DAVE, 21 STUDENT, NON-SMOKER I’m a college senior majoring in theatre and set design. When I’m not working on my craft, you can find me hiking, biking, or surfing. After a long day of school and sports, I like to kick back with my Yorkie and watch reality TV.

BEN, 26 PROFESSIONAL, NON-SMOKER I’m a screenwriter looking for a roomie to set up shop with me in my bad-ass beach pad. I’m active in local theatre, and just started surfing lessons. I love animals, and enjoy hiking, camping, and chilling out at home.

EDITOR’S LETTER | winter break 2015

Welcome! Check those stockings for coal because the holidays have arrived! The best part about the holidays is going home to spend it with family and friends while indulging in some nostalgia by staying in your old room and seeing that old mystery stain that somehow got on your floor in junior high. Even if you were naughty rather than nice this year, College News’ winter issue is jam-packed with some nice treats for you.

Group CEO & Publisher Kevin Harrington Editor Jess Smith

We had a chat with the incomparable punk-rap sensation, Tech N9ne who talked to us about Strange Music and his blossoming acting career on p.8. Although brand new clothes and shoes seem like a good idea to indulge in during the holidays, our story on saving money during the holidays will surely be beneficial in helping you budget yourself and resisting the urge to splurge on p. 17. You can also save money on your holiday decorations by tapping into your creative side and doing some DIY decorations with our exclusive How-To guide on p27.

Editorial Contributors Reel Robinson Corey Demaline Jessica Gavrilovski Alyssa Lee Danielle Dabrio-Carroll David Morales Julia Johnston Donald Bird Jaicel Asegurado Sarah Eleid

You may have some New Year’s resolutions in mind, but let’s be honest—they probably aren’t realistic! This is why College News has put together some realistic New Year’s resolution that you should be able to stick to on p.36! Losing weight may be one of your resolutions, and you can begin on this early by doing some indoor exercises that we highlight in our article on p. 41. For our exclusive cover story we chatted with hip hop sensation Ty Dolla $ign about his recent album and dive into a day in his world on p52.

EAR CANDY | tech n9ne interview

Tech N9ne Talks Strange Music By Julia E. A. Johnston

Tech N9ne could be the hardest working guy in the music industry, but the Kansas City rapper, actor, and founder of the record label Strange Music, would say it’s all because of his team. That’s just the kind of person, Tech N9ne is. I learned a lot from our interview, which left me motivated, inspired, and enlightened. Someone get this man a talk show or a book deal. Only he could handle more things on his plate.

8

the way we wrote the hook [you can]. We had a guy named Adrian Truth write the hook, for The Weeknd. You know what I’m saying but we told The Weeknd, if you want to change any of the words you can, know what I mean. They were waiting on me. Schoolboy Q couldn’t find the time to do it so the track just laid there, you know what I’m saying, like stagnant. Like damn, man it’s a wonderful track. So ever since Special Effects came out it just been sitting. When it was time to do Strangeulation Vol. II my producer Seven was like, “Man, I gotta tell you ‘We Just Wanna Party’ is such a big song, man. We have to do it for this album. I think it fits now”. Traditionally, I don’t use tracks that I have for an album prior because our sound is always changing but the song as far as the feeling of Strangeulation Vol. II...was right.

*5! Wow, so, it was originally supposed to be on Special Effects album, which came out in May and now you have Strangeulation Vol. II album coming out in November? ;LJO 5 UL! Yes *5! That’s two albums in a year. That’s insane. ;LJO 5 UL! I know. I know, man. You know what I mean. It’s so weird because to do a big album like Special Effects, man, and then a month later you have this elite album and you’re on every song. It’s like 23 selections and you’re on every song and you have solos on it as well. That’s an amazing thing and for it to be elite and not half ass you know. I have this energy man. I have this new energy that when the music is right, I just want to go. I’m going even harder than ever still. I’m

I M AG ES: J UGG R N AU T S O U N D

*VSSLNL 5L^Z! You just released “We Just Wanna Party” in mid-October. Can you tell us a little bit about that? ;LJO 5 UL! Oh, yeah man. Wonderful song man, but the way it happen is crazy because it was actually supposed to be for the album that I dropped in May, Special Effects that was one of the party songs of the record. What “Hood Go Crazy” is, “No K” and this, that, or the other. That [“We Just Wanna Party”] was in that bunch of songs. You know what I mean? It was originally supposed to have The Weeknd singing the hook and Schoolboy Q on the third verse. You know what I mean? I sent it to The Weeknd and they loved it. His people, they loved it but I told them I’m going to get Schoolboy Q on the verse then I’m going to send out another version and then we can move and if you want to change any of

interested to see what’s going to come after this. It’s crazy. *5! What makes a Strange Music artist? ;LJO 5 UL! What makes a Strange Music artist? For one, when it comes to the rappers or MCs I check the lyricism, you know what I mean, being able to write their own music and being able to tell wonderful stories because you have to be a wonderful storyteller to keep people engaged. You do have those things, the strict requirement is you have to be able to convey all that live. All the artists from Rittz, to Ces Cru, to Krizz Kaliko, to Stevie Stone, all of them man. I’ve seen live first. ¡MAYDAY!, you know what I’m saying, I’ve seen live first, because what they do live is super effective. That’s one of the major requirements, they have to be able to convey that message they got out in the studio on stage to the fans....I’m sorry I keep clearing my throat because I just woke up and they told me “Okay go right into the interview.” I’m like “okay!” *5! No worries. I know you just had a few big shows as well, so I understand. What is it like wearing all of those hats? You know, being a founder of Strange Music, being a rapper, getting into acting. How do you balance all of that stuff? ;LJO 5 UL! I don’t balance it. It’s hard. If I didn’t have my partner Travis O’Guin, you know, he’s like the number one multi-tasker. He keeps me involved in all the business that’s going on with Strange while I’m out here on the road. I’m on my Canadian tour now, on my tour bus, so I just got off the phone with him before I got on the phone with you. It’s like he keeps me involved or up-to-date or up to speed with everything that we’re doing or when we’re going to move on everything. What’s going on with our lawyers, everything. I’m pretty much out here touching the fans like crazy, you know what I mean? Thinking of new ideas as we move. I wouldn’t say I balance it, you know what I’m saying, we have a good team to where we can all do our jobs plus a couple more jobs and still be effective.

