wear sturdy snow boots • Use poles for balance • Bring water & food • Wear layers for changing temps • Make sure the snowshoes are fastened snugly • Bring a camera & map

• Dead Horse Loop and St. Louis Creek trails are located off of County Road 73 in the Fraser Experimental Forest, offering great scenery and serenity. (Park at the USFS gate or the St. Louis Creek campground.) • The Fraser to Granby Trail is a long trip in its entirety, but the section near Snow Mountain Ranch, YMCA of the Rockies is especially scenic. Park at the YMCA entrance parking lot and head south towards Fraser, or cross Highway 40 using the underpass and head toward Granby.

Nordic Skiing

>> Classic skiing at Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic Center. >> photo by Carter Photographics

• Doe Creek is a quiet valley protected from wind that usually has very few visitors. The trailhead is located off of County Road 6 (leading to Arapahoe Bay and Monarch Lake near Grand Lake), and there are four different trails with a loop option.

freestylers to explore through the woods and meadows of the Upper Colorado River (just follow your tracks back to your car and you won’t get lost). Ranger-led beginner and intermediate snowshoe tours are available.

• The Nordic Centers of Grand County: Devil’s Thumb, Grand Lake, and Snow Mountain Ranch, YMCA, all provide well-maintained Nordic and snowshoe trails, some of which are dogfriendly. These systems are groomed for both classic and skating, and there is a trail fee. All areas have a rental shop with equipment. Snow Mountain has a lighted loop for night skiing.

Be Prepared

• Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) is snowmobile and dog free, with several skied-in Nordic trails and unlimited virgin powder for snowshoe

Bring extra water, trail snacks, layered clothing, sunscreen and sunglasses when heading into the wilderness to ski or snowshoe. Check the weather and avalanche forecast for the area ahead of time, and avoid going on long treks alone. Let someone know where you will be and what time to expect you back. Grand County’s beautiful backcountry can also be deadly! For a detailed map of Grand County trails, visit headwaterstrails.com.❄ Winter 2014-15 • Dine & Play

Snowmobiling

Put Power in Your World! By Joe Kelley To people throughout the United States, Grand County means snowmobiling. From annual vacationers to second homeowners to those who were born and raised here, snowmobiles provide fun and adventure in this mountain environment. Grand County offers up some of the best snowmobile riding opportunities in Colorado! Easy-access trails for two-seater touring sleds exist in a number of areas, and riders can experience scenic trails on Corona Pass, the Grand Lake trail system, Church Park, Meadow Creek Reservoir and more. Throughout the county, there are easyto-access systems that a new rider, a couple or a family can navigate without needing to venture too far off the trail. Those new to the sport will be surprised at how much fun it is. The thing that so many people miss – including Coloradoans who haven’t ventured into the winter backcountry – is the wonderland that exists after a few miles of riding from the trailhead. Even on the more used trail systems, the scenery is a snowcovered postcard with you in it! And further off the beaten path, the vastness of winter in the Rocky Mountains inspires awe. Turn off the machines for lunch, and the quiet is almost audible.

50

www.DineAndPlayGrand.com

And then there’s the adventure for those with backcountry experience, high-level riding skills and long-track sleds: powder that is neckdeep – as far as the eye can see!; technical tree riding from meadow to meadow; and a day of fun and camaraderie with friends. It’s a great physical experience, from snow-overthe-hood riding to smooth powder turns to the heart-pounding rush of a steep climb. Proper avalanche awareness and training is required! Adventurous skiers and boarders love finding “steep and deep” on sleds, too! A dependable, budget-priced mountain sled can cover enough distance in a day to add numerous runs to your backcountry day without a crazy strain on the budget (just your thighs!). Trail sleds can also whisk a skier or rider up sections of groomed trails, accessing great tree runs that end up on a lower section of the same trail – easy and fun. Snowmobiling in Grand County expands the winter experience. From mild to wild, sleds can lead to a favorite ice fishing hole, the holy grail of backcountry skiing or riding, a picture-perfect lunch spot on top of the world with family and friends, or a mad moto adventure with a group of wild-eyed adrenaline junkies. You choose. ❄

