Vuosi loppuu,

MUISTOT JÄÄVÄT

On aika sanoa omasta puolestani hyvästit. Ainakin näin puheenjohtajan roolissa. Ennen tämän palstan aloittamista otan viimeiset kahvit pannusta toimistovuoroni päätteeksi. Laitan kirkasvalolampun päälle ja menen sohvalle lämpöpeiton alle. Toimistolla vallitsee syvä hiljaisuus. Päivä on jo hämärtymässä pois ja oloni on rauhallinen, jopa seesteinen. Tirautan pari kyyneltä. Tämä paikka on niin arkinen, tuttu, turvallinen ja rakas. Vuosi sitten mielentilani oli eri: innostus, pelko, jännittyneisyys. Minut oli juuri valittu Artiklan puheenjohtajaksi. Näin vuosi myöhemmin voinen todeta, että aika on mennyt todella nopeasti. Vastahan mä opettelin, miten nuija pysyy käsissä. Vastahan mä luonnostelin haihallituksen vuoden ensimmäisen kokouksen esityslistaa. Vastahan mä stressasin mun ensimmäisen palstan deadlineä (sori Freya). Aika on kulunut todella nopeasti myös fuksihärdellistäni, haalareiden saamisesta ja ensimmäisestä varallisuuden hylätystäni. Tässä välissä on ollut reilut kaksi vuotta täynnä unohtumattomia muistoja, monta juna- ja lentomatkaa, ihania kokemuksia sekä upeita ihmisiä. Kävellessäni tämän vuoden syyskokoussaliin ajattelin, että tästä pestistä irti päästäminen olisi helppoa. Kas kun nuijitaan seuraajat pöytään, perehdytetään ja menoksi. Kuunnellessani kuitenkin ehdokkaiden linjapuheita siitä, miten paljon Artikla heille merkitsee ja miten paljon Artikla on heille antanut, tajusin, että tehtävä onkin vaikeampi kuin alkujaan luulin. Artiklasta kun välitän itsekin. Artikla kun on antanut myös minulle. Seison kuitenkin sanojeni takana siinä, että Artiklassa parasta on sen vaihtuvuus. Artistit, jotka jaksavat vuosi toisensa jälkeen tehdä hommia rakkaan yhteisönsä eteen. Aikani Artiklassa ovat mahdollistaneet minua edeltäneet aktiivit. Tämän vuoden aktiivit, itseni mukaan lukien, sytyttivät bolognanpunaisen rakkauden lukuisaan uuteen Artistiin* Rovaniemellä. Muutos mahdollistaa kehityksen ja sitähän toivoo yhteisölle, josta välittää. Tilanteen haikeutta lisää se, että tämän palstan julkaisuhetkellä kotiosoitteeni ei enää ole Rovaniemellä. Lähden Alankomaihin toteuttamaan seuraavan pitkäaikaisen unelmani: vaihto-opiskelun. Muutos jännittää, mutta tällaisissa tilanteissa muistelen aina elokuuta 2020, kun ajelin isäni kanssa muuttopakulla kohti Rovaniemeä. Silloin jännitin paljon elämässäni tapahtuvaa muutosta, josta kehkeytyi yksi tähänastisen elämäni parhaimmista ajanjaksoista. Faijalla oli haikeeta, kun lähetti lapsensa yliopistoon toiselle puolelle Suomea, mutta tiesi sen olevan parasta lapselleen. Vähän kuin minulla nyt, haihallituksen faijalla, on haikeeta päästää rakkaasta ainejärjestöstämme irti. Tämän sanottua tiskaan kahvikuppini, pyyhin kyyneleeni ja lähden vielä siltareittikävelylle ottaakseni kuvan Jätkänkynttilästä. Kohti uusia seikkailuja! Kunnioitan perinteitä ja sanon viimeisessä kappaleessani sen, jonka moni edeltäjäni on seuraajalleensa sanonut: Toivotan paljon onnea, tsemppiä ja menestystä Julialle sekä hänen luotsaamalleen chilihallitukselle ensi vuoteen. Tämä matka on ollut yksi elämäni antoisimmista ja olen varma, että se tulee olemaan sitä myös teille. Nauttikaa kaikista ihanista hetkistä ja oppikaa haastavimmista. Muistutan teitä siitä, että ainejärjestötoiminnan kuuluu olla ennen kaikkea hauskaa!

