BU DDY’S STORY

| THE BR STORY As a young man, Buddy Rhodes was consumed by clay. It was all he could think about, night and day. More important than the material itself, Buddy was compelled by the creative process. Eventually that creative process pushed his desire beyond the capacity of the material he was creating with. His ideas were too big for a kiln. Rather than let this limit his ability to create, Buddy struck out to find something different to quench his desire as a maker. Buddy was after a material that would behave like clay, but that could develop strength and durability without the need of a kiln. Buddy was after a self hardening clay. Buddy found his solution in concrete, but not concrete in the way the world had come to know, a workhorse in the development of modern civilization- cold and utilitarian. Buddy was investigating the material through his own lens, as a moldable and infinite material, and from that process a whole new material came to life. Buddy created a material that behaved like both clay and concrete, and from that moment an evolution began. Buddy sought to create, and to share with other makers who wished to do the same. Over the decades of this collaboration, a whole new language has been born. A language in the tradition of the craftsman movement, and a set of materials that would allow the maker community to create their vision.

Buddy has spent the past 2 years collaborating with the BlueConcrete team about ways to improve the materials we make available. BlueConcrete has spent extensive time working THE NEW M AT E R I A LS

with concrete professionals across all spectrums, from the DIYer to multi-

national industrial companies in order to understand their needs and provide solutions to their troubles. It is the merger of the inspiration of Buddy and the technology of BlueConcrete that has brought these new materials into the world. Enjoy! MIXES Looking at all the possible ways to approach mix design, we have settled on 4 mixes which are the building blocks from which virtually anything can be created. Each one of these mixes are unique in their workability habits, and they are all built with performance in mind. These mixes are incredibly strong and durable, but more importantly, they are versatile enough to build virtually any finish possible with concrete.

BUDDY RHODES COUNTER MI X The Original Recipe, this is the mix that started this all, famed for it’s ability to behave like clay. While we have made significant improvements to this mix in the Buddy Rhodes Craftsman Mix, the Counter Mix will be available to those who have made a habit of using this mix over the past decade. For recipes and instructions for this mix, please visit our website. Cementitious Content 23.8 lb

BUDDY RHODES CR AF T SMAN MI X The Craftsman Mix is our easiest mix to work and provides exceptional possibilities for varying the surface finishes. We have taken the mix Buddy created decades ago, and have improved performance. The mix is formulated with well proportioned ingredients and a dry polymer. Water is the only ingredient needed to achieve high performance and great workability. The Craftsman mix can be pressed up vertical surfaces, trowels like butter, and can be made fluid to conform to any shape. It is ideal for the newcomer to concrete, but is also revered by professionals for it’s versatility. Cementitious Content 20.5 lb

GFRC BLENDED MIX GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) has become the material of choice for many in the professional community. BlueConcrete’s team was the first group in the artisan world to address the shortcomings of the GFRC mix design, and developed mixes that outperformed what the market had seen before. Buddy’s new GFRC mix is the next generation of the Fuzion ZFRC, a mix that was developed and refined by people that work with GFRC professionally. This mix can be sprayed, pressed, cast, and troweled, and is a perfect high performance base mix for more traditional concrete mixes. This GFRC mix can be made incredibly thin, and can be manipulated into virtually any shape. It is the workhorse of our mixes, and is the preferred choice for many of the most successful artisans in the concrete world. While there is a slightly higher learning curve with this mix then there is with the Craftsman mix, it is still accessible to newcomers who are looking to push the boundaries a bit further. ECC BLENDED MIX This is a mix for the most demanding applications. ECC was developed to combat concrete’s naturally brittle habits, a big problem particularly in areas prone to earthquakes. ECC is an incredibly ductile material, allowing unprecedented flex prior to failure. We have improved the workability of this mix. The ECC mix can be the consistency of taffy, or can behave like hard clay. With a skilled hand, this mix can also be cast, troweled, and pressed. This mix performs at the highest level, and is not for the faint of heart. This is a mix for masochists, madmen, engineers and artisans with the highest demands of performance and durability. Cementitious Content 28.45 lb