Terrance was that everything you put out in the universe is what you get back. My whole career, from my first album, Anghellic, my first major album, Anghellic, good and bad. You know what I mean. All 6’s and 7’s, good and bad. Evil Brain Angel Heart (E.B.A.H.), good and bad. Klusterfuk, good and bad. My whole journey in this music career has been a fight between good and evil within myself. My heart hates my brain, to my brain makes me do things that causes my heart pain. That constant fight, that’s what I put out in the world and it touched Darren because he’s from my town. He’s from Overland Park, Kansas and that’s not far from Kansas City, Missouri. He was a fan back then when he was younger so when it was time for him to do Saw and do all his wonderful movies and when he got to the Devil’s Carnival he thought of Tech N9ne. I put that energy out there, that good and bad energy. It was meant to happen. That’s what I got back. I find myself being the librarian in heaven [in Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival]. That’s funny. As Satan is trying to fight God, you know what I mean. It’s the Tech N9ne story. That’s what I put out in the universe long ago and what I do today, so I think it’s not a coincidence that I’m in that movie about the fight between good and evil. *5! Going into your creative process, what is that like and what sort of helps you generate the best music possible? ;LJO 5 UL! I live my life. Luckily I have a producer named Seven that is ambidextrous when it comes to beats. He’s versatile. He happens to give me beats that motivate me to want to write a song. Sometimes I think of a beat idea and I call him and I give it to him like. “this is how I think the beat should go

and then you can do the music like this. This is what the title is” or whatever. Most of the time he’s sending me beats like, “what do you think about this one? What do you think about this one? What do you think about this one? I think this is how we should go” and I’m like “yes, that’s it.” Most of the time I’m like, “yes this is it.” *5! What advice would you have for young creators? ;LJO 5 UL! Young creators? You have to find your individuality. People have similarities. One thing that is similar, even though we come from different walks of life and different cultures and different colors and this, that, or the other. We have these things in common, we act as people and emotions. Everybody has sadness. Everybody has madness. Everybody has gladness or happiness. Everybody has confusion, anger, so for a young creator write what you know. Quincy Jones taught me that in ‘97 when I signed with him back in the day. It worked for me writing my life. We wonder why a lot of people with mental illnesses might attend our shows because that’s the energy we put out there, me and Krizz Kaliko. We’re going through things in our head. We’re dysfunctional. We’re alone. Those people that hear us connect to it. Now, that’s just one dimension of me, the sadness and the darkness and this, that, or the other. What I tell up and coming writers write what you know. Don’t copy anybody. Of course they say the music just recycles but you can have your own thing because I got my own thing and it’s working and I’m blessed. Just write what you know and people will forever feel you. I will pass on what Quincy Jones told me. cn

*5! Let’s talk about the film you’re in, Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival. I spoke with director, Darren Bousman, a couple weeks ago actually. How was that experience for you and how did you get involved with that? ;LJO 5 UL! Like I told Terrance, who is the devil in the movie, at the after party after the screening in L.A. on August 11. He said, “how do you feel, man, being on the screen for the first time?” I was drunk, I went “ it was wonderful man!” I wish I could’ve said more. I told him that it was fate that I was in this movie but what I really wanted to tell Darren and

His early years with the Lakers were rough although being a part of the fan favorite squad they struggled to get over the hump against Western conference juggernauts Utah Jazz and Seattle Supersonics. In the 1999-2000 NBA season, Kobe and Shaq lead the Lakers to their first NBA title (Indiana Pacers) and cemented their names among the hierarchy of basketball greatness. They didn’t stop with 1 title they proceeded to win 3 straight titles defeating an Allen Iverson led Philadelphia 76ers team (2001) and the New Jersey Nets (2002) led by Jason Kidd who were no match for their talent. Kobe became the youngest player in history (age 23) with 3 NBA championships. THE LEGACY OF “THE BLACK MAMBA” So now that we have past the early accolades of Kobe it is time we talk about the Black Mamba. After winning those titles the Lakers then went through a period of uncertainty and disorganization in the locker room.

10

Shaq and Kobe began to beef internally causing a rip in the locker room. This eventually led to Shaq being dealt after losing to the Detroit Pistons in 5 games in the 2004-2005 NBA finals. From there the pressure was put on Kobe’s shoulders to uphold the Laker tradition. It took some time but Kobe being Kobe was able to withstand the storm. From 2005-2008 the Lakers wallowed in mediocrity. Losing to rivals the Phoenix Suns seemingly every chance they had. On the other hand Kobe began to dominate on both sides of the ball. Winning All-star and All defensive honors seemingly every season. . WHAT MAKES HIM MJ? Kobe has been able to survive rape allegations and bad press by the media for 2 decades. Staying healthy for the majority of his career and never really seeing a decline in his play. He is still one of the hardest players to defend and his work ethic is only rivaled by the great names that have come from his era like Ray Lewis, Floyd Mayweather, and Derek Jeter. Just like those 3 I just named Kobe deserves to leave this generation with the proper respect and admiration that signifies his legacy. Kobe comes into what may be his final season at 37 year’s old coming off 2 injury prone seasons in a row. I only hope he can perform to the level that leaves a lasting mark on the younger generation for decades to come. MJ is because his name will go on for years to come as it should. He will be arguably number 1, 2 or 3 in history when it is all said and done. Kobe “Bean” Bryant the last of a great generation. His personal accolades alone make for a great argument. cn

obe “Bean” Bryant or the Black Mamba as many of us know him as is coming to the close of his legendary career in the NBA. One of the most prolific scorers and playmakers to ever step on the basketball court is closing in on the climax of career that spans 20 seasons and has seen him come from the little 17 year old who struggled to find his comfort zone on the court with the Lakers to one of the most outspoken generals to lead a team. He heralds 5 NBA Championships, 2 Finals MVP trophies, 1 Scoring title and 1 season MVP to name some of his more impressive hardware.

ace it; we all have a little bit of an adrenaline junkie in all of us. There is something about the cold bitterness of winter that makes people want to explore their inner Evel Knievel, which is why sports like snowboarding and sledding become everyone’s go-to sport once the snow starts to fall. However, if plain old sledding isn’t doing it for you, we have some ideas for extreme winter sports that can really test the limits. ICE CLIMBING If you are jaded from plain old rock climbing then ice climbing is definitely something you want to try out. For obvious reasons, winter is ice-climbing season, and two of the most popular areas to ice climb are Ouray Ice Park in Ouray, Colorado and the Frankenstein

SNOW KAYAKING It is hard to believe that what you can do in water you are able to do in solid snow, but this is definitely the case with snow kayaking. Snow kayaking is pretty much self explanatory, you use kayaks and paddles, but rather than being in a body of water you are in the snow! If you live in a Northern climate than you can probably find some good spots to snow kayak, but do not forget your helmet, as this activity can get pretty dangerous/ ICE DIVING Definitely not for the faint of heart, ice diving is truly an experience that can’t be compared to any other under water experience. Ice diving is on the very extreme spectrum of winter action sports, so it is imperative that you are an advanced diver and are able to have access to the special equipment needed to safely be exposed to the extremely low temperature of the water. Temperatures of the water can be as cold as -1.8° C.

KITEBOARDING Mix together snowboarding and kitesurfing and this fun combo is one for the extreme column. Kiteboarding can be deemed successful if you have the proper equipment and of course the right element — plenty of wind. MATTRESS SLEDDING If you don’t have money to do all of the aforementioned action sports then mattress sledding is definitely for you. Pretty much all you would need for this is an air mattress, a helmet for safety, goggles and some courage to participate in this action sport. If you find a hill that has an ample amount of snow and some friends to hop on it to create a good amount of speed to really get that adrenaline pumping. cn

Hockey Season Round Up BY ALYSSA LEE

Winter is finally here, and that calls for celebration and cheer. Fans have been anticipating the hockey season all summer and are keeping their eyes out for players who will lead their team to the Stanley Cup. Here are just a few stars to watch out for in the 2015-16 season.

JOHNNY GAUDREAU, CALGARY FLAMES Managing a regular day job while attending Gaudreau has shown that he has all star potential with 24 goals and 64 points obtained last year. He was the first Flames rookie to score his 50th point of the season since Jarome Iginla in 1996-97. Gaudreau could once again help his team reach the playoffs this season.

