St. Paul’s United Methodist Church will be having a Spring Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13. They will have baked goods, white elephant rummage sale, silent auction items, quilt givea-way, handmade crafts, plants and much more. There is a fish fry starting at 11 a.m. Other vendors from the area will be there as well. Come out and enjoy the fun.

City groups getting busy Events being planned for all RICHARD NELSON

Things are happening in Diboll.

Last month, about 300 children enjoyed an Easter egg hunt in Old Orchard Park, and then about 75 people enjoyed a sunrise Easter service in the park.

Next Saturday, April 20, volunteers will help those in need with repairs to their property in a Clean Sweep.

Four residents requested assistance and more properties may be added from recom-

mendations by the city’s code-enforcement officer.

Four teams have signed up to help. They are Diboll Alumni, First Baptist Church, and the Diboll Business Association. More volunteers are needed. Individuals and teams planning to help should contact Trey Wilkerson at 936-3667215 prior to April 20. Yard equipment is also needed.

All volunteers should report to the Diboll Housing Authority by 8 a.m. April 20. Assignments will be made. Workers will meet

back at the Housing Authority at noon. Further assignments will be made at that time if additional properties are obtained.

Last week Diboll participated in the Texas TrashOff, and many volunteers spent a Saturday morning cleaning up their city. More than 30 full bags of trash were filled.

Friday, April 12, is the last day to schedule pick-up for the city’s annual CleanUp Week. Some items residents may want to get rid of but don’t have the ability are

Time to volunteer for a ‘Clean Sweep’ of Diboll

Spring is officially here and it’s time to clean. Lots of folks were involved last Saturday cleaning along Diboll’s streets and highways.

Saturday, April 20, the Diboll Civic Club is sponsoring Operation Clean Sweep and needs volunteers willing to help make repairs and clean the yards of four homes in Diboll. Volunteers will meet at the Diboll Housing Authority at 8 a.m. for breakfast before going to work on the houses. To volunteer, call Trey Wilkerson, 936-627-3418 or 936-366-7215.

DHS Alumni are putting together a team to volunteer and work during Operation Clean Sweep. If you want to be a part of this team, contact Burlon Wilkerson, 936-829-4817, or Fran McClain, 936-829-2779. Brother Kenny Hibbs is gathering volunteers for a team from Diboll First Baptist. rection Bay Baptist Church for 26 years where Billie and Leonard have previously served as missionaries. Before retirement David Book taught school in Cabot, Vt., (known for Cabot cheese). He served as principal, teacher, fillin bus driver and other duties in a school with 250 total students, PK-12. Since retirement, they both volunteer; David is a tour guide at the Vermont State House (capitol) and Mary Ann at the Vermont History Museum. On Sundays you can find them at Resurrection Bay Baptist Church where David teaches adult Bible studies and Mary Ann is the pianist. *** Jan Trujillo, Joyce Watson and Judy Harrell were overnight guests of Betty Hendrick last Friday. Jan and Betty have been longtime friends who were teachers in San Antonio and attended the same church for many years. Matthew Watson, grandson of Joyce, sings with the fabulous Baylor University Men’s Choir.

This group of about 90 talented singers and instrumentalists stopped at Lufkin’s First Baptist Church as part of their concert tour. The music and professionalism of those young men really impressed the good sized crowd who attended.

According to Betty Hendrick, “The three ladies who visited her are sisters and during the overnight stay and until they left on Saturday morning, not too much air space was left because of all the conversations. It is always good to be with friends who just sort of pick up where they left off! The sisters had not been to East Texas in a long time and the two living in Corpus Christi were awed by the colors of blooming plants and green forests. The South Texas area has had very little rain for the last few months, so they were impressed with the landscapes in our area.” *** Ruth Mullins and daughter, Diane Pennington, recently enjoyed shopping at the nice gift shop/nursery in Alto while on their way to