10 POUND ARTISAN MIX This is just as it sounds. Ten pounds of a mix that just needs water. Reinforcement, water reducer, additional aggregates, and pigment can be added to suit the project. This mix can be made into very thin as it does not have any large aggregates. This mix is ideal for smaller projects. Whether a base for a sculpture, handcrafted jewelry, objects for the home and garden, or art, this mix brings the craft of concrete to artisans who want to create on a smaller scale. Cementitious Content 5.2 lb

ABOUT OUR BLENDED MIXES These mixes are available fully blended in 50# bags using aggregates that have been specially selected for their unique characteristics. They contain no water reducer, fiber or pigment, leaving ultimate control in your hands. We have various recipes for you to try, and a wide range of materials for you to choose from in order to create a mix perfect for your needs.

ADMIXTURE Rather than just having mixes that are blended for you, we are introducing the capability to build your own mix using your local materials. We will give you the recipe we use in our blended mixes, and you can follow that recipe using your local ingredients to blend the mix yourself. You can also use these admixtures to create mixes entirely unique to you. In fact, much of the development of this set of materials is based on artisans who have done just that, and have come back to us to share their feedback and results.

and T H ER E’S MOR E In addition to the new pre-blended mixes and admixtures, we have improved the entire supporting cast. New materials include •

CHOOSE YOU R FINISH

Much of the success of an artisan concrete project boils down to selecting the right mix for a given project. What is the right mix? That depends on a few factors. PICK T H E F I N ISH T H AT IS R IGH T FOR YOU R PROJ E CT.

—What finish are you after? —What is your skill level? and so on…. These questions begin the process of picking the right mix

for the project. As you answer the various questions, the right mix will become more and more clear. I just want “concrete countertops.” It’s just concrete, right? Correct, it is just concrete. And concrete is an infinitely moldable material, that’s what makes it so cool. Since it is moldable, the first thing you need to figure is how you want it to look. WHO ARE YOU? This may simplify the decision making process more than anything. While not a steadfast rule, our mixes can be broken down into how user friendly they are. The Craftsman Mix is a very simple mix to use, the GFRC mix requires a touch more effort, and the ECC is for masochists and madmen. While there are certain exceptions to these rules (some of which will get pointed out in the recipe section), this should give you a good reference point.

F I N ISH E S

F I N ISH E S P R E S S E D — This is Buddy Rhodes’ Signature technique. The concrete is pressed into precast in forms, and excels for vertical surfaces with minimal effort. The color options are endless. The size of your voids depends on how soft your mix is and how hard you press. This is arguably the easiest finish to get great results from.

C R E A M — This finish is accomplished when very little processing is done to a neatly cast piece. This requires finish requires significant attention to detail during the mold building process. It shows loads of character, while often being soft and muted in appearance.

P O L I S H E D — This finish is commonly referred to as a ‘salt and pepper’ finish. This is a result a polishing the concrete after it has been cast. This can be achieved whether cast right side up, or precast upside down. This process exposes a small amount sand in the mix, which is where the name “salt and pepper” comes from.

G R O U N D — This is similar to Polished, but more of the surface is removed to expose the sand fully, or to expose decorative aggregates. This is the process to use if you want to expose glass or other decorative aggregates.

T R O W E L E D — This is a finish that reflects the hand of the maker. Full of character and variation, every piece will be different and unique.

H I G H S P R AY— This is a GFRC technique created when the mold is sprayed with variation, and often with different colors. It produces variations in tone and texture, either subtly or dramatically.

V E I N E D — This is achieved when different colors of wet mix are blended to together and placed in the form. There are numerous methods to achieve this finish.

G L A Z E D — All of these finishes can be glazed using various application techniques. The finish you choose will be the undertone of color and movement that you see below the glaze. You can use a Sprayed or Lightly Ground finish, and add a tint, creating a more monolithic finish. You can also use a Pressed or Veined finish, apply the glaze, and have far more movement and character in the finished piece.

C U S T O M — For every finish we discuss, there is an artisan out there coming up with something new. Concrete is a material of infinite possibilities. These mixes and techniques can be mixed, matched, and manipulated to create infinite variations.