Š 123R F

DAVID PASTRNAK, BOSTON BRUINS Pastrnak’s NHL career is just in the beginning stages, but already he shows great offensive skill and speed. His forechecking and shot instincts are what will help him score goals and create opportunities for linemates. SHEA WEBER, NASHVILLE PREDATORS Shea Weber, a Norris Trophy winner, scored 45 points last season along with a +15 rating, making him one of the most talented defensemen in the league. His ability to sustain a solid defense will be needed in order to take his team to the playoffs.

NIKITA KUCHEROV, TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING Last year Kucherov scored 29 goals and 65 points, also tying for the NHL lead in plus-minus with a +38 rating. With his energy and natural ability to score goals, Kucherov is a player that has the potential to take the Lightning to the top. ANDERS LEE, NEW YORK ISLANDERS Lee has been under the radar up until his performance last season where he scored 25 goals and notched 41 points. As a young forward playing alongside talents such as John Tavares and Kyle Okposo, Lee has shown his ability to score and his potential to become a dominant player. MILAN LUCIC, LOS ANGELES KINGS Lucic has shown he is a powerhouse player and a force to be reckoned with. Since being traded to the Kings, he has already made headlines involving the unquestionable strength he possesses; maybe he will gear that energy towards helping the Kings win another Cup. cn collegenews.com | Winter Break 2015

MONEY & CAREERS

Saving Money During the Holidays BY JESSICA GAVRILOVSKI

W

ith the holidays fast approaching, every college student will be scrambling to find ways to save money while still being able to purchase the gifts they feel their loved ones deserve. In reality, that’s a battle we all struggle to find balance with, even beyond college. There’s truly no need to break your bank account when shopping for those perfect gifts, but there are ways to save and spend your money wisely. 1 MAKE AND PRIORITIZE A “SHOPPING FOR” LIST: write up a list of people you plan on getting gifts for this year. Think carefully and thoroughly on everyone in your life you want to buy for this year, and do it early on as to avoid the last minute “oh no, I forgot so-and-so!” spending splurge. I’d even go the extra mile of adding a dollar amount limit you’re willing to spend on each person, as to avoid over-gifting. 2 START SHOPPING EARLY: the earlier, the better. It’s never too early to think about gifts for your friends and family; the longer you wait, the more stressed out you feel and the more tempted you become to purchase just any old thing. You also become careless of how much you’re spending - so start early! You’ll feel more relaxed and save money in the long run.

3 USE ONLINE RESOURCES/DIY GIFTS: the Internet is a vast and endless place, where you can easily research “how to’s” with making simple gifts, as well as take advantage of websites such as belovedshirts.com to create custom t-shirts and more for your loved ones for relatively cheap! 4 AVOID SPLURGES AND TEMPTATIONS: sure, those commercials and advertisements LOVE to point out how flashy and new the latest Apple product is after you’ve got all your gifts ready to go - but remember your expenses! Resist the temptation of splurging on expensive items you may not really need to buy, whether for yourself, or for others. 5 SPEND YOUR TIME: there’s no material item that can ever truly replace making hot chocolate and cookies or watching movies on a lazy Sunday with your friends and family. Time is a precious thing; spend wisely! No matter what your financial situation is, there is no gift better than spending the holidays with the ones you care about, and care for you as well.

Happy holidays! cn

POLITICS | freedom of speech

Freedom of speech on campus

Freedom of expression and campus speech codes BY DAVID MORALES

16

administrative attempts to punish and silence speech are common in academia. There are many concerns over the regulation and rules of speech; however, to ban or punish speech based upon its content can never be justified. With that said, the limitations to freedom of speech creates a conundrum for university administrators when creating and regulating speech codes on campus. Many incidences on campuses throughout the nation illustrate the challenge to address differences of opinion. The question administrators try to answer is whether speech reflects a natural by-product of a vibrant, free society or hurtful hate speech designed to target minorities on campus. On October 20, 2015, student leaders at the University of Mississippi voted to remove the state flag, which contains the Confederate battle emblem, from campus. They claim that their academic progress may suffer if fears, tensions, and conflicts create a hostile learning environment. Attitudes toward the Confederate flag and other symbols of the Confederacy are changing rapidly after, Dylann Roof, shot nine black church members in Charleston, South Carolina. Once student leaders signed the

resolution, university administrators acted on it and on October 26 2015, the flag was removed from campus. The argument, grounded in the need to foster an atmosphere of respect that is welcoming to everyone, resonates well with school administrators. Nevertheless, they should acknowledge both the concerns and the thoughtfulness of those persuaded for the need of regulation. The students at Ole Miss have their work cut out for them and represent the challenge students and administrator’s face when academic freedom reaffirms the necessity of free speech on campuses across the nation. cn

reedom of speech is a fundamental freedom and a human right in our country. It allows individuals to communicate opinions or ideas without fear of censorship or restraint as defined by community standards. There is no better place where this right should be more valued and protected than our nation’s public colleges and universities. An institution of higher learning fails to fulfill its mission if it asserts the power to censor ideas. These concepts, rooted in the belief that an atmosphere conducive to respectful and diversity, reveals the true nature of an institution. Freedom of speech is constantly challenged on campuses throughout the United States. Most colleges and university administrators try to determine what is considered safe speech, to promote a welcoming environment for everyone. They analyze the substance and style of speech and implement policy through the use of speech codes. Many institutions maintain biased speech codes that prohibit what should be protected speech. As a result, colleges and universities have established free speech zones, confining free speech to assigned areas on campus. Today,

LIFESTYLE | final exams

Exam 101: Surviving Finals BY ALYSSA LEE

It seems impossible not to panic when finals week approaches. The best thing you can do is trust yourself and take care of your health, among many other tips that might help you out this year.

2 Get a study group together. You can compare notes and knowledge, learn from other classmates, and the best part is you have a group of supporters who are going through and feeling the exact same things you are. You are not alone! 3 Take breaks between studying. It’s best not to go over three hours without taking at least 10 minutes to get up and stretch, get

18

a drink, or simply rest your eyes. You don’t want to cram your brain with too much information in one sitting. 4 Get at least 8 hours of sleep. This is essential for surviving and doing well on final exams! When your brain has time to rest and refresh, it gives you the ability to focus and think clearly. You don’t want to be tired, cranky, and forgetful when finals week hits. 5 Don’t forget to breathe! After you have completed and turned in a final exam, focus on the next exam or any other task you have to do. Don’t ask your friends what they put on their tests, and don’t go back to your notes to see if you got a question right. You will end up worrying even more over something you can’t change. Moving forward and taking a breather will be more to your advantage than

focusing on what you just turned in. Remember you are not alone going through the stress and torment of finals week. Keep your friends close and your notes closer. Never doubt yourself; you’ve come this far and it’s too late now to lose your mind over finals! cn

LIFESTYLE | DIY decorations

DIY Holiday Decorations BY JESSICA GAVRILOVSKI

B

eing festive is one of the most vital parts about celebrating the holiday season, and what better what to celebrate than by decorating! Whether it’s your dorm room, apartment, car, whatever, here’s a few DIY and easy holiday decorations to help you “deck-the-halls!” START BY PLANNING OUT COLOR SCHEMES: A simple change from your everyday curtains to green or red curtains (or any holiday pattern of your choice) can drastically alter your living environment and brighten your decor! Do the same with plates and cups switch out your everyday ones with ones with plain red or green to get things started! MAKE YOUR OWN STOCKINGS! Whether it’s grabbing an old pair of denim jeans you don’t wear anymore, taking an old “ugly” sweater and stitching out a stocking shape, or finally making use for those random piles of ribbons you have in your craft-cubby, there’s tons of tutorials on how to make your own stockings to hang above your fireplace waiting for you online! Read more: http:// www.diynetwork.com/how-to/make-and-decorate/ entertaining/diy-christmas-stocking-patterns-in-abunch-of-styles-pictures

