SACRED HEART 2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT

BUILDING COMMUNITY

AT THE HEART OF COMMUNITY Strong communities are built when the head and the heart work together—when everyone shares a sense of belonging and embraces the spirit of giving and service. In 2013-2014, we honored and celebrated Goal IV as a school, neighbor, partner in service and faithful friend. And our community grew stronger.

The Goals of a Sacred Heart Education I. A personal and active faith in God II. A deep respect for intellectual values III. A social awareness which impels to action

IV. The building of community as a Christian value V. Personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom

It was a year of community building at Sacred Heart, as we came together to reflect and act upon the defining criteria of Goal IV. I saw our community’s strength in the eyes of a Kindergarten Buddy, in the caring reach of a hand at Misericordia and in the hopeful resolve of Justice Day. Every day, our students, families, faculty and staff modeled the communitybuilding aspirations of our founder, St. Madeleine Sophie Barat. Through engaged learning, committed service and responsible stewardship, Sacred Heart continues to thrive. Our new Strategic Plan is certainly testament to the strength of our community, as is the record support we received for the Annual Fund in 2013-2014. The engagement and generosity of our families and friends fuels the spirit of the Sacred Heart community. Through “Why We Give,” the theme of this Annual Report, we celebrate the countless ways our school has benefited from those who hold it so dear. I am grateful to Board Chair Jeff Jozwiak for his kind and steadfast leadership, and to all of our Trustees for their guidance and dedication to Sacred Heart. To everyone who continues to support our mission, thank you!

FAITH FROM THE HEART Being part of a Sacred Heart community is important to Letty and Tony Marsico. Their daughters, Brooke A’20 and Elle A’21, are the latest generation of family members to proudly carry on the Sacred Heart tradition. Letty’s mother, Ana Rodriguez, attended the Sacred Heart school in Cuba. Tony’s uncle, Mike Crane, graduated from Hardey in 1950 and his aunt, Susan Crane Crawley, is a member of the Academy class of 1955. Cousins Gael and Caroline Crane are also Sacred Heart alumni. “Life is about family and faith, and at Sacred Heart we have both,” says Letty. This past spring, Brooke made her First Communion alongside 56 other Sacred Heart students. The Rodriguez and Marsico families were well represented. “I felt very close to the other parents,” recalls Tony. “There was this wonderful feeling we were all in it together.” Supporting Sacred Heart is a family affair for the Marsicos. They are sponsors of L’Esprit and leadership donors to the Annual Fund. Extended family members on both sides are also generous school supporters. Among her numerous volunteer commitments at Sacred Heart, Letty will be co-chairing L’Esprit 2015 with Eileen Murphy and Colleen Farrell. “I was auction captain for the His/Her category and look where I ended up,” laughs Letty. “We are all true believers in Sacred Heart,” says Tony.

“ The parent involvement at Sacred Heart is so inspiring. You play your part as a way of paying tribute to everyone else who is giving their time and support.” Letty Marsico Current Parent

LEGACY OF THE HEART Former classmates Joey Yao H’86 and Peter Wall H’85 are successful lawyers, involved Hardey Prep alumni and active Sacred Heart volunteers. They share something else in common. They both received the Hardey Award, the top award given each year to the graduating 8th grader who best exemplifies the goals of a Sacred Heart education. And both say their time on Sheridan Road shaped their lives in lasting ways. “My father was a CTA bus driver who drove past Sacred Heart every day,” recalls Joey, whose parents emigrated from the Philippines. “They wanted the best for my sister and me.” Joey’s sister, Irene, graduated from the Academy in 1987.

“ I support this school because I want to help make sure a Sacred Heart education is accessible to even more kids from different backgrounds.”

Peter says Sacred Heart has always been a part of his life. His mother is a graduate and his two brothers also attended Hardey Prep. “It was instilled in us that Sacred Heart would be a place to call home all our lives,” says Peter. He and Joey claim Hardey classmates among their closest friends today. “I cherish this community,” says Joey, whose niece, Zoe, the daughter of Irene, recently completed kindergarten at Sacred Heart. “Because of our legacy connection to this school, my family feels even more a part of the American fabric.” The Wall legacy continues as well. Peter and his wife, Emily, have a daughter, Elizabeth, who will begin kindergarten next year. “Sacred Heart is a part of our family,” Peter says.

“ Any success I’ve had in my life, I can trace to my Hardey experience. I give back to Sacred Heart by volunteering my time and providing my financial support.”

A JOURNEY OF THE HEART Dr. Kais Kharoofa and his wife, Dr. Aseel Mahdi, fled Iraq in 2008, arriving in the U.S. as refugees through the United Nations. They came for the safety of their children and the opportunity to build new lives. They settled in Chicago and came to Sacred Heart on the recommendation of Tom Robb at Care for Real—the human service organization that received the 2013 Goal Award for its work in the Edgewater community. “Sacred Heart embraced us and gave us a hand when we needed it the most,” says Aseel. Mona A’12 thrived at Sacred Heart and now attends St. Ignatius College Prep. Baha recently completed Hardey 5 and loves basketball just about as much as math and science. Kais and Aseel are now studying hard to obtain their U.S. medical licenses, while also working. He is a medical interpreter and she is a nurse technician for the Felician Sisters. “It’s like starting all over again,” says Kais, who was a general surgeon in Iraq. Aseel was a gynecologist.