GU IDE TO R E CIPE S

There are as many concrete recipes and techniques as there are baking recipes and methods! Understand, these recipes are not steadfast rules, rather general guidelines around mixes used by professionals to achieve various results. These mixes can be GU IDE TO R E CIPE S

manipulated, modified and twisted to suit your creative needs. There are as many finish possibilities with these mixes as there

artisans using them.

So let’s talk about some good practices. T E M P E R AT U R E I S I M P O R TA N T. When cement and water are combined, a chemical reaction begins. This reaction produces heat, and is accelerated by heat. The hotter the mix gets, the faster it hardens. For large or complicated projects you may need to extend the working time of the mix. The important factor is to monitor and understand the temperature of the mix. Once the temperature of your mix reaches 70 F, the cement reaction begins to accelerate. Keep the mix temperature in the high 50’s or low 60’s if possible. One way to keep the mix cool is to use cold water and even ice. How Cold? That depends on the other variables you are dealing with. Some portion of your water is ice, in hotter times up to 50% of your water weight will be ice, and other times it means just using cool water.

W AT E R R E D U C E R S | P L A S T I C I Z E R S Water Reducer is used in many of these mixes. The water reducers, also commonly known as plasticizers, are chemicals that reduce the amount of water necessary to produce the mix consistency you are after. In general, the more water used, the weaker the mix will be. Our goal is to minimize the water content and still maintained the required workability. Water can be added in small doses in situations where the durability of the object is not paramount, but it should be used sparingly in the mixing process. Water reducers are used differently by virtually every artisan in order to meet their desired objective. Basically, everyone has personal preferences, and that is ok.

This is a concern if you are going up vertical surfaces. • How much is too much? You know you have gone beyond the threshold of water reducer dosages when you notice your mix begin to separate, causing the heavier particles to sink to the bottom of your bucket. Depending on the severity of your segregation, sometimes you can wait a bit for the mix to stiffen up, and remix. Sometimes you need to add more mix to your bucket to balance out the consistency (keep your proportions in mind with this to ensure your color stays consistent).

T H E R E A R E N U M E R O U S W AY S T O M I X . These mixes have been mixed in virtually every type of concrete and mortar mixer available. The ideal mixers are handheld mortar mixers, particularly the CS Unitec Eibenstock EHR 12/1.3R, but less expensive mixers can be used as well. If you want to graduate to a larger mixer, we are keen to the vertical shaft mixers carried by Imer. Get in touch with us, and we can set you up with any of their tools. If you don’t have access to a mixer, and all you have is a hoe, is that enough? Sure. Everyone needs a workout!

REINFORCEMENTS Each mix needs some type of reinforcement. We have a great blog post discussing the principles behind reinforcement of artisan objects. Find that article, as well as other articles at blog.buddyrhodes.com One helpful hint when adding fibers to your mix in higher dosagesIf you create a scale in your mind from 1-10, where 1 is stiff and 10 is fluid, you will lose roughly 2 points in that scale when adding fiber. So if the mix looks perfect when you start adding your fibers, you will find that the fibers make the mix a bit too stiff. See Page 34 to read more about our line of fiber reinforcements.

The press technique is Buddy Rhodes’ signature technique. It is achieved by using his

of GFRC (see next section). A thin layer is pressed into the form, followed by a backer mix

containing AR Glass Fiber, offering the piece the necessary structural reinforcement. Because this mix is often pressed up vertical walls, it is important to be cautious with dosing water reducer. If too much water reducer is added, the mix will have a tendency to slump down your vertical surfaces. Water reducer should only be used sparingly in the surface mix to soften the mix for improved workability. You can be slightly more liberal when adding water reducer to the backer mix to compensate for the glass fiber stiffening the mix.

A GFRC Mix is a simple composite. GFRC typically consists of a surface layer (face/mist coat) without fiber, and a structural layer (backer mix) containing Alkali Resistant Glass Fibers. This mix can also be sprayed, poured, pressed, or troweled.