Nuija lähtee eteenpäin seuraavalle, mutta muistot jäävät. Olen äärettömän kiitollinen siitä, että sain toimia Artiklan hallituksen puheenjohtajana tänä vuonna. Halataan, kun tavataan! Rakkaudella,

Our senior associate Jussi Kukko and associates Liselotte Grönlund and Anniina Nuutero are eager to share their experiences at White & Case with you.

Jussi, how did your career journey at White & Case start?

I joined White & Case right after my graduation from law school in 2014. I knew people who worked at the Firm and who warmly recommended the Firm as a work place. Luckily, there was an open associate position at the time of my graduation and so my ride at the Firm started—a decision that I have not regretted!

How did you Liselotte and Anniina become part of the White & Case team?

Anniina: I joined White & Case in September 2021 as an associate trainee for a four-month traineeship during the final stages of my studies.

Liselotte: I actually started at White & Case as an associate trainee at the same time as Anniina.

Liselotte, how would you describe your trainee experience?

The traineeship gave great insight into what it is like to work as a starting associate in a Firm focused on transactional work. I got to do hands-on work on various projects in all of the practices, which I really enjoyed. The partners and associates were welcoming, supportive and truly made an effort to involve me in all aspects of the work. I am amazed by how much I was able to learn and develop in only four months!

How about you, Anniina? How do you think our traineeship stands out?

As a trainee, in just a short time I got to be part of multiple national and international projects and learned enormously. I worked with lawyers at different levels throughout our office and performed the same tasks as recently graduated associate lawyers.

We have a relatively small Helsinki office, so everyone knows each other well and also trainees become a part of the group fast. At the same time, because of the global nature of the Firm, you get to be involved in interesting and complex crossborder transactions and have support from all over the world.

Which qualities should a great White & Case trainee candidate have?

Anniina: A great White & Case trainee would be truly interested in transactions, ready to work in an international environment and be eager to learn.

Liselotte: Curiosity, good communication skills and a genuine interest in business law.

Jussi, what do you like the most about working at White & Case?

In my view, the White & Case Helsinki office combines the best aspects of a small organization and a large international law Firm. You get to work in a close-knit community where everyone knows each other and works together, but the projects you work on are typically cross-border in nature and for the most prestigious Finnish and international clients. I think this is an unmatched employer offering that quite uniquely combines a sense of togetherness with your colleagues in Helsinki with a feeling of being part of a large international top-tier Firm.

Could you, Jussi, share a few highlights from your career?

In addition to many memorable projects and first-class clients, one of the best things about a large international organization like White & Case is the many social events where you meet your colleagues from other offices. I have so many warm memories, for example, from the annual White & Case Football & Volleyball World Cup, which is organized in different cities in Europe each fall, as well as the outing events with our Stockholm colleagues in both cities. Also, in the academic year 2018 – 2019, I studied at Columbia Law School in New York and completed an LL.M. degree. It was one of the best years of my life so far and a truly unforgettable experience—something I really recommend for anyone.

Is there something else you would like to share with us?

Liselotte: Because of the global nature of the Firm, White & Case has an endless number of learning resources, networking opportunities and interesting cross-border projects. Combined with the collegial culture, I could not imagine a better place to kick-start your career as a student or young professional!

Jussi: It may sound like a cliché, but I would recommend giving a shot to the many possibilities student life and law school has to offer—attend an exchange program abroad, gain experience from different traineeships and see what type of work would interest you after graduation, and perhaps participate in a moot court competition. Most importantly, remember to enjoy student life!
