DEFINING MOMENTS

A MAN WITH A PLAN

MGM Resorts Championship, April 15-18, 2021 By Kevin Prise Peter Uihlein long has been known for his creative, dynamic short game—as noted by good friend Roberto Diaz, who nudged Uihlein by a stroke at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Chitimacha Louisiana Open in late March. Uihlein had grown frustrated, though, with his full-swing consistency. In the 2019-20 PGA TOUR season, the former Oklahoma State standout ranked No. 161 in Strokes Gained: Off The Tee, and finished 166th in the FedExCup standings. But the Massachusetts native had a plan. Last winter, he installed a simulator in his house, allowing for quick tune-ups whenever he had a few minutes to spare. A more well-rounded Uihlein entered the new year, and after a runner-up finish in Louisiana, he captured his second Korn Ferry Tour title at the inaugural MGM Resorts Championship at Paiute in early April, carding 16-under 272 to finish four strokes clear of David Lipsky and Jamie Lovemark.

The victory moved Uihlein within striking distance of earning back stronger TOUR status via The 25 this summer— he is playing this season on a conditional TOUR category, splitting time between the PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour. Uihlein parlayed his Vegas success into the following week, teaming with fellow Massachusetts native Richy Werenski to finish third at the TOUR’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Suddenly, Uihlein moved within striking distance of earning full TOUR membership via the top-125 on the FedExCup at season’s end. (He stood 159th in FedExCup points through May.) Two paths to the same goal for the short-game wizard whose entire package is rounding into fine form. “I’ve been trying to get a lot shallower,” reflected Uihlein after his victory at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort (Sun Mountain). “I did some little things in the offseason, installed a simulator, and now if I’m home and want to hit balls at nine at night or seven in the morning, I can keep the minor things in check.”

A red-hot finish from Peter Uihlein left him four strokes clear of David Lipsky and Jamie Lovemark to win the MGM Resorts Championship at Paiute Golf Resort.