GFRC

Due to the absence of larger aggregate in the mix, it is an ideal base mix to add decorative aggregates to, or to build a specific

custom mix from. In some cases the GFRC mix contains fibers throughout, such as the SCC mix. The introduction of GFRC to our industry has made possible stronger and lighter weight pieces. The mix can be used to create many different looks, from a clean almost machined look to one of depth and variegation with pockets.

The key components to this mix design is the particle gradation and high dosage of fiber.

From a creative standpoint, this mix can conform to highly unusual workabilties, allowing for many possible variations in finish. While this mix takes some getting used to, the professionals that use it swear by the vast possibilities and performance associated with this mix. It is very strong, it will bend before it breaks, and it produces unrivaled aesthetics and durability. O C R E AT E Y O U R

These mixes contain fiber throughout the mix, which will ultimately become part of the finish. In the case of troweled finishes, a composition similar to those mentioned with GFRC can be utilized. Instead of eliminating fibers throughout the face mix, you increase the loading of acrylic fibers which trowel well, and decrease the loading of PVA 100 which are far more visible in finished surfaces.

CU R ING

Concrete develops strength through a process called hydration. We want concrete to be as hard and dense as possible, so we create an environment where hydration is as efficient as CU R ING OV ERV IE W

possible, this is called curing. So what does this all mean?

CURING When cement comes in contact with water, a chemical reaction begins to take place. This chemical reaction uses the elements of the cement and the water, and converts these elements into a crystalline formation. This is hydration, and this hydration is most efficient in a humid and warm environment. If humidity and heat cease to be present, the process of hydration is stifled and slows to a snails pace, and we don’t want that to happen. In order to see that concrete reaches its maximum potential, we create a curing environment, meaning we go through the necessary steps to keep the concrete warm and moist for the first hours or days after casting. Moist felt, covered with plastic to keep the moisture from escaping, often covered again by blankets or insulation to keep the heat from escaping. This will create an environment ideal for concrete to develop strength. So how persistent do I need to be in this step, and how long should I allow the concrete to be in this curing environment? Whether we are talking about cured meats, or fine wine, or bourbon, or hot sauce, the mark of quality is often referenced in the period of time that the product was allowed to develop its genius, and what kind of environment it was allowed to do so in. Equally true, there is plenty of good things in the world that are not babied to perfection, and they serve a perfectly good function. Ultimately this is a choice for you to make. If you create a good curing environment, anything beyond 72 hours in the mold is beyond good. 48 hours is ideal. 24 hours is common (and can be improved using heating blankets, but only under guidelines of a pro). One note of caution, if the concrete is in a mold that is built with a material that is absorbent (ie. melamine) extended periods of moisture and heat can cause bad things to happen to the mold which will reflect into the finished surface. Troweled finishes should not have plastic placed directly on them during the curing process, as it is likely to leave discolorations.

Wait a minute! This seems complicated, and these other companies say I can pull their product from the mold in 16 hours and it will be super strong.

time you, your clients, or one of your

guests does what everyone does when they address a piece of furniture, run their hand along the underside of the piece. PROCESSING Now that you have demolded, what’s next? The answer to this question depends on 2 things, what was it you had in mind to begin with, and what you received as the result of casting. Certain techniques will render you with something that needs very little processing. Other techniques will require a bit of processing prior to being ready to seal and finish your piece. There will normally be voids or pinholes to be filled. This is accomplished with the Bone Paste Plus, perhaps some pigment, and a bit of water. The new Bone Paste Plus includes a polymer blended in, so the acrylic additive is no longer necessary, just add water. The paste doesn’t have any large particles, so it is soft and smooth, allowing it to easily fill holes and voids. This process is not dissimilar to mudding drywall, paste is applied and polished off. If you’ve chosen a pressed finish, now is the time to add some character. Fill the voids with one color, or multiple colors. The color can be similar to the base color, or it can be complimentary or contrasting color. Fill the voids, a little bit at a time, allowing each layer to dry fully (a few hours depending on the temperature) before adding the next layer. Be sure you leave a thin ‘skim coat’ of your final color, not so much that you will have to polish forever, but enough that you will fully fill the voids.