Wells ISD to check on Josh Mullins, who is teaching PE and coaching baseball. Another day, Ruth, Diane and Ted Mullins drove to Zavalla to watch Josh’s baseball team play. When they left, Wells was losing 7- 0; they learned later that Wells won 9 to 7! And another day, Ruth and good friends, Judy Griggs and Peggy Burt, traveled to Tyler to shop and dine at the Potpourri House. *** Happy belated birthday to Maria (Olvera) Belschner on her 40th birthday. Her husband Todd and family celebrated the big event which was shared with her younger brother Carlos who was 39 on the same day. Jerry Chandler came in to get zipper-cream pea seeds for his son Eric who was planting a big garden. Tracy Branton drove from Hudson just to buy Anasazi beans. She loves them; her neighbor, Lee Sanders, gave her some beans for Christmas. *** Tom Squyres stopped by to remind everyone that the Beulah Congregational Methodist Church will have its homecoming service at 10 a.m. Sunday, April 14. Special speaker will be Trent Squyres, a descendant of Allen Squyres who founded the church in 1892. Chet Strain who grew up in Beulah will also speak. Chet founded the Jubilee Christian Center in Nacogdoches and served as pastor for 15 years. With Judge Esther Barger crumbs 1/4 cup butter, melted Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a shallow baking pan with aluminum foil.

Place salmon fillets skin side down and spread a thin layer of mustard on the top of each

fillet. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Mix melted butter with bread crumbs and pat a thin layer on each fillet.

Bake 15 minutes until salmon flakes easily with a fork.

Brent family moves to Lufkin for life of golf, fitness Wanda Leary’s daughter, Tammy Morgan Ainsworth and her husband, Loden Ainsworth, with Wanda’s grandsons Griffin and Cullen were here from Sunday, March 24, until Saturday, March 30, on their spring break. They live in Montgomery, Ill., which is a town just west of Chicago.

Griffin is 8 and is an avid golfer. He won two tournaments last summer in his area and will be on a golf team this summer. His father Loden and he played Crown Colony Golf course on Wednesday. Then they went to the zoo on Friday. They went to tour the Battleship Texas on Thursday. Cullen is 12 and is a catcher on an elite baseball team in his area. They also visited with their other grandmother in Crockett, Wardette Collins Harrison. They enjoyed the warmer weather even though the first of the week was cold. On the way to Lufkin they stopped in Oxford, Miss., and saw a baseball game between Texas A&M and Ole Miss. Their father graduated from Ole Miss. On Friday night, they went to watch SFA and Sam Houston play a baseball game. Tammy graduated from SFA. *** The Brent family and friends extend a hearty welcome to Thayleigh and Daniel (Scooter) Brent, their triplets Julian, Olivia and Lucas, who will be 3in July, to their new home in Lufkin. They are looking forward to a very active life here where Scooter is a golf pro and Thayleigh has her fitness programs. ***

They are: returning managers, who will be seniors, Will Chance, Jacob Ellis, Jake Martinez, Preston Polk and Matt Smithhart; and new cheer managers are, Sam Phillips, De’Adrian Edwards, Ryan Finnell, Parker Ford, Jeffrey Martin, Bradley Slusher and Paul Spore. *** David Fenley, son of Elton and Theta Fenley of Lufkin, will be touring with Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley in the month of April. David and his wife, Eden, recently moved to Nashville from Fredericksburg. David is a singer/songwriter and has been performing professionally for 10 years. Miranda Lambert happened to come into the venue where David and his singing partner, Josh Hoge, were performing and liked what she heard. Her agent contacted David and Josh and booked them for six shows. Elton and Theta will be traveling to Tulsa, Okla., to catch one of the performances. *** Valena Spradley and Friends of Emily Watts have put together “Team Emily” to raise funds for Relay for Life. They have bracelets, raffle tickets and a Bar-B-Q sand-

She told me about the date. *** Kaylee Sullivan was excited about their grand opening of The Pink Leopard Boutique in downtown Lufkin. It is a sister store to the Garden Gate. Kaylee said that they will have more clothes and less home décor and not only Junior clothes but jewelry as well. They are getting a shipment of things every day. She is selling clothes on Facebook to people out of town.

You can “Like” them on face book to see clothes. Her hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. I told her that her grandmother Jeanette Davis had called me about the open house.