“ Gifts at all levels make a difference. When we all give something, Sacred Heart becomes stronger.” Dr. Kais Kharoofa Current Parent

After receiving their licenses, they must then secure medical residencies—a significant challenge—but they remain hopeful and determined. “Our dream is to be physicians again,” says Aseel quietly. Dr. Kharoofa and Dr. Mahdi have given to the Annual Fund every year since enrolling Mona. “The school has given us so much, this is the least we can do,” says Kais.

PARENTS OF ALUMNI

PALS* OF THE HEART During their time as parents at Sacred Heart, Kevin and Janice Lee were the kind of volunteers that every school hopes for—cheery, energetic and hands-on. Janice assisted with Admissions Coffees, community service, classroom activities and special events. Kevin, among his school-related gigs, started the Dads’ Book Club. What’s the best way to sum up the Dads’ Book Club? No reading required. “We just thought the name made us sound more respectable,” laughs Kevin. Six years ago he was at the bus stop with a couple of other Sacred Heart dads and suggested they get together for a few beers. The rest, as they say, is history. Today the Dads’ Group regularly brings together 30 to 50 dads for camaraderie and community service.

Recently the group hosted its annual service day at Josephinum Academy and took in a Cubs game at Wrigley Field. (Cubs 2, Mets 1) Although daughters Teresa and Christine have both graduated from Sacred Heart, Kevin continues to “chair” the Dads’ Group because of the close friendships he has made. Teresa is now a freshman at Creighton University and Christine a junior at St. Ignatius College Prep. Kevin and Janice continue to support the Annual Fund every year, and so do Christine and Teresa. They also serve as Parents of Alumni representatives. “This community draws you in and you never want to let go,” says Janice. *Parents of Alumni “ The world is a better place because of Sacred Heart. FACULTY

“ I give to the Annual Fund because my gift goes to something that helps everyone. We’re all here to grow together and by supporting the school we are helping Sacred Heart grow, too.” Jill Renn H ardey 2nd grade teacher

TEACHING FROM THE HEART Jill Renn has been teaching 2nd grade at Hardey Prep for 15 years. She also directs Sacred Heart’s summer camp and choreographs the annual Middle School musical. You say that teaching boys is awesome. How so? First of all, their energy—they can keep up with me! Plus, there is a sensitive and sweet side to boys that is so wonderful. What I love about 2nd graders is that they are just independent enough to take off on their own. And I get to be a part of it. It’s well understood that girls and boys learn differently. How do you address the learning needs of the boys in your classroom? Boys learn best by moving. I’m a big one for getting the wiggles out! My boys can work at standing tables instead of at desks. They can sit on exercise balls rather than on chairs. Boys’ minds will go quickly to a resting place if they aren’t engaged. Just think of the husbands and other men in our lives. (laughs) How do you teach building community to your Hardey gentlemen? Community is about taking the best of what you learn from others to become a better person yourself. This is why it’s so important to model good behavior and character in the classroom. Service is such a big part of building community at Sacred Heart. It certainly is. It’s important to remind children that their community is bigger and more inclusive than they may think—including the homeless man at Starbucks. Through service, we make a human connection. It’s not just about donating a can of soup. It’s about sitting down with someone and having the soup together.

Reach out to your teachers for help – they’re awesome.

YOUNG ALUMNAE

Be yourself.

Remember that Sacred Heart is your forever home.

Community service is really important. Make sure it’s always a part of your life.

Say your prayers.

Learn to love the uniform. Not having to pick out clothes in the morning is one less thing to worry about.

ADVICE FROM THE HEART A beloved community-building tradition at Sacred Heart is the Kindergarten Buddy Program, through which 7th graders are matched with kindergarteners to provide guidance and friendship. When asked what advice they would give their buddies today, graduates Cameron, Noelle and Samantha were eager to share. And their buddies, who just completed 2nd grade, were all ears.

Recent 2013 graduates (top to bottom) Samantha, Cameron and Noelle are Sacred Heart’s newest donors to the Annual Fund—setting a fine example for all alumni. “We are children of the heart forever,” says Samantha. Samantha Beck attends Latin School. Her buddy is Louise Goldman A’20.

Cameron Herman attends Whitney Young. Her buddy is Alana Shannon A’20.

Get solid with the Sacred Heart Goals now. They will guide you for life.

Put your heart in everything you do.

Noelle Wojciechowski attends St. Ignatius College Prep. Her buddy is Gabi Walker A’20.

Treasure your time here. Treasure your friends.

Learn how to use commas correctly. (Shout out to Mrs. Haverkamp!)

Justice Day Celebrates Neighbors

Foiling Pirates and Hungry Crocodiles

In 2014, Justice Day focused on “The Parable of the Good Samaritan” through which students considered the essential question, “Who is my neighbor?” To this end, they visited the public library, Howard Area Community Center, Misericordia and police and fire stations—among other destinations. They also met with local residents and elected officials. With advice from noted journalists on interviewing techniques, they documented stories of peace and justice across their community.