ALONG WITH MAKING YOUR OWN STOCKINGS, YOU CAN ALSO MAKE YOUR OWN ORNAMENTS! Whether from paper, with personal engravings, or from recycled bottle caps, get full tutorials on how to make these ornaments and more right here: http://www. goodhousekeeping.com/holidays/christmas-ideas/ g393/homemade-christmas-ornaments/ OPT FOR BUYING A FAKE, REUSABLE TREE INSTEAD OF A REAL TREE. Doing so not only cuts down on the environment, but also reduces your time and money on buying a tree every year. This way, you have one less thing to worry about during the holidays, as well as being able to keep the tree up (or take it down; to each their own) as long as you please! For small dorm rooms or apartment buildings, opt for buying the smaller, fake trees, that can fit in a small corner or on your desk - that way there’s not a huge headache on where to find space and disagreement with any roommates. With these ideas and more, you’re bound to have a festive holiday season!cn

LIFESTYLE | renting apartments

Tips On

Renting Your First

O

ne of the most exciting times in a young adult’s life is renting your first apartment. There are many factors you have to take into account when looking for what is ultimately your first home! Do you want a roommate? Do you want a garden apartment or do you want to live in a high rise? Don’t let these choices stress you out too much, we have you covered with some tips on how to go about renting your very first apartment. 1. Pick a neighborhood that fits your personality and needs. Do you want a neighborhood in the city or a neighborhood that is in a small town? Do you need access to public transportation or parking spots? Think about your personality and what type of people you want to live around. If you find yourself enjoying coffee shops and trendier neighborhoods then you may want to research what neighborhoods are best for this. 2. Check the safety of the neighborhood you are moving to. Check the crime rate of the area you will be moving to. If there are armed robberies everyday then this may be an area you won’t want to be living. If you are living by a college campus, make sure there are

22

ample amounts of emergency buttons around. 3. Determine your rental budget. This is probably the most important step when apartment shopping. Break down your entirely monthly income and estimate how much your bills will cost. Think about extra-curricular and extraneous expenses, will you still be able to afford rent? This important since you don’t want to sign a lease for an apartment that you can’t pay for! 4. Figure out how you want to start the rental process. Starting the actual search process can be stressful, especially when it is your first go around. If you have the time, look through classifieds in your local paper or use apartment search engines to find an apartment that meets all of your needs. If you don’t have the time to search for an apartment consider using an apartment search agent such as Apartment People. 5. Look over your lease thoroughly. Before you sign anything in life, you need to ensure that you look over the document. Make sure you look over every detail of your lease carefully because this is a commitment that often lasts more than a year! cn

How To Throw an Awesome

Cocktail Party BY SARAH ELEID

1. If you’re a guy hosting one, plan on a TON of girls showing up. When girls think cocktail parties they are immediately transported to “The Great Gatsby” era, where handsome men in bowties are ready to sweep them off their feet (hopefully while still sober), and dance the night away. And if you’re a girl hosting one, refer to the above statement. MEN IN BOWTIES. 2. You will definitely be the coolest person on campus. Trust me, everyone will ditch the frat parties and flock to your humble abode, just for the chance to see what adulting really feels like. And for the fancy drinks of course. After all, we can only handle so much Bud Light and Captain Morgan. 3. The cleanup will be so much easier. No crushed beer cans all over the floor, no vodka spilled on the couch and you probably won’t have anyone puking in your bathroom. Ok, so now that you’ve decided to throw one, what’s the first step? The most important things you’ll need are cute martini glasses, napkins, bowls and plates for snacks, and the actual alcohol. You can find super cheap glasses and plates at your local dollar store (maybe even get nice disposable plastic ones), or if you’re lucky you might find some on clearance at Target or Walmart. For the food just stick with regular party appetizers like pretzels, nuts, pizza cut into small pieces, cheese and crackers and some veggies and ranch for the health conscious. For the alcohol, it’s best to buy bottles of champagne, tequila or cava and then some fruit juices and sparkling nectars so the guests can make their own fancy drinks. You can buy a few plastic punch bowls, fill them with the juice and

24

ice, and then set up a makeshift bar where your guests can be their own bartenders. For garnishes, use fruit slices, berries, mint leaves and lemon peels to top off drinks. Here is a sample menu:

SAMPLE MENU Turkey/Ham and Cheese Plate t Trader Joe’s Four Cheese Pizza (cut into bite size squares) t Hummus/Ranch and Veggie Plate t Classic Sangria (red wine, brandy, seltzer water, with apple, lemon and orange cubes)

After you’ve planned the menu, now all you have to do is actually invite people. Instead of just a basic text, make a creative invitation and send it to your guests over Instagram or Facebook messenger. Enjoy! cn

think people often underestimate the classiness of college students. We are stereotyped as being boozy, bar hopping kids who don’t know the first thing about being an adult. So what better way to challenge this unflattering stereotype than to host our own cocktail party? Here are the pros:

Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat – Awesome Winter Music Festivals 2015 BY DONALD BIRD

Don’t let the cold kill the music festival vibe.

MOVEMENT FESTIVAL EUROPE – TORINO, ITALY – OCT. 31 2015 Yeah, I know this is a bit of a hike for a music festival. Of course, unless you are back packing around Europe anyways or happen to live in the area. The cool part about this festival is that it is only 26 Euros and it is also like a cousin to the Movement Festival that goes down in Detroit, Michigan. If you dig 26

house and techno music and have the means to jump over to Torino, what are you waiting for? The Line ups include Detroit legend Derrick May, Tale of US, The House that Chicago Built (Derrick Carter, DJ Sneak and Lil Louis) and more. For the full line up and details check out www.movement.it/2015/it VOODOO FEST – NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA –OCT. 30 – NOV. 1ST New Orleans is notorious for it’s party scene and it only makes sense that it would have a kick a$$ music festival during Halloween. Tickets for the event are from $73 -$525, which is a good range when you see the range of performers attending. Imagine a Marti Gras scene jamming to Chance the rapper, Zac Brown Band, Third Eye Blind, DeadMau5, Ozzy Osbourne, Girl Talk and tons more. For more information and specific line up details check out www.worshipthemusic.com. SNOW GLOBE - SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIFORNIA – DEC. 29TH – DEC. 31ST. It requires a town like South Lake Tahoe

to completely embrace all facets of festival culture with this ski/snowboard adventure and music festival extravaganza. Tickets for the event are between $169- $369. Discounted mountain tickets are provided for festival goers to shred during the day on 9,000 acres of powder. The facility has four stages with ski/snowboard demos, plenty of areas to eat and drink and is centrally located near Nevada if feeling cheeky enough to gamble. At night check out world class dj’s like Skrillex, Atmosphere, Thomas Jack and Bro Safari and enjoy a top notch fire work display. For more details and specific line ups check out www.snowglobemusicfestival.com If none of these adventures into music bliss sound like fun do not stop here. A festival awaits. With patience and diligence an event that lights up the night is a back pack and bus/car/plane/train away. And if that sounds like too much work, don’t worry summer will be right around the corner. Happy Festivaling. cn

at, Sleep, Rave, Repeat. Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat. If only this was a recipe for success. Nobel peace prizes going to amped up party girls and party boys…talk about a perfect Utopia! However at some point it becomes eat, work/school, Facebook/Twitter/Youtube, sleep, repeat. But it is nice to know that just because the leaves fall from the trees, we don’t have to stop going into dark places with glow sticks, wearable candy and vitamin C. It may require a little planning and some disposable income but the party can continue all year long with these music festivals, as suggested by the Music Festival Junkies website.