Easter a wonderful day, full of blessings Easter was a wonderful day with so many blessings heaped upon us. I have heard of several churches that had the house filled with members and visitors. Quite a few folks had out of town visitors and they all came to church services. Our music director, Joey Cranford, and the Voices of Praise, presented GOD’S HOLY LAMB, which was a musical for Easter. Several of the youth had speaking parts while the choir sang and the presentation was fantastic.

The next blessing was when we started out of church to find rain and more rain coming down. I was the driver and it was tough driving home but I did not gripe one bit. We were just thankful that the weekend brought us about two inches of the wet stuff. *** Some of the majors and teachers for the women’s health and physical education department at SFASU who graduated or retired got together for some fun looking back. Each time I see her, her wonderful parents come to mind. She was an only child but was not spoiled and had such a great personality. George Henry Clark was laid to rest just past his 78th birthday. Born in Huntington to the late Otis and Macy Arnold Clark.

He worked 21 years at Southland Paper Mill, owned Clark’s Liquor Store, served in the U.S. Army and was a Baptist by faith. Survivors include, Gary and Polly Clark, Zavalla; Connie Clark, Huntington; Richard and Rejena Clark, Nacogdoches; Phil Clark and Amanda Scarborough, Lufkin.

Surviving siblings are, Paul Clark, Billy and Linda Clark, Polly and Pete White, Mildred Denman,

Technology privacy bills discussed April Fools’ day is usually a time for practical jokes and kidding around, but there were very few laughs at the Capitol this week as the House considered the serious subject of the state budget. However, it is not the only story going on.

Five important things that happened this week at your Texas Capitol are:

Airport towers

On Thursday, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) held a special meeting in which they addressed the impending closure of 14 Texas air traffic control towers due to federal sequestration. As you may be aware, the federal government has been unable to agree on a budget, and there have been widespread spending cuts, referred to as sequestration, as a result. If nothing is done, 149 airport towers across the nation, including 14 in Texas, will close on April 7 and thus create a public safety emergency for fliers.

Fortunately, TxDOT voted to step in and pay for the cost of operating Texas’ towers for 90 days at which point they will reevaluate the situation. I am thankful the state has stepped up to protect our citizens when the federal government will not.

Cell phone tracking/ Drone surveillance

Several legislators have filed bills this session regarding Texans’ technology privacy rights.

State Representative Brian Hughes’ much-talkedabout HB 1608 would require law enforcement officers to obtain search warrants in order to access cell phone records. There would be exceptions when a phone is reported stolen or in the case of life threatening situations.

Another technology privacy bill deals with drones. Representative Lance Gooden’s HB 912 would ban the possession and use of any photos obtained by drones or any unmanned vehicles. Both civil and criminal penalties would apply for violators.

We now live in an age when technology is evolving at a faster rate than the laws regarding it. I applaud these members’ efforts to strengthen privacy rights.

Water rate bill

This week the Senate passed SB 567, a bill I authored with Senator Kirk Watson to overhaul the state’s oversight of investor-owned water and sewer utilities (IOUs), and to ensure that customers have an advocate in cases over excessive rates.

The legislation reflects the work of Senate subcommittees led by myself and Senator Watson in 2012.

These subcommittees held hearings on steep increases in water and sewer rates that were imposed by IOUs. The many stakeholders working with the subcommittees have helped us to determine that the current regulatory system is broken. The one-size-fitsall treatment of large-, midand small-sized utilities does not work.

SB 567 is a bill which will bring needed reform on ratemaking to Texans living in rural and unincorporated areas of the state. I will make sure to keep you updated as it is considered in the House soon.

Payday loans

A bill introducing new regulations for the practice of payday loans advanced this week. Senator John Carona’s SB 1247 aims to help end the cycle of debt many disadvantaged individuals face when they take out these short-term loans at incredibly high interest rates. The bill would limit the types of loans that payday lenders can offer, and would restrict the number of times a loan could be rolled over. The Senate Business and Commerce Committee passed SB 1247 Tuesday night by a 6-1 vote, sending it to the Senate floor soon.

