Gary Radvansky Potentate: Illustrious Sir, Gary Radvansky Potentate of Alzafar Shriners

Potentate Gary Radvansky Five years ago I was writing my first Achbar article trying to figure out what to write. Now I sit here preparing my last article as your Potentate and I have so many things to say that I don’t know where to begin. Let’s start with the most humbling, appreciative “THANK YOU” I have ever expressed. During my Oriental Guide year, I was so honored with the overwhelmingly amount of support Cheryl and I had, from our Children’s events, to the OG Roundtable, and even our project of painting the Shrine’s curbs & ballroom. Every success is because of you; the nobles and families. I knew then that this journey would be a joy to say the least. As the journey continued, I realized that no matter how big the task, or how difficult the topic, I knew that it would always work out because of the circle of support Cheryl and I had. When I first became a Divan member, many Past Potentates gave me advice which I am so thankful for. As I reflect on those conversations, one piece of advice not only confused me, but opened my eyes. It was “You will have friends at the beginning of this journey and different friends at the end.” In maintaining the success of any business, change is inevitable, and even though not everyone agreed, decisions were made for the betterment of our Shrine as voted by majority. In the beginning, I could see how that statement might be true. However, now that I’m approaching the end of this journey, not only did friendships grow, but the support did as well. The expansion of a new family is overwhelming. The one person I am most thankful for is my beautiful wife Cheryl. Without this woman by my side there is no way I could have done anything. Imagine meeting that special someone and only after a few months asking them to focus their next five years on not just us but joining a Divan. What’s a Divan you ask? I think you get the picture. We were married when I was Oriental Guide and YES we are still married here at the end. Her commitment to our Shrine and our hospitals is next to none. She is my rock, my partner, my best friend and most importantly, always my First Lady. Thank you….I love you Baby! Last night was our 2018 elections and I would like to congratulate the entire Divan for moving up and to Robert Norman for entering the first step in a long career. When the meeting was over, I shook hands and talked with nobles about this journey. It was humbling, but so fulfilling at the same time. Someone asked me, “Has it struck you yet?”… Naa, not really. Then it did. As I was walking away, over my shoulder, I watched the 2018 Divan, in a circle, drinking a toast together. It was a proud moment because I know what’s coming. I look forward to calling my right hand man Illustrious Sir. Jason Triggs has done an excellent job and has been an awesome supporter since he became our Oriental Guide. I knew from day one he was going to be a great Chief Rabban and he was. Thank you Jason and Good luck. I know you will be an outstanding Potentate. My brother Divan members are a strong team and there are great things coming our way. So my thought to you right now is bitter sweet. Allowing me to be on your Divan and serve as your Potentate has been one of the most humbling and gratifying experiences of my life. As with anything in life, it can feel overwhelming and stressful at times. However, gaining the support of friends & family has been nothing short of rewarding. Remember our motto this year? Fraternity, Family and Fun. Working Together Making a Difference. understatement. It was not because of me or you……..it was because of our family! AND I THANK YOU!

Wow what an

Cheryl and I want to thank you for all you do for our children and our Shrine. What a blessed 2017! I can’t thank you enough for your support and it has been an honor and privilege to serve you. “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” ~Winnie the Pooh May God bless you all!

