Executive Order 14008 established the Justice40 initiative and directed the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) to develop a whole-of-government approach to environmental justice. CEQ created a Climate and Economic Justice ScreeningTool that will be used to identify communities eligible for benefits from federal investments in critical sectors.

Why is this work important?

Anticipated Impacts:

1. Increase community engagement as opposed to individual.

2. Higher resolution recognition of groups and paying homage to their contributions.

3. Iterations of EJMap will have redefined criteria for a subset of indicators.

4. Potential for future research on how these impacts (from CES) can be a proxy for cumulative impacts.

Outcomes and Achievements

1. Academic paper.

2. Meetings with federal officials and EJ champions about inclusion of cultural ecosystem services models within EJ screening tool frameworks.

3. Presentations including this work at two international conferences: the UNFCCC Conference of Parties 27 in Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt and the United Nations First Permanent Forum for People ofAfrican Descent in Geneva, Switzerland.