POLISHING

Most often, you will want to do a bit of grinding and polishing. This will allow you to clean up edges and remove any casting residue, or it could allow you to fully expose a glass aggregate POLISHING OV ERV IE W

you have added to the mix, all depending on how you go about polishing.

The most important thing to understand before polishing is the ‘geology’ of the concrete. The finished surface is the ‘cream layer’ consisting of very fine materials only. As you work your way into the slab, the next layer you will find is a fine bit of sand, the ‘salt and pepper layer’. Then you will begin to fully expose the sand particles, the “sand layer”. Finally you will enter the “aggregate layer” where your sand and any additional aggregate is fully exposed. When polishing into your concrete, you will progressively encounter these various layers. Your choice of grinding and polishing tools, pads, and process will reflect what you are trying to accomplish. To maintain the cream layer, lightly polish the concrete using pads that are 200 grit or higher. The higher grits produce higher sheen. To expose your aggregate, begin grinding with more aggressive grit pads, progressing to higher grits until reaching the desired sheen and exposure.

P OL ISHING - WE T OR DRY ? Dry polishing is likely to produce a higher sheen, even at lower grits, and it will produce a dust that is not good for your health. Wet polishing is messier, but safer for your health and it produces a sheen that is more true to the grits you are using. Careful attention should be given when using electric tools in a wet environment. As for tools, you can use a wet/dry variable speed polisher, or a random orbital polisher. Variable speed polishers and grinders are best for aggressive grinding, and are faster with polishing. The fastest option is our Planetary Polisher which utilizes three grinding heads working in unison. It is a great tool for a very good price. It will speed up the process on large pieces to a remarkable degree, but you will still need to finishing the border and edges with a polisher. Random Orbital Sanders are nice since they are less likely to leave ‘swirl marks’ in the way that polishers do. It is a slower and more methodical process, but it is easier for containing water in the case of wet polishing or dust in the case of dry polishing.

ETCHING

A unique and versatile finishing technique used by many professionals is etching the concrete. Etching can be done in conjunction with stencils to produce designs, or as an entire ETCHING OV ERV IE W

surface treatment.

Etching is a process of washing and profiling the concrete with and acidic, or non acidic solution. In the case of a ‘full treatment’, the entire surface is flooded with water, then an acidic solution is applied. The concentration of the acidic solution varies based on the desired texture and working time. Several rinses will neutralize the acid, follow this with a wet buffing using Non Woven Abrasives (pg 52).

WHY ETCH? Etching opens up the surface so that the sealer is more easily received, it flattens the sheen, it also allows ‘tooth’ for materials like Glazes. While it is not necessary, and in many situations it is not practical, it is a useful technique in many situations.

GL AZING

Glazes can be used to produce color enhancements, whether to produce a full color treatment, or to shade the color in one direction or the other. Glazes are a water based color treatment GL AZING OV ERV IE W

that will produce a consistent color regardless of the state of the concrete.

Whether applied over stencils to create patterns, used as a tint, or applied to create variation and movement, the possibilities are endless. There are many techniques for application, which included rubbing with a microfiber cloth, dabbing with a cloth, applying with a roller or brush, and so on.

H E L P F U L T I P S F O R A P P LY I N G G L A Z E S : • The material can be applied over polished concrete, but it will be far more durable and rich in concrete that is matte or etched. • When the glaze is wet, it is active. When you rub across a still wet area, it will remove the material. This can either be a cool effect, or a precursor to cursing. • The longer the glaze has been dry, the harder it will be to remove. Soon after drying, it can be removed with a wet towel, the next day it will require diamond abrasives. • Apply thin layers. You will end up with a more durable finish applying multiple thin layers as opposed to one thick layer. • The first coat is the hardest. When the concrete is thirsty, it is tough to keep from getting streaks. You can dilute the glaze with distilled water by 50%. If you want to make an even more dilute solution, you can make a base of 25% CH Prep, 25% FS Sealz, and 50% water. With this formula, you can make as dilute glaze as you want. The further the dilution on your first layer, the more forgiving. • While this is compatible with many different sealers, and it in fact enhances the performance of many sealers, it should be tested with non BR Sealers. • You can combine these colors to make virtually any color you want. This is very useful if you have concrete colors you want to shift the color of, or if you simply want to enhance a color. If you want help formulating a color to suit a particular situation, let us know and we can help you in that process. • A dilute version of the Black Glaze is a very effective way to enhance virtually any color. In many cases, this will produce the most durable ‘wet look’ effect you will find. • Protect your piece with sealer. These Glazes are fully UV stable, and will stand up to a fair bit of abrasion, but sealer will help protect them for the long haul.

