CREATING CYANOTYPES (BLUEPRINTS) SIMILAR TO A Van Dyke Brown print (see Technique #81, “Simulating a Van Dyke Brown Print”), a cyanotype is an early photographic printing technique introduced by Sir John Hershel in 1842 and made popular shortly thereafter by the first female photographer, Anna Atkins. The process uses a special chemical

emulsion of iron compounds and a UV light source to produce photographic images and photograms with deep cyan blue tones instead of black or brown. Also referred to as blueprints, artists often intentionally show their cyanotypes with the blue emulsion surrounding the negative as part of the final image.