Potentate Elect Jason Triggs

Lady Cynthia and I, and our family, cannot express enough how deeply we are humbled and thankful for the trust and honor the Nobles of Alzafar have bestowed on us by electing me to be your Potentate and Imperial Representative for 2018. It has been a long journey to get to this point, but a journey we have cherished every step of the way. The overwhelming support we have received from everyone during our previous 4 years on the Divan has made all the sacrifices worthwhile and has been the driving force for us to do all we can to serve and repay you for the opportunities you have given us. As I was seeking out the office of Oriental Guide 4 years ago and standing before the Nobility as my nomination was being read, many thoughts were running through my head. I knew I was ready to pursue the challenges ahead, but did I have the confidence of the Nobility? Did they believe in me enough to give me a chance to prove to them I had what it took to lead them? As my name was announced as the winner of the election, I was immediately overcome with joy as I knew I indeed had a very special opportunity that was awarded to me thanks to the Nobility of Alzafar. As I started the journey I did not know many of you. But during my time on the Divan you all have become like family to me. When I need an ear to talk to, there is always someone there. If I need help, it’s just a phone call away no matter what the circumstance is. The bonds we all share together truly make for a family like atmosphere. Hugs are given instead of handshakes, our Ladies and children are encouraged to participate in what we do, and the genuine concern we have when we speak to each other makes Alzafar the envy of all other Shrines. Congratulations to Oriental Guide Elect, Noble Robert Norman, and his Lady Tiffany, as well as all the other officers and your Ladies on your re-elections. I truly owe the Nobles of Alzafar a great deal of gratitude for assembling a great group of men such as this and allowing me to serve alongside of them on the Divan during the upcoming year. Every New Year brings a new set of challenges. With the continuity this team has established with each other, there is no doubt in my mind and I fully trust in them this team will be able to rise to and overcome every challenge that awaits during the upcoming year and will continue to represent Alzafar in a way everyone can be proud of. Lastly, Lady Cynthia and I express our sincerest thank you to Illustrious Sir, Gary Radvansky, and First Lady, Cheryl, for not only your service this year, but throughout the previous 5 years. During the P4K event in 2013, Gary, then Oriental Guide, made the statement to me “It would make me proud if you were my Chief Rabban when I’m Potentate”. That was the final push for me in my decision to seek election on the Divan. And I am so glad I did. Throughout the years the leadership and guidance Gary and Lady Cheryl gave us was immeasurable and has played a key role in the successes Lady Cynthia and I have had over the years. Many molds were broken thanks to them and the path they paved for us has made us even better prepared in taking over the reins of Alzafar. The voids Gary and Lady Cheryl leave behind will be hard to overcome. But Lady Cynthia and I take comfort in knowing that although our time together on the Divan has come to an end, the memories and the special bond between us that has been created as a result will forever live on. Congratulations Illustrious Sir, Gary Radvansky, and First Lady, Cheryl, on all your accomplishments. You will be sorely missed.

ASSISANT RABBAN ELECT Marty Bartlett Is this year really over? That went by really quick. Well, if I am elected into the Assistant Rabban position by now, my focus will be on raising money for our hospitals all year. We are planning a few collection days, a big Hospital Gala, IHOP Day, and some additional fund raisers to bring in funds for the best charity in the world. The first major one will be IHOP day on February 27th. While IHOP Day is a little later this year, the collection boxes are already up at our IHOP's. Please go by and visit your local IHOP now to encourage the staff to assist us with our fundraiser over the next two months. Also start planning on who can work each shift for your specific location that day. It has been my pleasure serving you as High Priest and Prophet this past year. I continue to be impressed by all of the people that jump in and help at each event and all of the people who are so dedicated at raising funds for the best charity in the world. I hope that you have each had a magical Christmas with your family and always keep the “reason for the season” at the forefront of your thoughts. Looking forward to an exciting new year with each of you!

HIGH PRIEST & PROPHET ELECT Travis Elmendorf I have learned much and enjoyed the time more. It has been a pleasure and quite the honor representing the Nobility of Alzafar in the capacity of the Oriental Guide. I would like to begin by congratulating the members of the 2018 Divan, may the year be blessed under their leadership. Also, congratulations are in order, for all the officers elected to head up the Units and Clubs. A Noble deed it is to serve the Shrine and one another, here’s to a brilliant year. Illustrious Gary Radvansky… it has been an amazing year working alongside you; Thank you for your commitment and leadership. The Fun was evident throughout the year and at times very contagious. Thank you and Lady Cheryl for all you have done for the Shrine Family as well as our Fraternity. The New Year has begun, let us not leave anyone behind. As our membership has grown we cannot slow the pace. Reach out and engage the newest of our Nobles or those that might have might misplaced the directions to our beloved Shrine. Our future relies upon the continued growth of our membership. We all have a hand in it. To a prosperous and fun filled 2018