Are you happy with your hair? Is your hair happy with you? Your incredible hair is an extension of your body and should be cared for just as you care for your eyes, your hands and your heart. But we need to understand our hair before we can truly nourish it. Women today find that their hair is dry, frizzy and breaks easily despite spending over $80 billion a year on hair care products, needlessly stressing themselves, and their hair, every day. Hair Truth #1. Your hair is never so vulnerable and damage prone as when it is wet. How you dry it is one of the most critical steps to caring for your hair. If you rub it at this delicate point or use your regular ‘ole bath towel, that was never meant for your hair, you can cause irreparable damage that all those hair products can’t fix. Changing your hair drying routine and adding in a hair towel can make the most difference to the health and beauty of your hair. AQUIS Hair Towels and Hair Turbans are made with special ultra-fine fibers called AQUITEX that’s woven tightly together to create these channels inside the fabric that wick water out and away from your hair faster and more gently than any other material protecting your hair from the damage we spend thousands of dollars to repair. Most importantly you save precious time in the morning when you could be doing more important things like cramming for a test, yoga or meditating. Change the way you dry your hair and experience better hair days!

LIFESTYLE | new year’s resolution

LET’S BE REAL: REALISTIC NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION BY TAHYIRA SAVANNA

I

t’s a tired old story, around this time of the year you hear everyone talking about what they’re giving up for the next year. It is always something very far away from what the person currently does. If you say you want to read more books, you probably don’t read anything outside of a magazine or tabloid right now. If you say you want to stop watching so much TV, you probably have an iPad and a smart phone with Hulu and Netflix. And then, the best one of them all: The “I’m going to start going to the gym” New Years resolution. The last time you’ve probably saw a gym was when you zoomed past the closest one to your house. You never actually stepped foot inside it but admire its presence in your neighborhood from afar.

1

Instead of promising to join a gym try following more fitness inspiration across your social media accounts. There is so many ordinary people (meaning non celebrity types) that document their weight loss progress. It is a perfect way to stay inspired for 365 days. By watching others accomplish what you want to accomplish for yourself is a much better push into reality. I’m sure by mid January you’ll be well into your fitness regimen. © 123R F

The idea of starting a new year is like a reset button. We think we can just jump into the things that we know we want to change but that’s

not realistic. Psychologists argue that it takes us 28 days (4 weeks) to break a habit. It’s the method behind Beyonce’s latest diet crazy, 28 days vegan, where by day 29 you will no longer feel restricted. Your current behavior is already set. The same thought process should be taken when coming up with things you want to change to better yourself in the coming year. So here’s my “keeping it real” New Years resolution list.

Don’t delete your cable account just yet, because then you’ll end up watching television at the gas pump. You can try something a little less drastic like stopping the reminder emails for latest shows on your Hulu account. Netflix does it also so you can suspend those as well. Along with deleting your “Don’t forget to watch” emails you need to find something to replace the time you spend in from the tube. You can try cooking bigger meals everyday, ones that require multiple preparations. If you’re not into cooking you can find another home based hobby to over indulge in, like knitting, or scrape booking. Eating healthier is usually a separate resolution then working out or starting the gym because it requires different restrictions. Either way, you’re not just going to just stop eating that slice of pizza two times a week. Don’t stop the pizza but try adding a salad. Yuck, right? There are ways to essentially make anything taste better; You just have to research. If you incorporate three healthy items to your week, you’ll begin training your mind and body to dislike the fatty greasy foods that makes us feel awful afterwards. Maybe your resolution is to raise your Grade Point Average so; you’re planning to never sleep again. Wrong, instead of becoming a zombie, remove the distractions that you have during you’re current allotted studying time. Maybe your roommates play loud music, try studying in the hallway or heading to

3

the library. You probably don’t need to study longer but need to focus much more. Finding love is another big one, obviously for those who don’t have anyone to kiss at midnight. That’s all good. You’ll never find it if you’re looking but everybody needs somebody (cue the Blues Brothers) so try taking different routes to work or to class. Stop in the other Starbucks, you never know who you might run into. Dine in new neighborhoods. Basically, increase your personal exposure level.

5

In 2016, let us all vow to keep it a little more honest with ourselves and the goals we seek to accomplish. By taking these steps towards real changes daily, you can eliminate the feeling of failure somewhere around mid February. cn

DATING

IN THE COLD MONTHS BY DANIELLE DABRIO-CARROLL

Couple season is here my friends! Time for warm winter nights, hot winter drinks and even hotter winter dates. Only problem is that winter dates have become so cliché haven’t they? Ice skating, hockey games, snowshoeing and carriage rides through the park. Yea they’re romantic, but can we make the first three dates more creative and fun? FIRST DATE- SNOW DAY

© 123R F

Remember those days of your youth when it would snow all night and you spent a free day goofing off? Just because we’re all grown up doesn’t mean they have to end. Instead of trying to think of where you can go out that night, spend the day in. Start by making breakfast together, go sledding, paint the snow (use a few spray bottles full of water and food coloring and go to town on undisturbed snow), then finish off your adult snow day with indoor s’mores using the stove or an unscented candle and cuddling up on the couch in a blanket to warm yourselves up.

SEX & DATING | winter dates

SECOND DATE- OH NO WE’RE SNOWED IN!

This also involves a couch, blankets, hot chocolate, and two great people to share them. If you’re not ready to brave the cold of the season just yet, have a more mellow night filled with games like Loaded Questions, Scrabble, Never Have I Ever, or you can even get in your pjs and spend a little time watching cartoons, because who doesn’t love Cartoon Network and 90’s Nick?

THIRD DATE- POWER OUTAGE

While we’re stuck inside this last date can go a little further. All the lights are out (no cheating) and dinner is eaten by candlelight (made… or ordered beforehand), ghost stories, shadow puppets, glow stick jewelry or anything glow in the dark, and of course truth or dare. Now I know that these may seem a little immature at first, but having fun and getting to know each other are what the first three dates are about. What better way to do that than to forget the pressure that comes with it by getting comfortable and allowing yourself let loose (or get cozy)? cn

Pressure to Get Married:

Is There Really a Perfect Age to Get Hitched? BY COREY DEMALINE

34

© 123R F

I

t seems as though a majority of our friends get married between the ages of 22 and 30. For those of us who find ourselves still searching for that perfect someone we feel an enormous amount of pressure to say “I do”. Whether people admit it or not, society has us convinced that marriage is a must when you’re in your 20s. When we hit a certain age in our lives and still use the phrases “I’m single” or “I don’t have any kids” or “We just broke up”, people begin to judge your priorities. Sad, but true. With all of this pressure to settle down, is there really a perfect age to tie-the-knot? Just about everyone will say no, but let’s be honest, a lot of them are thinking yes. Why all this pressure? Is it because friends are worried you’ll begin feeling left out? Is it because they don’t want you having children too late in the game? Or is it because they feel they can no longer relate to your life? Or you can’t relate to theirs? To a certain extent, all of the above questions are true. To answer, here’s the greatest response you could ever give: It’s your life, not theirs. Every single person on the face of the planet marches to the beat of their own drum. It may not seem like it when just about all of your friends got married the same year and popped out kids the following, but as a couple they made the decision to do so, just like you. So what if you’re 28 years old and have no desire to get married? Maybe you’re not ready to settle down. Maybe you still have some soul-searching to do before getting hitched. And so what if you’re 32 and do not have any kids? Some people are not meant to be a mother or father. I’d rather people not have kids than have them and be terrible parents. If you find conversations with your married friends to be somewhat dull and script-like, find new friends! This doesn’t mean you have to cut them out of your life. You’ll always love and care for them as you always have. You just need to surround yourself with people who relate more with your lifestyle and goals. Not everyone has the same plan and this is okay! It’s what makes the world unique. So stop putting so much pressure on yourself to be like your friends. Just because it seems they are the All-American family doesn’t mean your life is of any less value. Do your own thing and figure out your own way in this crazy world. Be happy for those friends who have found that special someone and tied-the-knot. Marriage isn’t for everyone. Maybe you want to get married, maybe you don’t. Maybe you’re the type who doesn’t believe in marriage but believes in love. Who cares? Your life is just as beautiful. Remember this when you attend another wedding next month (because you probably will).cn

other issues within the queer community and for the community to come together.” Jager expressed happiness with how people reacted to the ruling. “I think that overall more people have shown support in terms of supporting the queer community. There was the whole Facebook rainbow filter that people were using, which was kind of problematic, but at the same time it was nice to know that there are a lot of people on your side,” Jager said. “I think the way that my life could improve after this is where the community goes in terms of activism now, because marriage equality has been a fight for a long time, and now there are other issues that we can work on.”

I think that overall more people have shown support in terms of supporting the queer community.

T

he historic June 26 Supreme court decision in the Obergefell vs. Hodges case legalizing same sex marriage throughout the country was huge victory for the gay community and its supporters. In light of this ruling it seems appropriate that we now ask if things have improved for gay students and the gay community in general in the subsequent months. When we do we find that despite the victory many challenges remain for gay people in America Raja Bhattar, Director of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Campus Resource Center at UCLA, pointed out the positive effects he thinks the decision will have. “I think eventually it will lead to more acceptance and support in the future. As we have seen with other communities, legal decisions often lead to cultural changes in how folks perceive the community.” Bhattar said in an email. Sierra Jager, a senior at the University of Oregon and Education Coordinator for the LGBTQA3 organization, agreed that the marriage equality ruling was a step forward. “I think its been great for all the couples who have gotten married, and I’m really happy for them. Especially the people who have been together for decades but weren’t able to get married yet,” Jager said. “I also think its been a good way for people to start talking about

Bhattar pointed out that the gay community still faces many problems that the Obergefell ruling didn’t fix.

“Marriage is great, but in 18 states, our community can be fired for being LGBTQQIA. There still is no national protection. Further, we have seen 21 Trans* women killed in this country, just this year. This is an epidemic. Our sisters are being murdered simply for being who they are and the broader LGBTQQIA and heterosexual community are not doing enough to ensure such deaths don’t happen.” Bhattar said in an email. “Over 40% of homeless youth are LGBTQQIA (though we make up 5-12% of the national population), and the statistics get more dire as you look at the intersections of race, class, immigration and healthcare access.” Jager shared Bhattar’s concern for transgender people. “This year we know of 20 trans women alone who were murdered in the United States.” Jager said. “When you look at queer history the two people who really started the queer movement were Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P Johnson who were both trans women of color. They were the ones who basically started the stonewall riots, and I think the community as a whole has forgotten that.” Marriage equality is now the law across America. This was a huge step forward for the gay rights movement. When we talk to those who are most effected by the decision, they make clear that it is a step forward but by no means the end of a movement. cn

FEATURE | bryan Cranston

Bryan Cranston

gives insight on his new film Trumbo BY MARTIN HEMPFLING

*VSSLNL 5L^Z had the opportunity to sit in on a press conference in Los Angeles at The Four Seasons hotel featuring Emmy Award winning actor Bryan Cranston. Cranston as well as his other cast mates discussed their new critically acclaimed film Trumbo that follows the life of screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, who was blacklisted in the 1940’s for his political beliefs. Here are some of Bryan’s answers when discussing his new film.

are off screen you are not focusing on not inhaling, you are focusing on doing the scene, so I catch myself inhaling, even off screen. So, it became an issue for a little bit with getting hoarse and not feeling great, so it was a challenge more of a physical challenge.

*5! When you talk about getting into Trumbo, obviously there is a particular manner in the way he speaks and the way he looks and so forth. Talk a little bit about getting into the voice of Trumbo?

)*! I think embedded in the story there is a cautionary tale, but the film is entertainment and I think through entertainment we will have people taking with them the message that is behind it. I think any time that a government sets out to oppress civil liberties, that the citizens need to be very concerned about that and stand up for their rights and so, that is the cautionary tale. Now, hopefully the younger generation will be able to learn by that and remember that and see its parallels when they pop up. cn

)*! Well that really has a bit of a double entendre with “getting into the voice of Trumbo”. There are plenty of audio recordings and files, but you can kind of get lost in that and if you only focus on that, you could start down a road of impersonation, so I wanted to be very careful not to do that. That being said he was a very flamboyant character with contradiction and irascibility and passion. He was very prolific, wonderful and big character. So, it’s sort of a amalgam of research to read the books about him and hearing from people who knew him, so you are almost like a detective assembling clues. And every time I start a show or character I always envision him outside and I feel like the more research I do outside of the script, the closer I get to bringing him in and at some point you have to.

*5! I think the question I have when watching the film is: Is there a cautionary tale here?

*5! You have to smoke cigarettes in this film and do other things in have trust and faith that at some point he becomes a part of you, not just the sound of him or how he carries his body, but his sensibility and his point of view…”the film for the character Trumbo, what was the biggest challenge? )*! For the cigarettes I stupidly thought that I wouldn’t be smoking real cigarettes, so I can stop myself from ingesting nicotine and tar and all the carcinogens, but then I realized I’m still inhaling smoke. I’m still smoking these herbal cigarettes. Smoke is going into my lungs, and there were many times where we were looking for places and I was like ‘Oh man, maybe I don’t have to smoke in this’, but if you have a cigarette in your hand and you are playing that character, even if you

Resolutions

and Not Distractions!

A

new year calls for new beginnings and for most, that means a list of resolutions - resolutions that include going to the gym, eating healthier, getting good grades and attending every class. If this sounds like your list, be prepared to wait in line for the elliptical, plan out your meals a week in advance, schedule time for studying and set your alarm for those early morning classes. But once the routine kicks in, the gym gets overly crowded, and the assignments start piling up on your desk, you aren’t going to have time for any interruptions, especially from your period. *Cue panic mode* You’ll need to make time to find a tampon in your gym bag or steal one from your roommate’s stash, and after a few hours of cramps, you may forget about your resolution for healthy eating. How about that class that started 20 minutes ago? You were too busy changing your underwear to keep an eye on the time. What if we told you that we have a solution; a solution that would save you time, save you money and take away your period worries, freeing you up to conquer some of your resolutions for 2016?