SEA LING | BR SYST EM

Concrete is inherently a porous material and often needs to be sealed for particular environments and uses. There are multitude of systems and products on the market used for sealing concrete. There is no magic answer, every sealer and system SEA LING OV ERV IE W

has pros and cons. We offer 2 systems for sealing concrete, developed after many years of experience, trial and error, and

observation. Like most things we value, concrete requires care and attention. We love concrete because of its handcrafted nature, ageless beauty, and ability to develop its own life story. If a carefree and sterile material is what you are wanting, you are in the wrong place.

Buddy’s system is a combination of penetrating sealer, a satin acrylic sealer, and beeswax. The penetrating sealer is a primer, the satin sealer is a protective coat that provides decent stain BR SYST EM

resistance, and the wax is an optional maintenance step.

Do you need to use all three? Not necessarily, but here is the scoop. The penetrating sealer provides a primer that will improve stain resistance and repels liquids. This adds further protection if there is a failure of the satin sealer, or there is prolonged exposure to staining agents. The satin sealer provides your main source of protection, particularly against acids. The wax is an optional step, it provides a sacriďŹ cial layer, and allows for an easy process for rejuvenating your concrete. The only downside to the wax is that it is hard to remove if you want to reseal your countertops. We have a great 3 part blog post about this if you visit blog.buddyrhodes.com This sealer system is easy to apply, easy to repair, and provides good protection, making it a great choice for many situations.

SEA LING | ICT SYST EM

When applied well to high performance concrete, there is not a sealer in the market that can compete with ICT. This is a popular choice among professionals, but it requires close attention ICT SYST EM

throughout the entire process of creating and finishing concrete. For more details, a

full application guide and application video can be found on our website. ICT SYSTEM ICT is a hybrid reactive sealing system. What the heck does that mean? Reactive sealers penetrate into the concrete, convert weak material into crystalline structures, and block the pore structure of the concrete from penetration of foreign materials. It does all this while maintaining breathability, so you don’t have the concern of the sealer ‘lifting’ if moisture penetrates. The hybrid part of the equation is that ICT also includes advanced technology to improve the stain resistance of the concrete. This sealer is the highest performing reactive sealer on the marketplace, and has been developed over many years specifically for artisan concrete applications. Here’s the catch- ICT relies on the concrete you are applying it on. This is not a classic topical or penetrating sealer that cures to itself and sits on or in the concrete. This means that the curing, processing, and application of the sealer happens thoughtfully to increase the effectiveness of the system.

R EINFORCING FIBERS

A L K A L I R E S I S TA N T G L A S S F I B E R S are designed specifically for use in concrete. Alkali Resistant (AR) Glass fibers are manufactured from a specially formulated glass composition with an optimum level of Zirconia (ZrO2) to be suitable for use in concrete. These AR fibers are designed to resist breaking down during mixing and processing so that it stays basically as a bundle of filaments. These products are particularly suitable for Premix GFRC and other mortar and concrete reinforcement applications. AR glass fiber have high tensile strength and modulus, do not rust like steel, and are easily incorporated into concrete mixes. Our fibers are 19mm (3/4”) in length with, 200 filaments per stand, with a filament diameter of 18 microns. These fibers impart strength in a concrete unit due to their bundled nature. Due to the fact that they are bundled fibers, they are more likely to show up in finished surfaces if precautions are not taken. See recipes section to read more about this. Packaged in 1 lb, 12 lb, and 44 lb bags