Happy Holidays to all. I hope you and your families truly had a blessed holiday season. Wow, what a year we just finished. 2017 went by so fast it’s unbelievable. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for the support and kind comments throughout the year. While 2017 was filled with a lot of challenges and hard work, I had a lot of fun and thoroughly enjoyed working with the best Divan group in our philanthropy. My hope when the year began was, that my objectives for 2017, when accomplished, would demonstrate that it made a difference that I was here at all. I truly hope that you feel this was the case. Please continue to support your local Blue Lodges, each other and your 2018 Divan as we embark on another exciting and challenging year for Alzafar. As always, I am proud and humbled to have had the opportunity to serve you in 2017. A wise man once said, ““No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care” Theodore Roosevelt

Happy New Year to all our Alzafar Nobles. It is hard to believe we have turned another calendar page and 2018 is now here. With the New Year comes a new face to the Divan. A new Oriental Guide will be welcomed to the group. He will have a hard time trying to follow in Travis Elmendorf’s footsteps. Travis did a great job raising the bar of the Oriental Guide to new heights. Alzafar has been truly blessed with talented and educated men willing to donate their time and talents to our Fraternity. As you know we had three qualified Nobles seeking the office and unfortunately only one gets the position this year. If you reelected Ron Trine, the Treasurer, and I, as Recorder, I would like to say thank you. If you did not elect us I would like to say “thank you”. Seriously it has been an honor to serve you as Recorder. My plan has always been to serve in this position for another 4 years. After that it will become renewable and convertible each year. My Christmas Hope List is simple this year. We are in need of a sofa bed for Alzafar #1 at Camp. This is the unit that we rent out for $50 per night. I would be willing to barter a weekend in the Cabin for a decent sofa bed that you might not need anymore. Where else can you hike 320 acres with Guadalupe river access? After raising my two kids at Camp, we finally sold our cabin a few years ago, but I will always love this unique asset which is owned by all the Nobles of Alzafar. We are working on advertising rates for our Beautiful Achbar monthly news letter. If you own a business, please consider advertising in the Achbar. 100% of the money helps us offset the cost to produce our monthly newsletter. Don’t forget Units/Clubs, please turn in your articles to Carol no later than the 10th of each month. Medical Equipment is available to the Nobles and their family. Just tell us what you need and use it for as long as need it. There is not charge we just appreciate you being a Noble. My grandson, Peanut, and I look forward to another great year at Alzafar filled with lots of kids parties. Before I know it my Son, Neil, and my Grandson Peanut will be wearing the Red Fez. Maybe a few more years for Peanut as he will only turn 3 in March. Alzafar Rocks and so do you my fellow Nobles. alzafarrecorder@gmail.com 210-496-1625 x 203

Mike “Mustache” Calloway Shriner of the Month Congratulations to Noble Mike Calloway for being selected as Alzafar’s Shriner of the Month for December. Anyone meeting Noble Calloway for the first time gets the first impression of him that screams he must be a Shriner. Other than his physical appearance, his upbeat demeanor and positive attitude toward everything always has a way to bring smiles to the faces of everyone he comes in contact with. Noble Calloway is another one of Alzafar’s worker bees, working behind the scenes while seeking no attention, and most times he’s the guy who does the jobs nobody else wants to do. Noble Calloway is very dedicated to our Fraternity, not only helping where he can during a fundraising or social event, but also in practicing one of the fundamental lessons we were all taught as Masons, the lesson of charity. Last month there was a Noble who was experiencing difficulties with his vehicle. Come to find out, the vehicle was beyond repair, leaving him stranded with no transportation. And because the unexpected loss was so sudden, he was left in a very tough financial situation. It just so happened that Noble Calloway had a vehicle he was trying to sell. Once a few members of the NEMNUF unit learned about the tough position the Noble was in, they approached Noble Calloway to purchase the vehicle from him. After he learned who the vehicle was being bought for, he refused payment for his vehicle and donated it to the Noble in need. Noble Calloway not only puts his all into everything he does as a Shriner, but has also never forgotten the lessons Masonry has taught us and practices them every day. Because of Brothers like him and the selfless actions he demonstrates, we can all hang our heads high knowing that we belong to the greatest fraternity in the world.

