It all started with an abscess last year in October. Antibiotics and hospitalisation didn’t clear it up and in February they got the shocking diagnosis – cancer. He was treated with chemotherapy, which has made him very sick. He has battled a number of infections and often needs platelet transfusions. The family was hoping that after he had completed the course of chemotherapy, he would be in remission, but sadly this was not to be. The only hope for Christo for a permanent cure is a stem cell bone marrow transplant. The cost of finding a donor can run into the hundreds of thousands which this family does not have. All Hands On Dec Friends wants to help Christo to raise the money so that he can beat this ugly monster in his blood and go on to live a healthy cancer-free life and fulfil all his dreams. Chery South Africa is set to make an even bigger impact on the local market with the launch of its new J1 hatchback. The range consists of two models; the J1 1.3 TE and the top-of-the-line J1 1.3TX. Both vehicles are equipped with power steering, air conditioning, alloy wheels, as well as critical safety items such as dual airbags and ABS with electronic brake distribution. The Chery J1 is the first global vehicle from the Chinese automaker and is aimed at providing stylish, affordable motoring to consumers in Europe, North America, Asia and of course, South Africa. Design input has been received from a number of the world’s leading automotive design companies in order to ensure the Chery J1 sets a new standard for those who need to conquer the urban jungle, but who wish to make the most of their leisure time. The 5-seater J1 has something of a crossover look, with its sporty presence and a high stance. It may be a high level compact car, but it has been designed to provide maximum interior and luggage space, with a wheelbase of 2 390mm and a height of 1 564mm, balancing style with practicality and versatility. The Chery J1 features a brand new fuel injected 1.3-litre petrol engine, uniquely developed by Chery that will beat off many of its key rivals when it comes to power and fuel economy. The new 4-cylinder Acteco powerplant, which is Euro III compliant, provides 61kW at 6 000r/min and 114Nm of torque between 3 800 and 4 500r/min, while also ensuring less visits to the petrol pump with an average fuel consumption figure of just 6.7/100km. To make the most of the engine’s capabilities, the front-wheel driven J1 range is equipped with a 5speed manual transmission. Large angel eye headlamps light your way ahead at night, while safety is bolstered further by the inclusion of ABS with EBD, dual airbags, side impact protection bars and high mounted brake light, many of which are simply not usually available in this class of vehicle. Reverse park control is available as standard on the TX-derivative. The Chery J1 range has a 3-year/ 100 000km warranty. Service intervals are at 15 000 km and the range has a 3-year/ 75 000 km service plan as standard. pistachios keep heart disease at bay A handful of pistachio nuts a day can reduce your chances of developing heart disease, according to a team of American researchers. The scientists have found that pistachios bring down levels of “bad” cholesterol in the blood, as they contain an antioxidant called lutein, also found in fruit and leafy green veg, which cuts the build-up of bad cholesterol in the arteries. Pistachios are very healthy in moderation. A handful a day is very easily incorpo-rated into the diet and they are less calorific than peanuts as you have to take the shell off. To reach the conclusion, scientists at Pennsylvania State University and Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation chose 28 adults whose average bad cholesterol level was “borderline high”. They first gave them a diet rich in cheese, oil and butter. Then they switched to low-fat diets before incorporating pistachios. Bad cholesterol levels dropped by 12 per cent when two daily servings of pistachios were eaten. Good cholesterol levels did not change. The study has been published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

pretty as a picture - frame it ... All too often an outstanding image or painting is rendered dull and boring when partnered with a poor choice of mass produced frame. As in the case of antique furniture, a good picture frame should have a "patina", allowing the light to reflect off the frame in a most pleasant and warm way. Choose a profile that will suit the type of image, for example, when framing black and white photographs or similar images, most framers tend to use a simple flat black frame and whilst this may look attractive initially (and is often cost-effective) flat moldings tend to be exactly that, "flat", and don't reflect light in an interesting way. The frame should have a sense of history. Don't be scared of hanging pictures together in groups - you would be surprised how wonderful a set six or eight images in identical
frames can look. We are fortunate enough, in South Africa, to have large walls on which to hang pictures and there is nothing worse than seeing a single picture, too small for the wall and inevitably hung at the incorrect height. How to hang your pictures.....as a rule, the upper third of the picture should be at eye-level and no higher. There is nothing worse than pictures hung to high or, when in groups, hung too far apart. Again, as a general rule, pictures should be no further apart than the width of the moulding and in fact where a number of pictures in the same frame are grouped together try a gap of about 80% of the moulding width. Let your more important pictures breath. Important art works or framed prints should be hung in proper space. The importance of proper lighting for those important pictures cannot be underestimated.

garage or carport A few days a go a friend asked my husband, what will be the best and cheapest, garage or carport? When choosing a garage or carport the amount of space that you have available and what you want to use it for will play a major part in your decision. You could build a garage from the ground up using brick and mortar or you could construct a prefabricated garage. Retrofitting a garage to your house is a more expensive option and there are a number of carport and garage options available.
If you have access and the space constructing a garage in the back garden is a good option. This location is more convenient for storage and more flexible for future conversion to another use, such as a granny flat. The general rule for building a garage - you need 3.6m x 7.2m of space per car. A double garage, therefore, should be 7.2m x 7.2m. If you are going to use your garage as a living space or are turning an existing garage into an additional room, then you’ll need to consider things like insulation and waterproofing.