The ‘First Tuesday’ of each month is always a day I enjoy. On these days doctors and medical students from around the state converge on the Capitol to lobby on behalf of their profession and their patients. Referred to as the “White Coat Invasion,” this practice has been going on since 2003 and is a chance for legislators to discuss bills regarding the practice of medicine with those who know it best.

This Tuesday I was pleased to be visited by many doctors from Senate District 3 who were in town for the event. These individuals provide an invaluable service to our state and I look forward to working with them for many years to come.

The manager of another establishment rushed over to share his pictures of his prized dogs when he learned I also had a “baby.”

During my shopping trip, I was also offered the latest news on the soon to come opening of the farmer’s market and the arrival of home grown vegetables. I have been given advice on how to cook the best corn bread dressing, where to find the best pie, where to get my tires rotated, and who is the best dentist or doctor in town.

The people are a wealth of knowledge in East Texas.

The most amazing thing is that after being away from this area for a number of years, many of them still know who I am. (It is a good thing that none of us has changed a bit.) My only perplexity is what to do on the week-ends.

There’s lots to love about East Texas I was thinking about the words on the Statue of Liberty the other day that say, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free. The wretched refuse of your teaming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest- tossed to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” I find those words so comforting and friendly.

East Texas reminds me of a good example for a place that welcomes most everyone just as the Lady holding the torch does. Part of her was once a lighthouse that showed ships the way into a safe landing of the harbor. We are fortunate to live in an area that provides for the needs of many. We have food pantries for the hungry, shelters for the homeless, and hospitals for the sick and infirmed.

We are also fortunate to have outstanding schools for every level of education and skill. I discovered the new facility in Diboll on a

drive around town the other day. It is truly beautiful. I remembered how friendly the teachers and administrators of the school system have always been to parents and how patient they are with the students they serve. They are truly a light of shining knowledge.

The best thing I love about East Texas is the countless friendly faces that light up the lives of everyone around them. They can be seen in the restaurants and shops that dot the landscape. Each one of them going about their jobs in a real “down home” style. I never meet a stranger in that they are all ready and eager to share something about themselves as time permits.

ball games to go to, trains to ride, lakes to visit, golf courses to play, theatre productions, museums and stores to shop in. Oh well, most of you already know that. I feel like a new kid on the block being back and enjoying the growth and changes that I see. Most of all, I am just happy to be back in the tall pines and to see so many friendly people.

We have concerns for children of today Have you ever felt sorry for yourself? Then, may I ask have you ever felt blessed? Do you ever feel rich, rich beyond measure? I am not talking money in the bank. I am talking about real wealth. The kind that you cannot measure in a bank account. That is real wealth.

Mike and I are blessed. We are blessed with a Daddy God that loves us unconditionally. We are blessed with family that loves us. We are blessed with friends and a church that loves us. We are blessed with folks that pray for us.

Now, that is what I call real wealth.

Mike had back surgery last Friday, and we had tons of friends and family praying for us and checking on us. We had so much prayer.

That night, when we were in

Jan Allbritton the hospital, I slept on that pullout chair that is so famous for discomfort. Normally, I fret and worry about Mike. Do you know what? When I put my head down on that pillow, the presence of God fell all over me, and I slept like a rock! Sure, I heard the nurses coming in and going out, but I slept. God assured me that He was taking of Mike, and therefore, I slept.

Since Mike was just two days out of surgery on his back, we had to miss church Sunday. In fact, our pastor’s wife said that if we came, she would send us back home.

LOL She knows that we don’t like to miss! We watched church TV. In fact, we watched Robert Morris of Gateway Church because Mike loves to watch him. It was really good, but not as good as being there.

Here is what I am saying. TV church is good, but not as good as being in the service. I know that God is capable of reaching through that TV, but I think it is even better in person.

A lot of the young parents today grew up in church and got saved. Then as an adult decided that they didn’t want to go to church. They are saved because they made a decision for Jesus as a child, but what about their kids?

