Officers and Trustees

Welcome Campers!

T

AKE a deep breath… you’re on camping time now. Camping is laughing with friends, staying cozy by the fire, and watching the stars twinkle at night as you lay beneath them. It’s roasting hot dogs, making s’mores and popcorn over the open flames. Camping is connecting with the people you love while you connect with nature. In our technology-dependent society, camping is a welcome retreat from screen time. New Jersey offers camping high up in the mountains or down at sea level right by the ocean. You choose the terrain and the style you’d like to camp in. Love going rustic? Pitch your tent up in the woods, settle in and spot the constellations. Is glamping more your speed? We have many opportunities to camp in style. No matter which way you choose, the feeling you get from being outdoors is the same. Camping offers a way to feel free. Camping in New Jersey means being close to beaches, boardwalks, amusements, world-class golfing, superfun mini golfing, mountain hiking, forests, the Appalachian Trail, the Delaware Water Gap, and so much more. Please use this book as your guide to camping in the Garden State. You’ll find rules and regulations, info on nearly all the campgrounds in the entire state, and directions on how to get to them. You’ll also find stories on taking a winery tour, golfing, National Outdoors Month, and more. Go adventure, go family, go laughter, go camping in New Jersey. Happy Trails! Fishing & Crabbing Regulations Licenses

Anyone 16 and older must have a valid license (see Exemptions) to fish the fresh waters of New Jersey with handline, rod and line, or longbow and arrow. This includes privately-owned lakes and other waters. New Jersey does not require a general saltwater fishing license for recreational surf casting, deep sea or bay fishing. However, New Jersey saltwater anglers must register with the New Jersey Saltwater Recreational Registry Program. A clamming license is now called a shellfish license and is required for harvesting of all species of benthic mollusks (with the exception of conchs) including, but not limited to, hard and soft clams, surf clams, oysters, bay scallops and mussels. Licenses are available at shellfish license agent and online.

Exemptions

Anglers Under 16 - No fishing license is required of persons under 16 years old. NJ Residents Age 70 and Over - A driver’s license or other acceptable proof of age containing date of birth and physical description will function as the actual fishing license for New Jersey residents 70 and over. No application fee is required, no registration with the Division of Fish and Wildlife is required and no license will be issued. Trout stamps are not required.

designed by FreePik

Crabbing

Single hand lines and collapsible traps do not require a license. Crabs taken with a recreational license may not be sold or used for barter. The maximum harvest and/or possession limit of crabs is one bushel a day. All organisms other than crabs and conchs shall be immediately released. All female crabs having eggs or spawn attached shall be immediately released. Crab pots and trot lines may be tended only from 4am - 9pm prevailing time, in Delaware Bay and 24 hours a day in all other waters. All crab pots must be checked and emptied of all crabs and other organisms at least once every 72 hours. Minimum size for harvesting: peeler or shedder crabs - 3 inches; soft crabs - 3.5 inches and hard crabs - 4.5 inches. All measurements are from point to point. Tom and Claire Brodesser

TOM BRODESSER Beachcomber Camping Resort

T

HERE’S something about Beachcomber Camping Resort’s Tom Brodesser that instantly puts you at ease. Perhaps it’s his genuine smile or that he exudes business acumen and expertise – there are no false pretenses here. His expertise and sincerity has likely played a big role in Beachcomber celebrating its 40th anniversary last year. Beachcomber’s continued success is also due in part to the diligent care Tom and his late wife Claire have put into the business. Tom was quick to give his wife of 42 years the credit she deserves for her role in the growth and stability of the campground. “You have to give Claire a lot of credit. She held everything together,” said Tom. Claire was dedicated to the campground and worked behind the counter at the store until about three years ago. “Claire loved the customers and the staff,” said Tammy Gomez, one of Tom’s three daughters, who manages the campground with her husband Ken. “And the campers loved Claire.” Family not only plays a big role today at Beachcomber (Tammy’s children Mark and Mary work there every year) but it was the reason the campground began in the first place. Tom was in the heavy construction