38

collegenews.com | Winter Break 2015

Diva International Advertorial.indd 38

The solution is The DivaCup! So, what is it? The DivaCup is a reusable menstrual cup that is better for your body. It’s made from 100% healthcare grade silicone, can be worn for up to 12 hours at a time, is super comfy and easy to use. When first trying The DivaCup, there can be a bit of a learning curve. Positioning is key. The DivaCup is inserted horizontally, so that it sits at the base of the vaginal canal and can fully open. For removal, simply pinch the base, turn to release the seal, then gently remove and empty the contents. It’s important to clean The DivaCup with warm water and DivaWash, or a mild, unscented, oil-free soap every 10-12 hours and rinse well before reinserting. Want to know more? The website is super helpful with tips for insertion, sizing and cleaning. For first time users (or for a refresher), be sure to watch the informative videos on The DivaCup’s home page or YouTube channel and refer to the “Now What” blog post! You can buy The DivaCup and DivaWash at most health food stores and drugstores. You can also search for one close to you on The DivaCup’s online Store Finder.

With The DivaCup, period care doesn’t need to be awkward, wasteful or costly. Just think, you can stay on track with your resolutions without any interruptions (well maybe a cookie here and there). Find out more about The DivaCup at divacup.com, or visit them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram! cn

Winter Workout Exercises To Do Indoors BY ALYSSA LEE

Getting a good workout during the colder months becomes less of a priority because we don’t need that beach body anymore, right? Actually, doing a workout throughout the winter can make it easier to remain fit for next summer! These exercises can be done in the warmth of your own home, so you don’t have to go out and face the winter storms.

HEEL SQUATS Targets: glutes 1. Stand up straight with your feet about shoulder width apart and your arms raised above your head. 2. Squat down making sure knees do not pass the tips of your toes. 3. As you squat down, take your right hand and cross over to your left heel. Simultaneously, swing your left arm behind your back. 4. As you come back up, raise both hands back over your head. 5. Squat again with your left hand crossing over to your right heel and your right hand swinging behind your back. Come back up and raise both hands above your head again. 6. A

re you a fan or nah? Pun completely intended! We spoke to hip-hop’s emerging star Ty Dolla $ign (or TY$) about his freshly released debut album named after his brother TC, how it is working with Wiz Khalifa and his Taylor Gang label, as well as his view on the current social climate of our country. He is so down to earth and we see why he has been able to achieve so many major career moves in such a short time. We know he will have longevity, as his passion is evident just by speaking to him.

*VSSLNL 5L^Z! I remember when YG’s ‘Toot

It and Boot It’ was getting a lot of airplay here in New York City. He actually performed live at a club I was at. Do you remember those days? ;@ ! Of course, it’s a possibility I was there also at that club. I worked very hard from the very beginning and it’s that same hustle that has taken

42

me this far and will take me further.

*5! It’s dope to see how far you’ve come in such a short time. I’m sure you feel like it’s about damn time. What do you attribute the majority of your success to? ;@ ! Hard work and perseverance. It’s never going to happen in a day so I just kept at it. I love music it’s what I do it’s who I am.

*5! Can you speak about your career before you

signed to Wiz’s Taylor Gang? ;@ ! Wiz is dope, he took me on and we have always really vibed well together so it’s cool. Working with a label is different than working solely independent because you get that feeling of a team, like support, but I don’t rely on them for my career. That is in my hands.

*5! You’ve work with a bunch of producers. You’re an LA artist signed to an east coast label. Which sound do you prefer? ;@ ! It really doesn’t matter what label you’re on, you as the artist gotta bring your best work to the table and then just let them do their part. It is a blend of their work mixed with your work. *5! We know you worked with Chinx, RIP to him, what was he like to work with? It’s so sad what happened, can you speak about street violence? ;@ ! Violence sucks and it happens everyday. You have to make sure that you stay around the right kinds of people. It really depends on your crowd. There’s not much more I can say on it. As for knowing and having the opportunity to

COVER STORY | ty dolla $ign interview

;@ ! It was a dream come true I always wanted to perform on MTV so I’m happy [that] I got that opportunity. *5! You’ve worked with DJ Mustard a lot, what is it about his creative process that intrigues you? ;@ ! He’s always on it…his consistency honestly. Some producers give you one track and then they don’t have another one available for weeks. Mustard is on the ball and is always ready with something new to present so I appreciate that. *5! What changed for you after appearing on the XXL Freshmen class cover last year?

;@ ! Just more and more shit...in a good way though... it’s always love with me and I don’t really notice haters. My music is positive, so I think I get more positive feedback than anything. There are always the trolls on IG and what not but I don’t even notice most of that stuff.

*5! Tell me about the new album, ‘Free TC’. I know the title is for your brother who is currently incarcerated. ;@ ! Yes my brother is in jail for something that he didn’t do. It’s going to be a great album from start to finish first of all. I’m talking about incarceration and the criminal justice framing of this country. It is so broken it’s ridiculous. I put more conscious music on this album, lyrics with real messages but the whole thing is a great play, super dope.

*5! Do you feel as an artist it’s important discuss

current events such as Black Lives Matter, the upcoming Presidential election, and marijuana legalization? ;@ ! Hell yea all of that stuff is very important. I speak on it and yes these are the topics the media should be covering.

*5! Tell me one honest way fame and fortune has changed you?.

;@ ! Not really besides the fact that I don’t have

work with Chinx, man he was just a great dude. It’s unfortunate. It’s always the good guys we lose early. It was a shock to me when I got the news and I’m just grateful we had a chance to drop music collectively. RIP to him for sure.

I had a great experience. I’ve headlined a few tours here in the States and one in Europe. I have another one coming up; the dates should be out shortly for most of those shows. Touring is a great way to connect so I never take it lightly.

*5! Which artist from the past would you bring

*5! The track “Or Nah” is now a coined phrase in urban society. I myself am guilt of using it probably a little too much. Did you think the track was going to be as popular as it become? ;@ ! Its always hit or miss with these tracks, I never really know what is going to blow up and go viral so that was great to see. It went Platinum, so thank you!

back to collab on a track with? ;@ ! I actually have Jagged Edge and Babyface on my upcoming album. I don’t discriminate, if you got good music and something I feel is different, I will bring it all to the table. That applies to known and unknown artists and/or producers.

*5! In 2013, you embarked on the ‘Under the

Influence 2’ tour with Wiz , ASAP and More. How was that experience? ;@ ! I had a blast; I wish we can do it again.

*5! How was it to performing ‘Drop That Kitty’ with Charli XCX & Tinashe earlier this year at the MTV movie awards?

much time like right now I’m in home depot. I don’t really time for small stuff my schedule has gotten really crazy.

*5! What is your favorite home cooked meal after coming home from a long tour? ;@ ! Chilean Sea Bass with steamed fresh veggies. *5! How about In n Burger or Chick Fil-A? ;@ ! Chick Fil-A! Its amazing chicken sandwiches, how can you not love it.

*5! We know it’s rare but what do you do during your down times?

