Community Notices WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE MUSEUM? Finding Treasures: Some interesting items have been discovered in the storage area as the Collection Team makes its way through each shelf. This month we have found a novelty cigarette dispenser that would have been made in the 40s or 50s. It is in the form of a mechanical bird that picks up a cigarette in its beak when you push a lever. This belonged to Rex Howell of Tongaporutu. Another item we came across was a silver coloured tray. When we wiped it down we found that it had the words “Compliments of S. Whitehead Mokau” etched into it. Whitehead had a general store in Mokau in the early 20th Century which was taken over by the Whittakers in the 1960s.

We will be displaying these and other interesting items we come across in our Collections Cabinet at the museum. Here you can read about how we are going about documenting and looking after our collection as well as seeing these re-discovered treasures.

Art Gallery: In the first part of July is New Plymouth’s Phil Jones. Phil’s work features several bird images including one large work he has created especially for Mokau. July 20 we welcome Rebecca Beyer into the gallery with her delightful characters going about their business whether that is everyday life or at the start of an adventure.

Ngā Hapū o Poutama - Pānui Tēnā ra koutou katoa, A short newsletter this month.

The 10 hectare restoration programme at Kamate is progressing well. The posts are all in the ground, the wires on the 1350 metres of fencing, and the goats have been shot. It’s been a great effort by everyone involved. The iwi have also purchased 3280 native trees and will start planting them as part of the project in the next couple of weeks. You can see the transformation as you drive past the Pilot Station and the urupa at Kamate.

Thank you to Greg Browne, Dominic Strogen and Andrew Boyes, of GNS Science who came up and flew a drone over Kamate recently, to generate a 3D image showing all trenches, rua, papakainga and other earthworks. They are looking into producing a 3D printout of the area.

We have started midwinter feeding for the bees.

We will be catching up with landowners over the coming month with honey breakdown reports, buckets of honey and putea. It’s taken a while to get tests sorted.

TRAPPED TRAVELLERS AWAKINO DISTRICT PROBLEM ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD

By Telegraph (Own Correspondent) New Plymouth Tuesday Lack of communication, shortage of food, losses of stock and pastures and the isolation of backblocks districts have created a grave position for settlers and travellers alike in the Awakino district. In some areas the country bears a striking resemblance to Hawke’s Bay after the great earthquake.

Literally hundreds of slips have occurred over the roadway north and south of Awakino.

The accommodation at Awakino and Mokau is overflowing and scores of travellers caught by the slips on Saturday do not know when they will reach their destinations. It may be about a week before a single car track can be cleared either north or south.

MAROONED SINCE SATURDAY A transport bus and between 20 and 25 cars are held up at Rapanui Bridge, two or three miles north of Tongaporutu, where more than 60 people, including women and children, have been forced to stay since Saturday. They are being fed by the settlers, but the food problem has now become acute.

Another bus is held up at Mokau. The passengers have been brought back to Awakino owing to lack of accommodation at Mokau, and later slips netween Mokau and Awakino have separated the bus and the passengers. Several cars and their passengers are isolated at Awakino, where there are 35 guests at the house.

The position north of Awakino is worse. A count begun this morning of slips in the Awakino Gorge show that there are 64 quite impassale slips blocking the road and literally hundreds of smaller ones. In many parts of the road, both north and south of Awakino, great subsidences and fissures have developed. It is reported that a little north of the Awakino tunnel the road has disappeared.

#loveMOKAUhall# Queens Birthday Weekend saw Mokau busy with lots of people around. Mokau Market Pop-Up Shop opened up in the Hall with 19 individual Crafters producing their usual great standard of work. It was a very successful weekend for everyone and the feedback from the general public was as usual amazing. Pop-Up comes again Labour Weekend.

If you haven’t been to have a look and like to support locally made, low carbon footprint and no plastic which is not fantastic, go for a wander thru. You will be surprised with what you find.

The Mokau Hall Committee has been granted funding

by WDC to upgrade the wiring of the Supper room and Kitchen. This will be carried out with the revamp of the Kitchen which is going thru the quoting and funding steps.

There’s lots going on in the background to bring our lovely old Hall up to date.

The Mokau Community Gym has its funding applications in and we wait for decisions. Thanks to everyone who have made generous offers of intent. When we are ready we will be taking them up. So thanks again.

MANY IMPASSABLE SLIPS

More than 100 travellers are suspended between Awakino and Mount Messenger with no apparent hope of getting out in the near future, and it is certain that those who have private cars caught between the slips will have to abandon them for at least one week and probably longer, if they are unable to get out any earlier themselves.

South of Awakino there is a huge slip near the Mokau Pilot Station about 300 yards long, in which the whole hillside has moved over the road, and it is estimated that this slip alone will take at least a week to clear. The hill is still moving and when the bus, now at Mokau was alongside it, the hill started moving again, and the driver just backed away in time.

SUBSIDENCE OF BRIDGE The chief obstacles between Awakino and Mokau are at Martin Hill, one being about 50 yards long. The Mohakatino Bridge has subsided substantially in the middle and is unsafe for traffic.