ALZAFAR SENIORS By: Roger Hopkins The Alzafar Seniors met on a cold and rainy Pearl Harbor Day. This month we met in the Roustabouts Room since we been having such good luck getting renters into the Shrine. Noble John Lorch became our newest member and brought his family. The meeting was opened by our Vice President, Noble Earl “Tex” Phillips followed by an invocation from our Chaplain, Noble Donald Garrido, PP. We then rendered honors to the American and Texas flags and went into a great lunch from Grady’s consisting of turkey, ham and dressing with all the fixings. We had some great appetizers and deserts provided by wives and Grady’s. Our business meeting consisted of the recognition of Anniversaries/Birthdays and moved on the process of nominating, electing, and installing our new officers for 2018. They are: Earl “Tex” Phillips, President; Daniel Coburn, Vice President; Joe Estlack, Treasurer; Donald Garrido, Chaplain and Roger Hopkins, Secretary. Following the installation, we had a group photo of all in attendance (hopefully this is included with the article). After the taking of pictures, Noble Garrido gave a Benediction and our Vice President closed the meeting. We look forward to seeing many of you at our next meeting scheduled to take place in the Parlors on January 3rd. Until then, we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

HOSPITAL CORPS By: Roger Hopkins The Hospital Corp met on November 17th with 11 members and 3 guests. The meeting was gaveled to order by our Commander, Noble Don Inselmann who then led us in the pledge to the national and state flags. Noble Ed Tuma provided an invocation and then the Commander recognized Past Commanders and reviewed the business of the various committees. Robert Norman (candidate for OG), addressed the group and encouraged them to be at the next stated meeting and vote. After some great snacks we moved into the business meeting which consisted of a report from the nominating committee and then the election of our new officers for 2018. The election was conducted and our new leaders are: Commander: Noble Gordon McKinnie, Vice Commander: Noble William “Bill” Liles, and Secretary/Treasurer: Noble Bob Ashley. Under New Business we reviewed the parade schedule, and everyone was encouraged to be available on the 9th for our final parade of the year. Commander Elect distributed invitations to his Installation Dinner at 6 PM on December the 19th. The Nobles then agreed to maintain the current dues structure, meeting time and place and to table any discussion of the SOP’s until copies are available to each member to review. The business meeting was closed by a benediction from Noble Tuma. The meeting was followed by more great snacks. We look to those of you in our Shrine that are as committed as we are to come out and support our mission. We’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

LAREDO SHRINE CLUB By: Miguel Inclan The Laredo Shrine Club has been extremely active in the cross-border transportation of patients for both Texas hospitals. We unfortunately had a tragic outcome in one case that made headlines in the area which highlighted the need to follow burn safety recommendations especially in this time of increased risk. The Club held the election of officers this past Wednesday. The new officers will lead the club in its efforts to raise funds for the Hospital Transportation Fund and work on cross-border transportation of patients as well as increasing the profile of Shriners in Laredo. They are: President: Travis Cabello, 1st VP: Jose Ayala, 2nd VP: Enrique Ceballos, Jr. Past President, Secretary: Chris Turner and Treasurer: Kenn Schmies. Installation of Officers TBD. The Washington's Birthday Parade is coming up in February and we are working to make it a memorable visit for all the Nobles to make the trip every year. More details will be coming in the next edition of the Achbar. Lastly, this is my last Achbar article as an officer of the Laredo Shrine Club. It was my privilege to serve the people of Northern Mexico and South Texas through the Laredo Shrine Club but look forward to collaborating with this club through my new job in the Boerne Shrine Club.

By now everybody is really into the mood of hitting the gym to start off a new healthy year, as the results of all the delicious food that we had all thru the holidays. There’s no way, a person can see all the super spreads and just pass them up. So now we have to work them out and get ready to go south of the border. We’re ready to kick off another great year with the help of good Lord, and at the same time thanking him for keeping us in good health. Need to thank the last lineup for the stated meeting of last year and the last parade in Sattler. We cannot forget our lovely Ladies that supported the club at the parade and we also give thanks to the Canyon Lake Shrine Club that feeds us after the parade every year. We welcome our new officers for this New Year. Looking forward to supporting them for every commitment. The new officers are as follows: President-Mike Jaeger, Vice PresidentJohn Moro, Secretary-Walter Kaster, Drill Commander-Yours Truly. Hoping to see all of the club members at our Christmas gathering and installation of officers on Dec. 22nd and hoping everybody stays in good health and I will see you later.