A L K A L I R E S I S TA N T G L A S S S C R I M is an oriented fiber fabric. Scrims are particularly used in conjunction with fiber reinforced mixes to provide additional tensile strengths in locations that will experience point specific strain. When they are placed in the tensile regions of the product they can significantly increase the flexural strength of the composite. This scrim is produced with 10mm X 10mm webbing, and comes in 40” wide rolls. It is available in lengths of 15’, 50’ 100’, and 300’

P V A F I B E R S (polyvinyl alcohol) are high-performance reinforcement fibers for concrete and mortar. PVA fibers are well-suited for a wide variety of applications because of their superior crack-fighting properties, high modulus of elasticity, excellent tensile and molecular bond strength, and high resistance to alkali, UV, chemicals, fatigue and abrasion. PVA fibers are unique in their ability to create a molecular bond with mortar and concrete that is 300% greater than other fibers. These are monofilament fibers that are available in 3 different deniers (diameter of the fiber)- 7, 15, and 100. The fiber lengths are 1/4” (PVA7), 3/8” (PVA15), and 1/2” (PVA100). Due to the fine nature of these fibers, and the fact that they disperse into monofillament fibers, they are less likely to be visible in finished surface. How visible they are in relation to each other is in direct proportion to their various diameters (7 is least visible, 100 is most visible). Equally true, the small the fiber, the more fibers there are for any given unit of measure, the more likely they are to choke mixes at higher dosage rates. This is why the PVA100 are dosed at higher rates in the more flowable mixes than are the PVA15. Packaged in 1 lb bags

A C R Y L I C F I B E R - A C 5 0 is a fiber reinforcement for concrete that enhances the performance and durability of concrete, adding years to its useful life. This modified polymer fiber, made of staple fiber, reduces shrinkage cracks and provides reinforcement. Reduces permeability, increases impact and abrasion resistance, and improves tensile and flexural properties of concrete mixes. These fibers are the least visible of our fiber offerings, and they are the easiest fiber to trowel, making them especially useful for troweled surfaces. Packaged in 1 lb, 8 lb, and 40 lb bags

CUSTOM COLOR

Do you have a color you have in mind that you want to match? We can do that for you. You name the color, and we will match it for you. One simple way to do that is to reference Benjamin MooreTM colors. Our in-house color lab can match any Benjamin

CUSTOM COLOR

MooreTM color, allowing your project seamless color expression in any artisan concrete project.

We have outlayed 200 standard custom colors that that have been preformulated, which you will see swatches for in the following pages. If you don’t find what you are after in those 200 colors, our lab with custom formulate the color you want.

HOW TO ORDER CUSTOM COLOR All colors are formulated as a percentage of the Total Cementitious Binder (TCB) of your mix. TCB is a combination of the cementitious materials in the mix, including all cement and Pozzolans. The TCB is multiplied by the “Loading Percentage Rate”, listed with each of the color swatches, this determines how much pigment needs to be added to your mix.

HERE’S HOW IT WORK S• Determine your color - You are a big fan of swimming, so you pick “2058-30 Deep Ocean” as your color. Look at the swatch and you will see a little % number on the swatch, this is your loading rate(LR). It has a loading rate of 8.55% or .0855 • Determine your TCB- Your mix is a blend of cement, pozzolan (maybe), sand, aggregate, and so on. For the sake of example, we will say that your mix has 10 lb of cement, and 2 lb of VCAS as a pozzolan. So, Your TCB is 12lb • Determine your Number of Batches - How much coverage will you get with your mix? This will determine how many batches of concrete you will need to make, which will tell you how much pigment you need. Let’s say your mix covers 2 sqft at 1.5” thick, and the piece you are making is 10 sqft and 1.5” thick. You will need 5 batches of mix. • Round up - It is good practice to add 10% to that amount for slurry, spillage, and test samples. To add 10%, multiply by 1.1 • Round up one more time - These pigments are sold incrementally by the pound. • Determine the cost - Each color has a TYPE # ,and each number has a cost listed. You picked Deep Ocean, which is a Type II color that costs $15.80 per lb when purchased in increments of 5lb or more.