business when he decided to develop three campgrounds – one for each of his daughters. There were some setbacks and Beachcomber was the only one developed, though Tom’s middle daughter Maggy owns nearby Holly Shores Camping Resort with her husband Dave Robinson. Beachcomber – “an upscale operation” according to Tom – is a large campground with over 700 sites and its own lake. When they are full, there are about 3,500 people enjoying the grounds. The campground is so expansive, they are able to host 5k runs and even a color run right on site. Tom believes strongly in marketing his campground, and keeping everyone happy, beginning with children. “We like to keep the kids happy, and keep the parents happy,” said Tammy. “Every weekend is a theme. We have a tiny tot’s playground. We take care of the little ones… right up to the teenagers.” “It’s family oriented. You have to take care of the kids – the parents get a break as a result. We have three social directors and a marketing person who really looks after the activities and makes sure the participation is good,” said Tom. This kind of attention to detail is par for the course at Beachcomber and has been since its inception. When Tom and Claire first decided to develop Beachcomber, they took their research seriously. “I was never a camper, said Tom. “When I started construction on Beachcomber, my wife and I rented a motor home and toured about 27 campgrounds to decide the layout and how we would do this one. From the result of that tour, we developed it the way we have it.” Another thing the Brodessers take seriously is giving back to their community. Tom, a three-time cancer survivor, together with Claire, donated one million dollars to Cape Regional Hospital for a cancer center, so people in the community do not have to travel far to get the care they need. The Thomas and Claire Brodesser, Jr. Cancer Center offers area patients state-of-the-art care. “We continue to give anywhere from $25,000 to 50,000 each year,” said Tom. “The area’s been good to us. It’s worked out very well.” - by Stefanie Godfrey.

The southern shore Live, Breathe, Feel the Salt Air The saying “Life’s a Beach,” definitely applies here in the Southern Shore Region. There are miles and miles of soft sand stretches

just waiting for you to place your beach chair and relax upon. Perhaps it’s the Atlantic Ocean you’d like to listen to as you take in the sun’s rays, or maybe you prefer the Delaware Bay... where you can boat, kayak, waterski, stand up paddleboard, and sail. The Southern Shore region is filled with excitement... festivals all year long, amusements, water parks, and more. Camp here and be one with nature, be a part of the action, or just be by yourself on the beach. Life’s a beach, after all.

Try this recipe!

Campfire Cookout In charge of feeding your camping crew? Try making this creamy spinach dip over your open campfire for a perfect snack! Creamy Spinach Dip Ingredients 1 cup sour cream 1 pkg cream cheese {room temperature} 3/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese 3/4 cup chopped, frozen spinach {drained} Optional: vegetable soup mix, bacon, garlic, mozzarella cheese, green onions, artichoke hearts, etc. Instructions Mix all of the ingredients together in a container that can easily be packed to take camping. You can do this prep work before you travel so that most of the mess is left and cleaned up at home. The flavors especially blend well together when combined and allowed to rest in the refrigerator for four to six hours. Create a tin foil packet by layering two pieces of aluminum foil and placing the dip mixture in the center. A few layers of foil will help to protect the dip from burning and the packet from tearing open. Roll up the ends of the foil and bake in the campfire (near the hot coals but not in the fire) for 20-25 minutes or until warm and bubbly. Carefully unwrap the packet and serve. This can be kept close to the fire and reheated to stay warm and melty. There are many ways to alter this recipe to suit your family. You can try bacon bits, or artichoke hearts would be delicious, too. No matter how you customize it, treat your friends and family to this delicious Campfire Spinach Dip and you are sure to WOW them! - Recipe from www.twindragonflydesigns.com

Take a tour of a local winery New Jersey is filled with gorgeous wineries ready for you to come for a tasting and a tour of the grounds

Y

Include a visit to our many award winning wineries and tasting rooms on your next trip to the Garden State.

ou’re sitting around the campfire, enjoying your friends and family and after a huge laugh from the crowd, you bring your beverage up to your lips for another delicious sip. What are you drinking? For many of us, the answer is “wine!” This is nothing new - humans have been imbibing the delicious grape drink for centuries. That’s right, the first wine production evidence comes from 6000 BC(!) From its first pour and splash into the glass, to the twirl and eventual sip, drinking wine can be a serious (and fun) hobby… and these days, it’s not just California, Italy or France having all the fun. New Jersey has more than 45 wineries spread throughout the state – more than enough for you to tour, taste, and enjoy no matter where you pitch your tent. In fact, we are the seventh largest wine-producing state in America. Wineries are growing many different varieties of grapes - Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sangiovese, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay to name a few. Touring the Garden State’s wineries has never been easier thanks to the new Wine Trails Passport app from the Garden State Wine Growers Association. There are maps, directions, upcoming event alerts, and more. If you visit all the participating wineries and get a stamp from each, you can submit your passport for an entry in the Grand Prize drawing. Last year’s winner won a trip to Spain’s wine country. For more information visit, www.newjerseywines. com. -Stefanie Godfrey

Tips for camping with pets Not a camping trip without your furkids? We know the feeling! Enjoy these tips from Lovetheoutdoors.com for camping with your pooch. •Consider a pre-traveling vet visit. Get current on all shots and vaccinations and obtain a Rabies tag for your dog’s collar. Consider a possible Lyme disease vaccine. Obtain a current copy of their records and vet’s phone number. •Get a proper dog license and ID tags for your dog – their name, your name and address and phone number. Temporary tags may be a good idea – name and phone number of where you are staying. Microchips, tattoos and pet registries are also available. •Bring medications and copy of prescriptions. •Consider use of a crate for travel and short term restraint. •Don’t forget to pack plenty of water from home for your dog. Bring their regular food bowls, food and treats. To avoid problems, keep them on their regular schedule. •Bring their chew toys and dog brush. •Always bring their collar and leash. Extras may be a good ideas. •For unexpected situations, pack first aid items for your dog and a towel. Check with your campground for a local vet in case of an emergency.