As we ring in the New Year, the Alzafar Shotgun Unit looks ahead to have another stellar year of competitive shooting, fraternity and support to the Temple and our hospitals. And what a successful year we had in 2017, due primarily by the leadership and vision of our Past President, Jerry Smitha, along with the awesome support of his Lady Gay. A huge thank you to you both for your dedication and untiring support of the Shotgun Unit. You truly raised the bar for those that follow in your footsteps. In 2017, we saw membership of the unit grow, as did participation in stated meetings, competitive events, and other Shrine activities. I’d also like to thank all the friends and family that joined us for our monthly fun shoots and cookouts. We look forward to seeing more of you in 2018. Your support helped us bring home the President’s Trophy this year, given to the Texas Temple with highest cumulative scores from shotgun competitions at TSSSA and TSA. Our goal in 2018 is to keep it right where it belongs, at home in the Alzafar Shrine. November and December were busy months for us. During our stated meeting in November we voted on the officers for 2018, and the installation of those officers took place at our Christmas party in December at the Barn Door restaurant. And what a turnout we had for our Christmas party. From what I saw everyone had a great time. A special thanks to Past Potentate (Abou Saad) Terry Zittle for acting as master of ceremonies for the event, and Past Potentate (Alzafar) J.D. Thomas for swearing in the newly elected officers. And of course, congratulations to the officers for 2018, President Roger Pfeil, 1st Vice President Bill Willis, 2nd Vice President Hoagy Elmendorf, Secretary Greg Pate, and Treasurer (and Past President) Jerry Smitha. Other Nobles recognized during the event were co-top guns for 2017, Past President Scott Brown and Noble Bill Willis, and most improved shooter for 2017 Noble Greg Pate. With President Roger Pfeil at the helm this year, and the addition of Hoagy Elmendorf as 2nd Vice President, the “Smokin Clays” are in good hands for 2018. Roger and his Lady Karen, and Hoagy and his Lady Minnie, put in countless hours behind the scenes (and behind the grill) to make 2017 a huge success, and for that we’re grateful. Our first competitive event this year is TSSA which will be held in March right here in San Antonio. We hope to see you all there.

BURNING SUN By: Antonio ‘Tony’ Calderon

GOLF GIMMES By: Walt, the Sub-scribe

What a year it was. 2017 ended as strong as it began with a great Christmas/Installation party at the Petrolium Club hosted by Noble Russ and Lady Betty Puckett. Past Potentate and Golf Unit member, Bobby Hunt installed the new slate of elected officers: President Larry Hamilton, lst Vice President Jose Nino and 2d Vice President Richard Grona, and the members of the Board of Directors. The Golf Unit was recognized as one of the Alzafar units who participated and attended most of the Temple and State Shrine functions in 2017. One of the most significant was the Circus. At least five golf unit members worked at every circus presentation in San Antonio. It was not all work however, some of other activities that made 2017 full of fun and work, were the annual President’s Trip at the Horse Shoe Bay, an annual Fiesta Party and the Super Bowl Party. The Ladies Night Out is our way to show our ladies how much they are appreciated for the excellent support they give to all our activities. Fun and work were included in the activities designed to support the Shrine Children’s Hospitals. The annual Million Dollar match play tournament winner is presented a Million Dollar Certificate. The annual Toy golf tournament is another way to share the Christmas spirit with the children in the hospitals in Houston and Galveston. The golf unit hosts a lunch after the tournament for every golfer and family and friends who bring a toy or donation. Over two hundred toys and approximately three hundred dollars in cash and gift cards, were delivered to the Houston and Galveston hospitals. Nobles and Ladies, golfers or nongolfers are invited to join in the fun and work, with the golf family. “The difference in golf and government is that in golf you can’t improve your lie” FORE

The Burning Sun Unit would like to say goodbye to 2017 and hello to 2018!!! We are so thankful for our family and fraternity that allows us to make a difference by riding our karts every chance we get. Hoping everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year, the Burning Sun unit is ready to begin work. No better way to kick off the season of riding than participating in the George Washington parade. We look forward to the parade season and seeing what this unit can do throughout the year. As always if you are looking for family, speed, and that brotherly love come visit us. Room #5 every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7pm and we look forward to seeing you there.