Dog Sledding

Dog Sledding Delights All Ages By Cindy Kleh

>>Dog Sled Rides of Winter Park are exciting! >> Carter Photographics

Have you ever dreamed of being on a dog sled cruising through the wintery woods, pulled along through the trees by a team of energetic huskies? There are about 15 Colorado towns with dog sled touring companies, and Winter Park happens to have one of them. Dog Sled Rides of Winter Park offers sled rides (by reservation only) all winter long on a scenic, private trail system near Fraser. Owners Tracie and Jeff Martin both grew up with lots of dogs. Jeff graduated from Cal Tech with a plan for the corporate world, but he became dissatisfied with the “suit” lifestyle. While vacationing in Aspen, he met a dog sled musher, and after a game of pool and a long talk about lifestyles, Jeff decided to try out for a musher position. Being athletic and strong, he had the perfect qualifications for dog mushing. He spent two arduous years in mushing training at Krabloonik in Aspen, where he met Tracie. The two married in 1998, purchasing Dog Sled Rides of Winter Park in 2000. Now their two young daughters, ages three and six, are growing up learning the art of animal husbandry and mushing.

The Martins love to share the romance of dog sledding in a snowy mountain setting by helping plan engagement proposals at a scenic spot along the tour. Dog Sled Rides of Winter Park “employs” about 80 dogs – each one with a name, a distinct personality and a little birthday celebration each year. But not all of them are active, working dogs. Each year there are wonderful dogs up for adoption. Active, confident and loving people make the right type of owner. On the 45-minute sled ride, the mushers and dogs do all of the work. Passengers should dress warmly, sit back under a blanket and enjoy the thrill of the ride! Tracie attests that the dogs really love to pull a sled – to have a job. “The only thing we make them do is stop. We don’t have to tell them to go!” Each sled holds up to 3 people if one person is under 48 inches tall and the total weight is less than 350lbs. Safety is important for all, including the dogs. The Martins feel proud to be realizing their dream of running a successful, outdoor adventure business. “We both have a zest for this type of hard, physical work and we love sled dogs,” says Tracie. “It’s not a glamorous life, but it’s authentic and exciting.” ❄ Winter 2014-15 • Dine & Play

Family Fun

>> You can build a snowman anywhere! It just takes snow and some good imagination!

Kids of all ages know how to have fun naturally, but getting them to agree on the same definition of fun can be a challenge, especially when adults get added to the equation. It sometimes seems like an impossible task to get the whole family on the same page, enjoying one activity together ... unless you happen to be in Grand County, where the thrill of all of those electronic games and TV shows pale in comparison to real life. Activities that draw families closer include racing each other on the many tubing hills of Winter Park and Fraser; dog sledding or snowmobiling through

the powder; snuggling under a warm blanket on a sleigh while draft horses pull you to a campfire with hot chocolate; even ice skating, ski biking, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing under a full moon! When tweens and teens feel the need to get away from the family, they can hang out at the Grand Park Community Rec Center shooting hoops or using the climbing wall, or they can hit the movie theater/bowling alley in Fraser for pizza, popcorn and fun. The resort also offers broomball games, an arcade and Kids’ Night Out – a free babysitting service for parents who want to dine and shop at the Village. ❄

Custom Ski Boots vs Generic Boxed Boots Ski Boots are the most important piece of your ski equipment! You can read all the ski boot reviews, listen to your friends’ advice or demo every model of boot on the market and still have no idea as to what the best fitting boots for your feet are. The frustration might tempt you to drop skiing and join a bowling league or bridge club! Manufacturers design ski boots to fit all types of feet, while a custom ski boot is made specifically for your feet. Therefore, you have two choices: 1) Try every boot, brand and model and spend a lifetime and a lot of money painfully figuring out that no standard boots are made for your feet; 2) Go see the best-known boot fitter in your area and realize how many years of great skiing you have wasted not getting custom-fit boots in the first place! Combine comfort, performance and warmth and get your feet properly canted, aligned and fine-tuned. You will have more control, making you a better skier. You will
