“I gave myself enough cushion that I could get away with a bad nine, which I started with, and then luckily enough the putter saved me at times.” —Rickie Fowler
Rickie Fowler built a four-stroke lead through 54 holes with rounds of 66-66-65 and held on in windier conditions in the final round for a 71 that enabled him to win by four. Fowler was 2-over on the front nine Sunday, making a double bogey on the sixth, and while playing the 12th hole his lead was trimmed to one over Gary Woodland. That’s when Fowler made back-to-back birdies on Nos. 12 and 13, holing putts of 38 and 23 feet. He slammed the door with a tee shot to three feet on the par-3 16th for a birdie that put him ahead by five and enabled him to easily survive a bogey-bogey finish. Woodland bogeyed the 18th for a 69 that dropped him into a tie for second with Morgan Hoffmann (68). Besides the long putts at the 12th and 13th, Fowler holed a 30-foot birdie putt at the eighth in the final round. For the week, he was second in Strokes Gained: Putting. Fowler made birdies on his first seven tries on the course’s two par 5s until a harmless bogey on 18 in the final round. PGA TOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE 2017/2018, Part 1