DIRECTORS STAFF By: Charley “D” Our officers for the year 2018 have been duly installed and they are Director Walter Koehler, Assistant Director Donald English, Secretary Juan Flores and our Treasurer is being pro tem at this time. We need to give them our support as well as attend as many meetings as possible so that we may have a successful year. We need to recognize our members that are very valuable to our unit. So with that in mind we have a man that is always at staff work sessions at the Temple, doing work on the Temple and also out selling his counterparts at the annual Shrine Circus. He is by no means a young man in age but is in heart as he is 94 years young at this time and soon will be 95. He has not always been a member of the Directors Staff, as he also was a member of the Alzafar Drum and Bugle Corps as well as being a very good pistol shooter and member of the Alzafar Provost Guard. He is a Director Emeritus of our Directors Staff. I am speaking of my very good and longtime friend, Bill Mellon. So let’s give Bill a pat on the back whenever we see him as he deserves it. Sad news as we lost, in November, another dedicated and loyal staff member as well as a true Mason and Shriner, Viviano Rodriquez. He came from very good stock as his father, Big Rod, was well known in Eagle Pass, as Mr. Shriner because of all the great work he did with getting children to our hospitals as well as giving our Shrine Temple a lot of support during the parades in Eagle Pass. He will truly be missed. Our sympathy goes out to his family. Our sick, lame and, lazy report is not too bad. Shirley Smith had back surgery in November and so far she says it was a success. Ed Lee appears to be getting around okay while some of us are still hobbling with new knees. Let's keep everyone in our prayers for good health. We wish everyone a prosperous 2018. So it is “happy trails to you until we meet again” and may the Good Lord above take a likin to you.

CANYON LAKE SHRINE CLUB By: Tom Gilbert The Canyon Lake Shrine Club met on November 13, 2017. President, Lee Stroman welcomed everyone. Chaplain, Terry Miller said the invocation. The Pledge of Allegiance to the US flag and honors to the Texas flag was said. A delicious meal of turkey with all the trimmings was enjoyed by everyone. The Canyon Lake Shrine Club will have a chili dinner for all the Shriners and families after the Christmas parade in Sattler on December 9, 2017. Cakes will be donated by the Shrine Ladies. The installation of officers for 2018 will be at our regular meeting date of December 11, 2017. The elected officers are: President–David Mulholland, VicePresident–Steve White, Treasurer-Larry Remy, and Secretary–Tom Gilbert. Installation Officer will be Stuart Simms. The Canyon Lake Shrine Club meets the second Monday of each month. Anyone wanting to join us for the meeting can contact President, Lee Stroman at 830237-7649 or Secretary, Tom Gilbert at 830-899-4839.

HOT SANDS BBQ UNIT By: David Brewer

BOERNE SHRINE CLUB By: Miguel A. Inclan, Jr. Nobles and Ladies all, the Boerne Shrine Club will be working very hard to maximize our fundraising efforts for this coming year to help the Alzafar Hospital Transportation Fund meets its needs. The Magic Show was a great success and we hope that everyone had a good time. We are looking forward to next year's performance. This year I would like to focus on raising our fraternity's profile not only within our great community but within our region. Not only will this campaign bring more donations to our Transportation Fund but we also hope that potential patients who may use our services find out about what we have to offer. We will also have a Burn Awareness Week campaign coming soon.

