ASK YOUR MAMA

The Langston Hughes Project is a multimedia concert performance of Langston Hughes’s kaleidoscopic jazz poem suite. Ask Your Mama is Hughes’s homage in verse and music to the struggle for artistic and social freedom at home and abroad at the beginning of the 1960s. It is a twelve-part epic poem which Hughes scored with musical cues drawn from blues and Dixieland, gospel songs, boogie woogie, bebop and progressive jazz, Latin “cha cha” and Afro-Cuban mambo music, German lieder, Jewish liturgy, West Indian calypso, and African drumming -- a creative masterwork left unperformed at his death.

Advertise with DCA Our Audience Dillard Center for the Arts will attract an estimated 10,000 ticketed guest this season. Our audience features adult professionals including parents, students, education professionals and arts patrons from all areas of Broward County. Corporate/Business and community support is invaluable to our program, as it provides the future artist of tomorrow the opportunity to gain the types of extra ordinary experiences that students with a deep passion for studying at a Visual & Performing Arts Magnet school should receive. Cash and in-kind support from sponsors helps to bridge the gap between what the public school system can provide and the actual resources our students need to be prepared for success either in college or in the professional world.