•Check with your campground to see where dogs are permitted in the region. Pets are prohibited at many state and national parks. •Try to get a site with some shade for your dog. •Many private campgrounds allow dogs but respect the other campers around you. Make sure you have complete control over your dog at all times. Keep them on their leash. Do not allow your dog to bark. Frequent and continued barking disturbs the wildlife and other campers. •Closely supervise your dog around children, other visitors and other dogs. •Never leave your dog outside unattended. •Always pick up after your dog. Make use of designated dog walking areas. Use ziplock bags to pick up after them and properly dispose of it in appropriate trash containers. •Give your dog time to adjust to their new surroundings. Give them time to rest. •Watch that your dog doesn’t get tangled around tent poles or stakes, tables, trees, rocks etc. •Remove any leftover food after your dog eats. This food could attract unwanted insects or wildlife. •Consider your dog’s sleeping arrangements. •Be aware that your dog may have increased exposure to ticks and fleas. Have the proper tick/flea collars, repellents or use flea and tick applications. Other diseases can also be obtained from wild animals and insects.

SOUTHERN SHORE

Dennis Township History and Nature Just Off Shore

D

by Ray Rebmann

ENNIS Township is an in-between place travelers pass while journeying to vacation resorts along the Jersey Shore. But there is so much more to this place, where Indians camped and pirates buried treasure; where pioneer families settled long before the American Revolution and generations of their descendants still call home. Dennis Township is actually eight communities, each unique in its own right, consolidated in 1827 for administrative purposes. Its history began around 1630, when a man named John Dennis “signed” a contract with a Lenni-Lenape “chief” identified as Panktoe, for the purchase of lands on both sides of a creek that to this day bears the Dennis name. The area was settled by men named Ludlam and Townsend and Corson and Leaming, names that have persisted among local families and can be read on plaques identifying historically significant buildings still inhabited throughout the township. The landscape seen from passing cars starts with the trees of Belleplain State Forest, located inside Dennis Township. The idea for a state forest in

this part of southern New Jersey started in 1928 with land purchases from private owners in Eldora, North Dennis, and particularly, Belleplain. Over 5600 acres were acquired. With the arrival of Civilian Conservation Corps labor crews in 1933, major work began to create a recreational area in the heart of this wilderness. Today, whether you’re swimming in Lake Nummy or passing through on a hike or a bike over the 40 miles of trails meandering throughout the region, the efforts of those workers are everywhere to be appreciated. Interspersed among the trees are bogs, marshes, ponds, and lakes, a proliferation of evidence that Dennis Township is a watery place. The lakes, by the way, are man-made, created by settlers, erecting mills to manufacture an assortment of wood products from those forests surrounding. The westernmost part of the township, Eldora, grew during the 19th century, when industry flourished, whose products derived from agriculture and locally abundant natural resources. Those factories are gone now. Today, local place names, like Pickle Pond and Paper Mill Road serve as reminders of more prosperous times. continued on page 30

continued from page 28 The next area on a traveler’s route is North (or Northwest) Dennis. Best known for Jake’s Landing, a remote place where bootleggers once conducted a flourishing business during Prohibition. Henry Ludlam’s House, located on the pond of the same name is named in honor of the Revolutionary War officer, whose family first settled the area. Farther along is the Ludlam School, started in 1801. Ludlam deeded land “to be used forever” as a school. The old school served for 157 years and has stories to tell. Another landmark in North Dennis is “Five Chimneys,” home of William S. Townsend. Now home to a professional artist, the house enjoys historical connections to such 19th century figures as Henry Clay and… yes, Edgar Allan Poe. The driver screeches to a stop at a red light. If he turns off the highway he’ll go back in time to the early 1800’s. Once one of the busiest places in southern New Jersey, today’s Dennisville is a historically significant village of more than 50 structures listed on both the state and national registers of historic places. 19th century Dennisville became a village of sea captains and ship builders. Families accrued fortunes. Names like Leaming and Diverty and Gandy and Wentzell took advantage of an easily accessed supply of oak, hickory, and cedar and safe harborage along the creek. Forty-two ship captains

