Mooiste orgideë by skou op Mookgophong

Professional hunters visit Vaalwater as part of road show Marlene Vermaak A group from the Professional Hunters’ Association of South Africa (PHASA) recently visited Vaalwater as part of a road show. Adri Kitshoff, CEO of PHASA, came to Vaalwater on Saturday, 29 March, to discuss a few issues related to hunting. According to Kitshoff, PHASA decided to do a bit of a road show this year because many of their members never seem to have the time to either attend the annual general meeting or the gala evening. They want to find out at ground level whether professional hunters and outfitters are struggling with anything, as well as to clarify a few issues, like for example canned lion hunting. The meeting in Vaalwater took place at Sports on Main restaurant, and was well attended by members as well as non-members. According to a spokesperson, PHASA’s main aim is to defend and promote the hunting industry in South Africa, as well as to deal with any related issue on government level. They help members with permits, rifle licenses and try to promote South Africa as the ideal hunting destination in Africa. They also support sustainable and responsible hunting. PHASA has applied for Professional Body Status, which means that they will be the only professional hunting association officially recognised by the government. Kitshoff made it very clear that PHASA strongly opposes any form of “canned” hunting and that they will discipline any of PHASA’s members who participate in such

activities. “PHASA will also continue to work with the government and law enforcement agencies to eradicate this practice.” The current position according to the governmental regulations is that a lion must be released seven days before a hunt, on a farm that is at least 1000 hectares big. In that time period there may be no human interaction, and the lion must take care of itself. “Hunters are first and foremost conservationists. A professional hunter’s license is the highest guide and ranger qualification one can get in Southern Africa,” Kitshoff said. “Trophy hunting is legal in South Africa and the activity is endorsed and fully supported by the Department of Environmental Affairs, and is a vital component of the country’s overall wildlife conservation strategy. The Department also said that they realise hunting brings millions of rand of gross domestic product into South Africa.” During the meeting there was also a brief discussion about rhino hunting. According to PHASA rhinos (both white and black) are not yet on the endangered list and may thus still be hunted and exported to any country in the world. “If at some stage the South African government, in conjunction with other relevant agencies, changes the rhino’s status, this would immediately be stopped.”