Howdy Nobles. Hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We here at Hot Sands BBQ Unit would like to take the time to thanks all the volunteers, ladies, units and organizations that came together and helped make the circus a success for us in the Branding Iron by serving and preparing meals, and also a special thank you to Noble Dale Curry for his help with the circus. PROVOST GUARD By: Michael Raymond December 1st was our Christmas party in the Terrace room. Those in attendance had a wonderful time and were treated to a delicious catered full course meal and music provided by Rich Orr. We are wishing an equally wonderful and safe Christmas to those who were unable to attend. A big thanks to all who helped with the planning and decorations which made the event special. We were able to squeeze in some necessary business regarding the installation of officers for the upcoming year. They are as follows: 2018 Marshal-Tom Martin, 1st Assistant Marshal-Ken Propes, 2nd Assistant Marshal-Michael Raymond and Secretary/Treasurer-Rich Orr. Our very own P.P. Bob Green handled the swearing in honors and a special thanks to Divan members in attendance, Chief Rabban Jason Triggs and High Priest and Prophet Marty Bartlett for their continued support. 2018 will be a big year for our unit as our very own Steve Aikens will be installed as State Marshal, congratulations to him. Also, Alzafar Provost Guard Unit will be the host for our states Mid-Winter pistol shoot in March. This leaves plenty of time for those shooters out there who would like join us and participate in our Mid-Winter and future shooting events. Our unit meetings are held on the 1st Wednesday of the month in the Provost Guard/Shotgun Unit room, social time at 6:00 pm, dinner at 6:30 pm, meeting starts at 7:00 pm. We welcome anyone to come by for a visit and learn what we're all about. Until next time, sincerely Michael Raymond, 2nd Asst. Marshal

RV CLUB

The November rally was held at the Bluff Trails Ranch RV Resort in Ingram. The weather when we meet at Bluff Trails is usually quite cold, but this year it was very pleasant. This allowed us to sit out and do our circle of stories. We did finally get some colder temperatures that allowed us to fire off the large fireplace in the rally hall. The park has a feeder that goes off twice a day and the deer come a running. They seem to have an internal clock as to the time of day the feeder delivers. The herd of Axis deer numbers at least 50 with a couple of nice bucks. We also observed a flock of wild turkeys. There must have been at least 60 of them gleaning the corn that was left over. We had a great turn out for this rally of 20 rigs and all had a great time. Several folks took a trip into Kerrville to shop or go to the many restaurants. We had election of officers. The new officers are: Wagon Master–Jim Miller, Assistant Wagon Master–Dave Brewton, Treasurer– Dave Browne, and Secretary–Ken Tucke. The December rally will be held in Bandera at the Skyline RV Resort. We will be having our Christmas Party and installation of officers. Illustrious Sir, J D Thomas will be the Installing Master. If you have a RV and want to have a lot of fun in a relaxed atmosphere with Brother Nobles and their Ladies, come out and rally with us. I know you will have a great time. Call Wagon Master Addy Addington (830-931-9707) or assistant Wagon Master Jim Miller (210-260-0335) for information about the next rally. You can always call me at (210-679-7356).

ALTRUI COURT NO. 89 – LADIES OF THE ORIENTAL SHRINE OF NORTH AMERICA

By: Frankie Tuma, High Priestess

The time has come for Altrui Court to relax and enjoy the Christmas season. There is no meeting in December as we always have our Christmas party on the meeting date of the first Thursday in December. Second Ceremonial Lady, Ann Teague, has worked hard to give us special treats at our party. Her theme this year is “First Responders” and every lady who attended was to bring a stuffed animal to give to the police, child protective services, ambulance, fire or other first responders. We lost two important Altrui members recently. Lady Minnie Mora, who was in the clown unit for many years, and Lady Jerry Schero (mother of Cindy Gabel, PHP) who was in the patrol unit. Both of these ladies worked hard making items to be sent to the Shriners hospital in Houston and Galveston. When volunteers were needed, they both were there you will be greatly missed. January we will be meeting on the first Thursday, as usual and I hope everyone will be able to attend as we have some important items to be discussed. As your High Priestess this year, I wish each and everyone and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Aloha and see you next year!

A Life Well Lived A life well lived is a precious gift of hope and strength and grace, From someone who has made our world a bright and better place. It’s filled with moments sweet and sad, with smiles and sometimes tears, With friendships formed and good times shared, and laughter through the years. A life well lived is a legacy of joy and pride and pleasure, A living, lasting memory our grateful hearts will treasure.