have called Dennisville home. Today’s Dennisville is a living museum. Following World War II, a new generation of homeowners embarked upon a campaign to restore many of those buildings. In 1985, the village was listed on the New Jersey Historical Register, and in 1987, the National Register. In 1990, local home owners formed an association dedicated to preserving Dennisville as the special place it has always been. The Old School House Museum, housing collections of photographs and artifacts hundreds of years old, is located in the center of Dennisville. Leaving Dennisville, the shore bound traveler crosses a small bridge over a stream winding bay-ward through vast meadows to Dennis Creek, once a major shipbuilding cen-

ter in colonial America. Dennis Creek was centrally located and a stage coach stop was located there. Ships plying the nearby Delaware Bay regularly sailed up the creek bringing provisions and goods from other parts before carrying away local farm and wood products. Traffic stops at another red light.

This is South Dennis, home to some of the state’s oldest cedar trees on record and the Falkinburg House, one of the only brick buildings in southern New Jersey. A left turn presents a view of another still wild area, Beaver Swamp. The swamp boasts few beavers now but wildlife still abounds. Bald eagles nest there. Industries flourished including lumbering, shinglemaking and shipbuilding all of which depended on the abundant convenient cedar and hardwood forests which were cut down to make masts, fence posts, shingles. In 1850 over 600,000 shingles were sold at $13-15 per thousand. In the early 1800s, 25,000 shingles were shipped to Philadelphia to reroof Independence Hall. The traveler then reaches Magnolia Lake and the original home of John Townsend, built in 1690, and the oldest house in Dennis Township. For more information, check out the Dennis Township website at www. dennistwpmuseum.org.

gateway One of America’s Top Cultural Hotspots Hoboken

Where else in America can you camp close to one of the biggest cities in the world? We’re pretty sure only New Jersey’s Gateway Region holds that distinction. Explore nature trails one day and climb the Empire State Building the next... eat homemade s’mores over your campfire or enjoy world class cuisine in the Big Apple. This is the Gateway region. Foodies don’t even have to cross the Hudson to indulge - take a food tour in Jersey City or Hoboken. Want to work off those calories? Kayak, bike or simply stroll around Liberty State Park as you stand in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty. The Gateway region is the perfect mix of culture, shopping, dining, and nature. We’re melting over National S’mores Day Since the s’more was invented in the 1920s it’s taken over our hearts (and stomachs!). Celebrate this beloved treat on Wednesday, August 10 with these recipes.

Watching the marshmallow crackle, bubble and get golden brown (or perhaps black) is one of camping’s best traditions and is loved by millions around the globe. Once you slide the marshmallow off its stick, and onto the graham and chocolate it’s heaven in one ooey gooey bite. Try these variations on the s’more in honor of National S’mores Day!

Chocolate Fondue S’mores

Bacon S’mores

Campfire Cones

by Chris Rochelle at Chowhound

by CHOW Editors at Chowhound

from Jennifer Sullivan at Just A Pinch

Ingredients 1/3 cup milk 3 (1-1/2-ounce) chocolate bars, broken into small pieces 8 marshmallows 4 graham crackers, split into halves Instructions Stepping up the s’more with a rich, velvety chocolate fondue is easier than you might think. All you need is a bit of milk, some chocolate bars, and a camping pot. It’s a decadent reward for having hiked all day. Add the milk to a small camp cooking pot. Bring it to a simmer over the campfire coals away from the active flames, about 5 minutes. (Stir the milk while it heats to make sure it doesn’t scorch.) Remove from the heat and add the pieces of chocolate, stirring until they’re melted and the sauce is smooth; keep warm. Toast the marshmallows, dip them in the chocolate fondue until coated, and transfer to the graham cracker halves.

Ingredients Marshmallows Chocolate Bar Graham Crackers Strips of Bacon Instructions Add a strip of bacon to your s’more to kick it up a notch and make your fellow campers jealous. Other variations include using dark chocolate instead of milk, sprinkling toasted coconut, sea salt … the possibilities are endless for these campfire treats. 1. Roast the marshmallow. 2. Place it on half of the graham cracker, along with the chocolate. Top with the bacon and the other graham cracker half. 3. Squeeze together and devour.

Ingredients Peanut butter Mini marshmallows bananas mini chocolate chips waffle cones Instructions 1. Build a campfire and let the flames die down. There should be a coating of white ash on the coals. 2. Spread the peanut butter around the inside of the cone. 3. Fill with sliced banana, marshmallows and choc chips. 4. Wrap the whole cone in foil and pop over hot coals (or bbq grill) for 5-10mins, turning occasionally 5. Unwrap foil and make sure everything is melted and gooey and eat it up!
