Course Insight The Warren Course at Notre Dame opened in 2000, designed by the renowned team of Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, after the original Notre Dame course was cut from 18 to nine holes by campus construction. The course is open to the public and winds its way through 250 wooded acres, with tees and greens close together making it good for walking. Reminiscent of classic early American courses, the course features strategically placed bunkers and undulating greens of various shapes, many with false fronts. It hosted the 2010 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship. 218

David Toms made key putts on the 16th and 17th holes to emerge from a crowded pack and capture his first win as a senior at age 51. Five players, including Toms, were tied for the lead midway through the back nine. The 2001 PGA champion took the lead with a 16-foot birdie putt on No. 16, but on the next hole drove into a fairway bunker, was forced to lay up, and faced a 19-foot downhill putt for par—which he sank. “That was just an unbelievable putt I made for par. Certainly that was the key to victory,” said Toms, who shot an even-par 70 on Sunday for a 3-under 277 total. That was one stroke ahead of 54-hole leader Jerry Kelly (72), Miguel Angel Jimenez (69) and Tim Petrovic (70).
CHARITY BENEFIT The USGA Foundation provides support for programs that target under-served audiences, junior golfers, women and beginners of all ages to develop a passionate and engaged group that will have a long-term commitment to the game. Course Insight
Firestone Country Club’s South Course transitions to hosting PGA TOUR Champions after being the site of various PGA TOUR events since 1954, most recently a World Golf Championships event from 1999-2001 and 2003-2018. The club was established in 1929, with the South Course designed by Bert Way. Robert Trent Jones Sr. extensively redesigned it prior to the 1960 PGA Championship— the first of three times Firestone held that event. The layout is known for a collection of long and rugged par 4s and for the 667-yard par-5 16th hole, known as “The Monster.”

Vijay Singh began the final round one stroke behind 54-hole co-leader Jeff Maggert and it stayed that way almost all day as the pair made the same score on the first 15 holes of the final round, each making five birdies. It became a tie when Maggert bogeyed No. 16, and pars by each on the last two holes of regulation sent them to a playoff, which Singh won with an approach to two feet for a birdie on the second extra hole and at age 55 his first victory in a senior major. “To win the first major on this tour, I’m really excited about that,” said Singh, a winner of two PGA Championships and a Masters. Singh made only one bogey all week at Exmoor Country Club outside Chicago with rounds of 6867-66-67 for a 20-under 268 total. Brandt Jobe was third at 270 after a closing 66.
CHARITY BENEFIT Northern Ohio Golf Charities, which operates the event, has contributed more than $27 million from tournaments at Firestone over the years. Among the many recipients are Akron Children’s Hospital and the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank.
