TOURNAMENT OVERVIEW

JULY 15-18

The Open Championship

Location & Course Information

ROYAL ST. GEORGE’S GOLF CLUB, SANDWICH, KENT, ENGLAND The course was designed by club founder Dr. William Laidlaw Purves in 1887 in the mold of links courses in Purves’ native Scotland. The routing remains largely unchanged, though many blind shots were eliminated over the decades. The course hosts the Open for the 15th time. In preparation for the 2021 Open, bunkers were enlarged, reconfigured or eliminated on several holes. Yardage: 7,211; par 70.

In the final round Shane Lowry carded a 1-over 72, placing him at 15-under for the tournament and six strokes clear of the field to clinch his first-career major championship victory.

Notable Course Features

The 545-yard 14th hole has out of bounds tight all the way down the right side. Contenders Bernhard Langer (1993) and Dustin Johnson (2011) both hit shots out of bounds in the final round, Langer on the drive and Johnson on the second shot. A ditch runs across the fairway at the 330-yard mark, keeping long hitters from bombing a driver in dry conditions.
