HOW RORY MCILROY WON
After staging comebacks in three straight matches, Rory McIlroy took control on the front nine in the final against Gary Woodland and won 4 and 2 at Harding Park in San Francisco. In the first round after preliminary pool play cut the field to 16, McIlroy was 2-down through 16 against Billy Horschel before winning 17, 18, and the first extra hole. McIlroy was 1-down with two to play against Paul Casey in the quarterfinals in a match he eventually won in 22 holes. McIlroy finished birdie-eagle to beat Jim Furyk 1 up in the semifinals before winning four straight holes on the front nine against Woodland to avoid having to go to the wire in the final. McIlroy went 1 up in the final when Woodland bogeyed the fourth hole, and McIlroy then posted three straight birdies to go 4 up. McIlroy had to come back Sunday morning for the final hole of his suspended quarterfinal match before beating Furyk and Woodland on the same day. In pool play, McIlroy needed a comeback to beat Brandt Snedeker, 2 up, but posted lopsided wins over Jason Dufner (5 and 4) and Hideki Matsuyama (6 and 5). PGA TOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE 2015/2016, Part 1
