Quest

Welcome to the warehouse

Pat is a logistics student from Canada. She loves cycling, hiking and travelling. After she has graduated, she dreams of working for an international company and travelling all over the world. This semester, she is an apprentice in a warehouse that ships clothing. She will start her apprenticeship in a few days and is meeting her supervisor Mrs Lewis today, who will tell her more about the warehouse and the company she will be working for.

1 Read the dialogue between Pat and Mrs Lewis and answer the questions orally.

Mrs Lewis Welcome to Max Clothing, Pat! Are you excited for your first day?

Pat Yes, I am. I’m so curious to see the warehouse.

Mrs Lewis Let me show you around. This is our distribution centre for the south of England and Wales. We have another one in Manchester, which distributes to the north of England and Scotland.

Pat Wow, it’s really big! How many items are stored here?

Mrs Lewis We have a capacity of almost 2 million items here.

Pat That’s amazing! What happens when the clothes arrive?

Mrs Lewis First, the goods need to be unloaded from the truck. The pallets with clothes are brought in on pallet jacks or forklift trucks. Careful, there’s one coming there!

Pat Where do the clothes go then?

Mrs Lewis They are brought inside the warehouse where they will be stored until delivery. Items like dresses and coats are put on clothing racks. Smaller items are kept in storage boxes. The security tags on the clothes are scanned to keep track of the inventory. This makes it easier to pick the right items when an order is received. When the orders are packed, they are loaded onto a truck for delivery.

Pat And what will I do?

Mrs Lewis You will help with the online orders. Customers can order clothes directly from the warehouse. You will help pack the items and keep track of the inventory.

Pat Cool! Thank you for showing me around.

a What kind of goods are stored in this warehouse?

b Why does Max Clothing need two warehouses?

c Why does Pat have to be careful?

d What will Pat’s job be?

e Why do they have to scan the security code?

f What do they need storage boxes for?

Where can I find …?

It’s Pat’s first day at the warehouse. Her first task is to pack an order that was placed on the company’s website this morning. There are so many boxes and racks of clothes at the warehouse. To make sure she finds everything she needs, she asks a colleague for help.

1 Read the dialogue between Pat and Kevin and answer the questions.

Pat Hi Kevin, could you help me with this order? There are so many boxes here and I have no idea where to find the right items.

Kevin Yeah, I know. This lot just got delivered early this morning. Most of the boxes on these pallets haven’t been opened yet. I will sort through them today, take everything out and put everything in the right storages boxes. But I can help you find the clothes you need. What did they order?

Pat They ordered two of these T-shirts in red and in blue, both in a size small.

Kevin What’s the article number? It’s on the product page under the photo.

Pat It’s 1201338002 and 1201338005.

Kevin Check the boxes over there against the shelf. There’s a different box per size and per colour. I think the one on your left-hand side will be right.

Pat No, that’s not right, these are in a size large. Should I check the box beside it?

Kevin Oh, I’m sorry, I meant on your right-hand side. The blue shirts should be in the box behind it.

Pat Found it! They also ordered these jeans in a size medium.

Kevin The jeans are in aisle 7B. They are already in storage boxes. Just check the article number on the box. Check the boxes above and below for different sizes. When you pack the order, make sure you put these sheets between the clothes and put the order confirmation on top of the clothes.

Pat Got it, thanks Kevin!

City cycling

Back home in Canada, Pat often goes for long bike rides in the woods. She would love to have a bike here in Canterbury as well to cycle to school and to the warehouse. She is not used to cycling in the city and therefore looks up some tips on what she needs to be aware of and what she should buy.

1 Watch the video and answer the questions orally.

a Why is it useful to plan your route beforehand?

b Why are lights and a bell extra important when riding in the city?

c Why can reflective clothing on arms and legs really increase how easily you are spotted?

d If you don’t want to wear reflective clothing, where else can you put reflectors for more visibility?

e What hazards will you most likely come across when riding in a big city?

f Most bike paths are shared usage. What does this mean?

g In which two ways does your bike luggage increase your presence on the road?

When will my order be delivered?

In most territories of Canada, it is mandatory to wear a bicycle helmet at all times. Because this is not the case in Britain, Pat did not bother buying one. When she tells Sarah, Sarah tells her about an article she recently read about the importance of bike helmets.

1 Listen to the conversation between Sarah and Pat and complete the stats on the image below.

NEED A GOOD REASON TO WEAR A BIKE HELMET?

Pat decides to buy a helmet after all. She finds an online bike store that is based in Canterbury and looks on their website in search of a suitable helmet.

2 Go to the website of Evans Cycles and search for a helmet that meets Pat’s criteria.

• Pat is looking for a helmet for everyday use in the city.

• She is a women’s size M.

• She wants a helmet in a bright colour for extra visibility. She only has a budget of £50 for a helmet.

• The helmet should be delivered in less than two days.

3 Which helmet from Evans Cycles would you recommend to Pat? Why? Explain.

I would recommend …, because …

4 Do you think bike helmets should be mandatory everywhere? Why? Explain.

Overall this seems like a great helmet which is strong and makes me feel safe. However, whilst the strap under the chin is adjustable, the straps that fit around the ears are not. I bought this helmet in the smallest size (as I have a small head and this helmet fits my head circumference well) but the straps around the ears are at least an inch too long and I’ve had to stitch the straps to the correct length as I cannot adjust them.