Peter Pan and Tinkerbell soared to new heights in the Middle School production of Peter Pan in April. The musical follows the classic J.M. Barrie story of the boy who won’t grow up and his adventures in Neverland with the Lost Boys, Tiger Lily and Captain Hook. The fabulous production involved more than 70 students onstage and behind the scenes. Thanks to Director Jane Steinfels ASH’92, Musical Director Justin Nixon and Choreographer Jill Renn for bringing the magical tale to life.

Neighbors North Join the Network

Chatting It Up

Laughter, Nods of Agreement

On October 21, the entire Sheridan Road community took part in a live telecast with other Sacred Heart schools to honor the Centennial of Janet Erskine Stuart, RSCJ, a leading thinker in Sacred Heart education. In her honor, each Sacred Heart school created artwork for the Stuart Center in Washington D.C., an educational and justice project of the Society of the Sacred Heart.

Two Sacred Heart Schools in Canada—one in Halifax, Nova Scotia and the other in Montreal, Quebec—have joined the Network of Sacred Heart Schools. “They will begin formally sharing our life in the Goals and Criteria,” said Nat Wilburn, Head of Schools. The Network of Sacred Heart Schools now includes 24 schools across the U.S. and Canada, with sister schools in 40 countries around the world.

In conjunction with the rollout of Sacred Heart’s new Strategic Plan, Head of Schools Nat Wilburn engaged members of the school community in informal conversations around the Plan’s vision. “Chats with Nat,” 11 in total, provided an opportunity for participants to voice their thoughts on top priorities and to help shape final action plans.

One hundred and fifty members of the Sacred Heart community gathered on April 2 to hear the insights of Dr. Wendy Mogel, parenting expert and author of the well-known book, Blessings of a Skinned Knee. Her discussion focused on how moms and dads can raise self-reliant, appreciative children in today’s world of entitlement. Dr. Mogel’s visit was sponsored by Sacred Heart’s Parent Education Program.

Music to Our Ears

The Next Mark Zuckerberg?

The Sacred Heart Band returned for its second year, welcoming new and returning students under the baton of Tim Mikolay, Primary School music teacher and band director. A highlight of the year for the band was performing alongside the U.S. Navy Band from the Great Lakes Training Center during a school visit in May. In 2013-2014, Sacred Heart’s new Glee Club debuted, performing for the first time during the Justice Day Closing Assembly under the direction of Justin Nixon, Middle School music teacher.

Middle School students were introduced to the basics of computer programming in their technology classes during the nationwide “Hour of Code” initiative. Sacred Heart students were among 17 million students in 170 countries who wrote more than 500 million lines of code as part of the initiative, held in conjunction with Computer Science Awareness Week.

Poems and Songs for Community

Celebrating Diversity

Students shared their voices through original poetry and song lyrics as part of National Poetry Month in April. Jumpstarting the creative process were visits from Chicago author Kevin Coval and spoken word poets and rappers, the Q Brothers. For every student poem or song created—515 in total—an anonymous donor gave $1 in Sacred Heart’s name to Literature for All of Us, a literacy organization that works with young people in underserved Chicago neighborhoods.

For the third year, 4th grade students from Sacred Heart, the Muslim Community Center and Solomon Schechter Day School came together as part of the Poetry Pals program that promotes diversity through poetry, dialogue, art and song. Poetry Pals, which fosters understanding and peace in a multicultural, multi-faith society, culminated in an Interfaith Community Evening at Sacred Heart with more than 200 guests in attendance.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR

Heartwarming Recognition The Howard Area Community Center was recognized in March with the Goal Award at L’Esprit de Sacré Coeur, Sacred Heart’s annual gala. The social service agency was honored for exemplifying Goal IV—the building of community as a Christian value—through the provision of vital services for disadvantaged families. Sacred Heart is proud to have a 30-year relationship with the agency. Students volunteer weekly as teachers’ aides and our holiday giving program provides gifts to more than 1,300 children served by the Center each year.

A Winning Roster A total of 327 students competed in basketball, soccer, cross country, volleyball, track and baseball in 2013-2014. The boys’ and girls’ cross country teams made the state finals for the second year in a row, with all participating runners posting their best personal times! The 7th grade Academy and 8th grade Hardey volleyball teams won their league championships, and the basketball season ended with a strong showing at end-of-season tournaments. Congratulations to all our athletes and coaches for making us proud!

Nearly 500 guests attended the annual benefit on March 1 at The Hilton Chicago, which raised nearly $400,000 for Sacred Heart. From extraordinary getaways and fabulous dinners, to concerts and sports tickets, there were more than 650 items featured in the evening’s silent and live auctions and in the four-day online auction that preceded the event. Co-Chairs Amy Andrews, Wendy Beard, Jane Goodrich and Beth Kost put on a sparkling evening of dinner, dancing and fun for all. Volunteers spent many hours to ensure the auction’s success under the inspiring leadership of Auction Solicitation Captains Kory Kozlowski, Sarah Lien and Maura Starshak. Our heartfelt thanks to all!
