and by the start of SandFest on Saturday had completed their masterpieces. The fine sand of Port Aransas was shoveled, compacted then sculpted with special sets of tools. According to Lisa Shelton of Texas SandFest, 18 master sculptors and five advanced sculptors put their tools to work.

According to Travel Channel, the top 10 tools for sand sculpting are bottomless bucket, shovel, square trowel, pool trowel, palette knife, knife, popsicle stick, spoon, paint brush and a straw. To ensure the sculpture remains in tack through the competition, sculptors spray pieces with a special glue mixture. “It’s safe to say tens of thousands attended this year’s SandFest,” said Shelton. This year’s winners are: 2018 Master Solo Winners First place and People’s Choice Award Winner – Delayne Corbett, Saraphim Second place – Brian Turnbough, Handmade Third place – Carl Jara 2018 Master Duo First Place – Abe Waterman and Morgan Rudluff, Ball and Chain Second place – Lucinda Wierenga and Emerson Schreiner Third place – Jon Woodworth and Heather Woodworth, The Choices We Make People’s Choice – Water McDonald and Christy Atkinson, Beware of Cat Advanced Winners First Place – Bruce Peck People’s Choice – Marc Mangia, Casa Mangia Master winner Corbett began sculpting at the age of 19. A resident of Vancouver, Canada, Corbett is an ice, snow and sand sculptor. He also carves stone and is a stonemason. According to his website, www.delayne.ca, Corbett spends the spring and fall carving stone, winter with ice and snow and summer “has me traveling around creating sand monuments between my masonry jobs.” Master Duo team of Waterman and Rudluff
