Stephanie hickling Beckman, director Stephanie is a Producer, a Director, and an actor. She has been attached to theatre in one way or another, since Highschool. Stephanie has acted, directed, or stage with most companies in Asheville over the last 23 years. In her most current Act she is the Managing Artistic Director for Different Strokes!, and has directed 22+ of the theatre’s 38 productions.Stephanie believes that theatre has the power to change hearts and minds). All lives don’t matter if black lives don’t matter. Black lives matter.

My Daddy Taught Me That is a program designed to support the development, uplift, and education of youth and young males. The organization's focus is to teach young men how to transition from the young teen adolescent time in their lives into responsible young men; focusing on good decision making, accepting responsibility, and being accountable for their actions.

Meet the Cast

Shana Tucker - A Long Island, NY native, Shana studied cello at Howard University in Washington, DC, where she took her first dive into improvisational performance and honed her singer-songwriting skills. She later received her degree in Violoncello Performance from CUNY-Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music, where she studied with master cellist Marion Feldman. Shortly after the release of her debut CD, SHiNE in 2011, Cirque du Soleil recruiters heard an NPR interview with Shana about her ChamberSoul songwriting and performance style, they invited her to be cellist/vocalist for their show, KĂ€ in Las Vegas, where she performed for five years before returning to North Carolina. Shana was recently named the first-ever Artist in Residence at the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts in Asheville, NC for their 2019-2020 concert season. In Spring 2018, Shana was Resident Teaching Artist at Springhouse Community School in Floyd, VA, where she co-presented Courageous Conversations, a semester-long course about racism, intersectionality and how to be an authentic, effective ally with Jenny Finn, Head of School.http://www.shanatucker.com


meet the cast ZaKiya Bell-Rogers was raised in Mississippi and North Carolina, ZaKiya prides herself on being a Southern Belle. She is married and has 4 beautiful children. She is a natural born advocate and she loves to fight for what is right. Zakiya is the resident facilitator Her greatest joys are being a mom, speaking, writing and making people laugh and think. ZaKiya lives by the rule, “if it doesn’t kill you; it makes a great page in a book!” Kaity Taylor is an Aspiring writer hailing from the suburbs of Philadelphia. Writing has always been a passion and creative outlet, which she intends to share with a broader audience in the future. She draws most of her inspiration from personal experiences of both struggle and success. After spending most of 2019 in Georgia pursuing an equestrian career, Kaity relocated to Asheville in late December where she has reconnected with her love of living, learning, and sharing through the beauty of words. Janet Oliver has been performing in the Asheville area for over 30 years. She has performed with Different Strokes!! in Best of Enemies, and Eleemosynary. Favorite roles have included: A Raisin In the Sun – Ruth; Miss Evers’ Boys Eunice Evers; Into the Woods – the Witch, Chicago – Mama Morton, and Fences – Rose. Janet will be playing Violet next year in DSPACs production of August: Osage County

Kevin Evans was born in 1982 in Maricopa County, AZ. He is the fourth and last child born to Sharon Brownridge Evans and Arthur Evans of Columbus, MS (Birthplace of Tennessee Williams). His father joined the military at 18 which gave Kevin a slightly different experience to accompany a somewhat naturally different spirit and perspective. Kevin began writing creatively in the 3rd grade, mostly short detective and horror stories. He began writing poetry as a teenager at which time he was mentored by Ms. Glenis Redmond via an after school program. He has locally been a part of the Poetry Cabaret, as well as the Asheville Slam team.


Meet the Cast Eugene Jones has been very active in the theater community since moving to Asheville. You may have just seen him all over, from Magnetic and Montford to The ACT stage. Eugene also plays a big part in Sound-designing for the community. As a graduate with a BA in Theatre Arts from Mars Hill University, Eugene says he’s just happy to be working in the career field that he is passionate about. This is Eugene's first time with Different Strokes! and he's excited to be a part of the team, and to do such important and thought provoking work for the community. Eugene would also like to thank everyone who supports the arts, Different Strokes!, his friends and partner, and everyone who continues to support and uplift the Black community.” Zay Hickling Beckman has been acting, writing and directing plays for nearly all 9 years of his life. Favorite roles outside his homegrown plays include Tiny Tim at Asheville High School for multiple years, and Tim’s brother Peter in last year’s production of a Christmas Carol. Zay’s greatest desire is to be a Doctor, a Rescue Diver, an Olympic gymnast, and an actor all at the same time! He is grateful for the support and encouragement he has received from many but especially his moms. Enjoy the show and support local theater! Shanita Jackson is a self-proclaimed weirdo who has studied the healing nature of words since listening to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in her mother’s womb. Shanita has competed and performed their poetry and storytelling on local, regional, and national stages since 2012. They’ve keynoted local storytelling events in Western North Carolina and performed at TEDxGreenville’s HeadVROOM event alongside the late Tavis Brunson. Shanita has been published in the Anthology of Appalachian Writers, Charles Frazier Volume IX (April 2017), KRCC Voices (Issue 2, 2018), the Fall/Winter 2018-19 issue of The Griot: the Journal of African American Studies, and Rabbit Catastrophe Review #015 (2019). Shanita graduated from Berea College with a Bachelor’s Degree in African and African American Studies. She is currently a first year graduate student pursuing her MFA in Creative Writing (Poetry). They plan to subsequently earn their PhD in African American Studies. For every step they’ve taken, they’d like to thank God, their ancestors, their Queen-Mother, their supportive friends and family, and their mentors.