;@ ! I watch porn and jerk off. *5! What?! I’m going to put that in! ;@ ! You better put that in. cn

FEATURES | legalizing marijuana

Marijuana: America’s newest Cash Crop BY REEL ROBINSON

44

LAWS AND REGULATIONS Now that you understand the potential monetary growth we can benefit from once more states decide that legalizing medical marijuana consumption even on the smallest scale is a priority. The laws need to be fair and open for the people to decide. The power in the world needs to be shifted back into the hands of the people, which starts with having laws that allow safe and secure cultivation for communities and individuals. Every state law is different and unique to their cities but as regulation becomes a hot topic issue the citizens have to pay close attention to the wordage of these legislations. Some states are aiming to take the power away from the citizens and put strict limitations on the cultivation aspect of things. As of today 23 states have passed medical marijuana laws as well as the District of Columbia. The medical benefits of the plant has gradually grown in notoriety and has resulted in real medical advances for severe health conditions like skin cancer, multiple sclerosis, Glaucoma, and many other ailments that plague millions of people throughout the world. The addition of PTSD to the list of qualifying ailments will most likely add thousands of veterans and active military officers to the expanding patient list. This is another reason why it will be the cash

crop of the future. The demand will become overwhelming for a justice system to deny it from the people who need it. As we march towards a future that will open doors to new opportunities inside an industry built to create a new system of wealth in this country. The industry will need engineers to manage innovative ideas in cultivation and storing. The industry will also need people to teach the new comers about the effects and risk involved. We are looking at a future where business majors will focus on growing marijuana companies from the ground up. The wave of the new generation is here. cn

It is one of the most diverse plants on the planet when nurtured it can yield 4x more fiber as a typical forest and 2x more than a pine plantation

NUMBERS NEVER LIE The understanding of medical marijuana over the past two decades has reached the highest level in history. The people who have influence in this world at this particular moment are stoners themselves or employ stoners who have dispelled any misunderstandings known of the herb enthusiast. The revenue stream is projected to surpass all expectations. If you look at the

states who have already legalized medical cannabis like Washington and Colorado the tax revenue has been the strongest indication of its success. According to online database Marijuana Business Daily, Washington taxes at 8.9% and netted $2.5 million in tax revenue in 2014. Colorado who is now going on its 2nd year since passing the first Laws allowing for recreation consumption of marijuana has been benefited with less crime and tax revenue that has helped to jump start the education system in the state. Colorado taxes at 2.9% and were able to accumulate $6 million in sales revenue in 2014, according Marijuana Business Daily. The growth of the industry is an indication on the trust people have in the plant. Studies have shown THC oil is one of the most effective components to limiting the spread of skin cancers.

C

an you imagine a world where the taboo of marijuana is no longer subjected to the short sighted myth of laziness and uncontrollable hunger cravings? Although, these traits are common occurrence among those who partake in the past time it is never a defining factor of that person. Marijuana has become less taboo and much more commercial but the truth about this seemingly over-glamorized sensation is that it really helps to better lives. The medical marijuana industry has the potential to usher in an economic boom for America. The commercial side alone could fund a resurgence in our struggling education system. The decriminalization of petty drug offenders would diminish tax dollars spent to house these people as well as put some of the most inventive minds we have back into the economic work force and not behind bars wasting their minds. The legalization of marijuana would also open the earth to legalized cultivation of its sister plant hemp. Hemp is an interesting plant. It is one of the most diverse plants on the planet when nurtured it can yield 4x more fiber as a typical forest and 2x more than a pine plantation. It can be used for clothing, auto parts, building materials and this all done without any pesticides. It is also a plant that helps yield other plants by enriching the soil around it. It can be grown virtually everywhere with a yield expectancy of 60-90 days. This will become a crop that changes the landscape of the agriculture industry. This could also be the main reason this process of legalization has been long overdue. The Age of Hemp will be the true passing of the guard when it comes to agriculture dominance in this country.

Hot Fashion Guide For Parties and Cold Weather BY ALYSSA LEE

Just because the weather is colder doesn’t mean you have to slack on your style! Don’t let baggy sweats, chapped lips, or dry hair bring you down when you are trying to make a lasting impression at holiday parties. Here are some fashion, makeup, and hair tips for the winter to keep you looking fresh and warm for every party occasion.

Turtlenec ks X

Turtlenecks are in! Not only will these keep your torso warm and cozy, but your neck gets some love too. Bonus: You won’t even have to feel that cold draft as you take off your winter scarf.

S

Fun Hair Color Change your hairstyle by parting it on a different side or dying it a different color. Try a cinnamon shade, dark auburn, or even streaks of pastel colors.

Smoot h Lips

To keep your lips from drying out, use a moisturizing lip scrub and a soothing lip balm afterwards. For a simple DIY lip scrub, combine a tablespoon of white or brown sugar with a dash of honey, olive oil, or coconut oil, and a couple drops of vanilla to make it smell delicious!

Sultry Eyeshadow

Add some shimmery white or peachy eyeshadow on the inner corners of the eyes, right under your brows, and along the bridge and tip of your nose for a snow queen highlight!

Chic Feet

S

To keep your feet looking chic, go for a lace up boot with a small heel (or none at all!). Laced up boots look super cute and stylish in the winter storms.

Winged Eyeliner

S

Experiment with the eyes and perfect that winged eyeliner or smokey eye. Take it one step further by using a blue or green gel liner or cranberry eyeshadows! Make it festive for whatever holiday you celebrate.

Tribal Prints

S

Get rid of any winter blues with bright tribal prints, which will be trendy for the winter. Sport a long, flowy tribal print skirt with warm winter boots. You can wear fuzzy socks and no one will ever know this look can translate well to a casual gathering at night if you need to go from day-wear to evening-wear without changing.

48

Flowing Hair

Before you shower, rub olive oil or coconut oil into the ends of your hair and leave it in for at least 30 minutes. You can leave it in for hours if you want! When you wash it off in the shower, your hair will be silky smooth and able to combat the harsh winter weather.

S

If you’re in a rush and don’t have time to do your hair, try a half up bun. Take the top half of your hair and pull it towards the crown of your head. Then twist this section into a messy bun and you’re ready to go!

Day To start this journey we’re leaving behind the uggs… forever (just give them away to a 12-year-old in need), but keeping the leggings. Preferably a pair of bold print leggings to go under a long solid color sweater, with boots, and a comfort color scarf to tie it all together.

Outfits

for Every Occasion (For the Girl Who Doesn’t Do Winter) BY DANIELLE DABRIO-CARROLL

During these cold months I know it’s tempting to just grab your leggings, hoodie, and uggs and call it a day, night… overnight. Let’s face it, if we could prance around in a snuggie all day we probably would. Just kidding! Maybe… but this is not socially acceptable, so we’ve broken down a basic winter wardrobe for you that covers it all so you can at least not look like a bum all season.

Night A dress is still your ultimate weapon of choice! It’s like the lazy girl’s cheat for looking like she cares about her outfit. Take out that bodycon dress or any other shape complimenting beauty in your closet with a simple pair of heels, do your face, and voila! You’re gorgeous and ready to dance with the girls or impress that Tinder date. *You can also never go wrong with a little red dress. It’s like the little black dress’ wild younger sister or crazy best friend.

School School is going to be a little less pajama comfort style with a pair of jeans, long sleeve top, and your choice of sneakers (I prefer hidden wedges). Cover it all with your best winter jacket and add as many accessories as you can handle!!

Work When at work you want to keep it simple and professional, but still looking good right? This means you can never go wrong with a dress. Shift, full skirt, or an a-line skirt work the best in this kind of setting. Pair it with a color matching cardigan to go around it and you’re good to go.

© 123R F

*Also, if you’re going to cover it with a cardigan this makes it so the dress can be sleeveless or a spaghetti strap and still be appropriate.