My concern is the kids of the young adults. If they don’t take their kids to church and they don’t tell their kids about Jesus,...how

are the kids to know Him? Do the grandparents that took their own kids to church have to teach their grandkids about Jesus? Somebody has to!!

You see,... playing on ball teams and being on specialty teams is okay, having every electronic device on the market is okay, having enough clothes to cloth a small tribe in Africa is okay, eating out every day is okay, but there are things that are more important.

Eternal things! Things that make an eternal difference are the only ones to really worry about.

No amount of sports, no amounts of electronics, no amount of clothes, no amount of money will get someone into the kingdom of God. We need to stop chasing the material things and concentrate on the ones that affect where one

spends eternity.

We need to teach our kids to not be selfish, but think of others.

We need to maybe pick up a book like “7” by Jen Hatmaker. that is about a mutiny against excess.

We need to stop and take time to think about what is really important.

There is a way to teach our kids about God and the Bible.

There are many really good churches in this area where you and your kids can get connected with others who love and care about Jesus.

The church that I dearly love spent tons of money for the kids section because we believe our kids are that important. Are your kids that important to you?

It’s usually him taking the beatings from his rough and tough sisters, but he’s started a little more of the brotherly fights. I’ve told him that he’d better watch what he does or there will be no more wrestling. He’s been really careful about laying hands on his sisters.

Lately, I have found myself surrounded by negativity- at home, at work, on Face book, and even at the grocery store.

With every intention of staying away from it, I got sucked in. I was probably a ring leader of it

myself at times. It’s hard staying positive when you’re upset about something, but even harder when others are upset as well.

The disagreements with your spouse, children, or coworkers can lead to negative thoughts. Everyone has probably experienced it when you go to a store with long lines and only one checker. Hello negative thoughts... or ugly words spoken aloud by some people. I came across a bashing of someone on face book and more ugly

comments followed. I read an article online, and as I scanned the comments, I began to become upset with what I was reading.

Surrounding yourselves with people and things that can bring out the good in us is what we need to do. And if we find ourselves in this predicament, PRAY. Pray for guidance, and pray for peace. Don’t read that article or the comments. Pray for your bashing friend. Pray for the poor check out girl who

Elementary raises funds for AHA Just recently the student at HG Temple Elementary raised over $1500 for the American Heart Association, which is enough to

help save 19 peoples lives.

Each day the students were actively engaged in jumping activities and learning heart facts. The

class who raised the most money for the campus was kindergarten class Mrs. Kala Stewart with $313.

This class won a pizza party. Mrs. Kaleena Mayo class was second and got the honors of wrapping Coach Pam Bass in toilet paper. The top students in each grade got the honors of throwing a pie in either Assistant Principal Zach Crawford or Student teacher Coach Ryan Rasbeary face. The representatives for Kindergarten were twin brothers Ja’Derrian and Jerren James from Mrs. Kala Stewart’s class raising over $300.

Baker Pest Control owners Joe and Sue Baker are members of the Diboll Business Association.

The DBA now has 30-plus business members and is formulating plans on how Diboll businesses can better get their word out to Diboll shoppers.

The next “Pack the House” event will be about 5 p.m.

The Diboll Lumberjacks dropped Jasper 7-2 behind Lowe’s early single on Friday, April 5.

Alex Grimaldo was solid at the plate, going 3-for-4, driving in one run and scoring two. He singled in the first, third and fifth innings.

Eric Dejesus was a workhorse on the hill while bagging the win for Diboll. Dejesus allowed no earned runs, four hits and three walks while striking out four over six innings of work.

The win pushed Diboll’s record to 5-2 and dropped Jasper’s record to 1-6 in district play.

run support, allowing Central to steal a 2-1 win Tuesday.

Central couldn’t get anything going as long as Sergio Castillo was pitching. Castillo held Pollok Central hitless over 1 2/3 innings, allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out two.

Chase Taylor got it done on the bump on the way to a win. He allowed one run over seven innings. Taylor struck out five, walked one and gave up two hits.

Central scored two runs on a two-run homerun by Joseph Lansford.

In the second inning, Diboll pushed across its only run of the day on a groundout by Christian Palacio.
